The vibe is super casual and the tables are quite close together, but it's not the type of place you would sit at for a long time because of the street food stall vibe. The food surpassed my expectations based on the overall Yelp rating. The drinks and service were quite good as well. Chicken satay - Delicious sauce generously drizzled over soft chicken skewers. I liked it more than Nonya's or even Satay Street in Singapore. The sauce is less heavy on peanut flavor if that's your preference. Hainanese roasted chicken rice - We'd never had the roasted version before but the chicken was very soft and the portion was generous. The rice was also very flavorful. The sauces were already mixed in for you and it was definitely a great mix of flavors. This place has been on my list for quite awhile so I jumped at the chance to try it when my friend suggested we eat here. We opted for outdoor dining, which was lovely. There was greenery, flowers, twinkle lights all around us. The interior looked grown up and sexy with dim lighting, glass partitions, and beautiful artwork on the brick walls. For my drink, I was having a hard time deciding between Pulled Tea and Iced White Coffee. I went for the Ice White Coffee (even though the Pulled Tea is probably more authentic and unique), which contained milk, sugar, served with sweetened condensed milk. This drink came in a tall glass with crushed ice. The White Coffee was delightfully sweet and creamy, as well as refreshing. As for my entrée, I ordered the recommended Nasi Lemak, which included several signature Malaysian dishes: Rendang Curry Chicken, Shrimp in sambal sauce, Coconut Rice, pickled vegetables, peanuts, anchovy (which I picked off), and broiled egg. I really enjoyed the variety of this delicious meal! The Rendang Curry Chicken was wonderfully tender with flavorful seasoning and spices. The savory sauce was full of bold curry flavor without being too spicy. Shrimp in sambal sauce was succulent and juicy. The pickled vegetables were perfectly crunchy with a decent amount of light citrus taste. Coconut rice was fragrant with coconut and just the right soft, fluffy texture. My friend had the Hainanese Roast Chicken Rice, which I also got to try. The dish consisted of crispy Chinese style chicken with bone, secret soy sauce with chili sauce. This was really yummy, and it was definitely that sauce that made the already fall off the bone chicken stand out even more. I also went for the Mango with Sweet Sticky Rice dessert. This looked different than the typical plating, but was quite scrumptious. There was mango juice, a mixture of black and white sticky rice, mango slices arranged in a shape of a flower, along with black and regular sesame seeds sprinkled on top. My friend and I made reservations for 6 pm on a Friday and got seated outdoors in their heated dining area. The beef had a slight kick to it that warmed you up in the chilly weather. Meat was tender and melts in your mouth. The pad sew ee had good flavor. Whatever sweet soy sauce they used meshed well with the cooking. Only con is there were only a few slices of beef. The whole meal was quite average. Nothing stood out in a positive or negative way. Some nice onion flavor, there were nice large pieces of chicken that weren't tough. But the flavor mellows out and becomes shallow as you keep eating. The rice was too watery. Prices are reasonable for what you get - between $20-25 for the average dish. They do get a bit expensive with the traditional Malaysian dishes which is why I went non-Malaysian this time around. The waitress recommends the Nasi Lemak and the Hainanese Roast Chicken Rice, neither of which I tried (probably mistakenly). The ambiance is dark, colorful. It reminds me of being on the streets in Asia at night. Payment is done at the table with a card reader (tap capable). 18% minimum tip. Sadly after many years my rating has only gone down for this place. Though I will say the food I tried this time was significantly better but the hygiene and specially the service was disappointing . They have a very depressing and shabby outdoor seating area. He swiped my card and told me that I'm only allowed to pick 18 pct, 20pct or 25 pct tip option, nothing less than that. Well I'm not new in the city and I do not support entitled servers who don't care about doing their job. I still tipped him 15 pct though in my eyes he deserved NOTHING. This has been my consistent gripe with many restaurants in the city. Do teach your staff the importance of good customer experience, it's just not about having a great chef. We got two appetizers and 4 