This was my first time visiting a La Madeleine and it was on a wonderful day. The sun shining made for the inside of the restaurant to have a soft and warm atmosphere especially thanks to the fun woody architecture and the active fireplace. The employees were kind and helpful and the food tasted pretty good. The bathrooms were also clean. I wished there was a little more flavor to the pumpkin French toast as it didn't stand out over a normal French toast but overall it was good. I also wished that they provided more syrup, silverware, and napkins with our dishes. I understand that it was self serve in that way, but the syrup specifically was limited. We've been here for breakfast a couple of times, but this was our first time trying a savory lunch! We opted for the beef Stroganoff crepe and the Croque Madame with a sunny-side-up egg. We also ordered a drip coffee and a cappuccino. Our first impression? The portion sizes were large--very hearty and filling! The beef Stroganoff crepe was really nice. It had the same braised beef and mushrooms both on top and folded inside. The savoriness paired well with the soft, warm crepe, and I especially enjoyed the crispy edges. The sour cream sauce added another layer of flavor, though I think I could have done without it to keep the dish feeling lighter. The Croque Madame was also a big portion! It consisted of two slices of bread with cheese and ham in between, more cheese on top, and a sunny-side-up egg. We hadn't expected the sandwich to be so large--it probably would have been enough for us to share. That said, the generous amount of ham and cheese made it a bit too salty for my taste. I noticed the next day that we had been charged for an extra coffee ($3.49), but unfortunately, it was too late to get a refund. When I returned, the staff explained that order numbers reset daily, making it difficult to track, but they were very friendly and offered me a makeup item worth about $4-$5. I chose the potato galette, which I had been eyeing for a while, and it turned out to be a great choice! The galette was crispy on the outside, with a strong onion and seasoning fragrance in every bite. Given the size of the entrées, it would have been too much food for a meal unless I had only ordered a salad. On its own, the galette seems like a great morning item, but it also would have been too much for me had I ordered it along with a pastry for breakfast. My wife and I came in on a Sunday for brunch, probably around 10:30/11 AM. There wasn't a wait and the restaurant wasn't too busy so we were able to order and find a table to sit at. Ambiance was nice as most of these restaurants are, nothing out of the ordinary. Always love the French teachings over the speakers in the restrooms, super cool! To eat, I ordered the Breakfast Croissant Sandwich: scrambled eggs with bacon and cheddar on a butter croissant with a side of fresh fruit! In addition to the sandwich we ordered a Dark Cherry and Yogurt Danish. The sandwich was much smaller than I thought it would be--like tiny. I was pretty disappointed, but still ate it. I'd recommend ordering two if you're hungry. The bread was soft and flaky and the small amount of egg and bacon inside it was good too. The plus was definitely the Danish! It was delicious!! Been craving to come eat here because of how fancy and delicious the food is, I've gone several times in San Antonio and everything was perfect I would give more then 5 stars if it was possible. But here is a disappointment, horrible customer service, workers rarely understood me and acted very unprofessional, I ordered an iced hazelnut latte, they gave me a regular vanilla that tasted like nothing but milk. We ordered a couple of their holiday plates for Thanksgiving. We got both the ham and turkey options which were delicious. For sides, we tried the mashed potatoes, broccoli, stuffing and green beans. They all weren't that bad, however, I really didn't care for their stuffing. Something about the taste and the apples I didn't like. Both plates came with a small cup of cranberry sauce and mushroom sauce. I absolutely love the taste of their mushroom sauce so we got an extra cup of it. Please allow me to preface my review by saying that we love coming here often to allow us to eat outside with our small dog. He loves it too! We really enjoy the breakfasts, sandwiches, salads, entrees and pastries. Lately, the pesto pasta dish I order often has changed. It's very bland now, and just not as good as the previous recipe. I mentioned it to the manager at the location we go to, and he told me that several customers have complained since the change. By default, my go to lunch / dinner has always been Honest Mary's every time I come to Trader Joes for a grocery run but I wanted to try something different today and found la Madeleine just a few minutes away. This place has so much character! I love the layout of the restaurant and really appreciate the uniforms that the staff wears. Everything feels really authentic I feel like I've walked into a portal and ended up in Europe somewhere. On to the food: Chicken la Madeleine - balsamic-marinated chicken topped with creamy wild mushroom sauce with side of broccoli and rice. The chicken breast tastes surprising soft and pairs really well with the wild mushroom sauce! The mushroom sauce has a strong flavor but not so strong that it's overpowering the meal. The rice could be done better as it is kind of mushy. The broccoli has no seasoning at all but my tip is to dip that broccoli into the mushroom sauce or completely submerge it into the Cream of Mushroom soup! Then it just tastes amazing! Cream of Mushroom - This soup has great flavors and is one of the best I've tried. Take that side of broccoli and dip in the soup for a great creamy vegetable experience! Quiche Florentine (spinach) - This quiche here is the highlight of the meal. The inside of the quiche is super fluffy and seasoned very well. The sides have the right crisp and I think this was baked to perfection. I've had some bad experiences with quiches in Austin area because it's always so salty but this one here is just right! Classic Strawberry Napoleon - This dessert is very flaky and I recommend just grabbing it by hand with the paper wrapped around it and bite it rather than use any utensils. I think it tastes just ok. It's not too sweet but I removed the top layer of white sugary topping. The staff forgot some items while I was eating but she was very apologetic about it and all is forgiven. I love La Madeleine - I love ALL things French. But this location is stealing joy rather than giving it. The bakery items are quite lovely - but ordering one is a very unpleasant experience - and really this is the WORST aspect of this location. I have been coming every week on a certain day for a standing meeting and I am routinely ignored when wanting to place an order, and when I am finally recognized, I am asked (in a gruff and abrupt tone of voice) - "What do you want??" - it is never pleasant. The woman serving in this area of the restaurant is especially rude and makes us feel like we are bothering her by standing there wanting to give the restaurant our business. Today she stood as far away from me as possible while I placed my order and then yelled, "WHAT?" when she couldn't hear me. The very first week I was there I ordered a "pain au chocolat" with French pronunciation- it's what its label reads and I enjoyed the opportunity to speak just a tiny bit of French - the woman looked and sounded extremely annoyed when she said back to me in a sarcastic tone, "A Chocolate Croissant?" - like I was quite stupid for ordering it as it is labeled. She clearly doesn't enjoy working with customers or in a specifically "French" bistro. If I didn't have a standing meeting in this location, I would be very reluctant to keep coming here. I have been tolerating this for many weeks - since August, but today's treatment just finally snapped the last straw of patience I have had with this place, and thus I am writing a poor review. I am not one to leave poor reviews - I was taught if you don't have anything kind to say, don't say anything at all - but I hope this might help bring about some change. While the other staff are not as acerbic as the bakery server, they are still very slow to acknowledge a customer - I often have to stand at the counter for much longer than is necessary, especially when the restaurant is mostly empty, before someone notices I am there and will take my order. The overall look here is a lovely French country one, but it is quite dirty. It especially needs a good dusting and it's very common for the tables to have crumbs and smudges still on them. It is a shame that such a potentially lovely place offers such terrible customer service and I do hope someone who has some influence will make some improvements soon. At the very least, some kindness from the servers would go a very long way to helping us overlook the other issues with this location. read more

Today on: the worst crêpe I've ever had. At least I didn't have to pay for it myself. I was invited for a breakfast meeting to La Madeleine, and I excitedly joined not only for meeting content, but for what I anticipated to be a great breakfast. The guy at the counter suggested that the best crêpe was the strawberry Nutella crêpe. If that's the best crêpe they have, I will never be getting crêpes at La Madeleine, ever, ever, again. A crêpe is a thin, delicious pancake filled with... I don't know, it can be whatever, but it should be all proportioned in moderation. There shouldn't be one overwhelming flavor that not only blocks out the delicateness of the crêpe, but also every other portion of the meal. I'm not sure what word they used to describe the goo that goes in the strawberry Nutella crêpe, but it is not strawberries, nor is it Nutella , and there is so much of it that it feels sort of like you're eating a Boston cream doughnut. Both the consistency of the goo, and the amount that resided within the eggy layers of crêpe. I don't think that there was an entire strawberry. Not one entire strawberry, within the entire dish. All it was was crêpe and goo and some chocolate swirls on top. In fact, the more I think about it, the more Boston cream pie donuty it was. I feel almost certain that this has to be a chef issue, and not a "la Madeline" issue however, it was pretty gross, and I'll be holding off my future crêpe endeavors for a crêpe specific local. Lol. The service was great - the staff are helpful and extremely friendly I feel like that's the case in all La Madeleine's. I usually order a chicken salad from here, but went for the avocado toast with an over easy egg and a side fruit. It was plenty and OK flavor-wise. The yolk on my egg was over-cooked but it the bite with the avocado toast was a delight! I had grabbed an orange juice (which was just a Simply brand bottle) and wish I didn't because the fruit helped balance everything out and I could've been just fine with just water. Also you're not breaking the bank. My husband and I shared a pastry I think it was a strawberry yogurt danish and wooooow it was so good! My husband ordered the breakfast croissant and it was super small! (So heads up there) It's not a busy place, family friendly, large and small groups are welcome! Oo la la! C'est magnifique! I love this place for a number of reasons. It's charming inside, especially on a winter day or a dreary rainy day. They have a couple of gas fireplaces, and wooden floors and tables. It's funny, it reminds me of being at Disney Epcot or Universal in the Harry Potter section. Seriously, the theme is so well put together you feel transported to another time. Alas, I met a friend there for lunch on a typical, hot, sunny Texas day, so it didn't have the maximum impact. It's not just the atmosphere I love. The service has always been very good as has the food quality, and the prices are reasonable. My friend had the sampler- which he enjoyed. Needed an emergency infusion of good coffee after the euphemistically titled "Medium Roast" that was available with our hotels free breaksfast. The Hop Queen is originally from New Orleans, and like her IPA tastes, she expects coffee to have some body and character. la Madeleine always delivers a good consistent product.
