Avocado toast with added ahi tuna
Michelle E.

I've been to La Popular several times for happy hour but never reviewed until now. Speaking of, the happy hour isn't bad, but it's not one of my first choices for. Anyway.... Today we went for brunch, our first time. Awhile back the restaurant mailed BOGO free brunch cards to households in the area, and since this was the 2nd to last weekend to use, we went. Came in a little after 11, not very busy (The Vineyards tend to get very busy later in the day on weekends) I order a Spicy Watermelon Passion Fruit Agua Fresca - it was good, but the Watermelon was so overwhelming it was hard to taste the passionfruit. My mom had the breakfast tacos (not pictured) which she liked a lot, I had the avocado toast and added ahi tuna. The toast may look small at first, but was very rich and filling. I will say I was surprised to see the tuna in lox-like strips, but maybe that's because I'm used to ahi tuna either seared or in chunks poke style. All in all, a very nice experience. I think i wanna go back and try the pancakes.

Loved the happy hour here, where you can get good food and drinks for a good price! I came by to check out their happy hour Friday afternoon around 4 pm and it wasn't too crowded. Happy hour is offered daily 3-6 pm and 9 pm to close and includes both food and drink specials. They also offer all day specials on Tuesday for Taco Tuesday. I had the LP margarita for $9 off the happy hour menu. It was a pretty good margarita! We started with their complimentary salsa. I was very happy to find that it wasn't spicy but still very flavorful. I'm a picky eater and usually don't like restaurant salsas, but this was right up my alley. We then shared an order of their guacamole ($8.25 hh), cachetada ($6.25 hh), and a couple of tacos ($4.25 each). The guac was amazing as well, made with ripe avocados and just the right amount of salt and flavor. It comes with a giant plate of chips which were still warm from the fryer. I just wish there was more of it! For the tacos, I tried the ribeye, the gochujang carnitas (monthly special), and the regular carnitas. The regular carnitas was by far my favorite. The gochujang was okay but I personally found it too sweet, and the ribeye was a bit bland. I didn't try the cachetada as it was way too cheesy for my personal tastes, but I would recommend getting this if you like cheesy foods. My friend said it was like eating cheese straight up.

Went here on Sunday which happened to be the World Cup final. Started with the chicken empanadas appetizer not my favorite, then came the chips with salsa amazing chips were nice and crunchy. We also got the Ceviche 10/10 the quesabirria was good too a bit too cheesy 7/10 the ambience was great since it was the soccer final everyone was cheering! I will be back to try the tacos although service wasn't great I will give them another try.

45 min wait to be seated. 1 hr wait for food. Food portions are wayyyyyyy too small for the price. We ordered the tacos with rice and beans. The fish tacos were cold. The Rib Eye tacos with cheese were very delicious, it was a shame they were so small. I would say order a few things. The place was packed! The server was friendly, the place was very dark!

Went in for happy hour Audrey was our server She was very nice and polite Loved the interior! one of the prettiest restaurants in the valley Happy hour was kind disappointing I got the order of guacamole which is 8-9 dollars Each taco is around 4 dollars Free chips and salsa with meal. Food was good my only complaint is on the guacamole way too expensive for what it is. At least have it made tableside if you're charging close to 10 dollars for about 4oz of guacamole. Lowkey if you got three chicken tacos it would have the same amount of guac. Plus they already give you chips!

Food and drinks are good. The place is cute inside. But the prices are high for the type and amount of food. Probably wouldn't go back on my own.

My experience at La Popular was simply okay. The ambiance is definitely gorgeous. The restaurant is well decorated. Where I fear they lost points was speed of service and in part, the food. We were seated for an entire inning of baseball on the TV before we were even greeted, let alone given waters. Roughly 10 minutes? I do want to say, our server was an angel. He was very helpful, patient, and nice. After putting in our orders for drinks, apps, and entrees all at once, it was interesting that our drinks came out much later than our appetizers. I had ordered the Maui mahi tacos. The tortillas of 2/3 of my tacos were basically mush. I ate one taco like a taco, and the other two I ditched the tortilla and made a little salad I guess. It's not necessarily that I had a bad experience, the flavors of the guacamole, steak chicharron, and my mahi mahi were definitely good, but other than that, it just wasn't anything to write home about.

