I love coming here to share brunch or dinner with friends. The bean dip, chicken flautas, chicken tortilla soup (with big pieces of avocado), and chilaquiles are favorites. They don't serve coffee, but their house margaritas are strong and hit the spot. Sometimes they have sangria, which is the BEST! I wish they had it year round. Hello fellow yelpers. I'm giving La Playa a two star rating for " questionable ethical business practices. Buyer beware! This is the second time ordering from this establishment and had the same cashier with questionable ethics ring me up a more expensive item. I came both times upon opening which is 11:30 am. The establishment was clean and was near empty only with staff and employees. The first time I ordered, I ordered two burritos. The cashier never asked me if it was a regular or super so I assumed it would be a regular. The Restaurant cashier's usually give the option and ask the question to qualify it. So upon paying for the order it nearly was 40.00 dollars!!! Right????WTF!! So I asked about the price and the cashier nonchalantly said..."You ordered a super burrito ." Which I responded in the negative and said, No I did not! The transaction error on La Playa part had to have the manager come out to override the transaction in order to correct the order. Okay....lets let that one go.....So today, approximately 3 weeks later. I get the same unfriendly cashier who took my order. I brought my friend with me along. I let him order first. In SPANISH! A regular burrito. I heard him say it. I was present. My friend then requested to use the restroom. No eye contact just a hand gesture with a "over there." My friend leaves momentarily and I place my order from the menu! I can't make this up yelpers please look at photo attached. A beef burrito. Give the man a cigar! You'd think that would be the end right??? Nope ...wrong! He got mine right but mysteriously got my friend's order wrong....a super burrito! And just like magic the over priced burrito showed up on the transaction. This was the second time that this happened. So there I was questioning the over inflated price for 2 REGULAR BURRITOS. So after correcting the cashier and advising that my buddy ordered a regular one he got flustered and suddenly had an epiphany of recognizing me from the last time with an "Oh yeah! Now I remember you line! In which I responded, "yes you overcharged me last time!" The cashier vehemently argued with me that I was wrong and that my friend ordered a super burrito. I wish I could have taken a picture of his face when my friend returned and said he had ordered a regular burrito. You talk about some really unethical practices of trying to jack up the total! No apologies or humbled behavior. The cashier got clowned and ultimately had to correct the issue. To make matters worse he had to have the manager override the transaction AGAIN and had egg on his face. In which case solicited a sarcastic response from the manager with, a "Just a mistake BRO!" In which I responded, Yes... this is the second time. Don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill but I do want to put it out there....Please double and triple check your orders. The food at this place is always very tasty and consistent. From there traditional Mexican food to there wonderful Burgers. The workers are always very friendly and very happy to please you. My husband and I go there at least once a week if not twice a week. But we've had a few bad experiences there when the owner is there. She's been very rude to my husband when picking up to go orders and last night I saw that she was very rude to her employees. She should understand that if it wasn't for them working their butts off she wouldn't be open. The way she was talking to her employees made me loose my appetite. I gave them 4 stars because of her. I wasn't sure how many stars to give them. I wanted to give 5 stars for the food and for the employees. I wanted to give 0 stars for the owner. This was a very hard review. The couple of times I've tried La Playa's "Mexican" offerings (tostadas once and a chimichanga another time) they were just OK, the kind of food you expect in the two item combination plate with beans and rice kind of 87's vintage Mexican restaurants. Why you go to La Playa, in addition to them sporting one of the few full bars in the area, is because of the Gringo Menu tucked away on the last page of La Playa's menu. Their burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches are things of great beauty, served on crusty Raymond's sourdough rolls, with an expertly grilled patty or boneless chicken breast, and all the niceties like sliced tomato, shredded lettuce, and red onion. Substitute a heavily dressed but tasty salad if you're feeling virtuous; otherwise listen to the little devil sitting on your shoulder and go for the fries, a massive pile of thick golden beauties. Screw the Burger Bar, when in Pedro Point or Linda Mar Beach, this is where you get your burgers! read more

