Went here with some friends last night. We ordered a prime rib for two and a rib eye. While the prime rib was medium rare in the middle, a large portion around the steak was well done. Not good. The rib eye was actually more flavorful despite being a supposedly worse cut of meat. It was also a bit thinner then I would have liked. We also spit a duck breast appetizer which was good. The french fries were okay. The side of sauteed onions was okay. The mashed potato was flavorless, mostly due to the fact that it was not allowed butter. Roasted potatoes needed to be roasted more as they were soft and not crispy on the outside. The service was good and water refills came at a good pace. We also did not order dessert because dairy-free dessert is only served in hell to torture the occupants. If you are looking for a good steakhouse there are plenty of better options. If sadly your God demands that you eat kosher steak, I admit the options are limited, try Reserve Cut. read more

Birthday lunch with my sisters before Broadway matinee was perfect! Delicious , excellent service, nice ambiance, reasonably priced. Two of us got the French Dip, one got the burger. I cannot even begin to describe the experience we had with this restaurant. However, for the sake of the readers here, I will make it brief. -service was terrible. Server was busy with a bigger group than us and getting her attention was almost impossible. It was a very frustrating experience. -since service was bad, we made a decision to not leave a tip to the waitress. First time ever for us. and we go out pretty frequently. -we signed our check and left. -Next day, we realized that the amount charged was bigger than what we originally signed. Turned out, the server circled the tip percentage she wanted for herself and we were charged accordingly. THIS IS THEFT.PERIOD.NO OTHER WAY TO DESCRIBE IT. -Back and forth with the restaurant brought us nowhere. I'd expect them to be a little bit apologetic. After all, this is a fraudulent charge on their behalf. But no! They sent me a picture of some paper trying to prove that they had refunded us the gratuity amount (after numerous phone calls) and when I said it did not appear on our Amex statement (a month later), they said-"not our problem", "We did our part". It's actaully a French Kosher steak house to make things more interesting. You first walk in there is a legit butcher there for all your cuts of meat. Really makes you feel like the meat is very fresh- in which it is. The vibe is a old school steak house with an upstairs and a dowstairs. We sat upstairs which tends to be quieter. Service was great- very attentive and no issues with that. This place does not have the typical steak house apps such as raw bar due to the Kosher law. I love new experiences and learning about religion and culture. We had the lamb chili and lamb sausage to start. The lamb chili was ammmazing. Just enough spicy and full of flavor. The lamb sausage was meh- too salty and strange flavor. Now on the to the main course- prime rib for one ($49). Yummmm. I love any steak on the bone and this one comes on the bone. Makes it extra juicy and flavorful. My cut was delicious. Perfectly cooked to medium rare and perfectly seasoned. The fries and salad that come with the steak are delish. The fries are especially nom. Full bar and wine list are here! All very good of course. Can't screw up alcohol. I also had the chocolate mousse for dessert which was standard delish. Stopped in for a steak Frites and a glass of Rioja. It was 4:30, so well before the theater time crunch. I've been coming here for 20 years. The last time was about 5 years back. Some things have declined, sad to say. The salad, an essential part of a nice steaks frites, used to be perfectly seasoned and dressed. This time, it was underdressed. The china service has changed to a rectangular plate and the meat now rests on top of the fries. If you like juice laden fries, you won't mind the change. If you like them crisp, not so much. The wine tasted oxidized and harsh. And the steak--well, I ordered it medium rare. It came out medium, but a true medium, so I could deal and was reasonably tender. But the steak itself had off flavors of an uncleaned grill, or of highly carbonized lava stones. Or perhaps there were gas flare ups and the grill cook didn't move the steak. In any case, it spoiled things a bit. So this was really a 1.75 star meal. It used to be four stars here, because the kitchen managed to execute simple food well. I don't know if that is no longer the case--but for my meal it was. I'm giving it two because the waiter was solicitous despite having a 14 top and other more lucrative tables. It is way too noisy and hard to talk - quite a surprise for a restaurant claiming to have a french restaurant ambiance. Not sure why the old lady over the phone is always rude and always refuses to take instructions?!!! Every damn time I place an order and call to make sure they follow the temperature I want for my chicken since they don't have that option online and she gives me attitude and argues that chicken is always well cooked which it has nothing with my desired temperature!!! And yet I get my order and the chicken is just about cooked white and I can't eat it that way. So every time I order not only I wait almost two hours for my food but I get it cold after all that wait and I also get it not as instructed and it goes straight to rubbish. I will not be ordering from this establishment ever again as have given them more than 100 chances and they keep failing. We went on a Monday around 5pm. We were seated right away. The meat cases with steaks and whatnot looked delicious as you walk in. The ambience was very cool like "old NYC". Our waitress came over and greeted us told us the daily specials. She was attentive and friendly. So they wheels kinda came off the wagon with over all experience. I ordered a beer she opened the bottle and the top had broken off of the bottle, the others in my group ordered a bottle of wine. She brought the bottle with no glasses and almost poured the wine into? It was several minutes to get glasses and a replacement beer and the wine bottle back with glasses. The food came out my