I waited over $10 for only eating beans and getting a sweet tea for lunch. Puffy taco was so soggy I couldn't eat it and I asked for chicken it was given beef. The feed took so long to come to table that I couldn't send back because I would have been late going back to work. I told the head cashier and she helped by only taking off a dollar and after I left my coworker told me she shrugged her shoulders. That tells me she doesn't care. Poor customer service and not her first time. She is very unprofessional and don't know why she still there with such an attitude. I guess only towards BLACK PEOPLE! Wish I could give 0 but normally food is good but today was TRASH! I STILL PAYED AND WAS NOT LOOKING FOR A FREE MEAL! But at least charge me for what I ate for heavens sake! read more

Who doesn't love a great authentic Mexican restaurant. The Mexican decor is so beautiful and colorful. Sombreros and piñatas to cactus in the walls. A fully stocked bar, and best of all a full array freshly made pan dulce options. I ordered the combo plate which comes with two cheese enchilada, puffy taco (upgrade), beans, and cheese. So good! I could not pass up the pan dulce without grabbing a tray and grabbing some to-go items for myself and my coworkers. The Marranito was so soft and fresh. The pink cupcakes were almost as big as your face. A must stop if you are in the area. read more

Went for breakfast a couple weeks ago and had menudo, potato egg and bacon, bean and chorizo, barbacoa, and chicharron and egg tacos. We were served right away and the tacos were luke warm with the exception of the chicharron and egg. Seams like all the ingredients are premade and just put in the tortillas when ordered. The menudo was average at best. Service was ok. Too many flies around the table as well. Too many better places for breakfast in town. read more

This place serves DELICIOUS food! And can I just say that the interior theming is fantastic-- so fun and colorful! They even have a whole display case of Mexican pastries so you can take some home with you for dessert after a meal, with fun flashing multi-colored lighting. I always love how jubilant authentic places like these are-- puts a smile on my face. Our server was friendly and attentive. We didn't have to wait long to get our meals, even though there were six of us. It was hot and tasty and plentiful, especially for the reasonable price point. I put the remainder of mine in a to-go box to enjoy another day. The place was fairly filled on a Friday night, which was great to see them doing such good business (they clearly deserve it). Thankfully they have lots of tables inside to accommodate a big night's attendance. Would definitely visit this place more often if I lived closer by. I got there before the lunch rush. My order came out fast and i ordered one of the combo plates. It was missing the tamale and tortillas that were supposed to come with the plate and the beans were dry. My taco was so soggy it fell apart and I was only able to eat the meat from it. I couldn't ask about any it because after my food was brought to me, my server never came back and I couldn't take the rest of my Agua fresca to go either because I couldn't get a to go cup. I was a single female dining on my lunch break from a training on that side of town and got crappy service. Yet when I looked around, the tables of men did. Great lunch spot! All tables receive complimentary chips and salsa. I ordered the flautas plate while my husband had tacos. The server was very nice and attentive. She kept our beverages full and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. My flautas were fresh and crispy. I enjoyed the rice and ordered an extra side of salsa to dip my flautas in. You can't beat the price. My husband and I both ate for $22 before tip. We moved, so we hadn't been to Las Carretas in a while. Honestly, I had forgotten what a great place this is! Ordered my favorite, Caldo de Pollo. It was more loaded with goodness than I remembered, and the broth was a beautiful golden color, like I my grandmother's used to be. Some slight changes, like more potatoes and no corn on the cob. But that may have been due to ingredients on hand in the kitchen. The tortillas were puffier than I remembered, and so good! My mother wanted an order of shrimp cocktail, and it was loaded with shrimp! Sweet and just the right amount of spicy! On its own, it's enough for lunch with crackers or chips. The salsa was better than I remembered. The last time I went, the salsa was unpleasant due to the heat. This time, it was just right! And the chips were not too thick or too thin. Perfect for shuttling salsa or spooning shrimp into your mouth The chef even checked on our table, which was really nice considering they were pretty busy. On the way out, I loaded up on some pumpkin candy, which was still hot, and a couple of giant, pillowy sugar cookies with sprinkles. Oh my goodness, terrible, food, service and its been going downhill since the original owner(Mr.Maurillo) left it to his nephew Alfredo. Went in sat down the waitress was ok, however ther was a man sitting to our right and one to our left. This one waitress seemed to be speaking to both gentleman. It was very distracting. The entire time she went back and forth between the two gentleman. Our waitress left and seldom came to check. So we bought sweetbread then proceeded to pay. I asked the cashier if I could speak to the owner well someone girl from the back came over and I told her about about the cold food and the waitress ( tall, med built, didn't speak English very well, long black ponytail) who was going back and forth between the two gentleman. I couldn't eat due to the distraction the entire time we were there. I wasn't trying to listen, however she spoke very little English and seem to be making a deal with them. Im very disappointed with the entire experience. At checkout I ask to speak to a manager and some girl came over and ask me what the problem was so I asked her to let me speak to the manager about 3 times and she said he was busy. So I told her and after much discussion with the staff, she came over and handed me $10.00! That was adding insult to injury, so got home called for the manager and was told he was GONE! I wasn't looking for a refund of any kind, I simply just wanted to let him know about the terrible food and service and how distracted I had been when.trying to find a peaceful and delicious place as before to eat. First time eating here and was pleasantly surprised with not only the service but the quality of food was excellent. I ordered El Chef's special, it came with a crispy taco, enchilada, tamale, rice and beans as well as some chips, queso and guacamole. Honestly it was a lot of food but for the price which was quite reasonable. Also the frozen margaritas I noticed were freshly made when we ordered them (not from a machine) and were on point. I would totally recommend this place after speaking to the owner who told us he used to work at a very popular place downtown for years before opening his own restaurant. In my opinion when the owner of a place is helping serve and make drinks that tells you a lot about their work ethic and go above and beyond to make their customers not only feel welcomed but comfortable. read more

