Get a reservation! We had none for lunch but they nevertheless accomodated us very kindly. The place was full around 12.30pm and everone seemed happy. A bit cramped with tables very close to each other, but that's how they do it in France. Food: Perfect Boeuf Bourguignon with a great sauce that had the right texture. Veggies cooked to perfection. Small, romantic place with a lovely ambiance. Friendly owner/chef and significant other (waitress/cashier). Fantastic food that makes me pinch myself that I'm in Albuquerque. I ate at this couple's restaurant when it was by the movie theater on I-25 and Jefferson. They moved to this location about five years ago, and the new location has much more character, and best for me, it's much closer to home. The bread was excellent. The house red wine was excellent, for my taste. The sole and the sea scallops were both excellent entrees. The side vegetables were excellent. And the creme brûlée was excellent to finish things off. Went to dinner yesterday evening at La Trouquet. My dinner companion and I had a lovely leisurely meal starting with salads -- dinner companion got the house salad and I got the beet salad. Both were fresh and delicious. The tomatoes on the beet salad were especially wonderful as were the beets -- yellow and purple. Bread was hot and fresh. We ordered the mussels and frites and the trout. Delicious, well seasoned and not overly salty. We selected an excellent bottle of Sancerre Jolivet to share and shared a lovely apple cake for dessert. Ian, our server, was personable and professional despite having to cover multiple tables in a tight space. The restaurant's ambience as others have noted transports you beyond Albuquerque to a small intimate bistro in a France. Very much a must go food destination in Albuquerque. If I could give higher than five stars I would give Le Troquet all the stars. Ben and I decided to give this place a try for our anniversary dinner, and after trying it I'm disappointing I've wasted so many fancy dinners NOT here. It's so incredibly fabulous I would marry Jean Pierre just to eat like that every night(sorry Ben). The french onion soup was amazing, perfectly seasoned, great bread, excellent cheese. Our main dishes were great, my husband had a puff pastry wrapped steak which was great. I had pork something something with sauce or something. I don't know what it was, but it was SO good. Like died and went to heaven good. The sauces were perfectly balanced, not salty, or overpowering, just a perfect compliment to the meat and potatoes. Lastly, the dessert was some of the best I've ever had. My husband had a creme brulee and I had a citrus tart. I don't even usually like citrus type tarts I only got it because it's my husbands favorite and I thought he'd want some. I ended up eating most of it. The food is really great and tasteful. It's one of the best escargot I've had. The moulea and frites are the perfect pair and seasoned well. My favorite was the vacherin dessert which is meringue with ice cream, raspberry jam with slices of strawberries and cream, topped with whipped cream made in house. While staying in a classy historic downtown hotel in Albuquerque, having tired of New Mexican cuisine after a week in Taos, we decided to seek out something that has become increasingly difficult to find in the mountain west, namely good French food. Le Troquet was just a two block walk, and not wanting to pull our rental suv out of the garage, we decided to take a chance on getting soaked from the monsoon clouds which filled the sky. We made it to the restaurant, which had a couple of tables open. And despite our not having made a reservation we were seated quickly in the small, quaint and a bit rustic dining room which held about 12 tables. Our server soon appeared an energetic and affable woman in her 40s who was a delight to meet. She offered us samples of some of the wines and we chose a nice Le Pive rose which seemed to be a good value at $30 for the bottle. To accompany that, we each ordered the tasty French onion soup, (listed in French on the menu of course), and as an appetizer we shared a serving of frogs legs, which I hadn't indulged in since a trip to France over twenty years ago. The frogs legs were lightly breaded and served with a light tomato, onion and I believe, carrot sauce. They were fresh and very tasty. The menu had a fine variety of choices but we went for a couple of the specials offered that day for our entrees. My choice was the roasted half duck, a la orange, which came with a hearty serving of broccoli raab, carrots and mashed potatoes. So tasty, but after the copious amounts of pre-entree food I had consumed I couldn't finish it all. My wife had the beef tenderloin wrapped in bacon which was an extremely generously sized serving as well. Having saved room for desert by having our entrees boxed (out hotel suite had a refrigerator) and prepared for our flight home, we ordered a dessert, the Crepe Suzette, which was covered with a deliciously buttery orange sauce. With our last glasses of rose, we finished of this fabulous meal of the best French cuisine I'd had in many years. read more

