This was our first time at La Popular. We had our eye on it for a while and finally found the time and occasion to go. I'll start with the Ambiance. The decor is great in doors and out the music however is way too loud. If you sit indoors forget about having a normal conversation with your party with yelling across the table. We chose to sit in the patio and it was ok, a little warm due to the weather. The table next to us was dirty, food all over the table I'm assuming from the last guest. The table stayed dirty practically our whole Time we were there so that made it very unpleasant. The service was mediocre. Our server was nice that's it. The food at least my plate was a complete disappointment. I had the chicken tinga tacos which was served with rice and beans. The tacos (tortilla) were cold and the chicken tinga had zero flavor. They seemed to have more guacamole in it cause that's all I could taste. The rice was cold old and clumpy. My entire plate presentation was horrible. I had an agua fresca for almost $7 a glass that I'm assuming had no refills cause it never got refilled and I was never asked if I wanted another one. The servers were more into their personal conversations than actually working. Complete disappointment. My husband had the Chicken Mole. His food presentation was much better than mine and he did say the mole was very good so it wasn't all a complete loss. Overall I'm going to say if you want nice ambiance then this is a good spot. The service needs major improvement and they need to stop serving old rice and improve the flavor in the food. This to me was mediocre Mexican food for a high price. We finally tried this place by ordering 4 tacos to go. Good quality but hilariously funny mini size!! I thought maybe we ordered from the kids menu!!! But no. It was actual regular tacos. It was comical. When we opened the box and saw the size started laughing! Without exaggeration, each taco looked liked around two inches In diameter. ! On the top of that it costs $5 per taco!!! Went to the movies on Cinco de mayo, had no idea this was over here but my friend suggested it. The place had a nice buzz for 10pm on a Sunday but wasn't packed. We started with the Las Perlas and the Forbidden Paradise Mule and we really liked the Las Perlas. The Forbidden Paradise Mule was good as well, similar passion fruit flavor but with ginger beer added. I enjoyed the guacamole and salsa. Our salsa tray never came out but we ordered a lot anyway so didn't miss it. I will have to give the other salsa a try though. The creamy chipotle prawn tacos were pretty good, although a little messy. Campechano tacos were okay, kind of a basic street taco. Young people may not mind mediocre food and service, if the atmosphere is dramatic, but we weren't impressed. Plus, it's in a mall. No matter how art directed the interior is, it's still a restaurant in a mall, in Porter Ranch north the 118 freeway at that. Not exactly a center of hipness or a magnet for interesting crowds. Finally got around to trying this place out. So happy we did! The food was delightful... as were the cocktails. But my absolute favorite thing about this restaurant is the people. We are out for date night in God knows how long. The hostess was lovely and sat us at a cozy little table which we appreciated so much. Our server, Mario, was amazing. The ribeye tacos are delicious! Service can be hit or miss but the last two occasions I was here my bill was incorrect. First time, I had extra drink charges. Second time, no happy hour pricing was applied and it was a Tuesday (all day happy hour). It's kind of disappointing to have to get your bill corrected on two consecutive visits. What an ABSOLUTE LET DOWN. Came here today for my birthday and wow was it disappointing and dissatisfying. My husband got reservations for us at 7:30. We arrived a little early and were seated near the bar. The ambiance was nice but literally sounded like a rave and it was ridiculously loud. We waited, and waited, and finally 20 minutes later, someone came over to talk to us. I placed my order for the piña and mango agua fresca and added tequila to it. My husband got a coke, and we decided to place the order for food because it became very clear that if we didn't, we would be waiting another 20 min to order. Now, I'm Mexican and I was looking forward to a nice modern high end take on Mexican food. I was utterly disappointed in every aspect. When I got my drink it was like water. I did NOT taste any pineapple or mango, it literally tasted like water with tequila. Aguas frescas are known for their strong vibrant flavors. If you go to any decent mom and pop local Mexican shop, and you order a piña agua fresca YOU WILL TASTE PINEAPPLE. If you order mango you will taste mango and sometimes they even have the sliced fruit in it. This was a travesty for them to call "agua fresca". My husband