FINALLY made it here after the rennovations and was looking forward to trying this place after hearing about told one and never having gone. I thought it was a solid meal and of course super affordable. We got a whole bunch of things, including skewers, beef chow fun and of course the beef rendang. As far as rendang goes, it was authentic and scratched that itch. While I don't know if it's making any "best rendang in the city" list it's a solid rendang that stands on its own. Definitely keeping this in mind when I want Malaysian food, especially since it's a hard cuisine to find and hope that they continue to see success. We also had the shaved ice which was decorated with corn and red bean, and while it isn't the most dessert-looking item, it was actually quite yummy and one of the highlights of our meal!

The old New Malaysia shop used to be under the old Jing Fong dimsum/wedding venue in a long, thin alleyway tunnel between the major streets. Now they've moved into a shiny, new spot on Bayard, and the atmosphere here is cozy and bright all at once. Their specialties like roti canai and their curry beef are still very good - though the curry flavor is almost the same, it's a little different thickness when taking it home. Best to eat it there! Prices have gone up, though, no surprise there.

Vegetable stuffed with fish paste curry stew

I've been eating at this restaurant, from time to time, over the past 20 years. My bro in law misses the bigger menu that included honey glazed steak with fried rice. One of my faves that is still in the menu is the curry stew, could be the curry chicken or the curry beef or the stews in a bowl...still delicious!! Recently, I ordered vegetables stuffed with fish paste curry stew. I just wish there's a curry stew with both protein and vegetables. My friend ordered the beef curry stew which didn't have any veggies. Despite the facts, I'll be getting here again. The place is clean, never had issues with the food, the staff are responsive and the bathroom is clean. I wish them lots of business in their smaller space!

This was my first time trying Malaysian food, and wow, did I pick a great spot. Every dish I had was amazing, especially the beef curry and roti. The beef curry had amazing flavor, and the beef was cooked perfectly, as it was extremely tender and would almost just melt in your mouth. The roti was also great. The flaky, buttery bread was divine, and the sauce on the side was delicious, with tender pieces of chicken inside. The aromatic shrimp was great as well. While the first two dishes I would definitely get again, I would maybe try something else in place of the aromatic shrimp next time. The atmosphere was comfortable, and the service was fast and efficient. I highly recommend this place!

Delicious This is one of the best Malaysian restaurants in NYC. Portions are decent. Service is great. Quick and casual dining place for friends and families. Definitely must go.

Came by for a quick meal on a weekday afternoon. Came with a party of 4, no wait and our food came out relatively quick. We were in and out of the restaurant within an hour. I think depending on what you're ordering you might have a slightly different experience. I was craving for the Crispy Fish Head w. Preserved Vegetables Noodles Soup, but it was a bit too sweet for my liking since I was hoping more of a sourish balance. They were able to cut out roti canai into smaller pieces which was great.

    Hainanese Chicken on Rice
    Kayla N.

Came here craving something comforting and warm with all the snow and ordered the Hainanese chicken with Hainanese-style rice, and it hit exactly the spot! This is the kind of dish that seems so simple on the surface but really depends on execution - and West New Malaysia does it well. The chicken was tender and juicy, with a clean, comforting flavor that didn't need to be overly dressed up. The rice was also soft, fluffy, and fragrant, with a subtle but noticeable depth of flavor that made it enjoyable even on its own. The accompanying sauces really brought everything together. The vinegar chili dipping sauce was especially memorable as it was bright, tangy, and perfectly acidic, adding a refreshing contrast to the richness of the chicken and rice. It was the kind of sauce that instantly wakes up your palate and makes each bite feel balanced rather than heavy. The scallion oil was also spot on, fragrant and savory without being overwhelming, and added another layer of richness to the dish. Portion-wise, everything felt generous without being excessive, and the meal as a whole was incredibly satisfying in that cozy, comfort-food way. Overall, this was a very solid meal that delivered exactly what it promised: comforting, well-executed food with thoughtful flavors! I'd definitely return and explore more of the menu, but this Hainanese chicken is absolutely worth ordering.

If you come here, you have to try their drinks and desserts. I loved everything I ordered today: jicama fries, indian mee goreng, vegetable dish. The soya drink is tasty and shaved ice with cendol i really love it.

We've eaten here twice. Not easy when you visit Chinatown and not end up eating Chinese as one might think. But in reality, there are many Chinese dishes, as well as Indian and Thai dishes, in their menu. This is so as part of the ethnic make-up in Malaysia. Curry Beef Brisket Rice $12.95. Beef was tender and the curry had a lot of depth. Very safe dish. Recommended. Panang Asam Laksa $14.95. This vegetarian dish had a lot of onion and overall too sweet for my liking. Definitely pass. Hokkien Mee $14.95. This is a Chinese dish as Hokkien is a province in China. I've never had this. It's a stir-fried but soupy udon noodle dish with shrimps, squid and pork. Udon was soggy; otherwise okay. Not much character but not bad at all. Capitan Noodle $14.95. This is like a soupy version of Chinese chow fun. Same protein mix as Hokkien Mee. The flat noodle was too soggy, a let down. Indian Mee Goreng $14.95. This is an Indian version of pad Thai but with egg noodle and a bit of spiciness. Good dish. Everything was on point. The exterior is different enough to stand out, with a bit of Western vibe. The interior setup is charming and current. Service was on point. Despite some misses in a few dishes, we plan to come back again. This restaurant feels approachable in terms of ambiance, food choices, and price point.

    Beef Rendang
    Wendy B.

Good varieties. $15 corkage fee. Favs - Crispy Prawn w/ Salted Egg . YUM, 5 giant prawn. General Tso's Chicken , no judgement it was pretty decent. Kang Kung Belacan Water Spinach, ON POINT. Mid yet okayed - Curry Bricket Beef Over Rice Combo ($11.95) meat is very fatty otherwise the flavor is great.. make sure it's the combo as the portion is quite big already. Beef Rendang- okayed. Our lease fav - Malay Fried Rice just kinda bland. Indian Mee Goreng was worse than instant noodle version... Ugh Over satisfying and will come back!

Go to Malaysian spot since the "tunnel" Their roti canal is not what they used to be - frozen style now. But everything else is pretty similar like their stuffed curry noodles and stir fry.

    Curry chicken with broad noodles
    Wen Na Z.

First time back since their relocation, and glad to say the taste hasn't changed. My go-to dish is their curry chicken with broad noodles. No frills, just solid comfort food.

    Tony Y.

West New Malaysia has been in Chinatown since it was in the "tunnel." I'm actually surprised I haven't reviewed these guys sooner given the many years I've eaten here and taken out. The food here is solid and so is this service. We ordered a medley of things tonight but my favorite was definitely the egg gravy flat noodles and the salt and pepper squid. Their roti canai is the only thing I'd say is disappointing. Not the it tastes bad, but that it resembles the ones you get from the frozen aisle at the supermarket. Definitely a great spot for Malaysian food. And they take credit card unlike their competition.