The one star is for the drinks. They're good, strong and decently priced. Since this is a restaurant, the lack of four more stars is because the food is bland and boring. I ordered chicken flautas and my friend a chicken quesadilla... I don't even taste salt.. not much different from eating American cheese and boiled chicken. When I had asked questions about the menu, the man at the front could only respond with "I don't know, I haven't tried it" I believe it... I believe that none of the cooks or employees have tried their own food because if they did they would do some major tweaking to the recipes. The good reviews are from regulars in a predominantly Caucasian town, probably what the menu is tailored to instead of trying to be authentic. I guess I don't entirely blame you, La Playa. read more

The gal at the front desk taking orders was rude and short to not only my party but I also watched her be rude the people in front of me. i don't usually give 1 star reviews, but La Playa deserves it. first off, the hostess/cashier woman, petite with dark hair probably in her 40's, was so incredibly rude i could not believe it. i walked up to the counter to order, and said 'hi! how's it going?' i did not receive a response. just a blank stare. in between ordering, she was yelling at her coworkers. and i mean yelling in a rude and aggressive way, blaming them for order issues etc in front of the whole restaurant. it was extremely uncomfortable to order during this. she seemed genuinely annoyed, like i was putting her in an uncomfortable position, simply for ordering food. i ordered fried fish tacos and a pacifico. *after* i pay and receive my receipt, she practically barks at me, 'did you order a pacifico??' and i replied that i did. **this was the worst part: she looks at me as if i've committed a crime by ordering a beer, and says "no, i'm gonna need to see your ID" and shakes her head a ton, as if i'm a kid trying to pull a fast one (i'm 23 and usually don't get carded). she was genuinely mad at me that i didn't remind her to check my ID when i was ordering lmao. i gladly show her my ID, and she doesn't say anything else so i walk away after another awkward silence. the tacos were overpriced and super bland (only tortilla, fish, bland mayo sauce! no pico, lettuce, etc). as i'm halfway done with my tacos, i realize i never got my beer. so i go inside and present my receipt and ask for it, as i paid a relative fortune for a singular bottle of beer. could've bought a pack at safeway for what i paid here. without saying anything to me (sorry? let me check on that for you?), she starts yelling at a male server saying "i TOLD you she ordered a beer. My first time here. I spent almost $50 on 2 meals and 1 margarita. The food lacked flavor and everything tasted like it was boiled in plain water. The margarita was small but it was good, it was the only highlight of this experience. I wish I would have dined at the Taco Bell Cantina within walking distance instead. It would have saved me money and the food is much better there. I won't be coming here again for food. The couple before me ordered drinks from the bar and left. I give this two stars because the owners suck and are greedy price gougers. $9 for one 12oz bottle of Pacifico beer. $8.75 for a 16oz pint of 805 which is not completely unreasonable but how in the heck is 12oz bottle of Pacifico more money than a pint of "craft" beer? A 12 pack of Pacifico at Safeway is $11.99. I'm ok with places charging a little more for certain items for certain reasons like being in a touristy area but there's a limit to that. Date #3 with Guy #2 We decided to meet in Linda Mar for our lunch date today. The weather was a bit chilly, but it was nice to spend some time in the Pacifica sun and I enjoy driving along the Coast Highway. La Playa was empty... no not the beach, the restaurant was empty -- no costumers in sight. I found it weird that there were tables right by the entrance along with an "out of order" pinball machine and a tall gumball machine. The place is decorated with plastic banners everywhere -- Corona ones by the bar along with one dollar bills. It's a pretty big place -- good venue for a party (an alternative to Chevy's, maybe). The left wall has a huge old advertisement for milk (a blond woman in a bikini lying on her stomach at the beach holding a tall glass of milk and the type says: "Every body needs milk," which I found a bit strange. Generous portion of fresh/salted chips and salsa which went well with the regular chicken burrito I ordered. I loved that the burrito was hot, not luke-warm, hot. It was wrapped to perfection and the ingredients tasted fresh and well seasoned. My burrito did not lack anything -- there was chicken in every bite. I would like to try some margaritas the next time I visit... hopefully that'll be really soon :-)! read more

Nachos! If you want nachos, don't get them here. Mine were a huge soggy disappointment! For $12.95 I received an order of nachos that had watery refried beans on the bottom, lots of shredded chicken then topped with a TON of American goopy cheese!!! The nacho chips were all limp and I needed a fork to pick up anything. There were no jalapeños or olives, just chicken, cheese, beans and nachos. They should have at least added a few extra nachos on top to be able to pick up your cheese and meat. I am not sure why they charged so much.
