We arrived a little after 10am and a wonderful gal names Natalia was eager to help us. I asked what she recommends as they have quite a few alcohol beverages. I was so excited to try this place who was part of La Cocina's incubator program that supports Women of Color to start their own business. I was in OAK at the convention center and we walked next door to Swan Market for lunch. It was a no brainer that I chose this place out of the many delicious options. First, the place is gorgeous and vibrant, with an equally amazing menu of drool worthy options. We all had a hard time choosing what to eat because it all sounded spectacular. The service was top notch and the food does take a little while to get because it isn't sitting there and they prepare your plate when you order. After much back and forth, I went with the sopes with barbacoa. Oh my, was that barbacoa flavorful and finger licking good! The meat was tender and full of spices, and the sopes (corn meal) were so crispy on the outside. The mango agua fresca felt like a little vacation in a cup. Oh, and the coyotas- OUTSTANDING! Love La Guerrera so much! It is Latina owned which is a huge plus and I was delighted that the offer chicken tamales for the holidays which has become an annual tradition for Christmas (whenever my Mexican mom isn't in town to make them for us). Their masa is legit and I absolutely love their salsa verde. Yes, they are on the pricy side for tamales but worth it for the trade off in high quality ingredients and taste if you ask me. read more

I have been meaning to try this spot for a while and am so glad I finally got the chance. I believe they are most known for their fish tacos which they do with corn tortillas or with a crunchy hard shell tortilla. I opted for the crunchy fish tacos as I don't typically see that offered on restaurant menus. The tacos were delicious - I only got 2 but definitely wish I had ordered more. I ordered two aqua fresca - fresa con menta and mango pina. The fresa con menta was tart and has so many seeds. The mango pina was super thick but I really liked the flavor. The Pescadilla was SO GOOD. The hard shell taco was so crispy - probably the best hard shell taco I've ever had. I had also ordered the pork enchilado & pineapple taco, it was so tasty and loved the pineapples inside! By the time I ordered - all the tamales were almost sold out. I stopped by this restaurant on a Saturday morning to order some Chilaquiles and sopas to go. The restaurant is inside of the Swan market, which has a very nice atmosphere . The food was amazing! There was plenty of seating inside and outside, likely due to it being a weekday. Im sure the weekend is a different story. This is located in Swans Market in Old Oakland. It's a must try if your in the area and need a move hearty lunch. Lines get a little long at lunch time but the staff keeps things moving. They have family style tables to sit in. You walk up to the counter, place an order and then wait just a few minutes for deliciousness to be served! They make great Tacos. I didn't have those today as I needed my Chicken Pozole fix! It's a green Pazole packed with chicken and hominy. It's so comforting and delicious. They give you condiments to go along with it. Radish, onions, jalapeño, cabbage and some really nice chilly oil. The oil gives a kick but not a mouth burner. Every time I eat this soup I want to crawl up on my couch and just chill afterward. It's perfect for a chilly rainy day! However, I've come to realize if I need my fix I'll eat this soup if it's 90 degrees outside lol! The staff here is great. 4.5 stars The barbacoa was savory and delicious and the enchilado (basically al pastor) was one of the better versions that can be had in the bay area imho. This is what replaced Cosecha. Although the pork belly taco from Cosecha is one of the best tacos I've ever had, this place fills their shoes nicely. I have heard the tamales are great so I may get one of those next. The only reason that I gave them 4.5 stars instead of 5 is that I don't think they are the best value. Not safe for food allergies! Not safe for celiac, not safe if you're gluten free. I ordered delivery from here, and only selected items that were marked as not containing gluten on the menu. I marked each item in the order as "gluten free for a gluten allergy". They went ahead and included empanadas that were not GF in my order, and the only indication was a tiny hand written note on the receipt which I didn't see until after I had finished my order and was throwing out the packaging. This restaurant does not follow food allergy instructions, and the food was not good enough to be sick for weeks for. When I arrived they were very much in business but the girl who attended me said that since the order was placed prior to opening, they wouldn't be able to fulfill my order. With fish, it's typically a deep-fried slab with Mayo. This was something else. The grilled white fish was so delicious I wish I ordered another. *** Review during COVID-19 pandemic, outdoor dining *** I