I have worked in the restaurant business practically my entire life, and I have never felt the need to rush people out when there is more than half an hour left until closing. Even after our restaurant closes, we still don't rush eating customers out the door. I get that cleaning and all that takes time, but a plate or two won't make too much of a difference in the long run. Onwards...I asked for one beef stew without tendons. When we finally received the plates, I went to dig in and found a few pieces with tendon. Okay...no big deal. My friend and I switched. After eating a couple of pieces, I find another few pieces with tendon. Wtf? At this point, I just pulled off the tendon and handed them over to my friend. We were trying to eat fast to get out of their way, but dang that wasn't really helping. In any case, the beef stew was solid. A little thinner than what I was used to having at home but not bad. This place has the best beef stew (bo kho) I've ever tried. We ordered a beef stew with baguette and one with rice noodles. Both were amazing! The stew was unbelievably flavorful. The beef was tender. The baguette was light as air, perfect for sponging up the delicious stew. The rice noodles had the perfect texture. We also ordered some croissants, which were decent, but not as outstanding as the beef stew. The almond croissant was better than the plain one. If I only tried the croissants this would not be a five-star review, but I really thought the beef stew was "as good as it gets"! So go here and get the beef stew! This review is just for their fruit tarts. After getting sick of constantly getting soggy fruit tarts from other bakeries, I decided to pre-order a round cake for $24 and came Sunday to pick it up. I had high expectations for this place after seeing all the good yelp reviews.. Sadly I was somewhat disappointed.. It wasn't as crispy as I hoped it would be, but definitely a nice change from the other fruit tart cakes I've eaten. The crust is more dense and they definitely are generous with their fruit toppings. Despite that, I think i was just expecting too much after reading all the reviews and then getting a not-so-crispy fruit tart was a let down. Would give this place 3.90 stars but alas yelpers: we are without fractional stars! The good: -The beef stew was fresh, tasty and steaming hot with very fresh and pungent veggies. The sauce was quite thick and much denser than I expected (I'm not Vietnamese) and a touch on the overconsentrated side flavor wise especially since I ordered the egg noodle version. Nearly perfect flavoring tho just seemed almost as if at had been reduced too much hence the heavier flavor. But I ended up ordering a baguette which was served perfectly warm and soft on the inside, crispy on the outside and ultimately wonderful for mopping up all that spicy sauce in the bowl! Recommended* The bad: -If you sit inside there is lots of outdoor seating directly in front of the window and apparently the surgeon general's warning hasn't been translated into Vietnamese. This place is quite busy on the weekend and parking is challenging. I would recom coming with another person so he/she could watch or find a parking for you while you dash inside to pick up the tart. I ordered the small fruit tart for $27. The fruits was more on the sour side, the crust was dense and reminded me of pie crusts. I think this cake would taste a lot better if they added more custard. The crust was just too much for the cake. I think if you like pie crust, then this tart is more you. I've never eaten here...that's my confession. However, I have been eating the fruit tarts here for more than half of my life. We usually put in our orders ahead of time and just pick up because the parking lot is so small. Imagine great puff pastry that's buttery and flaky and delicious. Then top that with a nice layer of vanilla pastry cream. Then throw on fruit...fresh fruit, canned fruit...it's almost too much fruit, but it's really not. Strawberries, kiwi, apples help offset the canned peaches and pears...there's a lot so I can't remember it all. But together, it is a magical dessert. It's so good because it is so simple. Everything is cohesive and it's delicious. For special events, they'll write a celebratory message for you. I've gotten the full sheet one for a family party once...it was the highlight of the meal. Pate Chau... you should call in the morning and reserve however many you want. These will be sold out before noon on the weekends so if you didn't call ahead of time, don't bother coming. Fruit Tarts... AWESOME. These make great birthday cakes. I highly suggest them. And they do sell small individual slices for people to order with a meal. Beef Stew (Bho Ko)... I only thought this was okay. It had way too much Anise Seed or Star Anise... whatever they were using. The licorice flavor blew me out of the water, and not in a good way. It was just too overpowering. Tongue Stew (Luoi Bo)... This was super yummy. Hearty, homey and just a little sweet. The tongue was cleaned nicely and sliced thin so it didn't resemble a tongue. ( I love tongue as long as it doesn't look like it... I can't do it if I know i'm munching on a giant slab of tongue.) Love this place. I have tried 2 things at this place: their tiny teeny cream puffs and the xiu mai with bread. Both very delicious in the tummy. This place has this European feeling right when you walk through the door. It's a tiny place with very little space for people to sit. I don't know how crazy it would be like during its rush hour. Both times I went was really early in the morning, so getting a table was never a problem. They don't really have a menu to give you, you'll just need to look at the menu that is on the wall next to the cash register and order from there. Get their xiu mai, it comes with warm fluffy banh mi. The sauce the xiu mai comes in is really good, especially if you dip the banh mi in it. Food here is pretty good and inexpensive. I wasn't a big fan of their Vietnamese Coffee, which is much better at other places, but I liked their food. We ordered the curry (meat was super tender), which has a watery but flavorful