i love le boulanger!! been eating there for two decades. i still get the same combo. LOL. i recommend the half sandwich and half soup or salad combo. i usually get turkey-cranberry on rye with a spinach salad. the spinach salad comes with honey mustard like dressing...bacon bits and sliced egg. my parents are at this location every week. they usually get a half butter croissant sandwich. i also like their roasted red pepper soup. perfect for a light lunch in downtown los altos. =) read more

I read all the horrible reviews before coming here but thought to myself, "how bad could it really bad?" - I should have listened to the reviews. I asked for no onions on my sandwich, my sandwich was smothered with onions. I asked for an apple for my side, got coleslaw. Ordered an almond milk latte, they put whole milk in it instead. I normally don't complain about an error with my order, but come on... they literally messed up everything. Other things: food was way overpriced, restaurant was filthy... every booth had crumbs in it, tables were sticky, and the floors throughout the entire restaurant were covered in food crumbs. Great Service and best bread in the area ! I come in every week for my weekly stock of loafs of nine grain. I tried a lot of bread in the last year, but the Boulanger has the real thing ! It tastes great and we can't get enough of it. Regularly I am served by Denise and she is amazing: she has a great sense of humor and is customer-oriented. My loafs of nine grain take some time to slice, but she organizes it very well so other customers do not have to wait too long because of my order. Dear LeBou, It's been a long time. I always walk past you like you are wearing an invisibility cloak. But, don't despair, you are back in my life. That is right. This life changing proclamation comes after tasting their butternut squash soup and having it for lunch two times in a week! With the innumerable amount of soup and sandwich places in the Bay Area, I have always turned my nose down at Le Boulanger. Who would want to come to a chain when you can frequent one of the little cafes where everything is as fresh and homemade as can be? But, I would have to reconsider. While I am still not a "sandwich person," I can speak to the freshness of their soups. They always have a couple soup options--at least one vegetarian. But, the special butternut squash absolutely hits the spot. With a full, creamy taste with little pieces of butternut squash and the perfect hint of spice and sweetness, this soup is like a hug for your stomach and taste buds on a cold day. Just to clarify, this did not taste like a cream based soup, but rather like they pureed the squash and added a hint of milk. This is THE BEST butternut squash soup I have ever had. I actually went back the next day for it again. I ordered it in a bread bowl. Yes, the bread was not as fresh or tasty as other places, but it was a very nice compliment to the soup. General Notes: It can be quite busy around lunchtime. The entire place was packed full. But, the service was still very speedy. They use the paiger system so it buzzes when your order is ready. The people taking the orders are sometimes not the friendliest. Enough so that it sparked me to actually comment to my friend I was eating with. I have come here over a hundred times in the past twenty years. I have never been disappointed. The Bakery goods are always fresh and the sandwiches are so good and semingly very healthy. The people change and usually are very pleasant, when they are not they probably have had a bad day at home, not the fault of the business, just that person...rate that person aside from the business. The negative reviews are just done by grumpy people, so please avoid going to places I go to, because I like happy people. Ravo - this place is so clean! go to some other city or country and see the difference, you're an idiot! You want quick, go to a fast drive thru. This is a place to relax and smell the bakery goods. I get lunch here nearly everyday. The staff is wonderful, the food is always great, and everything is very clean.

The tables were dirty, but the staff is gold. I often get side-eye when I ask for a cup of ice to go with my hot tea, but these folks were cheerful and courteous about giving me what I wanted. That goes a really long way on a difficult day. This is an average coffee and prepared food mini-chain. There's nothing wrong with this place, but there's nothing standout or stellar about Le Boulanger, either. They have salads, sandwiches, and soup, as well as coffee drinks and a few different kinds of tea. If you need to have a meeting or get some work done, this is a fine option in a central location. Wasnt too impressed here. I usually go to La Boulangerie in Stanford Mall and I always get the ham and cheese in a toasted croissant with toasted cheese on top. At this location though they served it cold in the middle and the ham was just two chunks of ham, not thinly sliced like Stanford. I cant figure out if these are two different establishments, La Boulangerie, La Boulanger... well The flavor wasnt very good either. I'll stick to what I love. Le Boulanger turned into a cold, indifferent environment. If you want to sit there and sip your soup feeling really ALONE, ok, go there. There is no warmth, small talk amongst customers or help, and the sterility is chilling. Another NY in downtown Los Altos. I used to come here almost daily for lunch in high school, but have since found that I enjoy other sandwich places (Erik's DeliCafe) better. The bread here is often a little too hard to make he sandwich-eating experience enjoyable, but that being said, I still loved their California Sandwich. The salads are decent but not mind-blowing. I've tried out all of their pastries/sweets over the years and I love the S'more bar. I used to like the Chocolate Croissant but feel like something's changed with it and now prefer getting one at Starbucks across the street. A nice addition to downtown Los Altos. I've been here during both breakfast and lunch. For breakfast, they have an assortment of pastries such as bearclaws, danishes, muffins, and scones. A perfect place to stop by in the morning when picking up breakfast for coworkers. In addition to pastries, you can order (healthy) omelet breakfast sandwiches such as the Florentine (egg whites, cheese, spinach & arugula blend, mushroom, tomato, pesto on sourdough or croissant) and once I picked up a bowl of oatmeal with fruit. They get pretty busy during lunchtime and it can be a pain to find parking in downtown Los Altos after 12pm. But they have a pretty extensive lunch menu. Similar to Panera's "You Pick Two," here you can order half of any sandwich, and the other half a cup of soup or salad. They offer both cold and hot sandwiches. I went with a tuna melt and a clam chowder one afternoon (yes, clam chowder is served everyday!). Service in the mornings seem much nicer but maybe because they're not as busy. They also have a rewards/points program that you can join. This is a decent place to grab lunch in Downtown Los Altos, and I wouldn't mind coming back. read more

