Came here for lunch as I do from time to time. I got a couple of slices of the New York style pepperoni pizza. It was fresh and tasty as it always is. What I like most about this place is the speed at which the pizza is served to you. They cut slices of pizzas that are already pre-made and pop them in the oven to heat up. It's in the oven for not even a minute, but comes out nice and toasty. The Sicilian style pizza is really good here too. Having never had an actual New York pizza in my life, I'm probably not the best judge of New York style pizzas. They being said, for what it's worth, I once came here with a New Yorker who loves pizza. He said the pizza here is authentic and delicious. read more

I've heard so much about Lamonica's over the years--especially from a Brooklyn-native client who insisted it was the closest thing to an authentic NY slice--so my friend and I recently headed over to Westwood to see if it lived up to the hype. Unfortunately, our experience was quite a letdown. When we arrived, we considered ordering a full pie, but we were stunned to learn a large meat lovers would cost $54. They charge $5 per topping, which seems excessive even for an 18" pizza; we actually laughed at the register because the price was so absurd. We ended up sticking to the lunch deal, which is reasonably priced at $9 for two slices and two toppings, and the refillable drink option is definitely a steal. However, the quality didn't justify even that lower price. The slices were heavily oiled--we needed a stack of napkins just to dab off the grease--and they tasted like they had been sitting out for a long time. On the plus side, I did enjoy the atmosphere. The NYC-themed decor, including the subway memorabilia and the celebrity mural, offers a fun, nostalgic vibe, though my friend found the interior to be a bit dingy and dated. Ultimately, while I respect that Lamonica's has been a fixture in the Village since 1980, the lackluster food makes it hard to recommend when there are much better pizza options nearby. There's nothing worse than a restaurant that gets propped up and inseparable from nostalgia. It will get recommended ad nauseam and newcomers who disagree are seen as insane. Lamonicas is decent. It's slices are re-heated and served. The service is not worth mentioning, but it's a small pizza place so who cares. The dough and sauce are good but do not justify the outrageous price. $8 for a slice. read more

Haven't been here since 20 years ago. For a New York style pizza, the slices are tiny. What happened? A slice is $5 for a cheese which is ok, but the slice is half the size of a normal New York slice. Which is normally at least a 18" pie. Flavor was ok but def something missing. The service was simple and straightforward. Once we were seated outside , they brought the wings and Nutella knot. The thicker slices were good but thicker and with sourdough bread. They were not necessarily my preferred taste but they were great . The sausage and bbq slice were the better flavored slices. The crust has a nice grip with crust. The ambiance is great and quiet and calm. The seating outside is limited if larger crowds attend but they were great! The New York wall art was amazing ! This spot is great for a pizza lover. However, the downside is the lack of parking spaces. It's difficult to find parking spaces but worth it. 8/10 read more

I've had Lamonica's bookmarked for years and years and I can finally say that this is just average pizza. Makes sense that in a college town every other restaurant is busy while I was the only customer here. When I walked in, I wasn't actually sure who worked there as there were 3 people yelling and laughing, only one who was initially behind the counter. Then as I went to pay I realized the other two were also "working" so I'm not sure how much attention there is to the business. I ordered a sausage slice and a Sicilian cheese square. The sausage slice had a good amount of sausage with good flavor. The part of the dough with the toppings had a good chew but the outer crust was extremely dry overcooked. As for the square slice, the sauce was a little sweet but good, but the amount of cheese was embarrassing. The dough in the middle again had a good fluffy chew but it was still dry and especially the outer crust. I feel like they overcook their pizzas, which sit out for who knows how long, drying out, then get dried out even more when reheated to order. I've had much worse and I've had much better and this won't be a place I return to read more

Always a great experience. I regular this establishment at least once a quarter. Having experienced quite a few NYC slices in NYC, that style of crust and slice is my favorite which makes it a challenge to find here. Lamonca's is if not #1, in the top 5 NYC style in Los Angeles. 5/5 stars. I don't think it would be fair to take off a star from the rating because of the crust. I believe the myth; we need the fresh Hudson River water to accomplish that. My go to is a couple slices of pepperoni. On top of the slice, the environment is a pleasure. Lamonica's has a charming interior and decent pizza to back it up. I tried their classic cheese slice and while I wouldn't come back, I understand why people come here. The shop made me feel like I was transported to New York City. Besides the obvious decor, customers are in a hurry, they mind their business and, while the staff aren't particularly kind, they are ready to help. You get in, get your pizza and leave. No one is pretending to sell you a high quality slice or an elevated dining experience. You'll find a solid, cheap slice here and there'll always be clientele who gravitate towards that. Lamonica's is not my preference, but I enjoyed my experience and don't regret giving them a shot. read more

