So we know 2020 sucks but it was nice to meet up with my cousin and nephew n his friends at this spot. They joined later, we 3 started with the brunch (not bottomless) but was good. Had the Bloody Mary to start with the burrito bowl. Service was friendly and at good pace and everyone wore the masks and servers were mindful and reminded people who'd forget on way to restrooms to cover up. I like this place. It was a surprise find as I was looking for cool spaces for brunch. Well, this isn't your ordinary brunch feel but they sure have a hot atmosphere. It's decorated, music's great, staff is knowledgeable about their menu, and it's quite a fun place to drink with your friends! I came with a couple friends to try out their brunch menu. I got the mollete, which to my surprise, I devoured faster than any Mexican food I've ever had. I left the lettuce salad though as I didn't want to waste my belly space since there was so much cheese and bread waiting to live in my belly :) the mollete was on a special bread topped with pinto beans, mozzarella cheese, queso fresco and guacamole. Whatever calories I count occasionally just went out the window because after the first bite, I decided it was cheat day. Hooray!! Friends ordered the huevos rancheros which they loved. They all ordered drinks (I did not) and said the drinks were good except the sangria was a bit more bitter than other spots. Margarita was spot on. Ironically, I've always gone "next door" to one of my favorite places, but when the "next door" location wasn't open for quarantine cravings, I ordered from La Palapa... The takeout was amazing. The fish tacos were generous and their various salsas were everything you could want from spicy to more mild. I was totally impressed and now I have a dilemma as this street has so much to offer!!! I've lived in the area for over a year and have just now discovered this awesome brunch spot. In New York, we are used to confined spaces, rushed service and no freebies. Well, La Palapa is a whole different story. They give you fruit, people! Free freakin' fruit before you much on your brunch! The décor is festive, the drinks (included in the brunch deal) are HUGE and the food is very delicious. I had the juevos rancheros - probably one of the best I've had in the city. The service was laid back and very friendly. There was no rushing you out. A stark contrast to that of say, oh, Café Orlin down the street. Came for brunch yesterday. We had 8 people and they charge $6 more per head for parties of 6+....why? Brunch menu was a joke - limited and barely any protein. Can a guy get his protein? They even charge $2 extra for extra table chips. Took 20 minutes to get our drinks as well. Pretty stingy if you ask me. Only thing that was good was our server. He was accommodating and kept our frozen margs full (strong but not the best margs). Will not be coming back here. We ended up waiting 20 mins to finally be seated. We ordered a round of drinks and a guacamole to start. The table had a variety of entrees, but I ordered the Chicken Enchilada Verde. It was decent, I liked the sauce and it was good sized, but had a lot of spice to it. The guacamole, on the other hand, was very good. Ambience is cool. It's dark and has a very bar/lounge vibe to it. It's very bustling and the music is flowing. The main reason for the low rating is the service. It's absolutely terrible. Aside from the fact that we waited a while to be seated, we then waited a while to order and to get our orders. They were not attentive, never refilled water, and rarely checked in on us. We were there at a later time as well, so it was not crowded to begin with. Overall, I was not a fan. The best part of the experience with the guac, but I wouldn't return just for that. The Bloody Mary was all spice and no tomato. I couldn't even keep it down. It tasted like water and cayenne pepper. The food took a while to come out, even though the restaurant was relatively empty. The Huevos Rancheros saddened me as well. I was expecting a colorful plate of eggs, tortillas, and veggies but what I got was a tortilla and an egg SWIMMING in green sauce. How do you even eat that? I was willing to give La Palapa the benefit of the doubt and guessed that maybe their form of Huevos Rancheros was the traditional form and I had been eating imposter Huevos Rancheros all these years. I was looking for a date night spot and ended up here. As far as ambiance goes La Palapa is 10/10 - its rustic, romantic and candlelit. I sat by the window but I could tell the rest of the restaurant spread pretty far back but still kept it's rustic feel. My boyfriend and I split a pitcher of margs which, to be honest, were very weak. However the guac was amazing and fresh. I loved the three salsas that were provided, especially the dark red smokey salsa. The enchiladas are filled with fresh, shredded chicken, which you can truly taste. I wasn't a fan of the mole (I think that's my personal taste and nothing against the restaurant) but the verde sauce was so flavorful and tasty. It's slightly spicy but very tasty! I'd definitely recommend this place, skip the margs though. read more

