I also ordered a Zelda cocktail which was a good combination of sweet and sour. Had to be One of the Best meals we all had in 2025; we will definitely be back. A very charming French restaurant in Rehoboth Beach,De. We started with cocktails and then switched to wine. Our server was very delightful and we never felt rushed. We had a couple of Manhattans, Mom had a red wine and Wifey had her usual vodka and ginger ale. The baguette was delightful and it was just enough. I started with the beef tartare which was seasoned very well and was very tasty. Others had the mussels on special, and an onion soup. Entrees were also very good a trout with almonds and French beans, a pork chop ( I'll try that next time), a beef bourguignon and I had the duck cassoulet. It brought me back to the days when I was making this dish with my owner and mentor JJ Rachou at La Cote Basque. It was a perfect night for it; it delivered and I was so satisfied. The wine that was chosen was very good a French blend, it was so good we had two LOL. The dessert I chose was very nice as well a chambord cake with raspberry ( I did wish it had a touch of chocolate on it, I even asked lol, but no luck). I have been lucky enough to revisit La Fable numerous times and every single time it is truly outstanding! The staff are all so friendly and welcoming and make it feel like a special occasion every time we go in. We've always been so impressed with the food, too. The steak frites are maybe the best I've ever had, and the seasonal specials are always incredible. The menu stays relatively similar, but that's never a problem if you are doing everything as well as La Fable is. Even if you're not going in for dinner, I recommend stopping by the bar for a drink- the bartender is so friendly and the cocktails are all excellent, the menu changes sporadically but their take on a Kir Royale is great. Pretty disappointing-- the waiter proudly highlighted that there was a French chef. The trout almondine came out with tiny chopped almonds and the ground dust at the bottom of the bin. Rather than actual slices. And dish was way too acidic. Nice crisp on the skin. But if the rest doesn't taste good, crisp is a waste. Friend had coquilles (scallops) St Jaques-- I saw him squeezing lime from his drink on it-- said not enough acid. And we both thought the cauliflower was too acidic. I wanted to order the cassoulet but it was "panko encrusted". Not sure why you'd change such a dish unless you don't know how to properly prepare the duck. The only non disappointing item was the bread and butter. What a shame. I was here once 10 years ago-- now I know why I haven't returned! The first time I was in Rehoboth, I saw La Fable from the outside and immediately tried to book a table, but it was booked up. This trip, I made sure to secure one and we were not disappointed by our visit! This restaurant is so cute, the service was phenomenal, from our server to everyone who delivered and cleared dishes, the vibes were friendly, happy, and bubbly. To start, we ordered the oeufs mimosa, which were delicious. My main dish was the scallops, which were fresh, big, and delicious. My husband had the canard (duck), and it was stellar. When we arrived I was Flores. Thought for sure we weren't at the right place. How could a restaurant with such great ratings look so dirty and unappealing from the outside? I told my husband let's be positive and once we got inside things were much better. But honestly, if I was walking past this establishment and took a look at it..I'd keep walking by. We went to La Fable to celebrate our 1st Anniversary. It was recommended by no less than 90 people on the Rehoboth Foodies Facebook group. The place reminds me of a chic Paris cafe. The service is pleasant and not intrusive. We were given complimentary champagne for a toast. The food was outstanding. My husband had Chicken Cordon Bleu. I had Coquille St Jacque. Oh the Food. Oh the Food. In 6 years of living in Delaware, I just had my best meal. Duck Breast. Flavors were intense. You almost didn't want to swallow but hold the flavors in your mouth. Perfectly cooked My wife had the scallopsnans was equally impressed. Our friend the Cordon Bleu and get it was just fine but had too much lemon in it. Oh, did I mention the French Onion Soup. What a dreamy French food meal we had at the cute little spot right near our beach condo! Came to celebrate our daughter's 25th birthday and were treated like royalty. We started off with some fancy cocktails and a lovely card from the staff, wishing our daughter well. So thoughtful and a nice touch for a special evening! Our family is cheese crazy, so of course we indulged in our first course with a fromage board loaded with cheese, crostini's, spreads and pickles. I love soup, and the chilled sweet pea soup caught my eye. So glad to have tried this as it was so flavorful and creamy. By then were were all getting full, so we ordered two main dishes to share amongst the four of us. The Poulet cordon bleu came as a fried chicken breast stuffed with melty gruyere and prosciutto and topped with a Dijon mustard sauce and a side of mixed vegetables. Could not get enough of this flavor combo! But even better yet was the boeuf bourguignon, an unctuous plate full of braised short ribs, mushrooms, pearl onions and carrots over creamy silky whipped potatoes. I could live in that dish! If that all wasn't enough, the staff and kitchen surprised us at the end with a plate of homemade macarons to celebrate the milestone event. We popped in here for a cocktail before dinner somewhere else because it looked so fun from the outside. The building is very art deco, and while it is below street level, there is a big window in the bar letting you see in (and out). The bar itself leans heavily into the French bistro theme, and the bar has stained glass under the glass that is lit up. The vibe is very fun. There was also a musician behind part of the bar, who was singing lounge music and playing a keyboard, which was a nice addition. I'm taking off points for the fly infestation and the general mess behind the bar, but that could have been an anomaly. read more