Le Boulanger has the right formula; quaint location, wifi, decent selection of food, most of which is pretty good. Their coffee won't knock you off your seat, but it isn't bad. Such a shame that the service is a tad sub par. The cashiers seem to be at a rush to swipe your card rather than ask if you want a drink with that sandwich and they always give me the feeling that I'm interrupting them with something really important. The fact that there's no visible tip jar and you can't leave a tip when paying with a card may have something to do with it. Recommended: Vegetable Medley in a croissant, eggplant although the ciabatta is a little dry - just get some other fresh bread. The butternut squash soup is good too. Not so good: the onion soup. It reminds me of hospital food. Some melted cheese and a toast could improve it. Overall a nice place to grab a bite, a cup and relax or work. read more

I've been getting my croissant fix at Le Boulanger for over 14 years. This is my f a v o r i t e bakery in the entire bay area. Here are my reasons for why I keep comin back: 1. BUTTER CROISSANTS are amazing!!! Not something I like to admit, but I am SUCH a croissant snob. If I say it's good, it's good. Ask them to heat it for you, even better! :) 2. Le Boulanger has been around since I was a kid and has consistently always had great sandwiches and breads. The staff is friendly and the service is rather quick, even during the lunch rush. I occasionally venture to try a new sandwich, but I usually stick to the Country Classic because I love their french rolls. What's nice is that you can customize your sandwich without them getting it wrong or charging you extra. So depending on what I feel, I usually get the Country Classic as listed on the menu or sometimes with Roast Beef instead. I haven't had their pastries in a while, but I had a Chocolate Crisp Cookie a few weeks ago. It looked really good, but after I took my first bite, I was quickly disappointed because it did not taste fresh. While I wasn't there late on a Saturday afternoon, the cookie tasted like it had been sitting in the case for a while. Hopefully it'll be better next time. read more

