An alright restaurant. I heard a lot of praise that the food here is very authentically made. While it doesn't taste bad by any means, I feel like some dishes don't taste the way that I am used to. The basil fried rice in particular didn't have that strong basil flavor that I usually get. I also had the roti (delicious), chicken satay, char kway teow, curry laksa, basil fried rice, and chicken rendang. The entrees in particular didnt strike me as anything super exciting. I definitely think the appetizers were very good though. Restaurant is very small on the inside and you get rushed out when its dinner time. They deleted my Google review! Very rude host :( we arrived at around 7pm last Thursday without a reservation. White male host with a beard said two bar seats are opening up soon and asked us to wait outside and he"ll come grab us. Great, we were excited. Not even 5 minutes later, we saw the two promised bar seats handed to another couple who arrived after us. We went back to the host and asked what happened. He sounded rude and tried to deflect: claiming the OTHER two bar seats are also wrapping up soon and those will be ours. That didn't sound right. We pressed again and he admitted that the other two bar seats are only in the middle of their entree so it wouldn't be ready for another 30 mins. wtf. We asked why did you give our seats to people who arrived afterwards? now he starts bullshitting and said they mixed up a reservation and was a "misunderstanding". Yea sure, great excuse bro. Zero customer service and no apology. Host was non chalant the entire time. Roti Canai - nothing special on the Roti but the current dip was amazing Soft Shell Crab - had high expectations for this one but was slightly disappointed as the soft shell crab wasn't crispy and the sauce was very sour. Fantastic food. There are not that many Malaysian restaurants around the area and their roti canai is amazing. So are their incredible lunch offerings. I have been there more than once and every time as far as food goes, they knock it out of the park. But service is always so spotty. It is like they forgot they seated you and then they forget that they fed you. I even got up and got my own water since they didn't care to bring me some! All of which were delicious but of all, I would recommend the roti canai and rendang curry for sure. Both were so flavorful and spicy but in a good way - flavor spicy vs. burn your mouth spicy. Tasty Malaysian food near Union Square Park . Came here on New Year's Eve and it was crowded! Tables are close together. Service is really fast and polite. Definitely get Roti Canai to start , that's the tasty bread with dipping sauce. The Sotong Goreng Calamari is spicy hot and flavorful. The veggie dumplings were my favorite. My friend had Beef Rendang, their famous dish and he said it was substantial with a lot of beef . I think that's a drier type curry. I had Malaysian Curry with tofu and veggies but would try Massaman or Green curry next time. They have noodle dishes too. I miss Singaporean food so much and so was very excited to try this place out! Came here with a dinner reservation on a weekday and would definitely recommend booking something beforehand because the place was very full. I ordered the Ultimate Curry Laksa with Shrimp and it was very good. I really appreciate the noodles that took in all of the rich broth with flavors that were spot on. I also really liked the deep fried tofu which may or may not be my favorite of the dish. I do have to say that the dish was quite expensive ($23) and although the place does have a good vibes, a bit loud but regardless, I maybe would go to a cheaper Malaysian restaurant in NYC (maybe Malaysia Grill in UWS) for the same dish. I don't think the flavors stood out that much to warrant the price although the quantity was very filling. Overall, solid place for Singaporean food. Had high expectations because I think Laut was recommended by Michelin guide but what a disappointment! I have to note that the restaurant itself looks really nice and is well decorated-- this was probably my favorite part of the dining experience. My friend and I ordered the nasi lemak and Singapore soft shell chili crab. Both these dishes ended up being less than impressive. The nasi lemak didn't have as much flavor as nasi lemak I've had at small hole in the wall Malaysian restaurants and every component of it seemed to be flavored the same way, whereas I've found that there is usually a contrast so that the dish has a lot of flavor dimension when eaten altogether. The soft shell chili crab was actually really bad. The sauce tasted like very gelatinous super sweet ketchup and nothing else. It was so sweet that I felt like every time I took a bite it left a film in my mouth. I didn't want to eat any more after my first bite but because it was expensive my friend and I tried to eat as much as we could, but still ended up leaving a lot. For a restaurant that is quite pricey, this meal was a huge let down. I don't see myself coming back or recommending laut to anyone. read more

