I also disliked that the tables were very small and circular. We ordered two salads, two lasagnas, and a pizza. We found this to be ample for 6 people, and came out to about $23 per person after tip and tax. My favorite bite was the salad with the beets and goat cheese. The bolognese had good tomato flavor, and I liked the pork sausage in the rapini, but I found the lasagnas to be a bit too heavy and cheesey. My partner and I were celebrating our one year anniversary and were recommended this spot by a friend. What really sold me is the various lasagna flights that you could get! I could make a reservation online, which included choosing the patio (so quaint) so I was sold. When we arrived, we were promptly seated and had to walk through the restaurant to get to the back patio. The inside restaurant is quite small and you have to walk past the open kitchen to get to the back patio but that wasn't an issue. The back patio was super cute but VERY loud. We were anticipating more of a quiet, romantic vibe but this was not it. There were people drinking after work, some people celebrating on a date night and others that were pre-gaming before going out to the bars. The dress code was varied, and some people were in sweats vs nice dresses and ties. So the vibes were a little weird for me but honestly, the part that really threw me off was how echoey and loud the patio was. I felt like I couldn't hear anything and my partner could barely hear me. But all of that to say, I still enjoyed it. Our server was a typical Italian with very high energy. He came back multiple times to see what we would order and repeat it so quickly that sometimes I wasn't sure I understood what he said (pair that with the loud environment, I was struggling lol) but all in all, still would go back! This spot is not your typical Italian restaurant though as they really are known for pizza and lasagna. We got an appetizer, lasagna flight and another big piece to share, and tiramisu for dessert. We loved this place for many reasons! First of all, the atmosphere is so cozy and there's multiple small rooms over two floors. They do seat you right next to other parties while leaving all the other tables in the room empty which could be a negative for some people. So I went here randomly and honestly it felt like one of those little hidden spots you accidentally find and end up loving. The garden patio is such a vibe, super cozy and kind of makes you forget you are still in Manhattan. It feels more like you are sitting in someone's backyard in Italy than a busy city restaurant. The food is straight up comfort Italian. The pizza was thin, fresh, and not greasy at all, more authentic style with good ingredients instead of overloaded toppings. It was packed on a Friday night but the service was super quick! The lasagna bolognese was tasty but underwhelming. I would've preferred to have another type of pasta than to have lasagna noodles stacked on top of each other with super thin layers of sauce in between. The desserts were pretty disappointing. The cannoli had some sort of citrus in the cream, which had I known before, I would not have ordered it. The flavors were weird and not good. Super lively but also pretty noisy, so just a heads-up if you're going for a date night like we were, it's hard to talk over the crowd. We went walking around Washington Square Park during the 2026 Winter Storm. Looking for a place for cafe mocha we were so happy La Lanterna was still open after all these years. We went there when we attended NYU in the late 1970s-1980s. I had a panini which was excellent and cafe mocha, which could have been hotter but still tasted good. La Lanterna was the perfect middle ground between East/West Village and very close to our concert venue. As a lasagna aficionado, this hit the spot. I came here because a friend recommended it to me and it really impressed me overall! I had a reservation but was still seated about ten minutes late (even with plenty of open seating), which was a little annoying, but thankfully the atmosphere made up for it. Although it was relaxing, I will say it was just a tiny bit warm even with the air on, which got a little uncomfortable toward the end of my meal. The server was great. The menu here is enormous. Not only was there a huge selection of food, but I have never seen a martini menu that extensive! I ended up getting the Mango Tango and Banana martinis and both were dangerously good. The pours were generous and both drinks were so smooth and flavorful they disappeared a little too fast. I was really surprised that the banana one tasted exactly like... bananas. And it had no burn/gross aftertaste! For food, I HAD to do the carne lasagna flight, which is such a clever idea! The bolognese was pretty standard, the rapini was actually really unique and reminded me a bit of a breakfast quiche, and the pancetta one had a super bacon-forward flavor I loved. The stairs are very narrow so consider if you're older or not so stable on your feet asking to eat upstairs. It is very dark so you will need the candle to read the menu. Met some friends at La Lanterna for a weekday visit while their family was visiting town. As a super old school italian joint in the West Village, the space is cramped, and they seem to fit as many tables as possible in the dimly lit space. Service was just OK - our waiter was kind and knowledgable, but at times it took lengthy waits to place orders or get our food or drinks. All that said, we did enjoy the sangria and the food they're known for - specifically their lasagna flights. With a seemingly limited cocktail menu but an extensive wine list, we decided to try the sangria, made with port wine and brandy. It was boozy and flavorful, and we ended up getting two each. We even persuaded others to get it for their drink after trying ours - it was that good. If you're looking for "healthier" items, you're pretty much out of luck at La Lanterna, as their specialties are heavier italian food - every lasagna is made with Béchamel: a thick creamy white sauce made from butter, flour and milk. It is a staple in traditional italian cooking, I get it, but I just don't think it's that great. As for the lasagna flights: There's no way to mix-and-match. You either choose the meat, the veggie, or the Mare Y Monti (2 sea-based lasagna, 2 land-based lasagna). Everyone that ordered the lasagna flights enjoyed them, but I didn't think they were anything special. We also tried the margherita pizza, and the mesclun salad - both were great and solid, but nothing special. While I wouldn't choose to come back on my own volition, considering I personally enjoy a healthier diet, I wouldn't necessarily avoid it altogether. That said, I would ask to sit in the back garden area on the upstairs level, rather than the cramped inside or downstairs dining rooms. read more

I returned to the city after all these years and had it again this month, and it's still the best tiramisu I've ever had: perfect texture, not too sweet, and exactly the way I remembered. We had an absolutely delightful experience here for a friend's birthday. The restaurant is very crowded and eclectic but it's what you expect from a popular local restaurant in New York. We also had a salad to share which was delicious, and then my table mates all got different flatbreads, and I got the cacio pepe lasagna.
