It was 90*+ out and a chilled soup was so refreshing and a perfect first course. Main: Spaghetti. Not exaggerating the best spaghetti I've ever had. I normally wouldn't order spaghetti but the crab was speaking to me and I'm so glad I did. A+. Dessert: Paris Brest. A nice sweet treat to end the meal. This was generally true but the only dish that had the "wow" factor of Marea was the veal ravioli. I had dinner with my husband at Ai Fiori for our anniversary. We walked in to the hotel lobby and appreciated the beautiful interior and floral decorations by the stairs leading up to the restaurant. We made reservations and were seated right away. Our server was so kind and attentive. We started off with the cocktails: I got the royal blush and a classic, dirty martini for my hubby. The royal blush was a bit too sweet for my taste so I opted out for a different drink for my second round. For appetizers, we shared the foie gras and dozen oysters! The oysters were super fresh and the foie gras was rich and creamy, literally melting in my mouth! For pastas, my husband got the blue crab spaghetti and I ordered the squid ink pasta- both absolutely delicious! The swordfish dish was recommended to me by our server and my husband ordered got the duck. The presentation was lovely and both dishes were very good. To end the night, we shared the chocolate mousse and tiramu for dessert. My husband said, "that was one of the best tiramisu I've ever had!" When we entered Ai Fiori, the room immediately gave that classic Italian feel but elevated, with an upscale, white-tablecloth atmosphere that matched the level of service. The food was very good and the drinks were nice and strong, especially the White Lotus cocktail, which really hit the spot. I especially enjoyed the black squid ink pasta with mixed seafood, which was a standout dish. Our server was gracious and helpful, guided us through the menu, and made it easy for us to flex between the Restaurant Week offerings and the à la carte options, which I really appreciated. Service was timely and attentive overall. My only drawback was that, since it was close to closing time on a Sunday night, my protein course came out before I had finished my pasta, so I had to let it sit while I finished that dish before moving on. The lemon pie-style dessert we had at the end was excellent and a lovely finish to the meal. Finally got around to Ai Fiori, years after trying and enjoying Marea. Caught the last day of Restaurant Week, great value for this spot. As expected the portions for each course were pretty small for the RW menu. Overall most dishes weren't particularly memorable - the halibut was solid and the semifreddo dessert was quite surprisingly good. They seated us 20 min past our reservation time without much explanation, and it was 8:30pm on a Thursday and the restaurant wasn't full whatsoever. Our server (a Japanese woman, can't recall her name) was very nice though. Overall, Ai Fiori is still very much still a Midtown expense account type spot, one that's a bit past its prime but a nice enough place for dinner. read more

Came here for RW as it was recommended by a friend who have dine here before with their regular menu and she said it was really good. The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor of a hotel. You can of course take the elevator but we opted to walk up their spiraling staircase with a teardrop chandelier to enter. The hostess greeted us and reconfirm our friend's egg allergy. Personally, I like she did that to reassure our friend that her allergy is taken seriously. We sat on a round table which was great because it gave us plenty of space to enjoy the beautiful surrounding, the decor and flower accent. Our waiter was also wonderful. He was attentive, friendly, yet very professional. For starter, I had their beef tartar. I thought the taste was excellent. I could taste a hint of coriander seasoning and it was spicy, which I like. For entree I had their braised rib. It was portion nicely and left me feeling very satisfied. As for dessert, I had their chocolate cake topped with a small scoop of gelato vanilla ice cream and it just seal the experience. UNACCEPTABLE WAIT TIMES: We were seated for 3 hours since 5:45pm and only 2 courses arrived (appetizer and pasta). The pace was glacial, and every table around us was staring at empty plates in disbelief. It is a complete management failure to be this slow with a $275 per person pre-fix menu with reservation only. Plus our reservation started already quite early for a holiday dinner. Must had something wrong in the kitchen. BAD ATTITUDE & NO APOLOGIES: When we finally spoke to the floor manager about the delay, we were met with zero accountability. The manager literally asked "What do you mean?" twice and dismissed us by saying they were "surprisingly busy." It's Valentine's Day--everyone has a reservation and pre-fixed menu. Being "busy" is not an excuse for being unprepared and rude. RUINED HOLIDAY ATMOSPHERE: There was no apology for the wait or the service. The front room was a chaotic mess, packed with people who had later reservations waiting over an hour just to be seated. The entire restaurant was in a bad mood because of the