steak was cooked to perfection. My cousins was ordered well done came out rare. My nieces lamb shank was delicious. We sent back the under cooked steak and it was awhile before it came back. Had we known that splitting a check by 3 people was such a problem. Apparently we should have said something in the beginning but maybe she should have asked in the beginning. We've been here multiple times in the past few yrs. It has gone down food wise and also the service wasn't good. The place was empty and we were seated in a corner 7 ppl! The floor was shaking which the waiter says happens everywhere. not! I usually have the hanger steak medium, it was good today but not great. My salad had no dressing while my sisters was basically a soup of dressing eeek! The steak we ordered for my kids cooked medium came very rare and red. They wouldn't eat it. I'm gonna rate the food 2/5 stars and this might sound mean but the best thing we had was the bread and the olive oil. The service was average and the food was so bland. Anything we ate had nothing special to justify the price tag. Steak tasted like steak and to be honest, I don't think it was even seasoned. Fries were fries, nothing special. The side salad or whatever you called it, was legit some arugula or lettuce dressed with some balsamic vinegar. The duck was bland as well, but the sweet potato purée was delicious. I don't know why anyone continues to go to this place. It's horrendous. Someone in our party ordered the salmon, prepared medium. It was raw. We sent it back and it came back raw. The ratatouille underneath was drenched in grease. In fact everything was greasy. The French fries -- really, FRENCH FRIES? For these prices? The French fries were excessively oily, and they had no taste. Ever hear of salt? What makes me nuts also is that on many of the steaks they put the greasy steak on top of the French fries. They ended up turning to mush. The half roasted chicken tasted like they chopped the chicken with a cleaver, dumped it into an oven pan and threw it on a plate. My 12 year old could have made more of an effort. A few people ordered roasted potatoes. I swear, they must have sliced up the fingerling potatoes and thrown them into the microwave, then dropped them in a vat of oil. Seriously, how do you screw up roasted fingerling potatoes? When you don't care, that's how. They just didn't give a crap. We were with a large group and we ordered dessert- but when the dessert came, the staff realized that they hadn't yet cleared off the table, so they set the desserts on the side and cleared the table. The problem was, all of the desserts had ice cream. When they finally served then, they were all slop (see picture). And they made an excuse about why they were melted-- it was our fault. I called them out on it. Amazing. They screwed up and they just couldn't bring themselves to take responsibility. One of the desserts was "berries with lime sugar." Take a look at the photo I attached. It's a few berries someone cut hastily and dumped on a plate. Maybe this is OUR fault too? The sorbet was quite good, but I'm guessing they scooped that out of a container. It's incredible because this is exactly the same experience I had 5 years ago, the last time I came to this place. Garbage... This has got to be the worst kosher steak I have ever had it lacked flavor was over cooked and all the appetizers were okay. I also want to mention that as you eat the ground shakes beneath you. This restaurant is comical for how bad it was and for how expensive it was. I highly suggest you go somewhere else. First of all I was introduced to Le Marais by a concierge in Manhattan back in 98. He did not even know that I kept kosher at the time. I have been coming back ever since. It has a great ambiance and service not found in other french or kosher restaurants of it's kind. If you are having what turns out to be a bad date here just know that most of it will be ok and that you should order the Steak au Poivre and most of your troubles will vanish...ok maybe not. But that is what the wine is for, right ? They have this salmon dish that is absolutely mouth watering . I believe its the Filet de Saumon Rôti and its $25 which is very reasonable for Midtown Manhattan. Any time you go you should always call 6 hours before at least to make sure you wont be waiting 30 plus minutes for a table. On Sundays come before 6PM to make sure that you dont become part of the theatre rush crowd. Thats just my opinion. On my next visit to NY I will be visiting for the 50th time since 98 and I make a prediction that I will still like the place and that we will get some of the best service ever. I dont feel that this is an exxageration by any mean I am not sure why people bring their 6-9 year old kids here because when I was 7 years old I did not care if my salmon was cured or not. I met up a friend who was in from Israel and since he has dietary restrictions and I do not, I let him pick a place where he was comfortable eating and this is how I came to find Le Marais. The place is tucked into a busy side street - you would walk past it if you weren't looking for it, but it is right next to the parking garage on 46th. Great for me. My buddy was at the bar and yes, it is a completely glatt Kosher place - so you will see a lot of the same clientele. I had no issue at all and was welcomed by the hostess and grabbed a cocktail and we hit our table. The place is a bee hive of activity which sort of amps up the sound level, fine enough- we were discussing world events anyway so the noise was of no issue to us. Service is a little hit or miss. The waiter was a bit hurried - or impatient it seemed but he did a decent job of getting the order in correctly and the timing of the dishes was correct so no real complaints. We ordered up some apps and all were fine except the hummus which, to me, was a little too tart, like there was too much lemon in there or something. My pal had sweetbreads which I passed on and we also had some sort of broiled chicken which was very good. I went with steak Au poivre which is my go-to dish when in an unfamiliar place - it gives me a good yardstick to measure a place by. The steak was cooked exactly how I asked and the Au