It saddens me to have to write this review because I love the food at this place so much. I attempted to place it to go pick up order for my lunch break and the phone line kept going to voicemail because I guess they were having some kind of system outage. So I drive from work to the restaurant location which mind you was about a 10 minute drive and they are doing construction so that adds a bit more time I go in and I'm told that because of the system outage there is no card so cash is the only option and luckily for me it's one of the days I had cash on me so I proceeded to place my order. I was told it'll be about 10 minutes before the order was ready and I waited. Go back inside the lady that took my order, gave me the bag of my food, and I proceeded to leave. Upon me getting to work sitting down getting ready to eat my food. I opened it and it's a box of french fries. So I paid $21 for a box of fries or I turned back around and go pick up my order. I of course go back pick up my order because hell it's only about a 10 minute drive. I get there and the lady who took my order and gave me my order yells out to the other lady she's here give me a flan. I proceeded to wait because they are dealing with other people as the lady clearly saw me not in a very good mood. Once she finishes with the other patrons, she then proceeds to grab my bag which I'm assuming has been sitting at the table for I don't know how long and gives it to me and offers me a flan for my inconvenience of having to come back. I proceed to tell her I'm not a fan of flan as I don't eat sweets that often. She then proceeds to offer me a soda which I already bought during my 10 minute wait for my food to get ready. She just looks at me with her hands, crossed and apologizes for the inconvenience and doesn't say anything more. she should have offered to comp half of my meal or giving me a free voucher for something next time because it wasn't inconvenience as I've already spent half of my lunchtime going back-and-forth to this place to obtain my lunch. I've never had any problems with the customer service at any of their locations even when they had a ton more locations in the past years. This was a very disappointing trip. I've seen this lady there for many years. I've had a pleasant interactions with her and for her just to apologize and act like it was minimal, it's kind of bullshit in my mind. read more

First time going to a Mexican seafood Place. Little dive, nice cold beers but nothing more than mediocre. Food ver bland. Chips stale, salsa very tasty though. Guacamole bland, added salt and lime kicked it up on flavor. Do not expect tortillas of any nature. Also only sides are yellow rice, French fries or onion rings, and lettuce tomato. I've only been here once and that was enough to convince me that they have some of the best street style taqueria in Dallas. The tripas are crispy and tasty as were all the options. Another one of my favorite Mexican places in Dallas. Huge portions, great salsa, tons of fried items, plus everything is super cheap (especially if you snag a lunch special). I've never had anything I didn't like from La Jaivita. The Nachos Marineros are simply delicious - shrimp, ceviche, avocado slices, pico de gallo, monterrey jack cheese and jalapeños served on tortilla chips. The Caldo (Soup) is also great but a bit on the spicy side. If you are really hungry try the lunch special that has a little bit of everything on the menu. It is so amazingly good yet inexpensive. The waitresses are required to dress a little skanky (really short skirts) so if that's your thing then you'll really love this place. I personally find the dress code a bit trashy but the food makes up for the Hooters-like atmosphere. I wouldn't recommend this place if you have an eating disorder or are on some crazy diet. So much fried food!!! You'll feel guity afterward! read more