insisted I tell them I didn't like it, but there was no way to do that as we never saw our server again. We then got our food and the disappointment continued. I ordered the quesabirra tacos and my husband had the "rib eye" tacos. Since it was so loud, it was hard to hear our server when she asked if we wanted the tacos something style she then explained it had cheese so we both said yes. Turns out it was basically crispy cheese and it took the entire allure of queso tacos away. Also it was a salt bomb. The rib eye tacos were bland. It was hilarious at this point, to be charging that much money for something so mediocre. We begrudgingly ate our food, and then waited, and waited, 25 minutes for someone to come by to ask if we wanted desert. I asked for churros as it was my birthday. Mind you we didn't have a server it was just random people passing by and if they made eye contact they would ask if we needed something. We waited another 25 minutes and finally I flagged the guy down to tell him to cancel it as we had a movie to go to. He brings our check and leaves again. DESPITE me telling him we were in a rush to get to our movie. We were about to get up to see if we could pay in the front when someone saw us looking around and asked if we had a question. I told him we needed to pay, and the server just dropped it and left. He said they wait for us to take our card out and then they process it. My husband handed him the card and we finally left. We were NOT able to watch our movie bc we were 20 min late due to waiting around for someone to give us our check. Mind you every other table around us, got their check and had left but for some reason they all kept passing by and didn't even offer a glass of water. The check was over $60! For food you can get at a low quality place like Los toros? Thanks but no thanks. It can look all trendy and modern but that doesn't make the food or the service good. I really wanted to love this place my husband and I waited and watched for the opening date, and to experience this was painful. I was a regular customer who traveled from Ventura County, and today I invited my friend to this place. We arrived around 4:30 pm. We sat down at the bar, which was dirty, and at that moment a waitress cleaned the area so we could sit down. There were two bartenders and a manager. We sat there for at least 15 minutes and were never noticed, completely ignored by the staff. The place was empty, with only one couple at the bar. After not being served, we decided to go to the restaurant next door. It was totally embarrassing to take my friend to a place we will never return to and do not recommend.One-star rating is a lot. read more

Honestly, this was a tough one to write because at first we had a TERRIBLE start to our first experience here. We made a reservation for 9:15, got there and checked in at 9:10. We were told about 10 mins. Ok that's fine. We went to the bar and ordered drinks while we waited. About 20-25 mins go by and we ask the hostess again, she said sorry about 10 more minutes. Ok back to the bar ordered more drinks then about 35-40 mins goes by, past our reservation time and were told, the table they were going to sit us at hasn't left yet and still have time on their 2 hour mark. So we give them the benefit of the doubt when they say they'll hurry it up. An hour proceeds to go by and we ask again, and ask why would you book a reservation for a specific table if you know you sat another table that had 2 full hours and they overlapped?! Then we asked another hostess to speak to the manager and she said "no we can't, and I'm too tired to deal with this, he's too busy. No" I said "you have got to be kidding me, we are paying customers, get me your manager" after going back and forth for about 2-3 times, she finally got the manager. The manager proceeded to agree that was unacceptable behavior and he got us seated right away which was very professional and very much appreciated. I believe his name was Bradley. Our server, Josie, was spectacular. I am sure she was given a heads up about how upset we were but at least she ensured to be overly nice and really make sure we were taken care of. Luckily the food and drinks were good. But it is definitely the kind of place that is a bit over hyped on Instagram. Nothing too exciting but it was good. The deserts were delicious. Food was good but not great. Drinks were delicious. I suggest getting the guacamole with chiccarones and rib eye. The New York steak dish was sooo good. Shrimp fajitas were better than the steak. Churros with ice cream and tres leches were amazing. One of us at the table thought the Flan was the best! Restaurant is smaller then imagined but cute with music gives a typical instagram hyped LA restaurant vibe most are looking for when they chose these types of places. I wish we had a great experience from the start or else I