I've driven past this place for years. I was craving a Cinnamon roll so I decided to finally go in. Bad idea. The guy at the counter today Feb. 19th 2025, around noon, was entirely off-putting. I saw the cases with the rolls in them but there were no bags to put them in, so I went to the counter to ask if customers are allowed to grab the rolls ourselves. I also said it was my first time in the bakery. The guy just stared at me and practically grunted. I don't know if he was intoxicated or special needs so I gave up and went to grab the roll myself. Again, there were no bags but there were parchment tissues so I used those to get the pastry. When I went to checkout, the guy at the counter suddenly knew how to speak English and ask customer service questions. I suppose he was just being rude or discriminatory intentionally before, until he saw I was actually there to purchase something. If you are also Black, please beware of this location(on Western Ave). The management needs to hire sober, non-discriminatory people to work in this location. And get better food. BTW, The roll tasted like trash--dry and zero sweetness. Cinnamon rolls are supposed to be sweet. No wonder the store was empty. Go elsewhere. read more

This is the second time I place an order on line and when I arrive to pick up my order , it is incorrect because the items I ordered are sold out ? So you charge me but do not guarantee my items I paid for ? So ridiculous ! I'm not one to be confrontational, mistakes happen but it's how you go about it , trying to be sneaky and not tell me up front instead package the wrong items and act like everything is ok it's not ! This is the second time I try La Monarca Bakery (2 separate locations) & I'm genuinely not impressed at all. I wish I would've had the great experience other people claim they've experienced, but this place has fallen short to meet my expectations not just once but twice! I was craving tiramisu & their tiramisu was the hugest disappointed. I literally took 2 bites & ended up trashing it. (Sorry God) I sincerely dislike doing that, but I knew no one else would eat it & I can't simply give away things I've already ate from especially during Covid times. It was just beyond dry! Dry as the Sahara, dry like my mouth after eating a salted pretzel with no water in hand, dry like the bottom of my mans patas (feet). Ok I'll stop...It wasn't just dry, but it was also lacking in that coffee flavor that those of us that like tiramisu enjoy so much (the second bite was to determine if coffee flavor stood out at least) I really wanted to like the Monarca, but my 2 experiences so far have totally sucked. I love their mini conchas, but today I've ordered a bunch of them and it was all stale.

I'm always delighted by their exceptionally friendly customer service. They bring heart and humanity to a streetscape just outside that exemplifies the grinding and brutal urban reality of Los Angeles: impersonal traffic, poor people slogging to jobs, and endless commercialism. The inside has lots of natural light from large windows, yet manages to feel cosy with wooden tables and chairs. This one has rather more high bar stools than chairs which I am not fond of. Yet, their WiFi works so it's fine to try and work here on your laptop. Their music soundtrack is always exciting, vibrant Mexican pop that is dimensionally more complex and improved compared to the fluff that U.S. pop machines churn out. I love their chilled drinks and their coffee lattes with horchata are exceptional. I'm not counting the sugar. Their little cookies are so delightful as well. read more

I love La Monarca Oaxacan and de la olla coffees. They're absolutely my all time favorites. I also love their molletes which is made with their signature bolillo bread. They spread mashed beans on half a bread with melted cheese on top. It comes with a salsa verde that is such a nice touch to the mollete. I have tried a couple of their sweet bread and cakes and everything has been amazing, but my go-to breakie from here is either a cafe de la olla which comes slightly sweetened with piloncillo and has a nice touch of cinammon or an Oaxacan coffee which is half cafe de olla with Mexican chocolate and a mollete. I did the order online but called to confirm and the employee who answered me was very helpful and made sure the order was processed correctly. I live in TX but I am originally from Los Angeles and this location is a staple for me when I visit. I love going to go get coffee and desserts. Any time I have gone, the atmosphere has been very welcoming, therefore, I enjoy going and plan to do so every time I go visit my family. The La Monarca chain here in our home of Los Angeles is an ever present standard of delicious and homemade baked goods right beside Cali-mex fare. It was the afternoon that was a little weird. There was an older-than-middle-aged man in the corner using his phone and drinking what seemed to be an endless cup of coffee. I could not figure out the art to opening the bathroom door, so the lady from behind the counter had to help me. And my tacos, though delicious, made a strange pairing with the absolutely sumptuous cookies baked fresh daily. Went in here today, parking was horrible. And then I walked in. No greeting nothing. There were 3 workers. One was busy chatting with a lady friend the whole time, the second was busy behind the counter cleaning and the third was attending to another lady. I've never been here so I didn't know where I was supposed to stand for service. But I saw one of the workers taking an order where the glass case was. So I got behind that lady. As she is taking her order, then another customer walked in and they greeted her. The worker finishes helping the first customer and the 3rd customer walks up to the counter. The worker started assisting her, which I felt was extremely rude, it wasn't like she didn't see me. So of course I say, "where is the line?" ( in Spanish). The worker points out where and then the 3rd customer says that I can go before her since I was there first. There was no acknowledgment or apology from the worker. I was ready to walk out because I was so upset by the lack of communication. But I had waited so long for parking and waiting inside the establishment, that I figured I might as well get what I came here for; tres leches. I also order a coffee. Also the workers English was not very good so I started to speak to her in Spanish (I am Mexican after all) but she wouldn't respond back to me in Spanish. It was so weird, I just saw her take the first customers order in Spanish and also help the third lady speaking in Spanish so why the refusal, she would switch between English and Spanish, why was she trying so hard to avoid it? So then I leave and head home. I hoping the cake will redeem my experience but unfortunately when I took my Tres leches out of the bag, it was placed improperly, and there was Tres leches milk, everywhere. I then take a bite of the cake and boy was it lacking in flavor. The cake was spongy almost dry and the milk was watery not thick and creamy like it should be. No flavor at all. I was so disappointed. The only saving grace was the coffee, it was very good coffee (only reason for the 2 stars), very strong just like I like it. Although the coffee is great, unfortunately, for me because of the overall bad experience I wouldn't come back here again. I will also add, I have worked in hospitality for over 20 years and I can tell you they need to retrain their workers. Horrible customer service. If I were a manager here, I would not allow this to ever happen. Your customers should always come before cleaning, chatting with a friend and treated with respect when they arrive. If anyone's looking for a good Tres leches please go to "Porto's" trust me. Save your hard earned money from this place. So disappointing. read more