I believe this place is the place with the most welcoming and caring staff ever. I have never been to a place with so many gracious people. The food is delicious but the staff is outstanding. Even a server / busser with a broken arm went above and beyond. A server that was not in our section overheard me saying that it was warm and he cane to us to offer a different area of the restaurant. Amazing people we will recommend and be back back for sure. Came here with my family on a Friday afternoon for lunch/brunch. There were all of 4 other people in the restaurant. The service was TERRIBLE. The manager tried to take our order and couldn't keep track after the second person ordered. Thankfully the bartender showed up quickly and started actually WRITING our order down. Our margaritas had like 10 morsels of salt on the rim and literally no tequila. The huevos rancheros were redeeming. The corn on the cob appetizer seasoning didn't add taste to the corn. We have been to LaPalapa quite a number of times throughout the years and have always had a decent time. This past week we went with a few friends that live in the area and are frequent customers. We were a party of 4 and decided to go for drinks and appetizers. We were having a decent time until the bartender quite embarrassingly admitted that his manager, Agatha, ordered him to stop serving someone in our party. I would like to add that none of us were loud, nor dressed inappropriately nor drunk. I was quite astonished therefore I approached Agatha who seemed to be hiding in the back. She could not provide me with a solid reason as to why she decided to stop serving our friend. All she clearly stated was that she 'did not like the way his eyes looked'. I told her how disappointed I was and we all were, especially because she could have approached us if she had any concerns. She did not know if our friend had a visual disability. Perhaps she was having a bad day or decided to make that decision because the venue seemed to be getting a tad bit busier? If that was the case we would have easily moved to a table instead of the bar etc, however, we were never given the option nor had the opportunity to finish our food nor drinks. The waitress served the two tables that came after us and we sat until 340 with one glass of water while our drinks sat on the counter ice melting and the waitress repeatedly staring at it while serving drinks and cocktails to a mostly empty lunch service. Worst service in a very long time! Sat literally for 50 minutes. When i asked the waitress about drinks she said yes... Then proceeded to help other people thats when we walked out. This place hit the spot. the staff was very nice and though we arrived at late hours to the restaurant, they were still happy to sit us down and serve us. We quickly looked through the menu, I was hoping for nachos... but they don't actually serve nachos, so instead we were able to get a chorizo filled queso fundido and chips with guacamole and salsa. I think they could have included a bit more of the guacamole, or maybe just less of the chips. We then ordered a plate with beef strips, rice and beans. The meat was delicious... and the rice and beans were pretty good too. I took some left over home and it still tasted great. I will say, the real winner here for us was the $10 sangria pitcher, which pretty much filled up 6.5 glasses. The sangria wasn't amazing, but it was pretty decent. Come drunk or bring your own bottle, as you will never get a waitress or waiter to return to your table. They improv this ongoing skit about how they want more tips. It's hysterical! They ignore customers while complaining about not being tipped. This is a niche comedy club that catches you by surprise. If you don't have time to pre-game, bring a bottle. The waitstaff will never notice if you pull a 1.75 of Belvedere out of your Birkin as they turn their back to you and blather on and on about how they want more tips. It's entertaining to watch the customers who don't catch on that this is an amateur improv club and not a restaurant or bar where you can expect service. For an extra giggle, try to get the attention of a waiter assigned to another table to ignore. Great brunch option in one of my favorite parts of the city! I was craving something that had both chorizo AND guacamole. I asked for the waitress' recommendation between two dishes and based on that, ordered the HUEVOS TAPATÍOS. It totally hit the spot. Scrambled eggs with chorizo bits, side of black beans, and guac. It had everything I wanted in a Mexican brunch. My friend got poached eggs with green sauce on top with homefries -- also delicious. Really good Bloody Marys (coming from a non-Bloody Mary drinker), and a very interesting coffee brewed with natural sugar and orange peel. Chorizo taco - smoky, spicy, and just the right amount (enough filling to fill two shift tacos) Camarones taco - tasty shrimp and scallop mix, enhanced with the accompanying lime wedge Skirt steak - this was actually very good. The best part was the accompanying rice, which was cooked in broth and seasoned with mushrooms (and pork bits). This is such a cute restaurant! It is good for groups, good for a date even for a casual drink at the bar. I love the ambiance of the place. I truly felt like I was taken to the Caribbean. For a group of about 15 we were seated in the back where the greenhouse is in the restaurant. I personally like the touch of the greenhouse effect. It was like we had our own private section of the restaurant. I had the sweet plantains which were Amazing!, the steak quesadilla which was good but tiny and shared the CAMARONES al MOJO DE AJO shrimp sautéed with golden roasted garlic cloves red tomato rice, slow cooked black beans.