NY style pizza & vibes! Stopped at Lamonica's NY pizza randomly today on our way to a Lakers game in LA & so glad we did! It just so happened to be their anniversary, so all pizza was discounted all day. We tried the pepperoni and cheese slices. So good! Quick and friendly service. When you enter you instantly feel like you're in New York! Whole Foods is a few doors down so it was nice to stop there for a latte after. I was back in my old stomping grounds in Westwood and I hadn't been to either of my favorite Westwood pizza spots in ages. Unfortunately one of them (Enzo's Pizzeria) is no longer open. I was happy to find that Lamonica's is still standing with the same great service and NY Pizza ambiance that I remember. Unfortunately the pizza slices are now $6 a piece, so I would definitely recommend coming here during the lunch specials if you can. They do have a nice outside seating area that wasn't there before, and the inside seating is still plentiful as well. The pizza is a classic and my style thin and crisp crust, that is slightly foldable but also has a little bit of a crunch when you take a bite. If you're looking for a classic and West style slice, this is definitely the spot in Westwood. They did mention they're going to bring back their whole pizza specials in a few weeks, so I would definitely inquire about those if you're ordering a whole pizza. Many iconic NYC pizza houses of renown are making their way to LA. Lamonicas is an institution. The claim to fame is they ship in the dough from NYC, a la the famous NYC tap water that supposedly makes the pizza slices sing. As someone who travels the world for pizza, and prefers different slices over the commitment to a single pie, Lamonicas does not disappoint, and in fact lives up to the hype. There's paid street parking. I got lucky and got a spot. They don't do online ordering so I ordered in person. Service was friendly and helpful. They gave me the neighbor discount :) I ordered 3 veggie slices and 2 meat slices for our crew of 3 adults and one very discerning food critic who happens to be 3 and a half. The 3 and a half year old loved her cheese pizza slice and said we should do this again. She also loves Danny Boy Pizza which is a few blocks away. The meat slices crew loved the pepperoni slice and thought it was one of the best pizza they had this year. That's high compliment. The magic seems to be in the dough. Even if you order at the counter, the pizza is ready within minutes. The grandma square was decent, chewy and had good flavor, the sauce wasn't too sweet and had depth, but the pesto was the show stopper. For 5 pizza slices, I think with tip and discount it netted under $39, not exactly cheap but a very satisfying experience. This is a good addition to the UCLA/Westwood neighborhood. Tip: Try the slices before you buy the pie. You may be surprised what you end up loving. read more

I have been coming to this place since I was in college at UCLA. I'm very happy to see that it is still around and thriving in Westwood. I am not a go-to pizza person. I like it well enough but it's not one of my favorite things. However, I cannot leave the area without picking up at least a slice of their pizza every time I am there. I got there once right before closing. As their last customer they let me customize a crazy slice with anything I wanted. It was such a cool experience. The two toppings I really love here are the razor thin shaved mushroom pizza and also the thinly sliced and not greasy sausage pizza. You really can't go wrong with anything but for me, those are the standouts. They actually have the dough made in New York presumably using New York tap water which is supposed to be very tasty. It is one of the few pizzas where I eat the crust. It's just a reliable and fantastic business. read more

If you're looking for old school NY Sicilian thick crust this is your place. It's nostalgic for me because it was my first pizza place when I was a freshman at UCLA way back in 1982. It was brand new, 81', everyone raved about it. To this day my boys and I crave it at least once a month. We also love their thin crust. We live just outside delivery zone but it's a quick hop on the 10/405 loop from Santa Monica and it's always ready when we get to Westwood. read more

I cheated. I'm a bad person. I've been going to Enzo's down the street since probably 2012 after a not great experience at Lamonica's many years ago. I don't know what it was, but something called me back to Lamonica's today after over a decade. Oh. My. Stars. What an amazing pizza. WOW! I came in originally planning to grab a slice and then to head down the street for salad, but after devouring my first slice, I went up and ordered another. The crust is crispy on the bottom to perfection. (Note: my actual crust was burnt, so I wasn't able to eat in. Minus a half a star for that.) I appreciated that they use real cheese in the Parmesan shakers, not that fake cheese that many places use. One thing to note: they don't appear to have weekday lunch specials anymore like some of the photos show? A cheese slice (cash) is $4.93, so a little steep since the slices aren't huge. There is a 3% fee for using a card. Personality of the cashier is nonexistent -- so between the burnt crust, tiny slice size and lack of service -- it could be a five star experience with a few changes. I have been going to Lamonica's New York pizza since the 80s just all in all great Pizza. I've even met the owner a few times back in the day but most people don't know that he sells dough to Costco and also Mulberry Street Pizza buys his dough and probably many more if you haven't been there you definitely are missing something. The pizza here was delicious and the staff was very friendly and welcoming. They have pizza available by the slice with large variety of options. We opted for a thick and thin crust pizza to go, which was ready in about 15 minutes. Prices are very fair as the pizzas are large and can easily feed 2 to 4 people. Both of the pizzas were delicious, I did, however prefer the thicker crust. They do have a bit of tables for dine in and metered parking out front, but ideal to go for an easy dinner at home. read more

I have been coming to LA Monica's since the 80's when they first opened. Today I was very disappointed in the pizza. My husband and i looked at each other thinking the slices did not look the same as usual. We got both Sicilian squares and 3 slices cheese, mushroom, and bbq chicken. We spent over $40 dollars on 7 slices . We were so disappointed in the crust/ dough as it was not the same. This place has been consistent for so many years. But not today! We saw the owner in there today, and wondered why he wasn't asking diners how they are enjoying their slices, but instead he was sorting trash from one container to another, and looked like throwing away mail. I used to love this place. I even bought a hat to support them. I was that much of a fan. However I recently ordered delivery and received a $20 up charge for ordering a meat lovers. The pizza itself was $27 Of course they neglected to tell me that this would be the case until it was delivered. They also told me it was super slow. I'm sure all of this is just coincidence . The pizza itself was delicious as usual and is the only reason this isn't a one star review. Adding toppings should never cost as much as the pizza itself.
