I've stopped by Layer Cake from time to time, and I do say its either hit or miss with some of their items. While everything has that "made from scratch" and "homemade" taste to it, some of the things need a bit more practice I think. I would recommend trying the tart tatin or the almond croissant. These are very good here. All in all, I think Layer Cake is one of the better patiseries in Irvine... you can really taste the TLC (tender loving care) that goes into each item. read more

I walked in here a couple of weeks ago to order some macaroons for my sister's birthday. I walked in and saw they were fully stocked of many different flavors. My first mistake was telling the girl, "Give me 2 of each flavor." I didn't really look at the price and figured there were about 10 flavors. My second mistake was picking up the gingerbread cookies for the boyfriend. Again, I didn't look at the price, but thought, "These probably cost about $4." I dunno what happened to the chick getting the macaroons because it must've taken her what seemed like 1/2 an hour to box those suckers. Anyway, she finally rings me up and tells me the total. I really didn't think much about this place or even wanted to give it four stars on this review, because initially the experience I had with Layer Cake, didn't leave me with a good impression. However, after reading another Yelper's review on their macaroons, I had to try it myself and wanted to review only for their macaroons as I see fit. These macaroons, are not just the coconut triangle sweets, the macaroons I found to love are round with different flavors. I first had them in SF and even though I see some here and there, they were not the same or taste nearly as good as the ones in SF which I crave for. When I saw and read they had the macaroons I adore at Layer Cake Bakery, I knew it was time to go back and see if it measures up. At $1.50 a piece, I bought 4 different flavors; pistachio, pumpkin, caramel butter cream and boysenberry. Hubby and I took the first bite of the pistachio and looked at each other with our joyful expressions and said "YUM". We couldn't resist, and after the pistachio, we went on with the boysenberry and two hours later it was onto the pumpkin and finishing off with the caramel butter cream. The macaroons were perfectly made; thin crispy layer on the outside, inner soft inside and the silky cream in the middle. I went there around 3:30 PM and 4 flavors were already out so neat-less to say, I'll be going back to try their other flavors. Oh man, I am so disappointed in the macarons! I went to pick up a gift box on christmas eve. I was so excited that they were opened and headed over to pick up a few to gift to a friend for the holidays. Luckily, my friend immediately opened the box and wanted to share with me. EVERY SHELL WAS HOLLOW. The consistency was all wrong and they weren't crispy, chewy and delightful as they should be. I've dabbled in making macarons and the signs of a bad macaron include hollow shells, cracked shells, no feet. For almost $2 for one, I'd better have a damn perfect macaron - and I didn't. LCB has been my go to bakery for many years now. Liz transformed my ideas into a cake for my husband's 40th and I was sold! She has helped make my son's 10th Birthday cake a hit. That success made my friends a repeat customer here too, for many years now. And am back again here for my daughter's birthday cakes. Liz was open to going the extra mile and considerate to work within my limitations and preferences. Macarons = heavenly! I was craving a macaron and wasn't sure where I could find one around here! So I Yelped, of course, and found this which is very near both my work and home. I figured I'd stop by after work and give it a shot, check it out, perhaps quell my craving. Walking in, I was greeted by a couple of young ladies behind the counter. It looked clean and tidy as well as smelled delicious! Looking to my left, I saw what I came for!! Tons of adorable macarons! I checked out the options and decided I'd get a bunch of different maca's (2 chocolate for my bf) I ended up with Strawberry, Hazelnut, Chocolate, Raspberry Chocolate, Lemon, Pistachio and Mango. My ULTIMATE favorite was the Mango!!! So much flavor!! Yummy :) I didn't eat them right away, I threw them into the fridge (I know, how could I resist? I have no idea!) I liked the slightly crispy exterior but it didn't break apart into pieces when I bit into it. The interior is chewy and soft and VERY flavorful! I'll definitely go back and SOON! A bit pricey per Macaron ($1.60) BUT what are you gonna do? Can't find them just anywhere and I sure as heck can't bake them. (You ever see a recipe for these? Out of control.) Tried their