different entrees: Satay Chicken $14 - My personal favorite. The chicken was super moist and flavorful and the sauce was a great addition to it. I wanted it as an entree! This is the best Malaysian food I've had, and one of my new favorite restaurants. Feels like a good, home cooked meal that is absolutely delicious, but served in a nice atmosphere. I took my friend visiting the city here, and she said it was the best food she's eaten during her entire trip. Good, authentic south east asian food. Highly recommend coming here. Roti Canai: a little sweeter than I wanted but still very good, and made with many thin layers, delicious curry to dip it in on the side Curry Laksa: get this dish. My cousin and I decided to try this place last week, and it was SENSATIONAL! We had an 8:15 reservation, which I made over the phone, and the person I spoke to was very accommodating. Drinks and food were a little on the pricey side (The wine we ordered for $65 retails for $12 in your local liquor store) but whatever, it's Union Square. I got the Hakka Crispy Chicken and my cousin got the Hainanese Roast Chicken (basic, and yes, I'm self-judging) and they were delicious! My dish was slightly spicy, crispy, flavorful, and filling. I generally don't like Southeast Asian foods (eg. Thai, Singapore, and Malaysian), because they are way too salty. Everything is like being soaked in salt, and always make me feel very thirsty after eating. Just like most traditional Southeast Asian foods, Laut also has this shortcoming. However, within all Southeast Asian foods that I've tried, Laut is the best. My favorite things are the chili crab and the Nasi Lemak. Both of them are amazing! The coconut taste in the Nasi Lemak was unbelievable! I don't like to eat rice usually, but I love this one! Satay chicken was also very nice, especially after eating something spicy - the subtle sweetness was refreshing. The dish that I like the least was the papaya salad. That was not papaya at all - at least not the usual papaya in our commonsense. The sauce was weird too. The service was ok. However, a downside was that they didn't have the desserts that we wanted to order. I would want to order the coconut pudding, but they said they were still making it... and our second choice was durian ice cream - they didn't have it either. It was 5pm on Sunday... I think they should've had it prepared by this time. Anyway, we ordered the mango sticky rice. Not good at all. The condition of the mango was not good. And the sticky rice was way too sweet. We made reservation a week in advance since they have limited capacity. We arrived slightly early and decided to have some cocktail first. I chose Kuala Lumpur a vodka based drink with lychee, hibiscus and lime dry curaçao, we then paired it with crispy small bites combo of fried wonton, veggie dumplings, spring rolls and fish balls. They have really captured the Asian street food on this platter. For our main entree we started with a bottle Cabernet Sauvignon with Soteng Goreng (fried calamari) sprinkled with spices. We then shared Hainanese roast chicken rice; crispy roast Chinese chicken style served with chicken broth and chicken rice and their famous beef rendang "CNN's world's 50 best food" 2017; a caramel dry curry with exotic Asian spices served with jasmine rice. Both dishes are flavorful but I found the Hainanese chicken the real deal since it came with side dishes that complemented one another. One of my favorite NYC restaurants! Super vegetarian friendly. It's family friendly as well! The service is AMAZING! They genuinely want you to have a good night which I really appreciate. The food is so tasty! It seems like noodles are easily found in nyc at other restaurants but this restaurant KNOWS how to do tasty amazing food! I am vegetarian and I had a great experience as well. The Laksa was hot and soothing, and went well with the thin rice noodles and brown rice. The veggie momos were nothing to write home about, and the spicy nightmarket noodles, pad sew and bok choi stir fry were all fairly average, they came out rather lukewarm. Laut is somewhere between 4 and 5 stars, a GREAT option for Malaysian food. We loved everything we ordered, but the standout was definitely the assam laksa. It's a very unique, authentic Malaysian dish with a HEAVY fish flavor, but when I tried it at Laut, it transported me right back to when I had it a few years ago in Malaysia. Loved it. Props to the chef for this one. Service and ambiance were great - more nice casual than upscale with indoor and outdoor seating. May have a bit of a wait but worth it! read more