consistency. I generally do not like items with coconut milk in them, but I could only taste a hint of the milk. We also got some mini pork patties, which came in a brownish sauce. Really good flavor. The items came with two smaller french baguettes, which you use to dip in the sauces. We also got a croissant with shredded pork. I liked the croissant, which was buttery and baked earlier that morning, but the pork itself tasted a bit bland and dry. I also recommend the delicious fruit tart. I like that they sell them by the slices so you're not obligated to buy a whole cake. Only minus is that you have a bunch of Vietnamese old men smoking eating and smoking right outside. On our past trip to SoCal during Thanksgiving weekend, we came here for lunch with our friends. It is more like a bakery than a restaurant. However, they have a few tables inside and few tables in front of the store. We came at around 11:30am, and there was a line. And there was always a line the whole time we were there. Their menu is pretty simple with beef stew with noodles or bread (bun bo kho, banh mi bo kho, beef tongue, beef cooked in wine (bo nau ruou), xiu mai, or eggs (sunny side up). This place is known for their beef tongue besides the fruit cake. Of course, I had to try the famous dish while my husband got the safe choice; beef stew. Beef tongue was cooked similar way as beef stew but it has a lot more black pepper, and it is very oily. You could see a layer of oil in your plate. It was actually alright, not that awesome as how people I know graved about it. THeir beef stew was good but not spectacular. It is definitely not the best beef stew I've ever had. For xiu mai, I actually liked it a lot. haha. It was different from the xiu mai I've had before. They put Chinese sausage and mushroom together with ground pork. It was great with French bread. Yum!!!!! While sitting there waiting for table and waiting for the local friends who invited us to the Le Croissant Dore, I saw a lot of people coming in just to order to go and to pick up Fruit Cakes. A LOT of people were getting fruit cakes. And other Yelpers have said a lot of good things about their fruit cakes. So next time I come back to SoCal, I would definitely come here for the fruit cake and maybe xiu mai. read more

I love coming here for Vietnamese breakfast/brunch. My 2 favorite dishes are bo nau ruou (beef stewed in wine) and xiu mai (ground pork patty). Bo nau ruou - beef, potatoes, carrots, mushroom, onions, whole peppers; comes with salt pepper lime and 1 baguette roll. I've been coming here with my parents since I was younger. They are known for the bo kho, which is also a beef stew, but I prefer the bo nau ruou. Both dishes are pretty consistent in flavor. You can also count on the baguette coming out hot from the oven. Xiu mai - comes with 3 patties and a dipping sauce and 1 baguette roll. The xiu mai is made differently here. At other places it usually comes out as a ball and the meat is not as moist. Fruit tart cake - there is a lot of competition in the area, but I think this bakery does this one the best. You can always count on the fruit being fresh and the tart pastry that holds it all together to be flaky and crispy. The custard is just the right amount of creaminess and sweetness. They could have added more mushroom and onions because that would balance out the flavor better. It is in there, but maybe a bit more is needed. The bottom of the pate chaud didn't rise much because of the weight of the meat and too much butter. Angel flaky cookie is tasty, but also too buttery. They definitely overdo the butter. One of my fave places to go for breakfast/ lunch on the weekends. I've been here multiple times and have probably tried the whole menu. Recommendations: 1) Vietnamese ice coffee w/condense milk- they make it as you order thru their expresso machine. Alert *very strong and bitter* 2) green ice tea- green tea with pandan flavor. Simple but on point! Has unique taste. 3) Mi bo Kho (beef stew with egg noodles)- I like the taste of the eggs noodle with bo kho a Little more than the French baguette. 4) Banh mi bi kho (beef stew with French baguette)- similar to mi bo Kho but served with French baguette instead 5) xiu Mai- cooked with tomato sauce and served with French baguette. The dipping sauce is out of this world. Ask for sate chili, will go well with xiu mai. 6) beef tounge cook with red wine- the tongue is cooked until super soft, go great with French baguette. You can't really taste the red wine. 7) beef curry- if you're a curry fan, you have to try beef curry. Taste way different than chicken curry, the beef enhance the flavor of curry. 8) fruit tarts- fresh fruits!!! you can order a whole cake or buy it by slice. Try one slice and guarantee you will come back for more. On special events such as b-day you can buy a whole sheet! Overall the food is great but I have to take down one star because the place is somewhat dirty. If you pay attention, the utensils and tables/chairs are sticky. The beef is inconsistent, sometime undercooked and chewy. The restaurant is connected to an udon restaurant so you may order udon as well. The udon is freshly made by the udon restaurant next door. I've tried the seafood udon before and would give it a 4/5 stars. read more

I'm not Vietnamese but I do know when a place has good beef stew. I once had a friend which his mother made the best Bo Kho I've ever had in my entire life and I enjoyed everytime she made it for me and my friend. This Bo Kho was just as comparable! Oh my goodness the spices and the amount of oil and saltiness were so perfect. I'm a big fan of spicy food and this had the right amount of kick to it There was a good amount of meat and carrots as well with a baguette. The baguette was a little hard but it didn't even matter because once you dip it in the broth you're golden. I usually would go to brodard to get the Bo Kho but I was in the area and it wasn't busy considering brodard is ALWAYS busy. I came on a Monday afternoon so there were only a few people there. For some reason, I received less than half the amount of duck than the bowl I received in June, a couple of weeks ago.