would've left 4 stars, but sadly the poor service at the first hour of waiting and the host who was "too tired" to cared showed their workers may be over worked, not sure but why are you working if you're too tired to care about paying customers who have been waiting an hour just to sit - WITH A reservation. Props to Bradley and Josie for making sure our experience was not one star like it started, we appreciate you and your professionalism. Came here for lunch with a few of friends. It was absolutely amazing. We got the nachos and a side of guacamole and the salsa and chips to start. The salsa and chips comes with four different types of salsa and chips. The guacamole is fresh made to order and you can choose your spice level. We also got the enchiladas and the alpha tacos. They were absolutely fantastic. I recommend you get them both. If you want to feel like you are on vacation but you want to stay local you should come to this restaurant and check it out. Upon arriving, it seems like this restaurant gets extremely busy! Luckily, you are able to make a reservation on their website - which is what I did. My group arrived about 5 minutes early to check in and we were seated fairly quickly. It is very loud inside but we sat outside at the fire place, so it wasn't a problem for us. To start we got the ceviche to share. It was very good! Acid and salty, but just the right amount. they gave a side of mini tostadas to go with it as well. For my entree, I got the enchilada blancas with pulled chicken and it was enough to fill me up. The flavors of the dish meshed well together. I wasn't able to try any of their drinks for my first visit, but I will be back one day to give those a try. Preface: This is my 3rd review. I don't try any new restaurant without checking out yelp. So here is our latest experience. We came on a Monday night. The hostesses are not mindful of the front door staying open. And on a cold day/night, the air makes the experience very chilly. Ive gotten up on several visits to close the door myself. Service: the service was so poor. I thought we were getting punk'd. It took approximately 35 minutes before the waiter took our order. Albeit 2 of our guests didn't arrive. And so our 6 person table only had 4 of us sitting there. But we knew they weren't coming. Our waiter didn't bother asking if we were expecting anyone else. My gf's margarita tasted like juice. When we brought up the issue, our waiter argued that they use a measure to add the tequila. Like as if this couldn't possibly be the case that the drink was juiced down. We never got refills on water. Never came back to see if we needed anything. Anything we needed, we had to flag the hostess. Then when we put in a request: water, chips, take our order, the bill, get the bill back to sign, it took an unusual long amount of time. Then the kicker. Chairs were stacked on the tables! There were still several guests seated in the booths and the table behind us. I asked the waiter what time they closed. Thinking maybe we overstayed our welcome. It was 1010. Come to find out closing is at 11. Nevertheless, tables shouldn't be stacked while guests are eating at a nicer establishment. Or any, for that matter. When I brought it up, our waiter proceeded to explain that they try to close off sections and concentrate guests in one area. Ok, seating incoming guests in one area makes sense. But why start packing it up while there are still patrons dining? THEN the waiter started sweeping all around the seated guests! It was an odd experience this evening. We don't just come for the food, which is really tasty. We also come for the ambiance which was lacking this night. read more

It's date night and no kids, we decided to treat ourselves to a nice dinner and drinks. We normally go to Gus BBQ or Finneys. Well, that night we decide to go out of our comfort and try a new restaurant, I normally dress comfortable as Gus and Finneys don't require dressing up. I wore my Snoopy Tshirt with my Polo Ralph Lauren jeans and my booties. (I should have told them the prices of my jeans lol) Anyways, maybe the snoopy shirt gave the girls the impression that we couldn't afford dinner? Wasn't the greatest greet, actually there was not greet at all compared to others who came in all dressed up. My hubby said don't let them ruin our dinner maybe the waiter will be different, well let's just we were not disappointed! He was amazing! He even recommended a few drinks and dishes. We pretty much let him order for us lol By the end of the night, we were beyond satisfied with his service and the food was exceptional. I didn't want to leave a big tip because I know they have to split it with them but he deserved it, I gave him almost a 40% tip. Maybe the girls should concentrate on being kind to the people who are not all dressed up because you shouldn't judge someone how they are dressed!