SO amazing! I'm not a tablecloth-fancy-restaurant kind of person. Usually the food at those places isn't worth the price, and I feel uncomfortable with the atmosphere. However...Le Troquet is not one of those places! Immediately upon entering you are made to feel welcome. The atmosphere is cozy, John (the waiter) is friendly, fun, and unpretentious. And the food ... wow!! Beautifully prepared and incredibly delicious. One of the best meals I've ever had. The prices are extremely reasonable. Even if you are on a budget you could order some soup, salad, dessert and have an incredible meal and experience for the same price as at some crappy chain restaurant. While were eating we saw a few people stop by and look at the menu posted outside, and then move on. WHAT?!? People, you are missing out if you don't give this place a try!! What a lovely evening. I stopped in for a glass of wine to wait for my folks to arrive on the train... Then when they arrived, I called the restaurant back to ask if they could still serve dinner for us, which John assured me they would. We ordered simple things, but so good. The mussels.. I made a reservation at this lovely restaurant to celebrate my friends birthday. Had I known that the owner/chef was not there, I probably would've postponed my visit. It was sad to hear that he has been ill and I hope he recovers very soon. The food is expensive so you expect perfection but it just wasn't. The last time I visited a few months ago it had been fabulous. My friend and I both ordered the trout, which was a very odd color, pink not white and it had no flavor and was dry. The rice dish on the side had no flavor. My friend ordered the crème brûlée for dessert and she said it was more like a pudding than a Brulé. She was very disappointed. She said it also tasted like canned whipped cream not the real thing. I ordered the chocolate mousse, which was very light in color and was ok, but again not great. I won't be returning unless I know for sure that the wonderful owner/chef will be back and cooking. My best to you Chef. read more

This has to be the best French restaurant in Albuquerque. We had the lemon chicken and the hanger steak. Piping hot and delicious. The Vichysoise was equally wonderful as was the dessert, strawberries marinated in Grand Marnier and topped with chantilly cream. We had the flat iron steak au poivre and beef en croute. Both were excellent. We got salads, appetizer and dessert too. We figured Easter was a good day for feast. I started with the pate and my wife started with the beet salad. Absolutely delicious, both of them. Then my wife had the sea bass. It was a very large portion. I had the lamb chops and they were perfectly cooked. Then she had a coffee dessert that was delicious. I had the creme brulee. Overall not that impressed. Bread was warm but not as soft inside as would be desirable. Had the duck a l'orange and the sauce needed more tartness and less sweetness. I've been in Albuquerque twice in my life and went to this restaurant both times. It's no fluke, this place is fantastic. Great chef making outstanding French food. As my colleague just said "I love that one of the best French restaurants I've ever been to is in Albuquerque!". The atmosphere and decor is charming as well. Also, I asked for my meal without salt (which is challenging at most restaurants) and this meal was among the most delicious unsalted meals I've ever had. Always a win with me. Recommend the Pork Tenderoin Marsala and my colleague is still raving about the Lobster Thermador. Every trip to Albuquerque I will stop by this place. And recommend it to all. read more

