Went to this place for dinner Friday night with my family. This place was AWESOME!!! The ambiance is super cute, like you're entering a magical cottage in a fairy tale. But it's also low key and totally casual. The staff was super sweet and knowledgable. They also tolerated my crazy toddler and were extra kind to her. Parking was easy peasy. Everyone LOVED their meals. The tomate empanada was my favorite. And the chocolate crepe - TO DIE FOR!!! I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a yummy meal. What a gem! Wasn't sure what to make of an Argentinian-French fusion, but they nailed it. We tried the chicken empanada, the queso tamale, and forestiére crepe. All were really, really tasty! So far I have only visited for Sunday brunch. There is a special Sunday menu with savory breakfast crepes. The crepes are large and fresh in the morning but not heavy. Exactly the type of small, bohemian, relaxed, and welcoming place we hoped to find in artsy craftsy Black Mountain. The South American platter was delicious - the chili pepper candied mango was quite divine. The stroganoff crepe, chicken empanada, and spinach empanada did not disappoint either. Crepe Suzette and espresso was the perfect way to wrap up a ridiculously decadent weekday lunch. I cannot understand the negative reviews - maybe from those in a hurry who prefer microwaved fast food and national brand names. Nestled into a wooded lot where you can sit on the back porch of Western North Carolina and enjoy the sounds of near by train horns and soft music in the background. To be very clear, I am giving 5 stars for the food, which was excellent. I am not allowing the slow service to affect my rating, as I will explain below. We arrived quite early for our 7 pm reservation on a Saturday night. The server indicated that we were welcome to take any open table (there were a few), but that he was a behind and would get to us when he could. That ended up being about 30 minutes. As we waited, we realized that the entire restaurant is staffed by two people-- the server, who also hosted, bussed tables and did dishes, and the cook, who made literally every piece of food from scratch that every person ate. Once the server began serving our table, he was attentive and friendly. We started with the French onion soup. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of French onion soup, but we had heard a recommendation from a local for it. It took maybe another half hour for the soup to come out, but it was worth the wait. We were not disappointed with the flavor! My husband is still talking about it 3 days later. For dinner, I ordered two empanadas, the tomato and the eggplant. My husband ordered the tamales, the pork and chicken. Both entrees were wonderful. The portions were just right, and served with a light salad. I enjoyed the tomato empanada the best. The eggplant didn't end up being a flavor mixture I liked quite as well, perhaps because it was out of season. My husband thought the tamales were well done, and he enjoyed the sauce that came with them. For dessert, we ordered the Buenos Aires crepe to share. It was perfection. Probably the best sweet crepe I've ever had. I want to go back and try every dessert crepe they make. They all sounded wonderful. My overall recommendation: keep in mind that this is a small restaurant with a staff of 2. The service is similar to what you might get in Europe-- France specifically-- you're here to enjoy a made to order meal, so slow down, get a bottle of wine, and bring a book if you need entertainment during the wait. Lastly, the prices. This place is wildly underpriced, in my opinion. We had a wonderful 3 course meal for what have cost us twice as much in our hometown. read more

While traveling with a friend and her daughter, we had a reservation at La Guinguette and arrived on time at 5:45 on a Wed night. The place filled quickly and in spite of the sign out front that they were short staffed (please be patient), the waitress did a great job keeping up with everything. I had a black bean and cheese tamale and a mushroom tamale. I love tamales and these were the best I've had. My friend had empanadas and the mushroom crepe (it has a more sophisticated name on the menu) to share with her daughter and they were very pleased. I tried the mushroom crepe and it was delicious! For dessert, the three of us shared the fruit/chocolate crepe. It was heavenly and I'm so glad we ordered it. I don't typically have dessert and don't like overly sweet treats. The chocolate is blended in house - yummy. The entry to this place is cute as can be. I'll keep it on my dining list to share with friends anytime I hear of someone going to the Black Mountain area. My boyfriend and I had originally planned to go into Asheville for dinner, but our reservation wasn't until 8:45, and after a long day of leaf-looking we were starving! We decided to check out a place in black mountain, where we were staying, rather than drive into Asheville and deal with nightmare parking downtown on a Saturday night....that was definitely the right call! This place had all kinds of small town mountain charm. The decor was rustic and the string lights leading up to the restaurant set the mood before we even walked in the door. A live violinist contributed to the perfect date night ambience. We ordered the cheese plate to start...a fabulous selection of cheeses and berries, it did not disappoint! (And they didn't skimp on the cheeses either. It was plenty for two or even three or four.) I had the La Normandie crepe and John had the beef bourguignon crepe (a special). Both were fantastic!! We finished it off with a La Buerre crepe (sugar and butter), which was heavenly. The service was excellent as well. Tobia was attentive to every detail, and had a great sense of humor! Every aspect of this small restaurant made a huge impression. Their aesthetic is absolutely lovely. I went on a warm spring day and La Guinguette had it's windows and doors open, letting in the breeze and the natural light. I could have sat there all day. Their food is fantastic. Super authentic and delicious crepes. They have a great wine menu as well. The service is unparalleled. Both the waiter and one of the owners came and spoke to my table often. They took care of us and were an absolute pleasure to talk to. The whole experience was phenomenal. If you are in the Black Mountain area you should absolutely make time for this treasure. read more

