This place isn't willing to make any accommodations for handicapped people. We used to always come to this place for lunch when we had to go to the area. As a person in a wheelchair who has trouble getting close to their low tables, they would bring out a tall table for us to sit at. Today that changed. They said they no longer have those tables available. When my girlfriend walked to where the table was, she pointed it out to the servers. They then informed her the manager didn't want it pulled out anymore. I then asked to speak to the manager who will not come out and speak to us. Starting off, I went in for lunch with my daughter and grandchild. The seating tables were uncomfortable & the highchair was EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! We tried getting a different highchair but were told that was the only one. There was no safety strap connector and I had to tie him in. This is a MAJOR no no! The service was slow, as if we were infringing on their conversation time. We ordered stuffed mushrooms( chicken/avocado/cheese) they looked like a dish I would consider as a means of using up leftovers. The taste was a mashup that made no sense and they were cold. They ended up in a take-home box when they should have gone back to the kitchen. We ordered off the lunch menu. My daughter told me about a Mexican shrimp soup that she couldn't find on the menu. I asked questions about the shrimp soup regarding contents, portions etc. to no avail. So I took a chance and ordered a bowl and 2 mini chimichangas w/beans & rice lunches. ..and a chicken tender/frie kids lunch. The soup came faster than the meals. The soup was in a very large glass bowl on a stand. The contents tasted and looked like watered down salsa with fresh cilantro and a bunch of Indonesia shrimp. I shared it with my daughter. Both of us are the shrimp and left the juice. At this point, the dangers toy grandson were too high. I had everything packed up, never tried the lunch special until later. ( It tasted good reheated ) Lastly, I had ordered coffee. I was not informed about the cinnamon they use it their brew. This too was disappointing and dangerous! I am aware that many Mexican restaurants use Cinnamon but most have a regular brew as well. Cinnamon causes allergic reactions, such as swelling of the throat... Choking.... I did not finish it and got my coffee at the gas station. All in all I was very disappointed!! Maybe if I was seated in the room with the fountain I would have at least enjoyed that. This is a FAR CRY from the La Fuentes that I used to enjoy at the 6th street location! My bill was $50.00. I was Shocked! The lunch specials were $7.95 each and that dang nasty bowl of Asian shrimp was $16.00. My guess is that those disgusting cold mushrooms added the balance to my bill. I was very much disappointed and very angry about that baby/child booster! Not sure I'd go back without a damn good explanation and knowing they put the safety of children as a priority above profit. We've been coming here for years since we moved to the Tosa area and sadly it's been slowly going down hill. Last night we came into the restaurant to a 30 minute wait. Despite many open tables throughout the restaurant there were people waiting throughout the space. They have two bars and only one was open, so many of the patrons crammed into the small back bar trying to get a beverage during the wait. We waited approximately 45 min before going to the hostess to see what the deal was. Turns out our call button was never charged so they didn't bother to come find us when it died. We split the fajitas - which they charged us a split plate fee. Have you ever had a full order of fajitas?! It's massive and clearly a two person meal as well as priced like two meals. In regards to that - the prices have definitely increased. Apparently they're planning a renovation and expansion which blows my mind considering their recently closures in Brookfield and Walkers point. You'd think they'd take the time to work on improving their current quality of food and service. They had plenty of open seating to fill all patrons, but must be understaffed. Fajitas were okay. Nothing to rave about. Sadly we won't be back. There are too many fantastic options for Mexican in this area and we won't be waiting time or money here. read more