This place is excellent for vegans with lots of options and great for meat eaters also. I loved the bok choi with sambal , the mango salad and the vegan Char Kway Teow. I'd bookmarked this restaurant for a number of years and was happy to finally make it here on my recent visit to NYC but even tho the Assam Laksa was one of the best I've eaten, the service and potentially 'error' from the staff is prompting me to write a review. I walked in without reservation at 6.20pm on a Wednesday and asked for a table for 1 and was told it would be 20-25 minutes wait. I was added to the list and despite not receiving by a text that my table was ready, I came back to check at 7pm and was told the people have paid and I just needed them to vacate the table. The next 30 minutes that i stood outside waiting, lots of people left the restaurant and other groups were seated while I was still left waiting. At around 7.30 I was finally seated. Enjoyed my food and drink and paid with my Apple Pay (which involved pressing preset buttons on the gadget). I am now discovering that I was somehow charged/prompted to tip $20 on a $50 bill. Is there a minimum tip/surcharge for being a lone diner on top of being made to wait extra long for my table? How can a preset button have resulted in a 41% tip? Something is not adding up. The space was a little small and I had to squeeze into my seat at our table which was so close to the table next to us. I'm ashamed I never knew about this place until recently. Came here with a group when a friend suggested it as an early dinner before an event. These days, I feel like Kopitiam gets the most press and local love from a Malaysian restaurant standpoint. However, Laut's been around for a long time and actually earned a Michelin star years ago - and I can say the food there is still banging. The roti canai as a starter was excellent - soft pull apart bread dipped in a super rich curry. The rice in the nasi lemak was perfect. The rendang was a sublime flavor punch. Roti Canai was delicious, nothing wrong it was actually so good-- just very pricey Family satay (forgot to take a pic before eating) comes with 4 chicken satay, 4 chicken tandoori, 3 tofu satay. I liked the chicken satay the best! But flavor wise everything was pretty good. It's definitely more worth it getting this than things separately. Okay this restaurant is pretty solid but it's very expensive. If you're looking to splurge on Malaysian food, Laut is not a bad option. My friend and I came in at around 7:30 PM on a Wednesday and we were seated immediately without a reservation. To start, we shared the "Satay Tandoori" appetizer which came with four skewers. It had a nice and spicy kick; my friend likes this one better than the regular satay chicken because of the extra spice. Definitely squeeze a generous amount of lime juice onto the skewers to get a sweet, citrusy flavor. The chicken itself was juicy and tender. We also shared the "Nasi Lemak" which had both curry chicken and sambal shrimp - super SPICY and flavorful. Emphasis on the SPICY!! Get a big spoonful of the meat, pickled vegetables, peanuts, anchovy, and coconut rice and you'll get so many different flavors and textures all at once. The coconut rice was a bit mushy and lacked coconut flavor - still enjoyable with the rest of the meal. I loved the simple seasoning on the peanuts and anchovies (both very crunchy and crispy!). The portion was pretty big but damn, it really shouldn't be $25. In Malaysia, this entree is around $5 USD (usually cheaper than this, but I'm overestimating here). I get that the entree is elevated here, but marking it up 5x higher is a bit ridiculous. My friend got the "Mango with Sweet Sticky Rice" dessert which is a SE Asian classic. The presentation was beautiful - the mango was sliced and shaped like a rose sitting on top of blue sticky rice. We both thought the mango wasn't very ripe, which took away a lot of the juicy mango flavor which is usually in the dessert. The sticky rice had a nice and chewy consistency, but lacked the flavor of coconut milk. The mango cream was pretty delicious! Overall, the dessert was not bad. read more

The garlic butter crab is 5/5, the laksa is 4/5, and the rendang is like 3/5 if I'm feeling generous so this place is really more a 3.5/5. I decided to go down on the rating instead as I wouldn't really see this as a place I'd be returning again. Inside is actually a lot smaller than I anticipated, so the tables are pretty tight. Service is friendly enough, but nothing outstanding. Garlic Butter Crab $21: you definitely need to get this is you do happen to end up here! Maybe because I haven't had soft shelled crab in a while, but these deliciously crispy bites of fried goodness were so soft and buttery. Loved that pop of piping hot crab meat when I bit into these, and the crunchy bites plus the fried basil leaves that I couldn't help eating with my rice from another dish. Curry Laksa Noodles: I've had a lot of laksas before that's never really managed to hit that right combination of coconutty plus spice level, but this place pretty much nailed that. Very creamy, strong coconut flavor, along with a gooood kick. Personally for me, I would've enjoyed even more spice, but it's good as it is. The toppings are a bit skimpy, plus the tofu puffs were super hard instead of counting on it to rely on soaking in all that nice broth. The famous beef rendang is really the most disappointing of items ordered. While the flavor is not bad, it was really the sweetness of the beef that ruined it for me. Not spicy and sweet...just sweet beef. The cut of meat used also isn't very fatty, so I was deprived of having melty bites of beef rendang with my rice :( Could be more tender as well. The Pad Thai alone may have been acceptable with chicken or shrimp but the pieces of beef were so low grade that they could not be chewed, barely even cut with a knife...if you want to try this Malaysian cuisine make sure you don't order anything where the main protein is Laut's beef. read more