Lots of parking in Porter Ranch. I love the churro dessert. Drinks and food were good.

Birria Burrito Plate

Stopped in here before going to the movies. I was excited to try La Popular due to the positive reviews on Yelp. Upon being seated, we were almost immediately greeted by our server Maria, who was very friendly and took our drink orders right away. I ordered the birria burrito which states on the menu right above that all plates come with rice and beans, so I assumed this was included in that category. I received my burrito with no rice and beans. I asked our server and she stated that the burrito does not come with rice and beans. She said she could bring a side of each anyway to which I replied, "that's okay." I thought it was pretty strange that a $19+ burrito did not include rice and beans but I accepted the fact. Maria ended up bringing a side of rice and beans anyway at no charge, which I thought was very nice until after when I looked up the menu and I was right in thinking that I did read that it came with those sides. The menu does in fact state that all plates come with rice and beans. Anyway, not a huge deal but the food is pretty pricey and I wish I could say that I would come back to eat here, but I felt it was very mediocre for the price. The burrito was just okay. Nothing too flavorful or memorable. Salsas were just okay too. The restaurant does have a nice ambiance for grabbing drinks. I just wish the food was a little better because I frequent the AMC next door weekly and I love Mexican food. Unfortunately, they missed the mark on the food quality for the prices they offer. The food isn't disgusting or anything, just nothing worth going back for. Also, toward the end of our dinner, we felt like we were somewhat forgotten about, as we didn't see our server for a while and we wanted to get our check and leave as we had a movie to see.

We came here during the week for happy hour on a taco Tuesday, the prices were food options for happy hour were great. My sister comes here pretty often and have been telling us how good it is and it definitely lived up to the hype. The restaurant has a nice bar area in the middle of the restaurant and a covered outside patio area. La Popular is located at the Vineyards at Porter Ranch where all the other dine in restaurants are. There's a large parking lot here so there's lot of parking, but since this area is pretty busy you might have a little bit of a walk to get here.

Shrimp and Steak Fajitas

La Popular offers a nice vibe in a dimly lit restaurant with modern decor and great bites. I was a big fan of the Shrimp Ceviche with Plaintain Chips and the Shrimp and Steak Fajitas. Both hearty, with fresh flavors, and perfect for sharing. Prices are decent for the portion and tastiness of the dishes. Great date spot, though they are also set up well for larger groups and family/friend outings. We've often walked in without a reservation and sat down without a wait. Service is warm and efficient. I have not had a bad experience here. Free parking in the plaza, which gets crowded often.

Really good food! As a little bit more upscale Mexican restaurant I would say it's good for what you expect. Portion sizes might be small but it's good! Service is good. Order the Valentine's Day 3 course meal a was good. Carne asada medium rare is the way to go! It's bit pricey if you are looking for a nice big amount of food. It is more for the experience and ambiance. The drinks hit the spot. With the Margarita flight

Spotless, immaculate, pristine everywhere you look, even on after a busy weekend.