I've been here many times and I'm consistently disappointed. I really want to like it given it's location, nice patio, and spacious dining. HOWEVER, first, they have messed with their happy hour too many times, it's not even worth the effort now. Second, so many items are crossed off their menu, at first I thought a toddler got a hold of the one I was looking at and soon realized my partner's menu looked the same. When I asked the server why they no longer serve my two favorite items (the mushroom morels and jalapeno appetizer), she mumbled something about not knowing and that she has asked the owner the same thing but doesn't know. Coming from Texas, it's a challenge to find decent Mexican food. Enchiladas, chimichangas, tacos-- I could do again. Queso was a little oddly plated to me. Their salsa is fair. Green enchilada sauce is pretty good. Rice & beans are also seasoned fair. Drinks are solid. Service was a little slow. The main thing for me though is cleanliness. Even though the food is relatively decent, I can't really enjoy when I see flies around and have sticky tables or menus. It really takes away from the dining experience unfortunately. Friendly happy staff from the moment you walk in the door. Chips, salsa and waters within minutes of sitting down. From what we had everything taste amazing. I don't come to Milwaukee often but i saw on google this place had 4 stars but i guess i should have checked yelp too. Our waitress was super sweet and really took care of us but we sat down ordered and minutes later our food was being served. Like so fast it almost seemed like it was already prepared in the back and then just served. I got the taco salad. Basically just lettuce beans and cheese. Absolutely no flavor. I got some hot sauce hoping that would help and they should be ashamed to call it hot sauce lol i basically made soup just to get some flavor and still nothing. My boyfriend got the streak tacos. Again no flavor. The meat didn't quite look right either to where it was not edible. I also got a sprite. But that tasted more like water too. No carbonation at all. The guacamole had a weird texture where it almost looked like it was out of a bag or something? Now we are both driving as fast as we can back to Chicago because we both are having some stomach pain. 100% GOT FOOD POISONING!!!! Please do yourself a favor and don't come here. We have driven passes La Fuente many times on the way back to MiLwaukee from the hospital, but I had heard good things a long while ago so we decided to give them a shot. Traditional Mexican decoration and paintings cover the theme of the establishment. First of all, you can tell they are following closely to the COVID guidelines and all the servers are wearing masks. That being said, we were seated immediately as a three top and given complimentary chips and salsa as we sat down. Both the chips and salsa were awesome. Our server was very attentive and right on top of refills and so on. We didn't order any appetizers to share, but my mom ordered a torta, I got the taco platter and my wife got the chilequiles. They were all very delicious, and my wife's plate was like the biggest plate of food I had ever seen. We then got flan and tres leches to take with us for dessert, and they were very good as well. Pretty tough to mess up Mexican food, IMO. La Fuentes has an upbeat atmosphere, ample variety and friendly staff. I have been to this restaurant multiple times and always have a good experience. They have a great patio to use in the summer, on a busy street but they have a fence that definitely breaks up the noise a bit. The chips are always fresh and the salsa has enough kick for flavor with not so much you can't enjoy your chips for awhile. I typically get chicken tacos with beans and rice. The chicken is generous in the taco and well seasoned- nothing ground breaking but not bland by any means. The margaritas will always hit the spot too. I am Blown Away... Went to La Fuente last night . . . was the 2nd time in a month dining here. I'm blown away by the neg. reviews. Living in So Calf for 25 years I thought I was very (very) picky about my Mexican food and initially disappointed in Milwaukee's Mex restaurants till I found my way a bit. First time at La Fuente's I had the Chille Relleno. I like to see if the restaurant can do a tender poblano battered just right, also a good test to see how tasty the stuffing's are. My daughter had something I haven't seen before in a Mexican restaurant, stuffed bell peppers (Chile Español) listed as a La Fuente house specialty. Both were excellent. Last night me and a partner went back, I had to have those stuffed bell's. Warm chips with decent salsa. I always ask for the hot stuff. Midwest hot is not the same as southwest hot. Most Mexican restaurants will have hotter sauce available. Here's a tip, mix the hot stuff in with the standard salsa, just enough to make it right for you. The server was unassuming and attentive. Not a chatty type but right there and available with what you needed. Not anything like the servers who desperately avoid eye contact in case you might need something. I was surprised by his knowledge of the process when I asked about their technique when preparing peppers. My bells were tender and tasty served with the usual suspects; rice, beans, lettuce/tomato nothing special here (why only 4 stars), pretty typical but not bad. My partner had a mole dish he said he loved, one of his best ever. I am looking forward to going back to try other menu items. read more

