Placed an online catering order for delivery for a birthday event. Come party day my order was delivered (on time) but was missing a few items. Additionally a few of the items (mini tarts) were smashed in transit. I called and attempted to rectify the situation maybe ten minutes after accepting the delivery and was told by the employee who answered the phone that they were a barista and could not help - after acknowledging they had too many tarts on hand (I took this to mean that my missing tarts were still sitting at the bakery) and that I would have to call back on Monday to speak to a manager/someone who handles catering. Since the weekend I have called twice and twice been told that the manager is not available. Today I was also told there catering does not have an email address to utilize in case there are issues with an order. BOTTOM LINE: The pastries are decent and great for a display spread. I would caution anyone who is thinking of using their catering services. The chances that I would patronize Le Fournil again for my event needs are dwindling with every phone call placed to rectify what should have been an easy fix. UPDATE - 7/27/18 I got a message from Trista, the manager, who said that she was told that I called and was "very upset" so she looked me up by her phone number. On the phone she was pleasant and apologetic, explaining that she's a "one woman show" and can only deal with issues when she's at the office. She refunded my order. read more

This review is based on two horrific customer service experiences. The first time I came in I waited for my order at a table and heard a man who seemed to be the manager talking disrespectfully about a customer who had called in for catering. He went on and on for about 5 minutes about how he had handled the challenging conversation to another employee and completely disregarded that the entire room could hear his level of annoyance and lack of customer service technique that he demonstrated during this conversation. Not impressive. Today, my boss placed an order that was misunderstood by the catering manager and I put her on the phone with my boss to clear it up. She slammed the binder of options down and rolled her eyes repeatedly, even going as far as shaking her head at me while my boss was talking on the phone. I have been in customer service for 9 years and this is now the second time I have been appalled at the amount of disrespect that they have shown their customers. Learn to put a smile on and be kind even if you are pissed. I would encourage the owner of this business, if it is not someone who is on the ground every day, to have some real conversations with the people who seem to manage the business. FINALLY. My coworkers and I decided to take a work lunch and chose Le Fournil to satisfy our hunger...and that's exactly what this place did. For $9, we were able to order an entree, a drink, and a dessert. A couple of us (me included) ordered the ham, swiss, and butter sandwich. OMG. The bread was crusty and flaky and the layers of ham and swiss were thin but SO delicious. Who knew simple could be this good?? The latte I ordered was also satisfying....and my blackberry tart - a nice portion size with a MOUNTAIN of blackberries. They serve good amounts of food. Enough to fill you but not so much that you leave feeling heavy and disgusting. I was able to enjoy a sandwich, an entire dessert, and finish my coffee...and I was still able to get back to work! Le Fournil is the closest taste of Paris I know of. Their pastries are superb, and their sandwiches are simple yet delectable. The lunch special sounds too good to be true - $10.49 for an entree, dessert, and drink (can even be a latte)! I also love the retro feel of the place, with the vintage French posters that decorate the napkin holders and trays your food is served on. Had brunch here with my friends. They offered breakfast and lunch specials. I had lunch special, with tuna sandwich as entree and mixed fruit tar as dessert. The sandwich was good, and the tar was amazing. One of my friend also had lunch special, and she chose veggie sandwich, which was really special and yummy. How do you rate bakeries? I decided that only on the quality of the baked goods and not on decors, services, or the "uniqueness" element that I usually asked from restaurants. I had their cakes before and were very impressed. This time, we bought mix-fruit tart (10") and mini chocolate tarts (6 per order). Both were supremely delicious and snatched up quickly. At my work we have used this catering a few times and for the quality, the price is great. In my recent ordering experience, I was quite taken aback by the abruptness from the person who was helping me. I called to notify them of the change in delivery location (on a different floor of the same building) and The lady who was on the phone responded with "Are you serious?!" First off, she answered the phone calling me by name and she sounded annoyed so clearly I got her bad side. I came here on a Sunday morning to do some studying, and the place was pretty crowded, with lots of bustling noise. It wasn't too noisy though, just a fair amount of background noise and conversation, but I was still able to study perfectly fine. I had an almond croissant and an almond brioche. The croissant was delicious, although I could have gone for a slightly stronger almond flavor (but I say that about everything). The brioche was a tad dry, but still tasty. Huge bonus is the free parking for an hour in the garage right behind the bakery! Also the prices are extremely reasonable, and about 2/3 the price of most other bakeries I've been to. This bakery is insanely good!! I don't typically go out of my way to write reviews, but I was super impressed both times I've been. I've tried a few different croissants, their baguettes, and their chocolate eclair. The eclair was not my favorite, but the cinnamon roll croissant will make you see god. The ham & swiss croissant ($2.45) was decent but it was not as flaky (aka buttery) as I had hoped for and lastly, the strawberry pistachio tart ($2.95)...was pretty decent. This is one of my favorite breakfast/ brunch spots in town. Mostly because of its convenient location. I row out of the Pocock Rowing Center (http://www.pocockrowingcenter.org) which is right beneath the univeresity bridge. On the weekends, my rowing buddies and I would go to Le Fournil (or as we refer it, "the French bakery") for much needed hot coffee and a quick bite. My staple is their breakfast special: ham & cheese croissant and 12oz latte. They also have a display case full of very tempting