This was my favorite of the three restaurants I tried in Chicago's Chinatown Square last month. We ordered (don't know the actual name, but it consisted of) beef with vegetables on top of a layer of fried flat noodles that were stuck together -- and fried tofu. The former dish was really great. I enjoyed the fried texture of the noodles. The tofu was good as well. I also ordered a watermelon smoothie. Our Family went here to dine, the second time I have been here because we like the food the first time we ate here. The food was fine, no issues until it came time to pay. I usually round up the check using the tip to make an even dollar amount. One person in our party paid me directly for their meal and I based my tip on 4/5ths of the bill.The waitress commented to me that I did not leave enough tip!! What!! How rude. I did not have a good experience at this restaurant. I was dining with a friend. There are a few positive items I would highlight: - they were very accommodating of my friend having a small dog with her and allowed us to sit outside with the dog - service was quite fast Unfortunately, we were served an appetizer with raw shrimp in it. When we realized this we had already eaten a portion of the appetizer. We asked the waiter about the appetizer and he immediately verified that there was indeed an issue and the food was raw. We sent back the raw food and did not ask for any replacement. The rest of our food came out but we were no longer interested in eating as we were worried about getting sick from the shrimp. When we expressed this to the restaurant we were told that they don't care and we should just 'go to the hospital' if we get sick. I was shocked at the lack of empathy and general decency. In addition, they forced us to pay for our meal even though we no longer wanted it or were going to eat it. They offered only a 15% discount and said that our complaints were the same as when people complain about not liking their food (even though we were voicing a safety concern which is very different) I will not be returning to this restaurant. read more

Great service, only had to wait about 7 minutes even though all the tables were full. Ordered sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken, shrimp fried rice, honey walnut shrimp and the tidbit appetizer. The best item here hands down is the shrimp fried rice, it is so fresh and flavorful. Next would be the sweet and sour chicken, which had a great meat to fruit/veggie ratio. Then the orange chicken which had lots of flavor. The honey walnut shrimp was good but wished they put more of the creamy sauce on it. I definitely will come here again, I traveled from the west suburbs and don't mind making the trip for this great place. SMOOTHIES We love visiting Chinatown and we make it an adventure by using the Chicago Water Taxi to arrive. It always feels like we are on vacation. One of the problems we have is that we have found our favorite places in Chinatown, so we don't really venture out and try new places. We were looking for desert, after dinner. We tried a bakery a few doors down from here and the cake was not very good. So we decided we needed a fresh watermelon drink to wash it down. We walked up to check out the menu and a lady immediately opened a window and asked what we wanted. It was great and efficient. We did not even have to walk into the restaurant. We decided to grab a fresh watermelon smoothie. The lady went behind the bar and started making our drink. We waited outside and our smoothie arrived very quickly. There is even a nice little shelf installed on the outside edge of the window. The prices were also great too. It was only $3 plus tax per smoothie. A few doors down there was another location and they were charging $4.45 plus tax per smoothie. That location was crowded. I wonder if these people knew they could save money a few doors down at this place. The watermelon smoothie was really good. In fact, I don't think I've ever had a bad watermelon smoothie anywhere. It is always refreshing and delicious. So I am happy to say we have a new stop added on to our Chinatown visits. Plus you can't beat the price of the smoothies too. Now it looks like this restaurant has a full menu. I can not comment on the food or what the experience is inside the restaurant. On so many levels, no. We only decided to eat here because there were a ton of Chinese people inside. You know how it goes - see a crowded Chinese restaurant filled with Chinese people, it's probably good. We walked in, the tables were lopsided. We were placed in the table next to the kitchen and already you can see so many health code violations. There was a white tub with like sludge-looking stuff right by the stove. Gross. The menu I received was sticky, but not like normal plastic Chinese restaurant menu sticky, it was gooey. Our food came out really quickly, almost too quickly. Everything was saturated in oil and salt. I ordered a dish of water spinach, and you could tell it was cooked without thought. One side of it was really salty but in the middle of the dish, it was so bland. What irritated me the MOST was when our check came out, we all put down our cards to pay. One of my friends mistakenly thought tip was included, and as the waitress so graciously pointed out, "You gonna put tip on the table? You know tip isn't included, right?" After he apologizes and proceeds to add a tip to his card, she goes around the table, grabs the receipt and examines the amount of tip we left. Like a previous Yelper mentioned, some dishes are okay and some are not. One thing I can always count on is the fruit smoothies with tapioca. They use real fruits here, not that artificial crap that gets pumped into the cup. My go-to smoothie is the watermelon one. My parents and I have tried multiple dishes, but one dish that I always order is the bok choy with garlic. One thing that's annoying about this restaurant is when it comes time to pay. The waitresses always seem to watch you like a hawk to make sure you pay and sign that check if you paid with a credit card. My dad once took his time to sign the check, and our waitress just stood right behind him and gave him the "You better sign your damn name on that check" look. There are so many restaurants in Chinatown. This is one that you would visit when you're hungry and don't really care what you eat or just want a smoothie. read more