A classic French restaurant? It depends on your perspective. La Fable represents the cooking of the Ile de France - there is little representation of the food of the Sud-Ouest, of Alsace -Lorraine, of Provence, or the Bordelaise. We celebrated an anniversary on a fall Monday, the restaurant being about half full. A Negroni was large, well made, and quite potent, something of a bargain at $14.00. La Portena's Boursicottes Sancerre was crisp. Some warm slices of baguette arrived, with good butter at the right temp for service. For a starter, I had the torchon of foie gras, which came with a sort of breadstick, on a plate. The thick disk of foie gras had plenty of flavor and was accompanied by a sort of bloom of fruit conserves and cherries. The bread stick was inadequate, but I availed myself of the leftover bread service. La Portena went with the La Fable salad, a nice mix if slightly overdressed. The entrees are all $42, which may seem a bit pricey. I plumped for the scallops. They weren't the largest but were tasty and fresh. They came in a mushroom sauce, not the usual Coquille St. Jacques presentation. Pretty good, but the nice surprise was the crisp and well seasoned side of fried cauliflower. La Portena's halibut was thick and properly cooked. We shared a piece of the Chambord cake. Luscious if not the most sophisticated dessert I've encountered recently. Overall, a tasty if not exactly innovative meal. I would return. read more

It feels like fine dining in Rehoboth Beach has fallen off a cliff. We started with foie gras and escargot, and a special app of a seafood chowder. These were all great! Then came the mains. We ordered the special, which was a $58 lobster gnocchi done "Parisian style" (no potatoe, flour instead) and chicken poulet bleu. Total trash. The gnocchi had the consistency of glue. The lobster was overcooked. It was overall a muddy dish. The chicken was overcooked and dry like toast. The cheese was undetectable. It also came out room temperature. The Crème Brûlée custard was like soup. The baguette was good! We have been coming here for 10 years but I think this will be the last. So sad. read more

We went here the past week. We had been before and liked it. I got the rockfish. When it arrived it smelled fishy and tasted fishy so I ate very little of it. I did not want to complain because we were there celebrating a birthday and I didn't want to take away from the event. When they cleared my plate they asked if I liked the dish. (Because 90% was not eaten) I said it smelled fishy and didn't taste good. They ended up comping one dessert Here are my thoughts on this... 1) in a fancy restaurant you expect every dish to be expertly created and perfect (this dish looked like a blob of food on the plate. Not attractive) 2) how did a smelly piece of fish make it to my table in the first place.... Early dinner Sat night at 5 and we were alone. Our fault as we should have made reservations earlier in the week. By the time we left the place was packed. We were told it was a limited but fabulous menu and they were right. Started with the Foie Gras - be aware it is one slice for $25 but oh man what flavor. My wifey had the Cheese board, the best was the creamy cow, and she shared a bit with me. I had the Bouillabaisse, with tons of mussels, clams, large shrimp and nice hunks of meaty white Cod in a wine and saffron sauce so flavorful without being overwhelming and completed with two baguettes slathered in butter and garlic, yum. We endured however. The chicken Cordon bleu was epic. Best I've ever tasted. O don't see it on many menus so I had to try it! However the tin ceiling, the tables smashed together in this small space have made it acoustically impossible to have a nice conversation over the wonderful cuisine. The soup of the day, I think a squash veloute, was phenomenal. Everything else was great but not as much of a stand out (I'm super critical). But the service. The service can make you dream of a place. We were seated and asked if there was a special occasion. My mom had retired from teaching so this was a celebration night, they sent out a round of champagne promptly. Our table of four asked for wine recommendations and ordered multiple appetizers and courses and the service rose to the occasion. Everything recommended was great. They perfectly paced out the appetizers so we did not have a crowded table. One of my biggest pet peeves is a table too small for sharing. They also always brought new plates and utensils. Our waitress was the perfect amount of attentive while also allowing us to enjoy our meal. Terribly overpriced at $14. - Escargots. No complaints. - Cheese plate with charcuterie. There was a triple cream brie that was really fantastic, but this was far too small and unimpressive for the $28 price tag. For the entree I had chicken cordon bleu. I seem to remember this being a really, really massive portion in the past, but it had been severely downsized. The taste was fine--maybe a little too salty-- but it was just not worth anywhere close to $42. Maybe $25. Desserts were fine but unremarkable. Overpriced at $14. We probably won't be back. This charming place consistently received high marks and for good reason: the food is excellent. The waiter told us the chef is French so what you see on the menu reflects that.