macarons finally and although I didn't expect much, these were pretty good! Vanilla, rose, salted caramel were the ones I tried. Rose one doesn't smell or taste like rose. I thought the flavor and scent were like almost expired food. I think I read a review saying the same thing and I now believe it. Not sure why. I don't recommend the rose one. Salted caramel is really good. It is usually my favorite macaron flavor at any store and become one here as well. I dislike anything overly sugary especially with macarons and the ones at LCB give me just the right amount of sweetness when I'm craving sugar. The macaron shells really give me the good, nutty flavors of almond flour and like the texture (crunchy and chewy). I meant to try this place out for long time after seeing that it had a consistent 4.5 stars (couple months back) but never got a chance and wasn't sure where it was. Until I was driving on Barranca and just happened to look to my right. I saw the sign but it didn't registered until I passed the plaza and went "Oh dang, that's where it is." Hahah I tend to do that alot.. making U-turns. So I did but the road sucks so I ended up driving all the way down the streets then making another turn to get into the plaza. This place is tucked awkwardly in corner with the sign only visible from one side. Even the owner/person behind the counter said to me when I told her I totally missed the turn. I wanted to order a sandwich but the lady told me they stop serving food food after 2pm since the chef leaves for the day. So I opted for their pastries. I saw Red Velvet and totally zoomed in to it. I ordered both the Red Velvet cupcake and a slice of the cake itself. It was pretty pricey, $6 something for a slice of the cake and another $4 for the cupcake. The lady laughed and said they were the same just different form but I couldn't decide. I was willing to pay that much since I love this cake. They also have several other variety which I must come back and try (Vanilla Green Tea cake sounds yummy). I also bought a couple of English scones and shortbreads for $1 each. They were very buttery just like their names suggest (forgot what they are). I seriously did not regret paying so much for the cake.. just a little.. maybe a lot.. but they are SOOOO GOOD!!! It was so moist and rich with a good amount of cream cheese frosting to not overpower the entire cake itself. My husband ordered my 30th birthday cake from here - red velvet with cream cheese frosting. Everyone at the party raved and I actually like it better than the red velvet from Sprinkle's Cupcakes. It's a little lighter in texture, but still rich. We've been back there a few times to pick up cupcakes to give as gifts. They decorate their cakes and pastries very beautifully. We have also tried the green tea cake with butter cream frosting, which was okay. What I love about this place is that they make macarons, which are little french sandwich cookies. I don't see them very often in other bakeries, and although they are a little expensive, they are a unique indulgence. This bakery is also a cafe that serves some pretty tasty sounding sandwiches. We're hoping to try lunch here one day. The owners and staff are always very friendly and it feels good to support a local business owner. I've only had the green tea white chocolate cake from the recommendations of yelpers and it was deeelicious-- it's a bit pricey at $4.50 a slice but it wasn't too dry or too sweet with the right amount of white chocolate cream filling. Also had the $1 thumbprint cookies (chocolate and raspberry) which were yummy too. I just had the almond croissant with chocolate filling. It was actually very tasty and satisfying. The middle was moist and radiated almond-ness and was also flecked with morsels of chocolate. The outside was crispy and dusted with almonds and powdered sugar. The rest of the pastries and desserts look beautiful and elegant. You could easily just pick up a cake here and head directly to where you're going without worrying that it'll look cheap or tacky. They're definitely not grocery store cakes. The cake are not just simply decorated with cream and fruit; the decorator really utilizes multiple concepts of cake decorating. Layer Cake also serves organic coffee and tea, which is a nice touch. I like how they display their goodies and it's open surprisingly late for a pastry place/coffee hangout in Irvine that's not a corporate place, like Starbucks. I love the almond croissant. That's all I've had so far because my friend loved it and he wanted me to try it (since he knows I have a thing for croissants and almond)... Now I wouldn't usually post a review after only having tried one thing once that someone else