Old favorite doesn't make the grade when expanding to new west side location. When the Zarate family opened the original La Fuente restaurant in Walker's Point in 1991, it quickly gained a reputation as one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in Milwaukee. However, despite the crowds in the parking lot at the new La Fuente location (previously housing El Matador) on Bluemound Road, this new dining spot isn't worth the wait. What promised to be an "extensive remodel," according to BizTimes, looks suspiciously like the same old thing when you walk into the 20,000-square-foot Monreal's El Matador restaurant building on 91st and Bluemound. Open for lunch and dinner seven days a week, the new restaurant has exactly the same menu as the original, featuring standard Mexican favorites. When we visited last week, we were greeted by a group of scuzzy looking men smoking right in front of the creaky and unwelcoming front door. The air was brisk, but we hurried past them -- hoping that the indoor decor would be more welcoming than the dreary exterior. Unfortunately, although a fresh coat of paint brightens things up inside, the new location still smells musty and smoky. The spot still retains the same outdated bar, dim lighting fixtures, and shabby feel. We were seated immediately -- by a pleasant host who led us to a table in front of the warm gas lit fireplace. The usual basket of fried tortilla chips and salsa were delivered immediately to our table -- which was a very good thing, considering I was absolutely starving. The warm chips, though a bit thick for my taste, were pleasantly flavored of corn. And the salsa was mild and fresh tasting. But, that's about as pleasant as our experience got. Although waitstaff were attentive, and our food came out with lightening speed, we were exceedingly disappointed with the fare. My husband's chimichanga was crisp and flavorful -- though a bit on the greasy side. The chicken filling was less flavorful than it could have been, and the accompanying rice and beans were bland and flavorless -- about a step up from the fare you'd get at a Taco Bell Chain. And the beans were particularly bad -- the flavor getting more and more pasty the cooler they became. The tomatillo sauce over my enchiladas was pleasantly bright and tart, but the pork inside of had the texture of canned meat, rather than the delicate tender flavor of slow-cooked shoulder. In addition, the goat cheese topping was salty, but lacked definitive flavor. And, of course, my meal was accompanied by the same, disappointing refried beans and rice. I thought the evening might have been redeemed by our margaritas -- since La Fuente always had a reputation for delivering on that level -- however, I can't say I was impressed. Though they were priced right, our traditional lime margaritas (on the rocks) were a bit too sweet and watery to be truly impressive, even for the price. The verdict? Don't bother with the west-end La Fuente. Both of us left feeling bloated and unenthusiastic... and very far from the promise of authentic (or even tasty) Mexican fare. read more

The salsa literally looks like it comes out of a jar, and tastes like it too! I ordered a small burrito a la carte. Small is an understatement. It was literally smaller than my friends TACOS! 3.05 for a tortilla with ONLY MEAT?! That's right - if you want cheese or any other toppings other than meat - you get charged .75 each! I was there with a group of 6 - and the tip was automatically added to our bill - even though on the menu it says they will only do that after 8 pm (which it was not!). Don't put something on your menu and then just make up your own rules anyway please! This place is a huge rip off and the food isn't even very good! I don't think I'll go back again. Its been a couple years since I have been to the original La Fuente in Walker's Point, my memories were fond and I was looking forward to this new location on Blue Mound near my home. The old Monreal's had grown tired and it was time for something new in that location. The new restaurant is aesthetically much better than Monreal's and the seating was immediate early evening on a Sunday night. The service was efficient and chips and salsa showed up immediately and both were very good. The house Margaritas was very average and seemed to be made from a mix. Dinners for my wife and I were suprisingly average. Her vegetable burrito was slightly soupy, with over cooked vegetables and my soft shell taco and enchilada combo was competent but bland flavors at best, both dinners including perfunctory rice and refried beans. With all the recent demand for local and fresh ingredients and bolder flavors, dinner at this new location of La Fuente was not up to contemporary standards found in Mexican restaurants around town. read more