If you're looking to spice up your brunch scene, I would definitely recommend La Jaivita Restaurant as an option. So no eggs benny, pancakes, etc. but if bold Mexcian flavors are how you want to start your weekend morning, this is for you! VENUE: Located right behind the Original Pancake House on Lemmon, turn into the side street and you'll find a parking lot (wonderful if you know how bad parking can be in some places in Dallas). The restaurant is fairly large with tables and booths for your choosing. Atmosphere was just the right amount of casual in that I didn't feel underdressed wearing a blouse and sandals but I didn't feel over dressed next to the guy in his tshirt and flipflops. The music is on point - all latino/latina artists with the perfect poppy beat to get you woken up. FOOD: They start you off with chips and salsa - the salsa is pretty good. Has a good kick but is a bit watery for my taste. The chips are crispy and taste like butter. I ordered the Omelet and added chorizo and jalapeno to it. It came perfectly with a side of refried beans. I had filled up with so much chips and salsa that I was able to take the rest of my omelet home for a great supper. The mimosas are $3 for those of you wondering SERVICE: I was slightly disappointed in service. Our server was friendly enough but I felt like we had to hail him down every time we wanted something (the check, to-go boxes) and I'm not sure if he was having an off morning, but when we asked for something it would take a while for him to come back our way, he would look at us, and his face would show that he suddenly remembered that we had asked for something. We are Foodies who ate Pulpo Fritos, which is fried octopus that was served with minced jalapeños, chopped onions, tomatoes, & cilantro which could be mixed up altogether or separately. We then had a Vuelve a la vida, which is a seafood cocktail minus oysters (not in season) but ceviche was substituted. Sup. is an entree size vs. Lg which is about a water glass size. Finally we enjoyed scallops cooked in garlic sauce, albeit they were bay scallops and not enough of them so we did have to eat the rice even though we are trying to follow a low carb diet. I love riding Harleys in Baja Mexico, not only is it beautiful but the food is awesome. La Paz is on the coast and has great Mexican seafood. Eating at La Jaivita is no different than eating at numerous places I have eaten there. Casual, clean, safe and super friendly with fresh and delicious food. I flew in to Dallas and was hoping for some good ol' tex mex while here for the weekend. Well....I guess there is always lunch tomorrow. The only good thing I had here was the iced tea. That I would give a solid 5 stars. To compliment my tea was a Grocery Store version of a deep fried taco and fluata with microwave quality rice. This portion of the meal I give a measly 2 stars. The worst part were the recommended onion rings. What they did to that onion I would not wish on my worst enemy. Maybe my expectations are too high. I guess I will find out tomorrow with the next best tex mex joint I can find near my hotel. one person mentioned that this place is cheap. What a treat to find a Tex-Mex restaurant that only serves seafood!! Catfish tacos, shrimp-stuffed jalapenos, fried calamari, and more! The food is great and the service almost as good. There are bottles of several different hot sauces on each table, but I preferred the house salsa, which is thick but not chunky and light brown in color. I shared a plate of their lunch special that had shrimp flautas, a small cup of shrimp cocktail, fries, onion rings, something else fried that had crab meat inside and catfish tacos. I also ordered a regular sized shrimp cocktail. We spent about $16 and were stuffed. Our middle aged waitress was sporting a tight skirt but she was incredibly nice and was fast. All I have to say is do not judge by the exterior! The first time a friend drug me to this place I refused to get out of the car. Upon entering and seeing soup with floating fish and shrimp ceviche I was very nervous about what my taste buds could endure. I saw a man drinking a big cup of what looked like milk but had something floating in it with hot sauce on top and I was so curious I had to ask my short skirted waitress. She states she will bring me a sample of what is so called rice water. I tasted it but thats about it- it came right back out into my napkin. So how does it get five stars you ask if I seem so sheltered- Let me start off by saying warm hot sauce and chips is the best thing you can say to me when im hungry. The chips never taste burned which im very sensitive too and the hot sauce is always warm and plentiful. I have come to crave and yes I literally have cravings that cause my jaw to clench for their #9 lunch special. It is a huge piece of flattened tenderized chicken sauteed in what seems to be salt, pepper, and butter with a hint of seasoning and then topped with green chives served with salad (choice of italian or ranch- go with italian it meshes well) and a side of spanish rice that isnt globby or overloaded with seasoning. It all goes perfect together. Now to top it off, they serve it with lime wedges (order extra) to drizzle over the chicken and I promise you will melt in heaven. They also serve bread slathered in butter and toasted. I dont eat white bread but it is fabulous! I go here weekly probably and dont even shun about the exterior anymore. I tell all my friends it will be ok. Now Ive never ordered anything except the "pollo" so I cant say what their general consensus is. But definitely eat the chicken! read more

Foods not bad but the shrimp are small and not fresh. Service from the waitress was not bad but the women at the register are rude and do not provide good customer service. Food is not priced high but they definitely try to get money from you when u order anything additional like limes for your salad. An ok place to come eat not the best in my book but also not the worst. A friend of mine loves the seafood here and has her favorites here like the jalapenos stuffed with shirmp , which are awesome by the way. that have all sorts of seafood my favorite thing to order is the seafood soup served with toasted bread. its a small place but it always busy with customers. We stopped in shortly before closing and they were very gracious about serving us and didnt not rush us to leave or anything. read more

The service was so exceptionally awful that I feel inspired to share this with you so that you can save your money. We told the waitress that we wanted two child portions of the fried fish, one for there and one to go. She served us two adult portions but since we don't go there enough, we don't know the difference in portion size (as if that should matter anyway). Then the bill came. We were charged with the adult serving. Well, server's mistake, as we were abundantly clear. Then things got truly bizarre, greedy, and inappropriate. They only lowered the price of one of the dishes by three dollars (not five, which was the difference between the kid and adult portion) AND insisted that WE RETURN OUR LEFTOVERS of the one our kids were eating. Since we did NOT PAY THE ADULT PRICE, we were not entitled to the leftovers. Interesting, since we paid more than the child price, so doesn't that entitle us? A uniquely horrible experience.
