I love this bakery! My friend and I went on Sunday during mid morning and it wasn't too busy but then it definitely got busy while we were eating. They had a small seating area, and browsing through their pastry shelf was a feast to the eyes itself! I ordered the salmon salad sandwich and my friend ordered the ham and swiss sandwich, both part of their lunch menu. The lunch menu came with a drink and a pastry option. The salmon salad sandwich was an absolute delight. My friend noted that the baguette they used for the sandwiches was very delicious as well, it had a wonderful crust but still soft on the inside. I had a cheese tart with my lunch and my friend had the mixed fruit tart, and both of them we thoroughly enjoyed. The fruit tasted fresh and cream custards they used for both were light but very flavorful. We shared a vanilla mille-feuille together and it was delicious, the puff pastry was cooked to perfection and the vanilla cream was wonderful as well. We brought home the strawberry tart, blueberry tart, raspberry tart, and mixed fruit tart as we really liked the place and can't wait to try out more of their selections! read more

I came here on a whim with my friend and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made! We came for lunch and the lunch deal is seriously so amazing. You get so much the reasonable price you pay! The sandwiches are incredibly filling and the pastries are truthfully so authentic. They aren't too sweet, but are filled with so much flavor and are baked to perfection. I don't remember the name of the pastry I had wow, even thinking about it is making me salivate! I also had a latte here, and there wasn't anything too special about it. I saw a spate of recent negative reviews (but only a few reviews at all), and wanted to make sure and contrast that with my consistent experience. My family and I have come to Le Fournil many times since the pandemic started. We have ordered by phone, online, and in person, and they are always trying their hardest to help us get what we want and make sure they have it right. Their food is delicious. I'm sorry some people apparently got items they didn't like, but I can't think of anything I've ever bought there that wasn't above good and usually great. Last week, I had a tuna baguette sandwich and a lemon tart, and I was nearly crying with how perfect the bread, the tuna salad, and the tart were. The caramelized orange peel baked slightly into the tart to offset the sweetness; the perfect tangy bitterness of the lemon. So good. I think they may be getting more reviews from people who have a complaint than the hundreds that pass through weekly, including the frequent return visits from workers and residents nearby! I was hoping to go there this evening, but realize they close at 4 pm today. That's the only complaint I have (their closing time), but a bakery has to be open early and sell out, and people right now certainly don't show up at 5 pm much less 7 pm. read more