picked up for me... but that is how much I love this croissant. (I'll edit my review if necessary later :) Heaven in every buttery, flakey, fluffy, flavorful bite. It's not too sweet and has a good balance of almond and pastry. It's worth the side visit for just this one item... but from the other yelpers it looks like the rest of their offerings are just as tasty. Edit: I tried the red velvet. It was so-so. Maybe I'm just not a fan of red velvet in general. From my understanding, red velvet is a lighly flavored chocolate cake. I didn't taste any chocolate. It was moist. Maybe a tiny bit dry on the edge of the cake but not bad. The frosting was surprisingly good. I'm not usually a fan of cream cheese frosting, but this was pretty good. Not too sugary and not too dense and heavy, concidering it is cream cheese based. I tend to like a sweeter cake with fluffy and less sweet frosting. Over all fair. I have to be honest, I have not been impressed by Sprinkles cupcakes. They are good, but you pay a serious premium for them. My cousin flew down from SF for her birthday and she wanted cupcakes instead of a sheet cake to celebrate. I scoured Yelp and came across Layer Cake. It has received many positive reviews and since it is a family run small business, I decided to give them a try! We need more of these places! Irvine has enough chain restaurants and stores. I called about a week in advance to order the cakes. They were very easy to deal over the phone. I was able to specify a time for pickup as well. Nice! The location is fairly convenient, as the strip mall is easy to find, but the problem is tracking down Layer Cake within the center! They are on Barranca between Culver and Jeffrey, close to the Lake. If you see Pho Bac and Lamppost Pizza you know you're close by. When I picked up the cakes, they were packaged nicely to prevent the frosting from being crushed. My cousin loved them! Be sure to check out all their frosting choices. We tried cookies and cream, cream cheese and butter cream. All fantastic! A great alternative to Sprinkles, just without the fancy packaging. But hey, you save some $$ and get a great tasting cake! read more

The bakery used to be better ): They used to have a wide variety of pastries like napoleons and etc but now they don't have those =/ Instead, satisfactory macarons and dry pretty cakes have taken their places. I have to say, I was quite disappointed with the Mango Delight Cake. It bit into it and the first bite was sawdust. Where was I? Lowe's? The Tres Leches was better, but it was weakly flavored. Although I did like the strawberry macarons, my friend told me that the green tea was weak.. WEAKKKK. The only thing saving Layer Cake from 2 stars is the pulled pork sandwich and the proscuitto panini. Secret place that may not look great, but boy oh boy - if you don't stop in - you're missing out! It's in the old school Barranca plaza where there is not so great Pho and random food places. BUT don't be discouraged - the outside may not look appealing, but the inside is def worth checking out. Macarons are SO great here - homemade and fresh. They have all kinds of flavors. I got a chocolate one, and two others-forgot what they were- probably because they were just A-OK. But I did like the chocolate one. I didn't try the eclair, my bf did. And he said he'd had better. If you are looking for CUPCAKES, turn around and head back to your car and drive to Sprinkles, because Layer Cake does not have a decent cupcake selection at all. I came here three hours before closing and they were out of everything but carrot cake, so I got a mini banana cream pie instead. About the banana cream pie...this was actually totally delicious. The crust was better than my grammy's crust (sorry grammy!), the custard was just the right amount of sweetness, and the whipped cream was light and fluffy and not overbearing at all. I would consider coming back here for the banana cream pie, but honestly, Bandera (in Newport Beach or Sacramento) does it better. RE: CUPCAKES...I came here a second time because I seriously needed a friggin' cupcake. What a waste of six bucks. I got one carrot cake, which on reflection I don't know why I even bothered with because I'm not a huge carrot cake fan or anything, and one red velvet cake. Cupcakes, bread pudding, tres leches cake, cheesecake, AND cookies all under one roof?! This is my idea of foreplay. My sweet tooth got such a hard-on walking into the store. There's a chilled case filled with almost every type of baked good imaginable. They've even got croissants! Their cookies are made in fresh batches throughout the day, and given the open nature of their kitchen, you can actually see people baking fresh batches of cookies! Yay for transparency! Tip for my fellow dessert lovers: Come here with lots of people so you can sample a bunch of different desserts! I came here with my family and got to try: 1. Flourless Chocolate Cake - This was so rich - in a good way. The chocolate wasn't any of that watered down milk chocolate or white chocolate junk, this was hardcore dark chocolate that I would hardly classify as registering with my sweet taste buds. Not a fan of flourless cake texture (really dense and hard compared to real cake) but I am a fan of the flavor. 