It is a decent Chinese restaurant, a little overpriced compared to what else is available in Chinatown. It has been a name brand for many many years among the Asian American community in the surrounding area. Many of my friends who grew up in Chicago have fond childhood memories going to this restaurants with parents on the weekends. My friend and I came here one gloomy Saturday afternoon for lunner/dinch. Since this was the only restaurant in Chinatown Square that wasn't completely deserted or full of non-asians, we decided to give it a try. Great first impression! The host, and probably owner, was so friendly and greeted us super nicely. We sat down and I think they served us water/tea pretty instantaneously. They gave us a few minutes to peruse the menu. We each ordered a fruit shake. My friend got a mango-watermelon with boba (it's pretty sweet that they let you mix two flavors). She seemed to really like it. I got the coconut red bean and it was the most disgusting thing ever. So artificial and the red beans were like a kidney bean-red bean hybrid instead of Azuki beans! Not to mention they were hard and not paste-y at all. Not worth the $3.50 + tax and tip at all. I almost ordered from their liquor menu but refrained. It was the same price, if not cheaper, than the regular drinks. Seriously, a cosmo for $3!? Then, the waitresses started getting impatient. First of all, they gave us less than five minutes. I don't think we were taking that long. Secondly, the restaurant was over half empty. It was 4 pm, don't know what the rush was. Thirdly, like many Chinese restaurants, their menu is an overwhelming mess of dishes. Not my fault they decided to throw every possible combination of meat and vegetables on there. Finally, no matter how long a customer is taking, it is just plain inhospitable for the server to just stand by the table and stare at us while we ordered, especially since we had already bought drinks. I got the beef with black bean sauce and my friend got the orange chicken. She seemed to like it. I'd say my dish was mediocre at best. It was really sweet and tasted like a crappy $5 dollar lunch special at your local take-out joint. Very non-authentic and greasy. Definitely not worth over $10. During the middle of our meal, half the restaurant got those special weather alerts on their phones and it started pouring. It was still pouring when we finished and they couldn't get rid of us quickly enough. Neither of us had umbrellas and half their tables were empty! So I don't see why they had to be so rude about making us leave. I paid $20 for a gross meal. They didn't even pack up our food completely so it spilled out all over our bags and we ended up just tossing everything when we got home. Don't come here, I know I won't ever again. read more

Lee Wing Wah is my favorite place in Chicago Chinatown to eat a non-dimsum meal at a very reasonable price. The food is consistently good, and there are so many options to meet anyone's taste. As you walk in, you're welcomed by some crab/lobster tanks and as such, the seafood is quite fresh. Here's my not-so-insider tip for eating here: There's this special lunch menu (that is only in Chinese). If you can get your hands on this lunch menu (and if you can't read Chinese, maybe try a translating app?), then you are in for a treat. The dishes are all regular menu items but at a lower price (~$6-8) with smaller portions than what you'd get with the full priced dish. It really only includes items that are more traditional Chinese dishes (i.e. Salt & Pepper Shrimp, fish in black beans, etc). And, because of the price and portions, you get to try a lot of different dishes. The service here has actually improved over the years. But, if you're looking for fine dining with a server that has a constant smile on their face making gentle suggestions for their favorite dishes, then this is not the place. I think that's part of the experience, though. What you will always get is delicious, authentic Cantonese food with lightening fast service. I think that's more than worth my time and money. read more