The service was good. French food might not be my thing. I tried frog legs for the first time. It does not taste like chicken. It tasted like a mutant hybrid of fish and chicken. I did not personally like it. The beef onion was okay. It tasted like beef stew. There wasn't anything impressive about it. With the price I and the rating I expected better. I did see Ken Leung eating there. Was super confused. When leaving he confirmed who he was to the waitress but he probably did that to appease me because I was talking really loudly about it. A date with my valentine was so special at Le Troquet! The ambience was so romantic, including candles and flowers on the table, the romantic French music and even the energy in the room from the quiet conversation from nearby tables. The food was excellent (boeuf en croute and duck) as was the French wine and we couldn't resist the vacherin for dessert, which was quite sweet, but the fresh strawberries were such a delight! A Tiny little French Bistro in the heart of Albuquerque, Le Troquet is French food done right. I am a CIA trained chef and a Francophile when it comes to food. I have had some good experiences in a few other French restaurants in town, but nothing compares to this. I made reservations (recommended) for my sister's birthday. Our party of four was seated at a nice table, next to the window, and our server, Michelle, immediately introduced herself and distributed menus. Throughout the meal, she was exceptional, both friendly and professional. She was also knowledgeable about the food, something of a rarity in New Mexico, especially when it comes to French food. Our meal started with warm, fresh dinner rolls, quickly followed by shared appetizers of Escargot, Pate Maison, and a Smoked Herring Plate. Each appetizer was exceptional. The Escargot were not overcooked, another rarity in New Mexico. They were tender and garlicky enough to be interesting without diminishing their earthy flavor. The Smoked Herring, not one of my favorites usually, was delicate and not fishy. It had a deliciously light smoky flavor, and was so good that I would contemplate ordering it at my next visit. But then we had the Pate Maison! What a truly delicious pate, perfectly balanced and served with a full-grain mustard, paper thin onions, and a handful of intense little cornichon pickles. One caveat on the service of this pate though. If you order it, try a bite with the hot yeast rolls. The warmth and flavor of the bread intensifies the flavor of the pate and elevates it from "good" to an "out of this world" experience. No sooner had we completed our smorgasbord of appetizers, than our entrees arrived. Two members of our party order the Carre Dagneau (lamb chops), one had the Dover Sole Milanaise, and I had the Boeuf en Croute. We ordered a compromise bottle of wine for the whole table, and settled on a Chateau St. Michelle Riesling (one of my favorites). Now, about the food: This chef knows good food and knows how to prepare it. First of all, the ingredients he chooses are truly exceptional. One of the side dishes was a tomato provencale. I usually consider this a throw away item. However, the tomatoes for this dish were so delicious that I was humbled by the experience. The intensity of the actual tomato flavor was something that I have not experienced since I was a child, eating fresh heirloom tomatoes from our garden. The chef obviously knows how to pick the best vegetables, and he must demand the best from his distributors. The flavor was so exceptional, that I would contemplate ordering just Tomatoes Provençale for my entrée. Delicious! As for the rest of the entrees? The lamb chops were tender, perfectly prepared and quite frankly, the best lamb chops I have ever had in my life. The Dover Sole? It was good, but compared to the lamb and my Boeuf en Croute, it was not my favorite dish. But what about the Boeuf En Croute? All I can say is that it was a triumph of cooking! The tenderloin itself was cooked just shy of medium rare and was the absolutely, the most tender cut of beef that I have ever enjoyed, Combine that with a perfectly seasoned mushroom duxelle, and the most delicious, buttery, pastry crust and a remarkable and inspired sauce, and this dish was impeccable. As for the desserts, we tried the chocolate mousse and the crème brulee. Both dishes were rich in the French tradition of real cream and sugar and eggs. These are desserts to cherish and enjoy. All in all, dinner at Le Troquet is quite simply a culinary "Event". The chef has an obvious love of food and prepares everything with a respect that is frequently lacking, especially in today's world. The menu is pricey, but considering the quality of the food, I would be willing to pay even more. From the food, to the service, to the ambience, Le Troquet is truly a magical culinary experience. read more

I write this review with a heavy heart. I expected to love our dinner. I wanted to love our dinner because I love French food and have fond memories of the chef's previous eateries. I did love this new location. I did love the quaint very Frenchish atmosphere. But I didn't love our dinner. I didn't hate it. It was ok. Definitely not bad. The dinner that is. The service ... it bordered bad I'm sad to say. Friendly, but unsophisticated and seemingly unsanitary. The food was good at best. We had the beet salad, escargot, and beef Wellington. None of it was exceptional and the entree was served on a nuclear temperature plate (indicating it sat under heat lamps for too long). It is possible that they were simply having an off night so we will try this restaurant again, but probably not without giving them more time to train the staff and work out the kinks. read more

We had a lovely dinner at Le Troquet, a very cozy downtown French restaurant. We made a reservation the day before for 7pm, and even though the restaurant was only half full when we arrived most of the tables seemed to have been reserved. I think it would be very difficult to just walk in and get a table on a Friday or a Saturday. We order the cheese plate to start and enjoyed the crispy hot roll to start with the cheeses, fruit, and walnuts. I wish the waitress had a least identified the cheese (I know a blue cheese from a cheddar from a brie, but it would be nice to have someone tell you what you are eating). For the entrée we had the beef bourguignon (very tender and savory) and the pork (not as flavorful). The waitress did get the entree's switched when she delivered them but we quickly switched them back. Overall the food was reasonable and the service was a little slow and distracted. The ambience is really what you are getting here, with a very intimate feeling restaurant. If you are not in a hurry and want to enjoy some upscale French food, this place fits the ticket. I'd probably only come back for special occasions so that I can head to some of the other downtown spots afterward. read more

My friend and I accidentally went right before they closed at 1:45. We didn't realize this was the case until the closing sign was slapped over loudly. The server was nice with undertones of annoyance which I completely understand. What I don't understand is why my meal was obviously sitting under a heat lamp for at least 20 minutes. It was awful to say the least. My suggestion to the owner would be politely tell customers that you are closing and cannot serve them.
