This is a small restaurant, and unfortunately, they don't offer an online waitlist. On a Friday night, we were told there would be about an hour wait for a table, so we decided to order takeout instead. The food took around 20 minutes to prepare, but despite being told they'd call when it was ready, they never did. As for the food, it was a mixed bag: - Beef Noodle Soup: The beef wasn't tender, and the soup was slightly sour, which isn't the typical profile I was expecting. - Dumplings: They were juicy, but the skin was thicker than I'd like. - Cold Chicken: This was a highlight--I really enjoyed it! - Dan Dan Noodles: These had a decent flavor overall, but they also had a slightly sour taste that felt off. I eat this food almost every night (literally) and I crave it even more often. It's incredibly delicious. Here's the run down. Food: Get the scallion noodles. I don't know why they're so slept on. The flavor is impeccable. I also love the Dan Dan noodles and the bings (but I don't eat mushrooms so can't attest to that). My friends all rave about the dumplings, but I'm more of a noodle gal. Was so excited to try this ultra hype establishment, these brothers know how to make a solid dumpling. Be prepared to wait, although we didn't have to wait more than 30 minutes, go early. Simple menu, offering dumplings, noodles, and soup. Order at the counter and then the items will be brought out to you as they are prepared. Extra bowls, utensils and napkins are self serve. You'll want to taste a bit of everything in this quaint spot. This place is so cool! We came here with some friends in town and we split a ton of menu items. FYI a lot of the food is spicy here but was so good. Dan Dan noodles had a ton of peanuts but really good. My boyfriend and I ordered the dan dan noodles, beef noodle soup, and pork and chive dumplings. I LOVED the dan dan noodles. The texture of the noodles were perfect and the flavors are super present with soy sauce and black vinegar. The beef noodle soup is also superb, but i personally prefer softer noodles and these were more firm. My boyfriend says that the soup is super balanced and comforting, a true chinese comfort food. For the pork and chive dumplings, the sauce that soaks the dumplings is addicting. I dont think ive had a better sauce for my dumplings before. Its a perfect balance of salty and sweet. Came here with my friends and had a great experience. We arrived on Saturday night around 7:45 pm and was told there'd be a 1.5 hr wait. They took our names down, and told us that they would let us know when our table was ready. We decided to go to a cocktail bar down the street to wait. We were able to keep track of where we were in line, therefore we noticed that things were moving along quicker than expected, and we wrapped up a drinks just as they told us that a table was ready for us, about an hour later. We were seated outside, which was nice because the weather was perfect. The waiter was super helpful in giving us recommendations. I had the beef noodle soup which was delicious! I had the chili oil on the side so that I could control how spicy things were and they were happy to accommodate. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the beef was super tender and flavorful. We also shared the pork and chive dumplings, which came in a chili sauce. After driving and walking by since they've opened, and trying them at West Fest, we finally had a chance to dine-in. I'll be honest, we had a couple somewhat negative experiences before pushing it all side and staying determined to try this place out. The service has been consistently meh, but the food is out of this world and worth coming back for, even if we don't get a smile or hello. The restaurant itself is small and cute. Decorated with plants and they keep up a holiday spirit and decorated with Chinese Lunar New Year decor. All of the food we tried consisted of two visits. The portions are big and shareable and our eyes are always hungrier than our stomachs. Out of the two experiences we've had, only the first one was spicy (which I prefer). Dan Dan Noodles - deliciously nutty and spicy. The texture of the noodles is chewy and fresh and all the toppings take it up that extra notch. Make sure to mix it up or you'll be "stuck" eating all the pork that finds its way to the bottom. Or just eat it however you like! Cold Noodle - so incredibly refreshing. It's like nothing I've had before. The flavors are spicy and umami - I really don't know how to explain it. I was a little nervous at first because I've never had cold noodles but I loved them so much, I ordered them as my entree for the second visit. Lamb Bing - ended up taking a bite just to try it hot since we were completely stuffed by the time it came out. We were warned it would take 30 minutes though. The texture was chewy and somewhat tough. Reminded me of meat pies I grew up on. I didn't love it and I definitely didn't hate it. I also didn't order it on our second visit. Pork and Chive Dumplings - a healthy portion! About 13 dumplings in total. These had a slightly nuttier flavor and we eat the broth like soup even if it's not meant that way LOL it's just so dang delicious. Beef and Green Onion Dumplings - absolutely love and prefer these ones. Both are amazing though, don't get me wrong. The beef broth had more of a kick which I prefer. The chilies are a nice touch. Also had 13 dumplings and drinkable broth - yum! Eggplant Salad - recommended by staff on the first visit (did my best to warm them up. Maybe it's a vibe I give off?). Do not skip on ordering this!! I visited this restaurant for the first time and unfortunately left with a bad taste--not because of the food, but because of the *service and lack of transparency*. The wonton soup is already overpriced at \$16, and to my surprise, an additional \~$0.70 "health insurance" fee was added