But, my friend knew exactly what she wanted as she's been here many times before. We ordered the peapod dish (which resembled watercrest or chinese broccoli), the salt and spicy squid and the tilipia. One of the waitresses busted out a little net, brought it to the fish tank...and pulled out our tilipia. Add one star for freshness. All of the food was delicious. Excellent. That squid was mouth-watering fabulous. The portions are so huge that we had some left over to be wrapped up. We stayed a little past 10 and I think they were on the verge of kicking us out. But, we took the hint and left. The food here is fab, but the service is eh - so just go in there not expecting anything stellar. read more

Ordered walnut shrimp, potstickers, crab rangoon, singapore noodles, and stuffed duck. Of 5 items, only one approached edible. The walnut shrimp was delicious. Everything else was horrible. The noodles were dry and pasty, the potstickers were thick and doughy with hardly any meat inside, the crab rangoon had almost no filling also, and the stuffed duck was rubbery, salty, and the stuffing had zero flavor. I wouldn't have written this review, except that when I called them to ask for a partial refund, they said I had to bring the food back in to get the credit. I said I had the food and would do that, and they back-peddled and told me they would not help me. That they always make the food like that (not something I would have said at that point), and that they were not willing to accommodate me for having different taste than someone else. I paid $66.17 counting on-line ordering fee and they refused to give me any credit at all. I was very nice on the phone, asking only for partial credit, and asking that they make some kind of gesture. When they refused, I thanked them for their time and hung up to write this review. Unfortunate situation with no cooperation from management after a bad experience. They claim this is the standard of their food. If this is the standard, then I urge you to go somewhere else. I am out almost $70, and we ate cereal for dinner. read more

HUGE portions, and they make a stiff cocktail for an unbeatable price!! I love coming here to sip on some $4 Mai Tai's and stuff myself. I always have leftovers, and I always eat them immediately when I get home without haste. Service is OK, atmosphere = nothing fancy or inviting, but the pro's definitely outweigh the cons.. Chinatown Square is densely populated with Chinese restaurants, and this one is an unsung establishment. Actually I always forget the name, so perhaps writing this blurb will help me remember it! This place does not have a catchy name to draw in the tourists, so it just relies on its solid lineup of food selections. The restaurant has two levels, with cozy booths taking up much of the main level and larger tables upstairs for banquets. How have I not reviewed this place before? Man, I've been eating here for ages now. It seems like whenever anyone gets married or has a baby, the family is in for a banquet. It's also a favorite for birthday celebrations. I haven't ever had anything I hated there. Everything is good. When we entered the restaurant was empty. 10 minutes later one huge family came and secured every table on the lower level. It was hilarious. At any rate, the food here was pretty good! Best crab rangoons I have had in Chinatown! Eggrolls were iffy however...and so were the potstickers. I ordered the salt and pepper chicken. Not sure what I was expecting but what I received underwhelmed me a little. There was no sauce and not much juice to the chicken. The only seasonings were literally salt and pepper. This place is deplorable. First, the service was horrible. I went when there was almost no one in the restaurant, and yet it took them 5 minutes to make me one of their fruit smoothies. I had ordered the coconut red bean tapioca, which at other restaurants, I have enjoyed. But not this restaurant! All the beans were frozen solid, and all the ice had clumped together. Essentially, I felt as if I was drinking just coconut milk. Second, the ambiance is horrible. Their tables employ makeshift pieces of wood for the spinning tray. On top of that, they use cheap plastic sheets to cover their tables for easy clean-up. How un-classy is that? Overall, the place looked somewhat tacky. The only redeeming feature of this restaurant is that some of the food isn't that bad. My group ordered a lot of dishes, and a couple of them tasted very decent, but not good enough to be in my recent memory. I do remember, however, tasting the saltiest piece of imitation crab meat I had ever had. read more

