Our family has been going here forever. Rita the owner and cook used to be a cook for La Fonda in Campbell in the 70's and 80's. That restaurant closed then they reopened in the Redwood Plaza center in Almaden. In the early 90's Rita bought the restaurant and named it La Playita. The food is always great . Well the decoration is great but so much clean. I order a banana chimichanga with ice cream and caramel sauce . My order did not have ace cream nor caramel. When I go to the ask, the person cooking said there is no ice cream. Oh well I notice that. Then with attitude said I could return it and get my money back. I took it back but for sure I am coming here no more. The person the cooks is the one that make my plate and she knew there was no ice cream or caramel sauce, then why make the order and charge over 8 dollars for a tortilla with a banana. This little mom and pop Mexican restaurant is hidden in a corner of a parking lot in Almaden. The interior is cute with a lot of Mexican statuettes. I judge the authenticity of a Mexican restaurant first by whether the chips and salsa are original. Their salsa and chips seem homemade. The salsa is good, but I like it to be a little spicier. Their soups are made daily and are flavorful. The service is friendly, and prompt. Today, I opted for breakfast, which was huevos rancheros, which was simply cooked, but delicious. The chips tasted of old oil, something the watery salsa couldn't hide. The tiny amount of carnitas in my $18 burrito tasted soft and flavorless. The tomatillo sauce was gelatinous. The cafeteria style iceberg salad was fine but tiny. Three forkfuls of rice. And it wasn't cheap. The only thing they got right was service, a/c, atmosphere, and the crisp Diet Pepsi. Very cute little place hidden in the back of a neighborhood mall at the corner of Redmond and Meridian. Super clean inside with ample seating. Very friendly staff. Food came out of the kitchen fast and accurate to order. We ordered a variety of meals to please a party of 5 and everything was delicious! Save room for dessert because if they have bananas you gotta try the banana chimichanga with ice cream. I'm glad I snapped a picture before it was devoured! We decided to try La Playita because people on Nextdoor and in the neighborhood gave it good reviews. Boy, were we disappointed. The first time we went, there was a cat roaming outside. While we noticed that and weren't impressed by the cleanliness, we still decided to give it a shot based on the hype. It struck out. Even so, we thought maybe it was just an off day and decided to give it another chance, especially since we had a "buy one entrée, get one free" coupon. Unfortunately, the second visit was worse than the first. The food quality was extremely poor and far from authentic. The chips and salsa were the only semi-decent part, but even those lacked real flavor. We ordered three different dishes, and all of them were so bad that none of us even finished them. It honestly felt like a waste of money, even with the coupon. There's a lot of local hype about this place, but if you know and appreciate good Mexican food, this spot will be a massive letdown. I ordered a carnitas enchilada and my boyfriend had a carnitas tamale. The sauce on both was fabulous! Best I've ever had! It's not your typical enchilada/tamale sauce in either looks or taste, but it's to die for. I had hoped to get a watermelon pineapple juice combo from their Agua Fresca selection, but pineapple wasn't available. After tasting their wonderful enchilada/tamale sauce, I didn't care anymore! Our server, who I think is the owner, was very friendly and helpful. He went out of his way to make sure we were happy. The atmosphere is really nice, with a garden-like patio for outdoor dining. The interior has lots of nice artwork and decorations. We were there for an early lunch on a Monday and there were two other tables occupied when we arrived. Prices are very reasonable and there's plenty of parking. We absolutely will be returning here very soon. I wish we had tried this restaurant earlier! read more

La Playita offers ordinary, affordable Mexican food. I went there with three others and we all ordered something different and we were all pleased. Perhaps the chile relleno could have had less breading, but it was tasty. the tacos are particularly ample. I'm not sure, but I do think they cook with manteca (lard). If this is an issue for you, ask before ordering, especially the beans. The table is without table cloths and the napkins are paper. Chips and salsa are on the house and the salsa is very piquant and delicious. They do a great job with take-out. The baby burritos are much appreciated by families with small children. Service is relaxed and friendly. The space is very interesting. It"s filled with knick-knacks, many from Mexico. I wondered about cleanliness with so much clutter, but as I looked closely I found everything to be clean.The walls are filled with pictures. Some hang crookedly which made me a little nuts. They could not be straightened because the nails were off-center. grrrr. The outdoor patio is charming and tucked-in away from the parking lot, so there is a garden effect. read more

I love the enchiladas Sonora's with extra sauce. I have been coming here with my family since I was young and am happy they are still around. With how expensive life is in the area so many mom/pop places have closed down but La Playita has kept on going. The food is always good. Honesty, service is slow bc it's very minimally staffed but I believe Its bc of the economy so I, along with all of their regular patrons patiently wait. La Playita was a neighborhood nook that I always knew of, but didn't get the pleasure of trying before this month. La Playita has a very laid back atmosphere, with a colorfully decorated interior and exterior lined with potted plants of all sorts. It seems like a place people would wind up at after a stroll in the neighborhood, although theres plenty of parking in the plaza lot. Now I can't remember for the life of me what the name of my dish was, but if I had to guess it would be the carnitas. Regardless, it was amazing, and plenty of food to eat. We sat in the little outdoor area which is always best with our group of friends! My girlfriends got the soup which they love. I got a chili relleno and chicken enchilada, it came with rice and beans as well as a choice of soup or salad. My friend said the sangria is delicious, she always gets it there. The littles had quessadillas and little baby burritos. The beauty of the outdoor area is the smokers can be close enough to socialize on and off without getting smoke around those who don't want to be in it. My two star rating is mostly based on the plate portion and the main reason I would not return to this restaurant. I had a 3 combo plate with two enchiladas and a taco. I thought the taco would be something of a unique creation but it was no more special than a Taco Bell taco hard shell and small. Our family enjoys having the option, on a nice cool summer day, to dine outdoors on the shaded patio, or indoors while taking in the wall decor and ambiance. I'm a sucker for a good enchilada, and Dave's Enchilada is a winner! Their fresh guacamole paired with chips are dynamite and lead into anymeal appropriately. Don't sleep on their breakfast burritos either as we have had those catered for work events in mass quantities and they are a hit. Chorizo & egg being my favorite.