This place is a two-starer in my book. Parking is awful. The bathroom was gross, and trust me I'm a tough cookie, if there was a port-o-potty I would have taken that option. It just comes across as a little trashy overall. Yep, I said it. Not good trashy either. Trust me, I love a good dive. The food was meh. Honestly, I had a really good experience here last night. I see the negative reviews, but I can only speak for myself :) Got there around 7 and was blown away by how HUGE this place is! We were led to the very back room, there were fountains and silly cheesy decorations hanging from the ceiling - cute. Parking was relatively easy, we scored a front row spot. Waters and chips/salsa were brought out promptly. The salsa was super pureed, but had a great taste and a perfect kick. The chips desperately needed salt, but they were warm and that was nice. I got a margarita, and it was terrible. It tasted like windshield wiper fluid. For the money, I just drank it. I followed up with something I knew I'd enjoy - a Corona. Joe got veggie fajitas (smelled awesome), John got Al Pastor tacos and gobbled them up. The pineapple chunks were sauteed with the meat which caramelized them and looked phenomenal. I got the combo plate with an enchilada and a chimichanga. I got ground beef, which was great for the enchilada and not so great for the chimi, but the food itself was actually really good! They sombrero'ed and sang for Joe's "birthday" (news to him!) and surprised him with a nice slice of free cheesecake. The bill was affordable and our service was great! First time at a La Fuente location, but I've always heard great things about the original. I had the Chile Espanol, and it was excellent. The beef inside the pepper is very tasty and savory, and the pepper is mild and flavorful, soft enough to cut through with a fork. The chihuahua cheese is thick, stringy and awesome and adds real substance to the meal. Others in my group had chimichangas, tortas and enchiladas, and all were devoured happily. Great margaritas, tasty guacamole. The service was super quick - we asked for our guacamole to be out first, but the food was ready so fast that there wasn't even a chance for it to come out beforehand! No bother to us. Wish we had room for fried ice cream, but we were stuffed. Everyone was very friendly and we were seated right away even though it was clearly still busy at 7pm on a Saturday. Prices slightly higher than some other comparable places, but worth it! You get a good deal of food for what you pay, and the outdoor patio is perfect. Indoor seating is colorful, not too crowded and pleasant as well. Love the fountains. I could have done without the guy coming around trying to sell us roses every 15-20 minutes, but at the same time it was kind of cute and romantic, so I didn't mind that bad. I keep on clicking between two and three stars. In general, this is nothing special. However, since i live rather close, i tend to go here a lot when I need a quick fix. I never really think their Margaritas are good, and reading through some of the reviews i'm seeing that i'm not the only one. They are boring. The food is standard to what i would expect. I actually really like their salsa, it is one of my favorites by far. The last time i was there the service was rather poor, for the first time. I think she was not happy that we were just ordering margaritas and guac whle enjoying the chips n salsa. There used to be a bad Mexican restaurant in this location (bad, as in serving ketchup for salsa.) So, when a "real" Mexican restaurant (which has a pretty good reputation in Walker's Point) was set to move in, we thought this would be a good change. La Fuente is only a notch higher than the previous restaurant that occupied this location, which doesn't say much. The place is huge and, although there is a lot of Mexican-themed decoration, it just feels fake and cold. Or maybe they just think the suburbanites who are afraid to go downtown will be fooled... Service is not a problem. Everyone is friendly and we were well taken care of. Although I ordered my enchiladas dinner without beans (allergy), and the first time around my plate was steaming with beans. After just a few minutes, and an apology, I received my beanless order. Now, the food... The complimentary chips when we arrived were served warm with salsa. The beer selection is as you would expect. Your regular domestics - Miller, Coors, etc. and the Mexican imports - Tecate, Dos Equis, Bohemia, Pacifico, and Negra Modelo. No margaritas this time around, although they do offer a nice selection of flavors. I had the Enchilada plate with rice (no beans). It was good, but not great. Not bad, just meh. If you are a bland food eater who wan'ts to explore a cuisine that is typically pretty flavorful and spicy, you'll do just fine here. This was my third time here. The first time, I was alone and sat at the bar...thought the food was meh. The second time, we sat out on the patio and had a nice time, Still meh. If you haven't left the midwest then I could see how this is "good" mexican food but it really disappoints. The decor isn't much better. It's old and dirty yet dressed to appear new and festive. There were tacky dollar store-quality hearts strung up along the ceiling, odd "abstract" paintings of who knows what, and oh - definitely saw employees drop chips, look at it, then walk right past. They just don't seem to care about the