Nice little bakery. You can pick up a few baked goods at a reasonable price. I got a "Danish" pastry that was a good size for about $4. They had chocolate croissants but I didn't see any plain ones which i think is weird since I went in for one. They have baguettes and cakes and tarts. The biggest disappointment was the late of variety I was expecting. Their cases had a lot of empty spaces so either the places sells out of a lot before 11am or they don't make a lot. Could have been the time of day or something but it seemed like a sandwich shop that sold some French pastries. I went in expecting it to be the other way wrong. The pastries I samples were good but there is a closer French Bakery to me so I doubt I will go back. However if you live in the Eastlake area, then it's a nice place to visit. I will warn you that the staff is slow. The guy who rung me up built a line as he was ringing people up and taking things from cases as leisurely pace. I'm unsure what went wrong here. We ordered delivery of a bunch of pastry and everything was stale or for lack of a better definition "soggy" except for the mille feuille, which was very good. Macarons, madeleines and eclairs were clearly stale. The madeleines also had an off taste, like they'd been stored in a fridge with something off. The almond croissant was over filled to the point of having no layers. It also tasted like something you'd get from a Safeway at 1am on the discount rack. Bad or cheap butter? Reducing one star from my past reviews. FOOD: 3.0. Quality of sandwich contents is same as my earlier review, but the sandwiches themselves (or at least their contents) seem to have shrunk. The pastries didn't have the same magic as our previous visits; the millefois was too sweet for my taste. COFFEE: 4.0. SERVICE: 4.5. AMBIANCE: 4.0. The interior has been renovated. Slicker with new tables, and the condiments/disposal area has been positioned in a more convenient place near the front door. I do not give out very many 5 stars but based on my first experience here - they are definitely 5 stars and I will be back. It is a smaller bakery - but has plenty of seating - not that far from the University (10 minutes or so) that makes great desserts. Parking is good - in the small garage behind them. The entrance to the garage is slightly north of the bakery - next to the small flower shop and parking is free. There is a door in the garage that goes directly into the Bakery. First of all they make a great Almond Mocha and put it in a real cup (not cardboard). They do ask if you want almond syrup or milk - since Almond Mocha's are changing to a Mocha made with Almond milk - that is a good idea. Next the Almond Croissant I had was like I am use to from back east. Out here they think a Croissant with 5 or 6 almonds on top qualifies as an Almond Croissant. NOPE - here they also put a lot of almond paste in the Croissant - making the treat delicious. It was also airy and a decent size. I'm always disappointed when I go here. I guess I keep going because I remember when it was a really good bakery. The pastries here are fine but not exceptional. It's convenient for me for when I come back from my Saturday morning event to get some baked goods. That said, it has clearly been sold to somebody who is less interested in quality. Also, seems like it's owned now by somebody who is less interested in good service either. Last time I went there, I ordered some items which I enjoy, and they were fine. Not bad, but not worth the prices. The service wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either. Nobody was rude to me, but also it felt like they were just doing their jobs and at one point they served a couple of other people who had arrived after me before getting me my order. So, if you're not very particular about baked goods and you're not so worried about great service, this isn't a bad place. That said, I'm going to have to start looking around for a different bakery after my weekly Saturday morning event. Really love this French bakery and especially their pastries! I have been coming here for years for the occasional chocolate croissant and coffee. I am not usually in the area but it happens to next to my dentist so I will treat myself after I go to the dentist haha. My go-to bakery. They're open early and always bustling. The fresh baguettes are amazing (took some on a hike and my nieces devoured the whole thing in the backseat). The pastries are beautiful and delicious. I'm pretty simple so I always get one of the croissants whether it's stuffed with ham and cheese or chocolate. It's so buttery and flakey. I've had my share of the tarts and mousses too. Best of all, these amazing creations don't break the bank. I just saw the news that Le Fournil is in need of funds due to the awful pandemic and came here to finish my review from two years ago. I have LOVED Le Fournil for as long as I've lived in Seattle -- their tarts are TO DIE FOR: perfectly sweet filling in a perfectly buttery crust, a tiny bite-sized flavour bomb, just the right size to fulfill your craving without making you feel bloated. I CANNOT imagine them closing. I am donating $50 to them, and I am going to keep my fingers crossed for them to stay open. To anyone reading this review wondering if you should donate: if you are free and in Seattle, go to this lovely shop, eat a chocolate tart, and tell me it doesn't totally make you forget your worries. My favorite bakery in Seattle. As a rule, I generally don't love pastries and cakes, but I adore Le Fournil and have been coming here regularly for over three years. I love the tarts, which aren't too sweet. The mixed fruit tart is my personal pick. The millefeuilles are also excellent, sweeter than the tarts. The larger versions of the tarts also make the best birthday cakes and are perfect for parties/gatherings. I haven't tried everything, but I have tried quite a few things, and the quality generally seems to be high across the board. The lunch special is an excellent deal for what you get; a sandwich or salad, pastry of choice, and drink of choice. I believe it's $10.99, not $9.99 as their website says. This place can get busy at certain times, a testament to its popularity. The staff has always been friendly in my experience. Only thing is that I wish they would consider making some improvements to the interior and refreshing it slightly. In nicer weather, the place also seems to attract quite a few flies, which I definitely wish they could do something about. Proper bags to house take-away orders--multiple containers of tarts, for example, that one preferably doesn't want smashed--would be nice. Sometimes they have bags, sometimes they don't. That said, this will remain my go-to bakery in Seattle for the foreseeable future. I recommend it highly. read more

Sandwiches, pastries, and coffee. Is there a better cafe like lunch than that? I pass by Le Fournil quite a few times and finally decided to give it a shot. I heard about their lunch special and was very curious as to what they had to offer. For $9.99 you get a sandwich, a dessert, and a 12 oz coffee! This sounded like a good deal to me. My partner and I both got lunch specials. Mine: Chicken salad sandwich, raspberry mille-feuille, and chai tea latte. His: Pate sandwich, lemon tart, and machiatto. For my meal, I loved the chai tea latte. They make it not too sweet or spicy here and a 12 oz is quite a bit of chai tea. No latte art, but still really well made. The chicken salad sandwich came on a toasted baguette and had some bell peppers, lettuce, tomato and cheese. I really loved the crispness of the baguette and the taste of the sauteed bell peppers. There were bits of chicken in the sandwich, but I do think it could have had more. Overall, the sandwich tasted good. The raspberry mille-feuille is a layered cake with puff pastry layers and then layers of raspberry buttercream. Typically I think it's made with a pastry cream so I wasn't sure how I felt about having heaping amounts of buttercream between the layers. It was really a beautiful slice so I knew I wanted to give it a try. Unfortunately, the part of me that isn't too big of a fan of frosting couldn't get past the sweetness of the raspberry buttercream. It was the texture of Italian buttercream; very light and airy. I did like the puff pastry layers since they were very flaky. The raspberry jam and fresh raspberries on top were a great addition as well. For his meal, the pate sandwich was not heated up. The pate filling didn't seem like very much, but you could taste it with every bite. It almost reminded me of tuna salad, but more meaty. There were pieces of pickles in it, but it was uneven. I do think the pickles add a nice sour taste to cut the meatiness of the sandwich. The lemon tart was delicious! It has the perfect lemon flavor to it and the crust is very soft but holds it's shape. There is also some hints of raspberry filling at the bottom which is a nice contrast to the lemon. At some point it got a bit too sweet for me, but overall it was a good tart! For the price, it's a good deal since drinks and desserts are about $3 each and a sandwich is priced at $7. So with the lunch special you're saving about $3 or so. However, the pictures made it seem like the sandwiches were quite big, but it is deceiving. The sandwiches are actually pretty small, although after eating everything, you should feel content. So for the portion size of the sandwich, I'm not sure if it was worth the price or not. Service was just okay. The ladies seemed a bit moody/tired from their day. They weren't doing much smiling or talking. It just seemed like they wanted to finish up already. There was also no music playing so it was pretty quiet. There are tables inside to sit at and a bussing station as well. Water is self-serve. Overall, I think the pastries here were pretty good and unique. I might come back to get some tarts and another chai tea latte. I think I will pass on the sandwiches though. read more