2. Tres Leches Cake - If eating the flourless cake were like eating a rock, tres leches is silk on the tongue. Not only is it already a lighter cake, but adding milk just before serving (which they do for you) makes the texture even smoother. The marriage of milk and vanilla go so well making this my favorite dish. 3. Rum Raisin Bread Pudding - To be honest, I was kind of let down. I like my dessert bread pudding more on the pudding side and less on the solidified, chunky side. You can taste the raisins... but come on, I'm twenty-one now, I want to taste the rum! Where was it?! The only thing keeping me from being a regular is the pricing. It's $6.50 for a whole thing of bread pudding and $4.50 for a slice of cake. I think this might be an upscale asian bakery - without the baos, onion breads, and tongs/trays. But the style of the cake - not too sweet and great frostings reminds me of the great cakes in Chinese bakeries - very unlike those hideous huge American cakes with the sugary frostings made out of Crisco, topped with candies, plastic toys, and bright blue text. Yuck. So, the boston cream cake is delicious. It is white cake, surrounded by chocolate. They drizzle something on it to make it even more creamy. I love it. The cupcakes are a little on the dry side - as other reviewers mentioned, so stick with cake slices instead of cupcakes. The cake slices are more moist and flavorful. I come here a lot for their macarons, because there isn't much local competition. Let's just say that the macarons are okay at best. 7 for $11 is pretty pricey for the disappointing quality. They aren't fresh, the almond meal is chunky, and they seriously skimp on the filling. These are not even close to being decent macarons. I really appreciate a smooth texture to the cookie, which is lacking here. Not to mention that the macarons crumble because they have been refrigerated. Messy macarons = a total no-go. But what really gets me is how stingy they are with the buttercream. At Layer Cake, you get about a quarter of the filling you should, resulting in a total lack of flavor. I would say that if you have a macaron craving and don't want to drive out of the way, then Layer Cake is all you got. Sadness. In terms of flavor potency, the pistachio, strawberry and rose, tend to stick out. But they still suffer from all the above mentioned issues. What an amazing little bakery hidden in a plaza!! Both their sweet and savory items are absolutely delicious. Sweets: Highly recommend the Earl Grey Tart and Blueberry Almond Tart!! Both so yummy, not too sweet and great size!! Savory: The Romesco and Club Sandwich are oh so delicious and satisfying! I've never had a sandwich like the Romesco and it is truly to die for. The homemade sauce and ricotta cheese are the best combination..I am craving for it now just thinking about it! I haven't ordered any custom cakes yet but they seem to have some really beautifully creative designs. Will definitely order something for an upcoming celebration. I first went to Layer Cake Bakery after eating some Pho at Pho Bac Co at the same plaza. I was craving something sweet after eating something savory. And my friend having not tried macarons before made me want to go in even more. I bought only macarons, although the cakes looked extremely delicious. I bought the vanilla, coffee, caramel, hazlenut, and green tea macarons at 1.60$. Although I think that the macarons were pretty expensive considering their size, their flavor was extremely rich and spot on. The texture of the cookie had a slight crisp exterior, but once you bit through to the buttercream center, it changed and was very smooth and dense. The only two gripes that I do have about Layer Cake Bakery is the size of the macarons (which are somewhat small and inconsistent) as well as the price. The workers there were very helpful and very courteous. Next time I visit Layer Cake Bakery I am definitely going to try their cakes, which I assume is the namesake of the location. read more