poivre sauce was decent. Not mind blowing, but not horrid either. I've had both versions of Au poivre and this was a solid middle of the road Au poivre sauce. Bully for me. The veggie selection was very limited and my friend told me that this is a Kosher thing - so no broccoli for me. I did manage to get string beans but by and large it seems that you get a salad and french fries with everything. They have a decent looking dessert selection but we skipped. Note also that the bartender made me 1 totally ass-kicking drink and it took me most of dinner to kill it. Nice. There is a butcher shop of sorts next to the bar so you can take home kosher meats if that is something you need to do. All in all a good experience and I would go back. I was lucky enough to be treated to lunch here by a regular. Even luckier, I got there a few minutes early and spent the time appreciating the meat at the butcher counter inside the door. When we sat down I knew exactly what to order. Steak tartare, my ultimate test of a meat restaurant. It was perfect. My only regret is that I did not ask for a few anchovies to drape over the top... not mix in, since the flavors were perfectly balanced, but to savor as an accompaniment. We started with a salad but didn't really need it; the tossed greens on the plate with my frites were enough to provide a nice acid counterbalance. Great steakhouse for Jews! They have all kinds of high quality meat. We had a decent steak fries and salad which was definitely worth the price we paid for it $26 a dish and $100 for the entire meal (including tip) The steak came hot and cooked exactly the way it should be. They also offer Goldstar beer which put them in a whole different level compare to the other "wannabe Israeli steakhouse". Welcome to Les Marais where up is down and down is up. We ordered a medium rare steak. Round #1 - We received a well done steak. When we mentioned this to the waiter, he asked the manager to come over. Rather than apologize for the mistake and cook another steak, he starts arguing with us that the steak was cooked correctly. He said he would cook the next steak rare. Round #2 - We received a steak that was raw on the inside. We asked the manager to put it under the fire for a minute. He again tells us we received what we ordered. The manager returns 10 minutes later with a medium well done steak (outside was burnt to a crisp, but the inside was medium well done). We gave up. Easily one of the best kosher steakhouses around, Le Marais' French-gastronomy menu is top-notch with great service and atmosphere. One of my friends went with a group that didn't understand the menu, so the waiter took 20-30 minutes explaining everything to them. They treat their customers very well. The second floor is more roomy with more sofa-like chairs, I prefer it to the ground floor which is somewhat standard. The prices are better than the other steakhouses nearby as well (Prime Grill, Wolf & Lamb, etc.). There is a lot of variety on the menu, so I recommend going often to make sure you don't leave any stone unturned. The Steak au Poivre with a red wine is good place to start. read more

I would say I was disappointed but that requires thinking highly of something in the first place. I read the yelp reviews before going and had low expectations but they managed to fail even those. Service was a bit slow and our waitress seemed to have never had beer before. Everyone had to repeat their drink order and eventually just point to the beer they wanted on the menu (for 7 people and 6 beers, it was almost funny). She didn't know what an IPA was so good luck if you're expecting advice on what to drink. I would write that off as an unfortunate distraction had the meal been any good. When you enter, you're greeted by a small display case of the meat they sell (you know, so they can put "butcher" in the name) and there is a plate of amazing steaks that had to be prime grade. This got me excited because it's hard to mess up a great steak. In fact, the less you do, the better it tastes. Alas, there is no possible way that I was served a steak that was in that case. My steak looked like a select-grade portion control cut sold from a restaurant supply store. My 16oz ribeye had hardly any cap on it and was the brownest medium-rare I've ever had. My only solace is that my employer was paying for the meal. I can't imagine why anyone would eat here. New York is a huge place with amazing food. You can do better. read more

I was excited to try this place since a recently known website named Le Marais as one of the top 14 steakhouses in NYC. I have to respectfully disagree. I found this place to be extremely subpar from the bar to the dinner table. I was there as a party of 6 and started the night at the bar. The bartender for some reason could not comprehend the idea that more than one person from my group were buying drinks, so he basically put all the drinks on my tab...ouch. When we sat down and order our food, the "prime rib" caught my eye and all my friends followed my lead. We all ordered the "prime rib" and jerky for the table. The jerky was good but not worth the nearly $100 a pound price tag. When the steaks came out, all I saw were basically ribeyes and not a "prime rib." Steak lovers appreciate the obvious difference between a ribeye and prime rib. On top of that, the temp was wrong for 4 out of the 6 steaks. It was noted this place was a butcher shop but only 3 steaks were evenly cut while the others were awkwardly cut and completely uneven. They definitely "butchered" the steaks. We waited for about half an hour before she came to get us, saying "I totally forgot you guys were here!" Um, thanks. Then we wait 35 minutes for our food. We had to flag down a server to inquire. He brought out a steak frites + salad plate for me (correct), but he brought the incorrect entree for my sister who had ordered prime rib. We were already running behind schedule and couldn't risk requesting the proper order as we had tickets to a Broadway show after so we had to deal with it. Good quality meet but poorly and unevenly cooked (although other people's pictures looked somewhat better) my husbands meal looked like something out of a "how not to book."