to the bill without any prior notice or signage. I have no issue supporting workers' benefits, *but customers deserve transparency*. When I politely asked about the charge and requested it be removed on principle, the waitress became noticeably hostile. Her demeanor completely shifted--she was cold, dismissive, and rude when serving our soups (there were two of us), which made the whole experience uncomfortable. She plopped it down spilling some soup. Between the lack of disclosure, the passive-aggressive behavior, and the overpriced menu, I won't be returning. Today I ordered take out for the first time, and a few weeks ago I dined in for the first time. The food is phenomenal. Spicy, but in a way that carries throughout each dish without being over the top. I'm attempting to try everything on the menu, unfortunately takeout might be the best way to do this... Staff is cold, unfriendly, and during my first time dining they made me and my mother feel unwelcome and almost dumb for not knowing our way around! And shared the 10 dumplings.As a broke college student it was a little on the pricey side but I would say its worth the serving size and flavor. god this was so good and filling. I arrived right when my email confirmation said my food would be ready, but when I went inside, they said another 5-10 minutes. I waited outside for 10 then went back in to find that it still wasn't ready. We'd ordered one of those delicious scallion bread appetizers that does take a little longer to cook, but still. I stood at the counter until the food was ready - about 30 minutes after the promised time. I was pretty angry, but the manager did apologize at one point and offer me a glass of iced tea. She pointed out how busy they were and also mentioned that they were having some equipment difficulty, but I still must've shown my annoyance on my face. When I finally got my food, the manager handed it to me and said she'd comped the meal! That goes *such* a long way - I'd been ready to write this place off but their recognition of an issue and addressing it fixed the problem - I'm glad, because their food is too delicious to boycott! read more

Service was poor and food was fine. I think I overhyped this spot for myself as I saw it first on social media. When I got here at 11:30am, the dining room was packed. There were two open tables outside, but staff appeared limited. I was told the wait would be 20-25 minutes and asked if we wanted to put our name down. I gave him my contact information and then was told that the wait would be max 35 minutes. My party and I stepped outside and a father son duo quickly followed in pursuit, menus in hand, and snagged an outdoor table. We were confused on what the wait was for and if the outside tables were up for grabs. Just as we were about to inquire to the wait staff about the outside dining, another guest snagged the last outdoor table. We went inside and asked about the wait time and how the guests that arrived after us were already seated outdoors. The worker apologized and said the wait was for inside dining. It was a miscommunication, but we did not understand outdoor dining was first come first serve as we would've happily dined outdoors. The wait went by fairly quickly and after about 15 minutes, we were seated indoors. Note: This isn't traditional table side service. You have to order at the register. I ordered the Dou Sha Bing, Spicy Dou Hua, and the beef and onion dumplings to share. When I was putting in my order, the cashier asked if this order was for two guests. When I answered yes, she informed me, in a not so kind tone, "That's not a lot of food." I was a bit taken aback and just answered that was fine. I believe she was intending to communicate portion sizes are small here. After about 15 minutes the first dish was served. Another 10 minutes went by and my spicy Dou Hua came, another 10 minutes one beef and onion dumpling. At this point, dishes were served staggered, and we were only missing two more items (Dou sha bing and one more order of the beef and onion dumpling). Another 15 minutes went by and we were slightly confused why one order of the dumplings came when both orders were the same. None of us were touching our food and we continued to watch closely as other guests were being served that came after us. The same cashier/waitress from before (that took my order) asked us if something was wrong. We informed her that we got one of the beef dumplings, but not the other and we were missing the Dou sha bing. Her response was "As stated on the menu, the Dou sha bing's are made to order and takes half an hour." She left after this and didn't address the delayed dumplings. At this point it was about the half an hour mark. I was also not informed at check out the exact cook to order time for the Dou Sha Bing. After just a couple of minutes, the head chef personally brought out the beef dumplings and apologized for the wait. My spicy Dou Hua was good, but nothing special. The flavor definitely packed a spicy kick, which was enjoyable. The beef and onion dumpling was fine, but the beef was rubbery (like it was overcooked). It was a healthy portion about 8/9 dumplings. The last thing to come was my Dou Sha Bing. It was piping hot and I could tell it was freshly made. However, it definitely took more than half an hour. The Bing dough was so crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was the perfect golden brown color, but the red bean paste inside lacked flavor. It tasted like store bought generic mochi filling. The filling to dough ratio was also off. Mostly dough, little filling. Overall, I'm underwhelmed by my experience. The menu is limited, so it can be a good spot for a snack or a place to try multiple dishes. However, I likely won't be returning. read more