lack of organization on a holiday, and many couples also had their night ruined, started fighting or falling into cold silences at their tables. NON-EXISTENT SERVICE: Our waiter never checked in on us once. We sat there for three hours and the only attention we received was two water refills. INEDIBLE FOOD: To make matters worse, the food was poor quality. The oysters were incredibly fishy/smelly, the fish was overcooked and tough, and the pasta was mediocre at best. This establishment proved they are incapable of handling a holiday crowd or providing basic hospitality. They took our money and ruined our night. DO NOT waste your time or money here. Feels like a Michelin star restaurant and yes it used to be one. For some reason it lost its stars a few years ago and we went to check it out as it was near a location we were visiting. Solid italian food. Very nicely decorated at the high end level. However service did not reflect Michelin quality that it used to boast. For example I had bread crumbs on my table all night and that was never cleaned up. They should fix this basic step that all Michelin level fine dining restaurants cover. Had the following: Passera e Caviale - Signature dish that had lots of caviar but didn't seem to be that special as it was just fish in olive oil with caviar on top. The idea is great though. Beef Tartare - Solid Lobster Bisque - Nice. Rich. You can share this and suggest couples definitely do as it is a large portion. Trofie Nero - Signature dish and the restaurant's most popular. Way too expensive for the food, service and general experience. We were a party of seven. After sitting down, it took a solid 20 minutes before the server came over to ask for our drink orders. We had trouble finding the waitstaff a few times during the meal. The group of us shared five appetizers, which were all tasty but not so differentiated that they were worth $27 to $35 each. Dinner entrees were in the $50's, and while enjoyable, not even in the zone on pricing. My colleague is very educated on wines and had trouble finding a bottle that felt about the right cost to value. His take is that the wine list was outrageously overpriced. I was invited to Ai Fiori by a vendor for a corporate event. Not one to say no to a free event I went and was sooo glad I did. Ai Fiori is located inside a hotel, once you get off the elevator you are greeted by a hosted who kindly walked me back to the function. There, I was greeted with my choice of drink, which I selected a Pinot noir. Several hors d'oeuvres were floating around; my favorite was the prosciutto. The ambiance was luxurious. There was another private function happening at the same time; It was divided by heavy, thick curtains. It was giving 5 star quality. Since this was a private event there was a fixed menu. For the antipasti I ordered the Crudo e Caviale, the creme fraiche at the bottom of the fish was out of this world. I then ordered the Risotto ai Funghi as my Secondi. So creamy and delish. For my Dolci, I ordered the Tiramisu and I swear this was the best Tiramisu I ever had. The chocolate espresso cake at the bottom is what i still dream of. Normally I am not one to write a review about my experience, but I felt like this occasion needed to be voiced. Like many others, I decided to make reservations here for Valentine's Day. It was extra special because since I also work in the hospitality industry, special occasions like these is rare to spend it with my girlfriend, seeing that I'm always working those shifts We checked in around 8-8:30. Our reservation was at 8:45. Furthermore there wasn't any room in the bar to sit and wait because there were a lot of couples also waiting for tables. I am not sure who's idea it was to overbook but on a day like Valentine's Day is unacceptable. I also overheard when asked if the tables that have been seated know about any time limit, the response was "Yes, but some are just sitting a little longer." We waited a whole hour to finally be seated. While I will say that Michael Angelo was trying his hardest, unfortunately it just couldn't save the experience. We were handed one oyster each, after that the first 2 course came relatively quickly. By the 3rd and 4th course, it took the longest time to arrive at the table. Not only that, but both proteins (wagyu ribeye and squab) arrived cold. Once I voiced that the food was cold, it was quickly taken away only to be then be given another round of cold protein. We were already starving at this point so we ate our cold food. Our server came by to ask if everything was ok and it wasn't, but again I understand that it wasn't his fault. All in all, dining here was honestly a complete let down. Not once did any manager approach the table to try to apologize for being sent cold food twice. Its unacceptable and It's even more upsetting because this restaurant is recognized by the Michelin Guide, so you would think that the quality would be top tier. But to not be able to properly control your reservations, charge $275 per person and bring out cold meat not once, but twice?? It was an embarrassment. read more