tarts and cakes, but typically it's too early in the day for me (especially after a hard workout) :) I heard they are very tasty, nonetheless. My sister is also a frequent customer and she would buy a whole baguette from them. Lovely environment, wonderful people and delicious food. I don't drink coffee or venture far with drinks but one time I told them my tastes and asked them to make something they thought I would like. The eclair was ok- not much flavor. THe non fat latte was very strong. I appreciated the coffee. None the less I was absolutely disspointed and suprised that people were raving about this place. If you are ever by U-District, drive towards Eastlake Ave E and stop by this little bakery cafe. Immediately you are greeted and are asked if you have any questions regarding the pastry case or from the food menu. The lady that helped me was thrilled that I was getting the passion fruit tart -- which was SO TASTY by the way. It was not overly sweet and it was topped off by a strawberry slice. I had it with some passion fruit black tea and it was just a great combination. I haven't had any other pastries or foods of that matter but so far so good. Price was worth the quality of my passionfruit tart. I'll be coming back again. It does get busy towards lunch so get there but the line moves fast. I love that there is a window outside looking in where workers are making the dough etc. Although the place doesn't have a pretty layout, the quality of their foods is far more important. Their bread is awesome and cheap, so remember to leave room in your bike bag to carry home a baguette! I am giving this place four stars because of the quality of the food and I was not pleased with the time management of the staff (they really need to change their system of orders). My boyfriend and I went there for a breakfast and ordered a lot of stuff, because I love sweets and he doesn't (so I could try his food and write that their sandwiches are VERY good). The mixed fruit, blueberry, lemon, and strawberry tarts are most common for me to get with my lunch and their lunch special is one of the best deals in town. I never would have thought this unassuming place would have such amazing sandwiches. I actually went back to buy one to bring home for my husband after my appointment because they were so good. The service is not amazing, as some have noted, but I didn't have any experience with anyone being rude - it was more like they had their own thing going on, they were polite when taking the order and delivering it, but their energy was mostly focused on each other, not the customers. It seems clear that the employees have a lot to do and the manager maybe doesn't emphasize customer service too well. I was also surprised that they had very few breads available (the pastry fridge was full but there were only a few croissants and two loaves of bread available). Maybe staffing related? Our office recently had the box lunches delivered and everything was magnifique! I opted for the pâté with cornichons, and it brought me straight back to university days in France. The baguette was perfect. I know some people think you can get "French bread" anywhere these days, including any chain grocery, but in truth it's hard to find the real deal. Le Fournil has captured the elusive baguette, and now you can, too. Some of my coworkers thought the ham sandwich didn't have much meat on it, so I am noting that, although I believe the French way is not to put 4 inches of meat on your sandwich. If that's what you're looking for, go to a deli where they are famous for mountains of meat on their sandwiches. Moving on...the pastries: mon dieu! How to decide? Seriously, you can't go wrong because everyone was oohing and ahhing about how wonderful they were, and wonderful is an understatement. Today we sponsored a Lunch & Learn event for a client on Capitol Hill around 15th and Madison, and chose Le Fournil Bakery & Catering for the food service. First time for us, after quite a few L&L events over a number of years. Very pleasant surprise. We ordered the "Large Sandwich Platter" with assorted Turkey and Swiss, Ham and Swiss, and Roast Beef and Cheddar sandwiches, along with the Tarragon Salad (Bleu cheese as a chosen side topping), and lastly the Small Mini Pastry Platter consisting of the mini Chou a la Creme, mini Opera, and mini Apple tart deserts. I have to say it was all fabulous! Greatly received by our client, promptly delivered, and reasonably priced. The pricing was actually along the lines of many "national brand" sandwich companies from our experience, but vastly better. The client loved it - we loved it - will definitely do it again. I've had their almond croissants on multiple occasions, but it's disappointing when the bakery doesn't do a better job than their redistributors. In comparison to the best almond croissants (at Bakery Nouveau's), these are smaller, much sweeter, and extremely greasy. The butter leaked right through the paper bag. Not that I don't like butter (I love butter.), but butter tastes awful when cold. And that's the thing. These croissants weren't given warm loving; not reheated for me. May have been a not-so-good day for the employees because they weren't friendly when I went in. I'd pass on returning. read more

I was craving some pastries, so I went here for breakfast the other day. Le Fournil is a cute little French bakery/cafe (newly or semi-newly remodeled, not sure when they did it), great for foggy mornings or sunny summer afternoons. It's right past Eastlake Ave, so it feels alive and active. I wish I would've taken a picture of the menu, looking at the pictures posted, I think the prices have all raised about a dollar. Sandwiches are now $6 something instead of $5.75 according to the pictures here. I got the Breakfast Special for $4.99, used to be $3.99; still a really great deal if you're getting a latte or a fancier drink. The latte was perfect, the latte art was not. The croissant was also very good. They warmed it up for me, but I wish they had left it in the oven a bit longer since it was just above lukewarm when I got it and it quickly became cold. Perks: The waitresses who were there were really nice. And, this is one of the rare places that has a FREE PARKING GARAGE! There are 15 min and 1 hour parking spots for Le Fournil and a few for other establishments in the same building. I was there for a couple hours and didn't get a ticket, but I would check your car occasionally if you're going to be there for a long time. Be careful though, the spots are tight! If I lived closer, I'd probably become a regular.