Top notch Malaysian restaurant with great food and atmosphere! I ordered the Mamak Mee Goreng with mixed seafood ($23)- the egg noodles were excellent with the perfect chewiness and umami flavor. The other ingredients (seafood, tofu, veggies, etc.) brought the dish up to its full potential. I also tried the Ultimate Curry Laksa which had a very authentic coconut curry broth to go with the noodles ($19 with chicken). For dessert, we got the Coconut Pudding, which was uniquely presented, as the pudding (which was light and made from real coconut) filled the inside of a coconut. $15 was justified for this considering the large size (adequate for 2 people). The interior is decorated in the style of a nice Malaysian street market, with paint decor along the exposed brick walls and street signs poking out of them. The service was fantastic, as our waitress offered to move us out of the cold outdoors to the inside without us even asking. The service speed was also pretty quick. Overall, it's hard to complain about Laut, as the food, service, and interior environment are all really great. First time trying Malaysian/Singaporean food and it was a pleasant experience. I came on a weeknight and it got crowded around 6-7pm. Ordered the Crispy Small Bites Combo to share (2/5- decent portion and nice to try different things but the fish balls and veggie spring rolls were not great). Nothing really stood out on this appetizer plate. For our entrees, we ordered the Nasi Lemak (4/5) and the Char Kway Teow (4/5). The Nasi Lemak was interesting since it was a sampling of 4 dishes. The only thing I didn't really enjoy was that the egg was super overcooked (I don't know if that's how it's supposed to be in Malaysian/Singaporean dishes). The Char Kway Teow honestly tasted like Drunken Noodles so didn't see any difference in terms of taste for this restaurant. Lastly, for dessert, we ordered the Mango Sticky Rice (3/5). The presentation was beautiful (rose-shaped), but I was not a fan of the mango syrup sauce that it came in. It was way too sweet and took away from the sticky rice/mango combo. The food and service were good overall but I did not appreciate that the waitress took away my food twice before I was finished. Isn't it standard etiquette to ask a customer if they are done before taking things away? She took away the sauce that came with the appetizer before I was finished (still had food on my plate), and she also took away the dessert before I was completely finished (had a few bites left). They have laksa that can be made vegan and that is all I care about! Super delicious creamy coconutty vegan laksa. The most similar I have found to Singapore in the US that is also vegan. My friend and I came around 5 pm with a reservation. She ordered their signature dish nasi lemak (famous curry chicken) while I ordered spicy night market fried rice. I ordered mine because I was curious about how rice cooked for over four hours with spicy sambal would taste...we always talk about how it's good to order food that is too effortful to make at home, and let me tell you, it is a MOUTHWATERING experience. I thought it would be more basic but the spice is not overpowering but balances out well with the vegetables inside the rice dish. I don't know how they did this but it tastes excellent. I would say that if you want a quieter dining experience to come at off peak hours since by the time we left, we noticed that the restaurant was louder than we liked. I came to Laut with some of my coworkers on a Thursday during lunch, and we were able to get seating inside. In order to dine in, you have to present your COVID-19 vaccination card. I loved the interior decorations and paintings on the wall. The restaurant was very dim and I really liked the atmosphere of the place. I ordered the Noodle Soup with Curry Laksa broth. It was my first time having Curry Laksa, and it was very delicious! The broth was very flavorful and creamy. I was worried that it'll be too spicy since it did say "medium spice" on the menu. However, I didn't find it too spicy and the little hint of spice added lots of flavor to the soup. I also got the Roti Canai and Chicken Skewers as appetizers. Both were extremely delicious and I would highly recommend them. Overall, I had a very positive experience with the restaurant. This was my first time coming to Laut and i highly recommend coming here especially on a chilly day. The broth of the curry laksa was creamy and savoury, my friend ordered it with chicken and egg noodle to be the perfect comfort food on a cold day. I ordered the satay chicken and it was juicy and perfectly cooked, the sauce on top was sweet and had good texture from the crushed peanuts, pairing well w the refreshing cucumber and a sharp bite of onion. The aromatic coconut rice was cooked well, not being sticky and having the right amount of coconut flavour. I think for the roti canai i should've requested it to be spicier but it was still delicious. My favourite part of this meal was the mango sticky rice for dessert! it wasn't too sweet and the mango was ripe and fresh. Overall the service was great, our waters were always full and all the staff were attentive to our needs. The music in the restaurant isn't too loud so you can still have a conversation but the tables are pretty close together.