After considering several options for Kings bread commonly known as "Rosca" in Spanish, I opted for obtaining one yesterday from La Monarca Bakery. Therefore, this review is mainly on the basis of having purchased a Rosca. However in the process, I also learned they have pre-packaged cookies, honey, sweet bread, cakes and beverages as can be appreciated from the menu with respective price range. Regardless of all available items on their menu, sweet bread being the star of the show would make one suppose the Rosca would follow suit. It turns out, the Rosca warrants this bakery 2- 3 stars. It is a sad depiction of a Rosca. The bread was not soft nor tasted fresh. My family is big on Roscas and all were disappointed at the appearance, texture and taste. Least to say, sadly I am not excited nor interested in trying any of their other menu items nor their other locations. I will boldly state that there are other better places to buy your Roscas including at El Super who will sell you a far superior Roscas for half the price and 5-fold the quality to those sold at La Monarca. read more

Everytime I order a concha or a cinnamon roll or any bread, it's instantly refunded, like they dont want to take the time to package it. I was on my way home after doing business in the valley, and I had the craving for some iced tea. Wanting to try a new place, I used my Yelp app to find it. I found this La Monarca location was closest to me, and conveniently located off the 101 freeway along Santa Monica Boulevard. I known this neighborhood is a bit rough at night, so I was surprised to find this coffee shop here. As I approached the place, I noticed that the building was renovated, and their well-lit parking lot sat on the side of the building. Parking was no problem to find, and I made the short walk to their front entrance. There, I noticed the clean and well-decorated interior. Much like their location on Sunset Blvd, they have tons of pastries to choose from. They also have a fair share of coffee and tea options. Of those, the hibiscus-mango tea struck my curiosity. So I ordered that, and asked to be let into the restroom while my drink was ready. The restroom has a keypad on it, but they won't tell you the code. You have to have an employee let you in. I can understand why, as this neighborhood is gentrifying but still has some rough aspects to it. The restroom was clean and well stocked. As I made my way back to the counter, they had my drink ready. The hibiscus-mango tea was amazing! It was one of the tastiest non-sugared teas that I've had. The tea was so good, that I opted to return the next day and have another one. And the second time around, I ordered some cookies as well. This coffee shop is a sign that the neighborhood is improving. I did not encounter any shady characters in this place, just friendly employees and patrons. I appreciate them being here, and I will definitely stop by again in the near future. read more

They have your standard selection of Mexican pastries, not very sweet, but Perfect with one of their sweeter drinks. Prices are fair and the space is beautiful, bright, new, modern and clean. La Monarca is located in a busy intersection on Western and Santa Monica Blvd. A lovely relief from the action of the city outside. La Monarcha has recently been remodeled and it has to be one of the favorite bakeries here in East Hollywood to West Hollywood. A short bus ride from the Hollywood Walk of Fame and you can experience one of Los Angeles' tasty conchitas and some of the most well priced birthday cakes. The Mexican Mocha Strawberry cake is a favorite along with the Tres Leches Latte. Im almost certain they will be selling challah bread soon. If you're in the neighborhood stop by, or take an uber over, or a lime bike and this trumps most of the bakeries in the area and truly is a star. read more

Guava, Horchata, and Tres Leches are my three favorites. The slices are just the right size too. Not too huge and definitely not too small.