After a second amazing experience at Ai Fiori, I thought it is the proper time to put up my review. This time I tried the four course prix fixe, so was able to sample more dishes. The food was all amazing, and the service was phenomenal across the dinner. First course I had the foie terrine with pear, which came with some brioche. The fruit worked well to cut through the richness of the foie, and everything was seasoned well. Second course I had the trofie pasta with scallop, which had amazing texture. Portions of the pasta plates are smaller though which I didn't mind given the size of everything else Entree I had the scallops with sunchokes. Perfectly executed scallops, yum! For dessert I finished with the chocolate mousse; this was a bit too sweet for my taste but had great texture contrast. An interesting experience. Visited restaurant for a special dinner. Very posh ambiance, I would honestly say too dark for my eyes, but that's not important for this review. First dish was Tuna Niçoise salad, which was not bad but not amazing either. Our next dish was wild mushroom risotto, and this was the real disappointment. The rice was overcooked, there was no mushroom aromatics you would expect from wild mushrooms, and texturally the whole dish was a mush. The lamb dish was okay, but only the lamb chops - didn't like the flavor profile of the lamb shoulder confit. Our dessert was a cheese plate, which was fine. Good service, prompt and attentive. To explain the 3 star rating: the food experience was mediocre. I didn't pay for the dinner, but if I would, it would be a grand disappointment. I remember loving Marea over a decade ago and was excited to try Ai Fiori when I was in New York a couple weeks back. I was visiting for a conference, and this was the only reservation I made for my trip, a late Wednesday dinner (early by California time) on our first night in town. I went with my mom, my son, and an old friend based in the city. The reservation was easy to make, and the restaurant felt pretty quiet the whole time we were there, which was both good and bad for a fancy restaurant dinner with a four-year-old. The space was calm and attractive, and we asked for a remote table where we could hem the kid in between two adults. There was a nice corner table with banquette seating that met our purposes quite nicely. Service was good, if not noteworthy. My son does pretty well at restaurants, but he had a few moments, and I don't think anyone was trying to hang out with us. Ai Fiori isn't for children, but it is worth noting that my son, a generally awful eater, had maybe the biggest dinner of his life at this restaurant. Not only did he finish his (hilariously expensive) spaghetti with tomato sauce, he also ate a bunch of my mom's seafood spaghetti. On the grown-up side, I enjoyed the Spice Trade cocktail to start, a nice, refreshing drink made with Teremana blanco tequila, pimento dram, jasmine, ginger, white peppercorn, passionfruit, and lime. I also liked my friend's Fiori Gin & Tonic, with Gin Agricolo Blagheur, Apologue persimmon liqueur, Meyer lemon, grapefruit, and Fever Tree Mediterranean tonic. I had a lovely glass of Sancerre to go with the remainder of my dinner. We opted for the four course prix fixe for $120 a person, which felt like the right approach, if ambitious for our situation. This came with our choices of antipasto, pasta or risotto, main, and dolce. Overall, I found the food reasonably good, which is to say fine, but not as delicious as it should be for the price. Dinner started with a little amuse bouche, a crunchy chickpea cracker with green pea and scallion. Then there was bread service with a few different options. I got the sourdough and it wasn't especially fresh, but it did come with quality butter. My favorite dish of the night was my polipo, a lovely, hearty antipasto of tender seared octopus over a bed of fregola with calamari and spring pea. I also tried and liked the ricciola, a light crudo of hiramasa with shiso, sunflower seed, and spring onion. I was less into my pasta, a doughy cavatelli with English pea, morel, fiore sardo, and cured egg yolk. It wasn't bad or anything, but it didn't taste as good as it sounded. The spaghetti was better, the pasta a pleasant al dente, served with a winning combination of blue crab, lemon, bottarga, and Calabrian chili. Both mains I tried were just okay. The aragosta was a butter-poached lobster tail that was somehow a tiny bit rubbery and muted in flavor, plated with guanciale, chickpea, and ramp. The ippoglosso was pan-seared halibut with fava bean, broccolini, and basil. A solid piece of fish, but not memorable. We shared all the desserts, and these were all great. My favorite was the budino di riso, a coconut rice pudding with kumquat and pistachio gelato. The tartaletta was pretty and satisfying, with crème fraîche, grapefruit, and strawberry campari sorbetto. The cioccolato was a rich chocolate mousse with peanut praline and banana whipping ganache, and we got more chocolate with the check, four bonbons that might have been chocolate caramels. I wouldn't know, as my son happily claimed mine. I liked Ai Fiori, but it was more expensive than it was special. I'd rather try Marea again than come back here. I'll bet they make an excellent tomato pasta there, too. read more