This is such a sweet little place! Very cozy, intimate atmosphere perfect for a quiet and relaxing date. And I loved the French guitar/accordion soundtrack in the background. The menu is perfectly simple: appetizers, soups, empanadas, tamales, and crepes both savory and sweet. I had the ratatouille crepe which was tasty and surprisingly hardy, with nice strong swiss cheese and well-seasoned veggies. As other reviewers have indicated, this restaurant has major strengths and major weaknesses. Exploit its strengths. Come here on a pretty day or evening when you can sit outside on the relaxing deck. The place is set back from the street and is enveloped with beautiful flowers and trees. The service is friendly, but they're understaffed (I saw one server attempt to serve 10+ tables at once; with 3 or so empty ones waiting to be bussed) Also, don't come here if you're really hungry and can't wait 30+ minutes to be served. Underwhelming. We are in town visiting and we're pretty excited to try this restaurant but chalked it up to a fail. We started with the tapenade which was pretty decent. For dinner we had an order of tamales (one veggie and one black bean) and empanadas (one veggie and one chicken). The chicken was super dry. Nothing had a ton of flavor. Just got a phone call from the restaurant at 11:45am on February 13, one day prior to our reservations on February 14. Now keep in mind I emailed three weeks ago to make this reservation for 7 PM and I received an email back confirming the reservation. But one day before my reservation I am told there is a fixed menu tomorrow night and we have no choice but to eat from this menu. Planned our trip a month ago and we looked at the menu online and chose this restaurant based on that menu. Also, there was NOTHING about a fixed Valentine's Day menu. But now one day before Valentine's Day when we can't get reservations anywhere else we're told about this fixed menu. Very disappointing and very annoying. This place is weird. Although billed as Argentine-French, it's really pseudo-Mexican with crepes. I was really worried when I walked in on a Saturday night at 6pm to see only one couple seated. For starters, the beer I wanted was out of stock. So I ordered a different one. When I asked for a second, that too was now gone. Clearly they operate on thin inventory. I started with the potato-leek soup which was home-made, hot and quite good. Then I had two tamales which were rather tasteless. Then I paid the bill and went to the local ice cream place to fill my stomach. Should have driven to Asheville for a better dinner. I predict this place will soon be out of business. read more

The empanada was tasty and the coffee was delicious. The service was borderline terrible and the bathrooms were not very clean. The two staff that were serving everyone seemed spacey and frazzled. A very quaint restaurant in what looks like a converted house. The rooms are bright and cheery. The menu has options for those who are gluten intolerant or have celiac disease as well as vegetarian options. The crepes are made from a buckwheat flour so they are gluten free. I got la paysanne, and it was very good. My friend got la normandie and loved it. I love empanadas and wish they were made from corn flour because they sound good. But they are made Argentinian style because this is a French-Argentinian cafe. read more

It's a pretty good, eclectic, yet slightly pricey place to eat. It's certainly one of the more unique places to eat in Black Mountain. That said, we thought that the dessert crepes were wonderful, but the dinner crepes were just OK. The empanadas were pretty good. The owners are French and Argentinian, and have been immersed in a genuine love for good food and good company for long enough to be masters of the realm!