This place is amazing! Super fresh and delicious, and beautifully made French pastries. The Chou la Creme is a giant pillow of light pastry filled with pastry cream and topped with a layer of dark chocolate - incredible. The Mille Feuilles are likewise simply delicious. As are the various fruit tarts, croissants, sandwiches, espresso drinks and other items they make. Funny enough, despite being a diehard chocolate lover the only thing that I don't like so far of theirs (despite it being well made and beautiful) is their chocolate tart - the ganache is not chocolatey enough somehow. read more

Just over the bridge from UW, Le Fournil is a nice French bakery/cafe that is awesome for a relaxed weekend breakfast or brunch. I came here on a Saturday morning and got a passion fruit tart and a broccoli swiss quiche. Most people probably go for their specials ($5.99 for a coffee and croissant sandwich during breakfast, and $8.99 for a coffee, sandwich/salad, and dessert for lunch) but I had a weird craving for a passion fruit tart and quiche, so that happened. The space looks small from the outside, but is actually pretty roomy. The cafe filled up while we were there, and the line got pretty long, but it didn't feel crammed by any means. Staff are friendly and professional, and orders come out quickly. My passion fruit tart and quiche were delicious and really satisfying, and their coffee is also really good. I'll definitely be back for breakfast sometime, and it would likely be a nice place to sip coffee and study as well. read more

If my mother has a red gloss box from Le Fournil on the counter when I come over, I know one of the following: I have been very good OR she needs a favor OR she's on another pastry binge - possibly all three. The choux and mille feuille are some of my favorite hands down between Seattle and Portland. Every item I've tried here is very good, including coffee and sandwiches. One of my favorite memories is sitting in Le Fournil on my birthday having a treat with my husband as the city started to shut down in a snow storm. You look up at the I-5 bridge if you sit at the counter...not so lovely generally, but the combo of the snow and quiet as we watched flakes swirl past the bridge as we sipped lattes is burned in my brain. "You can't always get what you want," sayeth Mick Jagger, and I think he was implying good stuff, not just any old thing. Know that you won't always get what you want here - Le Fournil sells out regularly. I cannot count the number of times I've seen their cases bare. Parking can be difficult, they have a lot, but most spots are 15min limits so if you're planning on eating in, you'll probably have to park a couple blocks away. I was able to resist the variety of goodies they had in their display case ie. macarons, tarts, croissants, etc, but I will be back to try them. What isn't common is $3.99 for a latte and a chocolate croissant or a warm croissant sandwich with egg, cheese, and ham. The lunch special is equally impressive. I believe it's something like $8.99 for a sandwich on a house-made baguette, a pastry, and a bottled water/soda/perrier. There are tons of sandwich and pastry options and you really cannot beat it for the price. They also do online ordering for whole offices with box lunches for about $10 a piece with a low minimum (like 20$ I believe?) I'd definitely recommend Le Fournil for flavor, convenience, and price. I thought this place was going to be manifique! It turned out to be only alright... The price was good though, and the food looked delicious and fresh. Sometimes when you walk toward the shop, you can smell the bread baking and that is beyond awesome. Aside from that, this place is so-so. I got some strawberry tart thing, and it just tasted average. Nothing blew me away. I also tried a baguette called the Forestier. Once again....eh. I am so indifferent toward this place that I would either go back or not depending on my mood.