place. As for the server, it was like he was shouting at us. He was nice enough but dang, librarians must hate you. I understand you need to raise your voice if the place is crowded/loud but it was a quiet Saturday lunch hour and I'm right in front of you. He tried to be funny and his jokes just didn't land. That's fine, I didn't come for a show. And when we were ready to pay, he spent far too long telling us they "absolutely do not" split checks. Very unpredictable place. The first time I ate here was an early Saturday afternoon and the tacos were superb. Probably the best tacos I've ever had. Several weeks later on a Friday night I order the same thing and the shells were not only thinner, they were stale, and there was no cheese at all on the tacos. Eh. Solid 2 stars for the West La Fuente. I'd say it was "just ok." I had the enchiladas with green (tomatillo) sauce, filled with chicken. The green sauce was good, and the cheese on top was a nice touch, but the chicken was definitely not fresh. Served with the standard rice, beans, and garnish (orange and lettuce to the side). My husband had the enchilada/tortilla combo. The tortilla was almost like a soft taco shell - not hard like it should be. He said his dish was ok. Our server was attentive, I will give him that - perhaps a little overly caffeinated (?) for our taste. He was a little jumpy and ready to grab our plates the moment we set our forks down. Not that I'm trying to rip on the guy either, but we could taste his cologne when he'd walk by - kind of unappetizing. He also tried to joke around with us a lot - some people like some over the top jokes - I didn't really get it to be honest. Anyway - solid 2 stars, since I didn't have super high expectations for this restaurant. I had heard mixed reviews about the new La Fuente. I guess my expectations weren't that high to begin with. Today's the first time I visited the "new" La Fuente location (as opposed to their original in Milwaukee's Latin Quarter). I was quick to notice improvement from the previous dump that it was -- El Matador. We ate at El Matador during their final week of business, so upon walking through the dining room, I was pleased that it didn't appear as dark and dingy as El Matador. Was it paint? Carpet removal? A good cleaning? I don't know, but it was a much more bright and appealing place to dine. Despite the interior improvements, we opted to dine outside on their patio as it was a nice, warm Summer's day. I was impressed with our service, quality of my peach margarita (my standard Mexican restaurant cocktail; maybe a little wussy, but I love them!), and my ranchero burrito. I've always found Mexican food restaurants to fit into 3 very distinct categories: 1) the terrible, 2) the average, and 3) the exceptional. One could argue that these categories apply to all types of restaurants, but I find it particularly true the Mexican variety. About 90% fit into the average category, 5% in the terrible and the other 5% in the exceptional. That said, La Fuente West lands squarely in the middle of average, and I think that that's a good thing. When I want a plate of beans, rice, and an entree on or in some type of tortilla, average suits me just fine. On a positive note, I thought the ranchero burrito was an exceptional value. For $9.15, I left the table stuffed. I shouldn't have ate it all, since, three hours after our meal, I'm still stuffed. :\ read more

Not sure what happened... I really enjoyed La Fuente when I first visited the Walker's Point location many years ago. This location was a disappointment the first time I visited a couple of years ago and was even worse on my most recent visit (gave it another chance). Aside from the chips, which were delicious, the food was soggy and bland. Whoever said it was like they took grocery store ingredients and assembled them is doing a disservice to canned Mexican sauces, which I'd say were better than the sauces I was served on my enchiladas here. It wasn't bad... it just wasn't great. I recently visited La Fuente with my roommate and her family for a casual lunch experience. I ordered the Torta combo since it was one of the more decently priced items on the menu and I haven't been able to find a Torta in the states as tasty as the ones I had from street vendors in Mexico. Having been in Milwaukee for 3 years now and only venturing out for Mexican food two or three times, my expectations by now are pretty low. I understand its Cinco de Mayo, but when you say you don't allow reservations and then make our family wait for over an hour and a half (when quoted 45 mins when we got here) saying that the parties who arrived after us had reservations and that's why they were seated first, shame on you. After reading all the negative reviews about this place, I don't get it! First time here and right away the server greater us, he was very friendly, timely, and helpful. The food came out in a decent time. I had the fish tacos and they were delicious. My partner had the streak tacos and he enjoyed them!