Sunday, 2pm. I finally got a table at Lao Peng You! There's usually a bit of a wait! It's a bit backwards- you grab your table, grab a menu from the front and THEN go up to order. The servers are really just food runners. They don't take your order. There's a section with silverware, chopsticks and extra bowls for sharing. You get all of that yourself. The food is beautifully seasoned- fresh parsley and chunks of garlic. The broth is perfection. The spice level for me was on point- a bit of a kick but also a welcome kick. The lady who I assumed is Conan answered the phone, informed me they close at 10- what she did not inform me nor bother to tell me before hanging up abruptly is how long the wait time or that there is an insurance fee for their employees which whatever. Nonetheless, I went with my partner unaware of the problems ahead. We arrived around 8:40 and were "greeted" by who I assume was Conan (5'10, Caucasian, pony tails idk). When finding out the outrageous wait time for a counter order place like this we just decided to have it to go. With this Conan seemed annoyed, but let's be real they seemed annoyed before we even walked in and frankly the entire staff gave off standoffish, ingenious, and pretentious grungy art kids who got their parents to pay for their tuition at SAIC. So I ordered and went back in our car to wait because I have eat of course. And tell me why Conan got my number but didnt decide to text me that it was ready for pick up, I waited a whole 18 minutes without even receiving a text from them. Had I not entered would they even reach out to me? We. will. never. know-- but maybe one of yall can test this theory out When I entered I said is my food done and they all looked at me like I was crazy. Like idk if you work in the service industry maybe have some customer service skills, be personable, genuine, time management, and most importantly decorum and respect. I have to admit that we came to this spot after watching The Bear. We were visiting Chicago and wanted to venture away from downtown. It's a small, counter order spot. We went right when they opened on a Thursday, and several others were already there waiting as well. The service was really friendly and helpful. We decided to share the dan dan noodles and the pork and chive dumplings. We thought maybe we might need one more dish between the two of us, but we left completely stuffed. They brought food out as it was ready, so we started with the noodles. The flavor was insane. The noodles were cooked perfectly and there was a perfect amount of sauce. The dumplings came out after a few more minutes. These were also delicious. I think there were maybe 12 or 14 dumplings in one order. I don't normally eat much Chinese food, as it often feels heavy or is bland. I was so pleasantly surprised here though. The only thing I am sad about is that I can't go there in a regular basis. I'm so glad I read about it, as I would never have known otherwise. If you have been disappointed by other Chinese spots, don't give up! Try Lao Peng You. read more

Came here with my partner this past weekend for an early lunch after they opened and enjoyed our experience overall. I didn't love the music they were playing, not gonna lie. It gave the vibe that we were in a hipster thrift shop instead of a northern Chinese restaurant, but it is what it is. The food on the other hand was pretty yummy. We ordered 3 different items to share from the cold noodles which were excellent (and our favorite) to the pork and chive dumplings which were also pretty good. We also ordered the beef noodle soup, and while it was decent, it was our least favorite. I'm used to more broth being present typically. Not sure if that is a Northern Chinese way of doing it, but either way it wasn't for us as much. The decor is minimalist and feels almost like as if what i'd expect a modern Chinese restaurant in Sweden to be like, lol. read more

You order at the counter and then the servers bring out the food as it is ready. Overall Lao Peng You was pretty good northern chinese food. Dan Dan Noodles: very flavorful noodles with bits of pork. The noodles had a great texture, reminiscent of chinese noodles. Pork and Chive Dumplings: served in chili oil. Delicious! The wrappers had a new chew and the filling was good. Cong You Bing: It comes in one piece, so we had to rip it apart to share. I really enjoyed the crispiness and flaky pastry. However, the filling was way over salted and I could not eat all of my 1/3 of a piece. :( Wood Ear Mushrooms: this was my favorite dish. Stopped by Lao Peng You with my partner this weekend and decided to try some of the dishes here. Upon entering, I was impressed by the ambiance of the restaurant - the green exterior and interior and family photos that hung throughout the walls for decor came together for a calm/peaceful and homey vibe. Now for the food, we got the cold chicken, pork and chive dumplings, and beef noodle soup. The cold chicken was so good! I think this was such a delicious and simple introduction to the meal. The peanuts mixed with the herbs and chili oil made for a perfect bite. 9/10 The dumplings would have to be my next favorite dish. The sauce that it came it was necessary to complete the dish. The dumplings were soft and tender and yummy. 8/10 The beef noodle soup was good. It had all of the flavors and spice but it wasn't really a soup. It felt more like a sauce with lots of noodles and ground beef. I ordered the dan dan noodles, cucumber salad, and pork chive dumplings. Service was good. I would have to say the dumplings are my favorite part although I got them in the dead of summer. Food was great! Reservations cannot be made so it's better to go early and get your name on the list. The silken tofu appetizer is a must try! I like how a lot of dishes can be made vegan/vegetarian. Only drawback is that the restaurant is small so they try to turn around tables quickly. read more