Great Enchilada meal! The Enchiladas Mexicans are a Friday only special, not for price ($10.24) but availability. They are made with queso fresco and just darn good. Lots of potatoes and carrots top off them off. The beans and rice are very good and solid accompaniments. Their corn tortillas are homemade, substantial and good for any taco on their menu. The service was good, and they kept my drink refilled and accommodated requests like extra lemon right away. The restaurant is clean, has a lot of Mexican decor, plays ranchera music in background, and there is minimal atmosphere noise. I've been coming to Las Carretas for a good long while. Sometimes their staff is rude or dismissive. I think that they're thick with the idea that "browner" people are less than. Certainly I thought so today. We had ordered tacos to go but after leaving the restaurant we realized that we didn't have them. So I went back to get them. The waitress that served us said that she didn't put in the order and therefore they weren't charged. So that's it. I don't want to put up with their lack of attention and just below the surface disdain. If you don't want to serve, go home or go wash the dishes. You weren't meant for this. Perhaps the restaurant wasn't meant for this either. What with its broken glass on the windows, you know others have felt the same way. read more

What a great find!!! Wife was looking for Caldo de Res and this popped on the Yelp closeby. Went to eat there and first thing that stood out is the customer service. Suuuuuper friendly. Now I ordered the tampiquena plate with enchiladas and we can both say both my meal and my wife's soup was really good. But what really stood out is their tortillas..in a real good way. It had this "Chalupa-fluffy" type of taste that was way different than the other tortillas you would normally get at Mexican restaurants. Definitely recommend and definitely coming back. read more

Moved into the apartments down the street and decided to give this taco spot a try. Ordered 4 chicken tacos with bacon and cheese togo and a sweet tea..Came home just to find out they didnt give me any salsa and only put the cheese and bacon on ONE taco. Not to mention the tacos were NASTY. As i was chewing i felt a piece of what i thought was bone..something hard nonetheless. The tea was more water than tea..I lost my appetite. Yikes! read more

Excellent service and food . The portions were big and it was really good food. Met my friend for brunch. We both ordered the same plate. Barbacoa and it came with a side of refried beans and potatoes and salad topped with peppers, tomatoes and sliced avocados. We got the homemade corn tortillas. They also have sweet bread (pan dulce). So we also had a concha as dessert with coffee. It was delicious. Our waitress was super friendly and funny. Excellent service. Definitely going back. Their website does say they sell liquor but they don't anymore. So don't expect margaritas. I'm perfectly fine with eating my calories instead of drinking them. read more

My husband (not vegan) also got to enjoy a huge meat filled skillet I believe called a parallada? He enjoyed his food as well! My experience here was ok. We were able to get seating right away. Our server was fantastic. The food was mediocre. I order the trio enchiladas which is probably where I went wrong. I liked the green enchilada but that overpowered the other two and so they didn't taste great. I didn't care for the cheese enchiladas either but I couldn't figure out what it was about them that I didn't care for, they just weren't great. Regarding the chips and salsa, the chips were nice and fresh but greasy, but the salsa was good. We splurged a little too much at the panaderia (not sure if that's the right term) but the prices aren't listed either so that was an easy mistake. They have a decent sized selection and the items we ordered were relatively fresh. Communication with the cashier was a struggle between not being able to hear her and our language barriers but what can you do. All in all, our server was the best part of this experience. I pass this place pretty often but didn't know about their selection of sweet breads so I'm sure I'll stop again and give them another try. read more