Its been awhile since I've been to Le Boulanger but when a friend suggested we meet here for lunch I thought it was a good opportunity to try them out again. I'm so glad that I did! Their menu has definitely evolved from when I tried them out years ago. They had 10+ vegetarian options on their menu. I opted for the sweet strawberry mango and spinach salad which was delish. My sandwich and soup combo were pretty good. It filled me up just where it needed to be. Not too long of a line, even at rush hour, but there wasn't alot of seating options for the lunch crowd. Luckily we managed to snag a table. I like this chain because it has some pretty good sandwich and soup options and because of the bakery portion I can pick up some bread also to take home. I only recently started coming here for food, but it's always good from what I've ordered, which are usually some kind of turkey sandwich. I'm a little opposed to getting a bag of lays as a side, but the food is good. It's been awhile since I've been here, but they offer a wide variety of soups and sandwiches on their fresh breads. This is the perfect place if you're looking for a pastry, small dessert, or delicious breads. When I was younger I never missed a stop at this place after my saturday morning swim practice to get a cherry, raspberry, or cream cheese pastry. I went here all the time in high school and have so many fond memories of warming up cold days with bread bowls of clam chowder. Le Bou has awesome clam chowder, sandwiches and salads! All of them are great, great, great! I love getting the combo (1/2 sandwich + 1/2 salad/soup) cuz I get to try all the different things they have. The service is always pretty quick, and there's a fair amount of seats inside and out. But since it's popular, sometimes they run out of room! Came here on a late Saturday afternoon with hubby. We had just finished shopping at Earthworks and took a wander around downtown Los Altos. Cute place! I ordered the chicken pesto sausage sandwich. I expected it to have more flavor and not be full of balsamic vinegar. Sausage was bland. I was expecting pesto, darn it! Hubby got a turkey sandwich to which he said was "all right". This place has definitely seen better days...it's also seen cleaner days. Carpet is filthy and dark. I don't think a shampooing could help it, to be honest. Would I come back here? My sandwich I had at Pommard was a million times better and only $1 more. Despite its chain status and huge crowds of seat warmers, i still like this place. Why? All you can drink fountain drink refills and free wi-fi. I also like the hot sandwiches. For me (harried mom of 2), it provides an excellent hangout to bring my laptop, not get harrassed and just be. They are known as a bakery but...the bread is ok but they really need to work on their pastries. They look so sad in that giant glass display. Nothing in there looks appetizing to me. Good for diet. This place is a huge part of my childhood and as such, holds a special place in my heart. But I must say now that I am a grown adult and pay for my own things, this place is slightly overrated. If I get what I want (california fresh and diet coke) My total comes to upwards of twelve dollars. For somewhere I am not getting table service, this is excessive for a sandwich that is not nearly over the top. The turkey is processed, so meh, what's the big deal. The bread is amazing, but that's about it. Comes with half a pickle and tiny bag of Lay's Chips. I paid twelve dollars in San Francisco (at another company that also happens to be called la boulange) for an iced coffee and a sandwich that blew my mind. I from this town so I come here practically on a weekly, if not bi-weekly, basis. I always get the same thing (but sometimes I diverge and get something different) and every single time it's as good as it gets and it's SO fricking amazing. Whether you're going for breakfast, lunch, or afternoon snack, everything is so good. Love it and it's always the place that my friends and I go for lunch. I went here a couple of times and ordered: Turkey & Chicken Pesto Sausage Sandwich - (On seedless sourdough roll) This wasn't what I imagined it to taste like but regardless it was tasty. I honestly didn't taste any kind of pesto whatsoever. The sausage, red peppers and vinaigrette really complimented each other well. Sweet Strawberry, Mango & Spinach - This salad was SO delicious!! ...and one of the reasons I went back the following day. The fruits all were really sweet and juicy. The mangoes are what did it for me. Or maybe it was the strawberries. It actually could've also been the mandarins. All these fruits mixed with baby spinach and crispy toasted almonds, gargonzola and sweet herb dressing just really did it for me. Bay Shrimp Sandwich - (On sourdough) was pretty tasty too. After walking by numerous times without thinking to try Le Boulanger again, I finally stopped in. The food was surprisingly tasty! Their sandwiches are definitely simple but have some great flavor and sauces. The service here is hit or miss. Sometimes its great and others it is lacking. A major flaw at this location is the interior. The building is in dire need of a REMODEL! The whole place feels dirty, grungy, and gross even though they clean it daily. It makes the food less appetizing, and they need to consider a remodel soon! read more

This is the go-to place for my family when we need a moderately healthy lunch or dinner to go. The bread is fantastic and baked fresh every day. The dutch crunch rolls are actually crunchy, instead of kind of soft and soggy like the ones you get in a grocery store deli. The sandwiches are excellent. I've tried about half of the ones that are on the menu and I have yet to find one that I don't love. My favorites are the California Fresh (turkey/avo on dutch crunch) and the portabella mushroom one. They also make a really good salad called the primavera that has cranberries and balsamic with nuts and cheese. A few years ago they started making pizzas and although I've only tried the portabella pizza, I am confident that the other ones on the menu are equally delicious. My family is also obsessed with the indian curry soup which is a thick creamy chicken soup with eggplant (maybe) and seasoned with curry powder. There is absolutely no way this can be remotely healthy but it's totally worth it and when you buy the larger size to-go, they give you an entire baguette to go with it! The venue itself is fine. It's the kind of place where you order at the counter and then get a pager/coaster and go grab your food. There is indoor seating as well as a few tables outside in the shade on main street. If you want to order from the bakery part, you actually stand in a different line than the people who are ordering from the cafe which saves some time if you just want to grab some pastries or bread. You can also order food online if you want to and then just pick it up. As of right now though, the options for online ordering are a bit more limited than if you order in person or over the phone. read more

My husband and I have lived in Los altos/los altos hills for many years. We have been coming to la boulangerie for some time since conception. It is a beautiful summer day today and we sat outside and enjoyed the ambiance of the corner. We sat for a fairly long time because service was very slow, understaffed!
