My family has been buying fruit tarts from here for years. Their tarts are made with a light buttery crust, custard, and and lots of fresh fruit. They can also add whipped cream and added a message. And note, I'm not a fruit tart cake kinda girl - I only got it because my husband just loves them and since it was his birthday, he gets what he likes. In the hunt for a decent fruit tart for my mom's bday, I found Le Croissant Dore. It's a tiny shop that's partially blocked by construction going on in the plaza, so you might easily drive past it. It was quite packed when I went there and it smelled really good. I went up to the counter to order a fruit tart and had some communication problems with the lady--or it was rather awkward. So they sell two fruit tarts apparently, or two sizes I mean--the round one or a square one. Round one is $20 and the square one is $30 flat. So I waited patiently at the counter for about 5 min or so, and before I know it, that lady comes out carrying a massive tart! It comes with strawberries, blueberries, apples, kiwis, mandarin oranges, pears, grapes, cherries, light creamy custard and an amazing crispy pastry crust. We don't know what they put in their crust but this flaky crunchy crust manages to stay crispy for days. I came here many years ago with my dad when our family was still a family, but I didn't know better how quality differs bakery to bakery. Food was just food to me. Now I see why I still come back here. For Breakfast: 3 Eggs, Xui Mai (a giant meatball) and Cari Bo (Curry beef). Accompanied by warm bread. Thoughts: This is such a delightful breakfast. The eggs are cooked nicely and quick. When I make my eggs, they are burnt from the bottom and raw at the top. I'm working on it... The giant meatball tastes fine. It's nothing super special. The Cari Bo is pretty good. The meat is soft and tears apart easily with your fork. The juices are great for dipping your bread in for that beef flavor. For Pastries: Mini Cream Puffs (4 for $1), Fruit Cake Thoughts: The mini cream puffs are small and great because it isn't over filled with cream. They aren't the best in the world cream puffs but they will do for something to pop in your mouth as you walk out of the bakery. We ordered the fruit cake several times now, and it's been wonderful. The fruits are not super tart and taste yummy. The custard at the bottom rocked my socks off! The combo of the cake with the sweet custard and some slightly tart fruits was so orgasmic. I'm getting the chills thinking about that custard. For service: Customer service was so so. If you speak only English, you may be served slightly slower. Let me save you the awkwardness...you don't get menus...it's on the wall so don't sit and assume you're getting terrible service because they didn't give you a menu. Hubby and I stopped in to pick up a fruit tart. Though we've eaten their fruit tart before, we'd never been the ones to buy one/pick one up until now. Whenever there is a big celebration within my family we always go to Le Croissant Dore to order their fruit tarts. A lot of the Vietnamese elders prefer fruit tarts instead of the traditional american cakes and that's why we keep coming here. The fruit tarts here are amazing. Not only do the fruit tarts come with plenty of fruits on them, they also give a nice variety. The pastry part of the fruit tart is very crispy and never too soggy from the custard. From the multiple times that I've ordered the fruit tarts, the fruits weren't sour either and are always fresh. To have the best taste experience, I would recommend eating the fruit, custard, and pastry all together versus enjoying the fruit by picking them off and then eating the custard and pastry separately. We usually order the 3/4 sheet which costs $58. Depending on how you cut the fruit tart there will be plenty to go around! I'll keep coming here as long as my family likes fruit tarts. I'm pretty picky with my food, especially around PLT, but this place deserves the respect for their stew. The beef stew was spicy but not too spicy, the soft carrots melt in your mouth, and the whole stew was packed with flavor including hints of onion. It was like a flavor explosion of the UMAMI flavor in each bite. We brought our friends here from the mid-west and they were impressed. It is the go-to place to have sentimental conversations while enjoying the cafe-like atmosphere in Little Saigon. 3.5 stars When I think of Vietnamese french style bread "banh mi", a few things register instantly; vietnamese sandwiches "banh mi", curry "ca ri", and beef stew "bo kho". Although the later two can be eaten with rice "com", there's something stimulating to the senses when eaten with warm, soft crusty bread. Being able to tear off that piece of bread and using it as a vehicle to sop up that wonderful sauce is bliss. At Le Croissant Dore, there are many dishes focused on this mere ritual. One in particular is their beef stew, but I decided to skip out on their most popular dish and ordered the meatball and tomato sauce "Xiu Mai" because I've never had it. The pork meatball was extremely moist. It practically melted in the mouth but still had substance. If pork was not enough, laid a piece of Chinese sausage cooked into the meatball. Sprinkled on top were cilantro to add freshness and help cut through the richness and jalapeño peppers for that kick in the ass. The meatballs were swimming in a sweet and light tomato sauce. Also, paired with a dipping sauce, which I felt was not necessary at all given the tomato sauce. Lastly, the french inspired vietnamese baguette. I'll have to admit, I was quite disappointed in the bread. It was neither warm nor soft and crispy as I had hope, which is a let down since they bake their bread in house. Perhaps this was just a bad batch. Despite the okay bread, the meatballs did more than enough to make up the deficiency. Went here this morning with the BF and his brother for some good eats. We haven't made a stop here for awhile cause there's just no time. Sunday was a perfect rendezvous. It was a little empty because we didn't get here until a little after 1:00. There were the usually old folks sitting in the front with their cup of coffee. All three of us ordered tea and the cow tongue which came with a warm baguette. For those people who would just vomit at the thought of cow tongue, they have sunny side up. Total for all three came out to be about $25 which is a bit expensive for breakfast but it's well worth it. The quality of the food is pretty consistent in taste; delicious.. the reason we will continue to come back. read more
