We came looking for some late night grub, and we were hoping this would be our "go to" spot. It was okay, but I think we'll keep looking: Carne asada tacos: Carne asada was okay, but it tasted like cheap quality meat to me; reminded me of burger patty meat so it wasn't my favorite. Al pastor taco: To be honest, they were so similar that we couldn't tell which was asada and which was al pastor lol. We finally figured it out, but texture and everything was too close to asada to wow us. Carnitas taco: This was a bit dry for me, but my partner liked it. Lengua: This was bomb. Fan favorite between the two of us. Meat was succulent, juicy, and savory. Too bad we only ordered one (we had to fight each other for it!) Bean and cheese burrito: My partner loves his bean and cheese burritos, but only with refried beans. He also asked for them to put some onion/cilantro into the burrito, but they forgot. This came with whole cooked beans and waaaaay too much cheese--it was a little too much and texture was not very appetizing. I think there was rice, but honestly I can't remember with all that cheese... Service was mas o menos as well...the guy who put all our stuff in the bag had oily hands and it got all over the bag handles and the bottom of the bag as well. It is the kind of spice level where you use all the napkins to wipe the sweat from your brow. Because of this level of spice, I have to give it 4 stars instead of 5 stars. We have been coming here since 2000 when we lived in Pasadena. If you want authentic street taco style tacos - come here. They have burritos and asada fries as well - but we keep it old school and stick to Al Pastor tacos and if you're adventurous try the Cabeza and Buche. Tacos are small - so you should order at least 4. Unless you order the fish taco - that's the size of two street tacos. Best to pay with cash and avoid the service charge for cards. Small amount of tables out front or take it to go. Each time we pass through Pasadena - we make it a point to come to La Estrella. Don't let it's humble appearance deter you. Food is sooooo good. I have never found a better place in my entire 54 years of living in So-Cal. If you want restaurant service, some kind of dining experience, you are not really in the right place, that's not what they are. They provide tables if you want to eat there. But the place is an ENDLESS LINE of contractors and construction workers getting food for lunch. I have never found a place with good prices that makes such solid, old school, legit street tacos. My boyfriend and I were driving around Pasadena looking for a cheap place to grab a quick lunch from and we stumbled across this place. It was a Saturday afternoon and the line wasn't that long and service was pretty quick. I ordered the Fish Burrito ($5.99). It was pretty good because they packed it with a lot of fish and rice. I usually don't like rice in my burritos, but they seasoned it pretty well with some salsa in the burrito that I didn't mind it at all, and it made it a lot more filling. It's also big enough that I could almost finish the whole thing, but not quite. Their tacos are also pretty good. They're definitely small though, like street taco size, but they put a lot of seasoning on them. You could probably get full from 4-5 of those tacos. Personally I would recommend the Tacos Al Pastor or the Asada Tacos (both $1.29 each). The food comes out pretty quickly, and there's a few tables out front, but it's very limited. I came I think after the lunch rush was dying down, but I would think that a lot of the people that come here usually take their orders to go. There's limited parking in the back, but we found curb parking a couple blocks over. What bums me out about this place though is that it's extra for extra limes and salsa. While both are complimentary with your order, if you knew me then you'd know that I love my limes, and a lot of them. At this place I'm going to have to limit myself to the amount of limes that they give me, which is probably about two slices of limes. If you're someone who loves drenching your food in salsa, then just know that they're going to charge you extra for more than one small container of salsa. read more

This restaurant is unassuming but one of my favorites. I haven't tried a wide variety of orders, but my go-to is a vegetarian burrito with fries (a vegetarian California burrito). I think it's a good mix of flavors and not too heavy on any one ingredient. I've also had fish tacos here which I thought were quite good too. I've never left feeling unsatisfied. While there is parking and enough parking spaces, the parking lot is narrow so maneuvering can be difficult. Today it reminded how much I've missed it and how good the food is here. Its a small place north of Fair Oaks Ave. about 1/2 mile pass Old Town Pasadena. Outdoor patio seating only and small parking lot in the back. I prefer their tacos over King Tacos because they give you more portions, cheaper and give you wedge of lime for extra zest and flavor which is how I prefer to eat them. My favorites are the carne asada, lengua (tongue), al pastor (BBQ pork) and cabeza (head). I always get mine with everything which includes onions, cilantro and their hot red sauce. All delicious, fresh and tasty. For $1.29 each, they give you a generous amount of meat on a small corn tortilla. I ordered 6 tacos and soda for around $10 which is a great deal. They only take cash thou so make sure to stop by the ATM first before coming here. Their fish tacos, burritos and nachos are also excellent which I'll try on my next visit. This is my first or second favorite taco place in all of Pasadena. The pollo tacos are top tier and so tender and juicy. The carne asada fries are also pretty delicious and for what you pay for, you really get loaded up. My favorite part is without a doubt the red salsa. They started charging if you want extra sauce but it's worth it for a few extra cents. The red salsa is so good and if you have extra, you can put it on scrambled eggs the next morning like I do! I went to Rose Bowl for a bike ride with friends and my husband recommended getting fish taco. We could have rode our bikes but instead we drove and did a take-out and brought it back to the park. We ordered both fish taco and shrimp taco and it was delicious!!!