Los Angeles county sprawls in every direction and so is blessed with dozens and dozens of beautiful, charming neighborhoods. One of these is Porter Ranch. I had not been there in a decade but decided to give a trendy restaurant, La Popular, a try this weekend. When we drove through the area, I was immediately struck by how lovely it is and the fact that it has developed into a major town. There is smart building evident everywhere. All the malls are well designed and pretty, and loaded with great places to eat and shop, some standards like Whole Foods and Mendocino Farms, others unique like La Popular. La Popular is located in The Vineyards, a terrific outdoor mall that has been thoughtfully laid out and landscaped. The parking is ample and there are places to relax outside with small playgrounds for the kids. There is even a water course. LP is huge and impressive as you approach and once inside, well, it is downright glamorous. The lighting is layered and subdued with elegant bespoke fixtures. There is a variety of seating from leathery banquettes to high top tables to a long and glittering bar. A patio outside provides shaded dining as well. The menu is wonderful and, as a vegetarian, I had to study it carefully as there were quite a number of items that I wanted to try. You can see the ones that made the cut, lol, in my photographs. Everything was delicious. Our server, Josie, was cheerful and efficient. Our dishes came out quickly and were piping hot. The tables are substantial solid wood, and the thick napkins and heavy flatware are tinted dark to match the overall decor. The effect is of an exclusive but airy club with niches for an intimate experience. All the building materials are high quality. There was an appealing mix of '80s/'90s music at just the right volume playing in the background, some of it World Beat. It is hard to think of something to change but one thing I would like to suggest to the owners is to offer beans that do not have lard. I love Mexican beans but all of them on this menu were made with animal fat -- not healthy or tasty. It can easily be substituted with vegetable oil. I had to do without beans and that was a major drawback for me. Other than that, this is a wonderful place for an almost perfect meal and we want to come back soon.

We both liked our drinks. For food, we shared the following from the happy hour menu: Green goddess hummus ($8 hh) - pretty good, but I wish there was more pita to go with the hummus! Crispy chicken sliders ($11 hh) - ginormous chicken sliders! Would highly recommend! Meatball sliders ($11) - good but on the smaller side, especially when placed side by side with the chicken sliders lol Blackened salmon tacos ($11 hh) - also good, though I found the salmon a bit bland Presentation for the drinks and all the dishes was beautifully done. The energy was electric, as there was a Mexico soccer game on for the World Cup. We ordered some asada fries and birria tacos, and both were super tasty. The asada fries in particular were a generous portion and you felt like you got your money's worth (a challenge in this economy). The vibe inside is very chill and the lights are down low. I loved the trees inside and always appreciate the color the painted skulls add to the space. A couple small things...first, we didn't get the food for a long while after we ordered. Probably around 35 minutes, and happy hour finished in the in-between, so it was too late to add to our order if we had wanted to. Second, I noticed that sometimes the silverware is not 100% clean (this has happened to me at 2 locations), so i make sure to check that I'm not getting anything dirty and mention it to the servers. They always promptly replace it, but it'd be nice if that was not happening in general. Anyway...love the deals here, the flavors are on point, and the atmosphere is fun. What more could you want?

The service could use a little work. When we go for Happy Hour, we always seem to have to flag our waiter down or ask another if they can get them. I guess that they think once we have ordered food that we won't be ordering more drinks? The one area that could use some attention is the women's restroom. During my last three visits, the toilet seat in one of the stalls has been loose and shifts around when you sit down. On my most recent visit, I also noticed that the stall walls were quite dirty. These are relatively small maintenance issues, but addressing them would definitely improve the overall guest experience. Overall, Kalaveras is a fun spot with good food, a lively atmosphere, and plenty of space for groups. I'll continue meeting friends here and hope to see a little more attention given to restroom maintenance in the future.

Asked for a recommendation for the meat and was told their al pastor is really good, so I went with that. I liked that they call you as they're making your burrito, so you can customize it further (which kind of salsa, onions and cilantro, do you want it cut in half, etc.). As a picky eater, I really appreciated that. We all got burritos, and one friend paid an extra 3 bucks to make it wet. Chips come on the side, and you can help yourself to salsa at their fresh salsa bar. This is the first taqueria I can remember that has a mild tomato salsa without raw onion and very little cilantro. I was excited to see that finally there's a salsa I can eat. My Alex burrito was one of the best burritos I've had imo. The proportion of meat to beans to rice was perfect and the rice tasted great. The al pastor was amazing: super flavorful and smoky. I usually feel like most burritos taste about the same to me, but I definitely found myself enjoying this one more than usual, which says a lot. Also, they're generously sized here. I wasn't able to finish mine despite my best efforts and packed the last quarter to bring home for dinner. I'd like to end my review by mentioning how polite and friendly everyone was, from the guy taking our order to the guy making the food. I was really impressed by this as well, since taquerias usually aren't exactly known for their service. I can't wait to come back!
