Lalo's is my absolute favorite Mexican food joint in Ventura, usually go there at least once a week. Very inexpensive, most everything is super tasty. Fast and friendly service. Slightly syrupy Coke, which is an important feature of any decent Mexican joint. If your a meat eater, order anything with the Pastor in it- it is the best I've had in town. If your a veggie their Chili Relleno is 4/5, I have several friends who get it in burrito form every time they go there. Keep doin' what your doin' Lalo! It works. read more

This was my neighborhood burrito spot in the 90s as a teenager. They've added a lot of flair and signage to their outer decor since those days and anytime I return or drive by there are crowds! Currently, I am on my own personal quest to find the dankest burritos around the the towns I grew up around. I'm scouting all the breakfast burritos in Ventura at the moment so Lalo's rendition was up to bat. Being in the food biz myself I have certain criteria about basic staple dishes; Lalo's breakfast burreet is where it's at. I prefer the bacon/sausage mix, which they offer. It also has 3 eggs, potatoes and cheese. No chips, they have a sign denoting they're reserved only for seafood. $6 and change is what it costs. These are my style of breakfast b's. I like to sample each joints hot and mild salsas, as well. No complaints on theirs, both flavors brought that badass burrito justice! The service was friendly and fast, and the food was hot and not greasy. The only thing I do different with burritos I make, as a former caterer, is use crispy bacon and crispier hash browns, but overall, a 5 out 5 on the burrito scale for theirs! While I'll always be a Gringo, in the past 30+ years I have learned what Real Mexican Food is. Whether from Baja, Sonora, or Oaxaca, I know "authentic" vice El Torito, Yolanda's and Taco Bell. There are several good Mexican restaurants in Oxnard, I found myself in Ventura, and decided to give Lalo's a try. I had just the "standard" carne asada burrito (MY gauge for good Mexican shack snacks). It was most excellent! The meat was perfectly cooked, as was the rice. I got the impression that they, in fact, used a beef roast rather than skirt steak. The flavor seemed more complex and the mouth feel was more like pot roast. The beans were flavorful and the onions, cilantro, and salsa finished of a simple, delicious dish. No cheese, guacamole, sour cream or (sin of all sins) lettuce. Just rice, beans, meat, onions and salsa. Can't wait to go back and try the lengues tacos! Wish they had roasted grasshoppers though... I miss those from Oaxaca. read more

Visited the beach for the day from out of town and found Lalo's on Yelp. The shrimp cocktail was delicious with what seemed like never ending shrimp. The shrimp tostada was so good I didn't want to share it. Burritos are huge, very filling. Prices are average for seafood and burritos. The girls working were super friendly. Ate here for the first time today actually drive down from goleta just to try this place. Their prices are so fair and they are far from stingy with their meats and items. Their chicken for the chicken nachos was flavored so amazing and my dad loved his chili Colorado burrito they packed it with meat. Can't wait to eat here again !!. Worth the drive !. Good stuff - their Enchiladas are geat, burgers - yummy! It's close to our shop, and most of the guys can just walk there. Called in at about 12:45 on a Saturday afternoon to order a last minute catering platter, and was really pleased that they could accommodate me so quickly. Less than an hour later, my car was being packed with chopped Chicken, a small order of Carne asada, and the most delicious beans i have had in a while. My friends were pretty tipsy when I arrived, but two meat platters, beans and an array of cilantro, radishes, and onions were annihilated almost as soon as I laid the spread out. Suffice it to say, I was the hit of the party. The two small trays of meat ($40 each) and one side order of beans ($9) was enough to feed about 16 hungry people, the majority of whom were men with hefty appetites. I used to go here when I lived in Ventura and it is a great place to go for a burrito but I can't say much about anything else. Actually, their nachos were pretty good too. The burgers were okay and as far as I can remember I never felt interested enough to try anything else on the menu. The burritos are the best thing about this place, affordable and delicious. Both breakfast and regular(?). They do them well here. The seating is strictly outdoor because of window service. Not much is special about this, it can really be an eyesore looking up and down the Ave. Having a friend to converse with or taking your meal to go are typically the better options. They used to be cash only and now ventured in debit cards, and maybe credit, which helped when hunger struck. Try it out, let me know if their is anything on the menu worth trying. I can attest that the carnitas burrito will leave a taste you may hunger for, something that's starting to come back to me. read more

This place reminds me of the mexican food joints in Boyle Heights and East LA I used to frequent in my college days. Good, tasty food, inexpensive prices. The decor is not flashy and prententious, but simple in a paisa style (complete with the sole restroom key on a wooden spoon you get from the cashier). I had the cabeza burrito and it was very good, soft meat, rice, beans and cilantro n onions. It came with the red sauce which I liked, but some people dont, so ask first. A bit north on the Avenue, but definitely a return trip for me. Good spot on the way to or from Ojai, especially for my biker buddies. read more

I absolutely love Lalo's ... My family and I drive from Oxnard to eat There. It is the Best Mexican food around!! We go there quite often so we have tried a good portion of their menu. I must say I have not eaten anything I didn't like. But my Favorites are Shrimp cocktails, Breakfast burritos (any kind) Sopes and their carnitas meat is amazing!!! Eating picnic style outside, I noticed the range of patron vehicles, motorcycles, Range Rovers, BMWs, horse and truck trailers, low riders and everything in between. This is the locals hangout. Interesting cross section of folks who obviously like authentic like me. The chili relleno combo plate was amazing. A tender perfectly cooked egg batter surrounded the tasty cheese stuffed pepper and topped with a light cheesy tomatillo sauce. Not fried and heavy but nearly like a omlette. Super. Good burgers. Great breakfast burritos. If you order chips and salsa, they give you a whole 8 oz - 12 oz bowl of salsa for a low price. Merchant has a habit of rounding prices down to the nearest whole dollar. So, a meal that comes to 5.15 dollars would be 5.00 dollars even. Children's quesadillas are really small. Best to buy a regular quesadilla and save the rest for later if you have a kiddo in mind. read more

Have been going here since Johnny's got crappy. It's a little further up the Ave. but worth it. I love their tacos pastor platter. I also like their carnitas platter. Good fast food Mexican. The food is decent, with generous portions and all staff wearing the restaurant tee shirts, they are on top of things. Ordered taquitos, nice thin crispy tortillas but the miniscule amount of guacamole was hidden by a mound of shredded lettuce and cheese. My friend had the crispy tacos and they are good looking. I'd describe the food here is competent but lacking soul. Very popular place but for my dollar I'd rather eat at La Casita down the street. read more