The first time I ordered the cake was their signature mocha almond praline cake. Liz, the owner, is an amazing and talented pastry chef. She's very easy to work with when it comes to cake design, colors and size. I really love her simple sophisticated design, but playful at the same time. After I finished eating pho with my boyfriend and our friend, we were walking back to the car when we decided to stop by layer cake bakery. I've always heard about their macarons. I must say that the bakery looks kind of ugly like the rest of the plaza when you look from the outside; but once I walked inside, it looked like a really cute brunch/lunch spot. It was very bright inside and I saw a lot of people enjoying cute brunch meals. Even my boyfriend noticed and said we should come back here one weekend to try their meals. However, this trip was just for the macarons. They're $1.60 each, but I guess macarons are generally around that price anyways. My friend and I both got our own boxes of seven. Not as amazing as lette, but they were pretty good. My favorites were the coconut and the coffee. Their cakes and cookies looked super scrumptious as well. I wanted to try them, but they were pretty expensive. I wasn't about to spend another couple of bucks for another cookie after I already bought a box of macarons. Layer Cake definitely has a colorful and wonderful assortment of them, but they are not quite the texture nor taste that i was expecting. I moved to irvine about a year and a half ago and found Layer Cake Bakery. I fell in LOVE with their red-velvet cupcakes! They are extremely rich and creamy. The cream cheese frosting is amazing and can give Sprinkles a run for their money. I also love their colorful macaroons too! They have several different flavors like passion fruit and mango! I personally like their chocolate one. =) But I am only giving them 3 stars because the last time I went in, the woman who was helping me was especially rude. I went in to get desserts for some friends and I asked which ones are their best sellers, and she gave me a restless tone "they're all good." And just the entire time she was helping me she seemed irritated and annoyed. (I was the only one in the store too...) I wanted a bigger container too I so could give my friends a better presentation and when I asked for one, she said she was going to charge me for it. FOR A CONTAINER. wtf... I know I shouldn't be basing the majority of my review on their customer service, but I was offended. They have this great deal where you can buy a dozen macarons for 10% off. As you all know, macarons are expensive. They usually cost around $1.90 per cookie (well, at least in LA) - so, getting them for $1.60/cookie here is a really good deal. The macarons are made from scratch and they're really good. I've been to layer cake numerous times. I remember the first two times about 5 years ago now, their cakes were very dry. A few friends in Irvine still go to Layer Cake and always talk about their cakes and macarons. One brought macarons to a party my hubby and I hosted and maybe its because we were full, we didn't enjoy them too much. I tried them again a few weeks ago and it was very good. My friend also had her wedding cake catered from Layer Cake and there was so much left that we took a ton back. Days later, the mango cake was still moist and very good. Another friend bought a small mango cake from them but this time it was dry. 3 stars because it is inconsistent and you'll never know what you get. read more

Best gluten free cookies I've ever had. The owner/baker has been perfecting her cookie recipes. The gf chocolate chip cookie is even more moist than it was before. The texture is also better! If you need to eat gluten free or just prefer to you need to try this. They have also added gf peanut butter which very good. Didn't try the white chocolate macadamia nut or the oatmeal raisin but they looked good as well. Kind of pricey at $2.50 (regular cookies are $2.25 so not much more) but, you can really taste the quality of the ingredients. I am more than willing to pay!! Can't wait to try the flourless chocolate cake. It's usually sold out like it was today! They also have gf coconut macaroons and of course the French macarons are gf as well. Great concept using real ingredients. Pistachio macaron was delightful. Omellette on whites ($8+tx) was fresh and tasty. No stale butter flavored cooking oils used like at Mimi's. Hash browns were too heavy on the salt, like someone lost the top to the shaker. Pecan/banana french toast ($8.25 +tx) was nice...Pecans and bananas were sprinkled on top. Would have been better with a little more ingredients and leave a self help syrup bottle vs a tiny condiment cup on the side. Overall, a bit overpriced for the amount which prevents me from being a regular. But will occasionally stop in now and then. read more