had searched for "best chicken recipes" and came across an article titled "the chicken recipe that changed my life" by a journalist for Food & Wine Magazine. The article featured five restaurants (2 in the bay area / 3 in NYC), one of them being La Guerrera's which spotlighted their chicken mole. I wholeheartedly agree with the writer because "HOLY MOLE"..... this dish is AH-MAZING! But I'll get to that in a minute. La Guerrera's is a family owned / run business with a small storefront. Due to the pandemic, there currently is no indoor dining. However you can order take out and dine at home, or grab one of the two bright turquoise tables right on the sidewalk, which we did. We ordered the following: Puerco Taco (pork) - YUM! This taco is full of flavor... especially love the citrusy zing of the pineapple salsa. Ordering again, for sure! Pork in Salsa Roja Tamale - Unfortunately, the tamale was "just okay" for us. The maza was really thick and the filling on the dry side. We plan on trying a different tamale the next time we visit. Chicken Mole Rojo - I'll say it again... HOLY MOLE! This dish blew our minds! And we immediately got lost in the depth of flavors... smokey, velvety, spicy, warm, addicting. We drizzled the mole sauce over the rice, dipped the corn tortillas in it, and even drizzled some on the tamale. The two chicken drumsticks, drenched in the mole sauce, were quite tender... meat falling off the bone. We will return to La Guerrera's over and over and over again... JUST.FOR.THE.CHICKEN.MOLE. Homemade chips & salsa - Okay.... I'm sure you're wondering why we ordered chips & salsa. In fact, after I ordered it, I wondered the same. La Guerrera's is following all CAL-Osha guidelines to ensure the safety of their staff and customers. There are two small 2-tops right outside their entrance for customers... which they fully disinfect after each use. Easy parking as there is a lot right next to them. This is centrally located in downtown oakland and is a large outdoor/indoor eating area with several options. It gets busy at lunch so get there early! I had the barbacoa plate and chips. The meat was cooked perfectly. There's a large selection of drinks and agua frescas. Definitely a huge recommendation if you're looking for a lunch spot in oakland. This little gem is located inside Swan's market. If you come any day except Friday's for lunch seating is fairly easy to find. You order in the front and take a seat in any open seating. Water is self serve and you return your dishes once you're done with your meal. I ordered a few items to try out: Taco's Pescado - Generous amount per taco,loved the flavors and the fish! Mango Shrimp Ceiviche - Suprisingly they gave a nice heaping amount but the chips do not match up to the ceiviche. You'll need to order more (and they are not free). Wish there were more protein inside but other than that it was good. Fried Plantains - exactly how you imagine it to taste if you've ever had it. Good, but I felt their crema was too watery. Chicken Pozole - I have not had verde in a long time and I do miss it. Loved the flavor, tons of hominy. It doesnt have a lot of meat which I am fine with. But for the meat seekers this may not be the dish for you. Guava Cookie - I was a little skeptical at first but I definetly liked it and would like to try the other flavors next time. La Guerrera's Kitchen is a solid lunch and brunch place in Swan's Market. I've had their tacos before (mole plantain and a pollo one back in the day) and tasted great. This was my first time trying their brunch menu, where they sell chilaquiles verdes and mole rojo. If you like runny sauce and less spicy, go with their chilaquiles verdes. But the mole rojo was exactly what I wanted! Probably considered spicy for people who are sensitive, but it was the right amount of heat for me, and you could really get the deep flavors. The way they make their Chilaquiles is also the exact way I like them: just a little wet, but firm enough to where you can still get a crunch from the chips. I also think that they ask you how you like your eggs done. I did mine over easy. Will definitely be back whenever I have a chilaquiles craving! read more

I don't know how I haven't left a review for La Guerrera's Kitchen, as I've certainly enjoyed their food from each location they've been at. I first learned of the awesome tamales being slung by Reyna and her mom Ofelia from one of my friends who recently moved out of Oakland while visiting The Aloha Club. From there I've followed and dined at their location on 8th (the old Loncheria) and now at Swan's Marketplace. My favorite dish hands down is their chicken mole. Followed by their fish taco. But there has not been one thing I didn't fully enjoy from their menu. There's definitely items I wish they had on their daily menu like chicken mole tamales and steak and chile rellano taco. The masa in their tamales is so smooth and delicious which is why time after time I've recommended this place. If you live or work in the area definitely add this place to your rotation.