Portion sizes are huge, and the entrees are both delicious and authentic. Came here with the bf and ordered just two entrees (we didn't even finish one by the end of the meal), the tofu fish pot and the Pork belly with meigan. The pork belly was definitely flavorful and sweet with pseudo meigan (don't expect the meigan in china, I think it's almost impossible to find the ingredient in the US), and they gave us a huge portion of meat with a higher fat to meat ratio than I was used to (even for pork belly!). The dish was itself extremely worthwhile to get, but probably not a good thing to eat with the other entree we ordered (the fish tofu) because of its heaviness and the amount of oil they put in each dish. The fish tofu was also ingenious, they actually put the fish inside of each piece of tofu, and added several stalks of bokchoy to add color to the dish. Tip: if you get the meigan pork belly (or any pork belly dish here), save half of it (lets be honest...its a lot of fat to eat in one sitting anyways) and use it to make pork noodles. The umami from the pork fat and the sweetness of the meigan will give your noodles the flavor of tonkotsu ramen broth! 4 stars because although the quantity of the food and the taste was pretty good, the dishes were all extremely oily (too much even for a Chinese restaurant) and they only give one small bowl of rice per person (so you could not go for seconds if you wanted to). It's been a while since I came in here after the restaurant shifted ownership. Rumor has it that the food is getting better. I came in here with a party of six and we ordered the dinner for 8. It's quite surprising for the price that we pay (a good $100) and we do not get a hefty crustacean! Usually a dinner for five & above would feature a seafood dish (lobster, crab, and/ or shrimp). This place is NOT WHEELCHAIR FRIENDLY for big party dinners. Huge party dinners are hosted on the second floor. If you enter the restaurant in hopes to get to the second floor, you may want to consider otherwise. There is an elevator to bring you to the second floor, yet it is a long detour to get in to the restaurant. You will need to inform the owner that you need accessible assistance (simply ask to have second floor unlocked since it is an emergency exit). Atmosphere: 3. It's pretty average and did not change much from previous ownership. If anything, it's gotten a lot quieter. Decor: 4. This place has been remodeling and trying to upkeep a lot of things. There is new decor of plastic flowers in a small vase. There is an upper level and it has been slightly more decorated as compared to before. Service: 3. Being a relatively busy place it is understandable to experience some delays. I enjoyed seeing my water being filled but not when I have to take a whiff from an armpit when I get it back... It can be worse. I guess they are working on it. Food: 3. The food is pretty average in my opinion. I did some changes they made to their menu. For the "family dinners" you can change whichever dish you want, but you have to replace it with the given items. [If you want to make your money's worth you should refrain from ordering tofu dishes. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Lee Wing Wah in Chinatown Square on a warm summer evening. We sat outdoors at tables that were carefully spaced with attentive, but appropriately distanced staff , making sure that our experience was pleasant and and the food delicious. We started with egg rolls - hot, crisp and flavorful with just the right proportions of tasty fillings. For entrees we shared Kung Pao Chicken and Mongolian Beef. The Kung Pao Chicken was prepared extra spicy at our request, and it was perfect! The chicken was tender with nicely crunchy fresh green peppers in a sauce that wasn't over powering. The Mongolian Beef sat on a nice fluffy bed of dried rice noodles. The beef was tender and rich, with onions and scallions in a brown sauce that was nicely tangy. The food was served piping hot with almost no waiting time at all. The only thing slightly off was that we had paper plates and plastic silverware, as an added protective measure for the pandemic. We asked for chopsticks, which were easier for us than the plastic forks. It was so nice to see Chinatown bustling with happy families and couples after several months of quiet empty sidewalks. TLDR: RAW SHRIMP AND NEGATIVE EXPERIENCE This is really difficult for me to write, because I'm very conflict averse and a nice person (I've only left 4-star reviews before as you can see), but people should know before choosing this restaurant. We were served a dish with raw shrimp that we only realized was raw after eating half and realizing it was cold and still gray inside. We immediately asked the waiter and he said it looked uncooked and they could "heat it up". We asked him to please cancel it. We then wanted to speak to someone just to check in and really highlight how serious a mistake this was and were told we should go to the hospital if we feel sick, and the cold response was a bit upsetting. The manager then came out to talk to us and offered 10% off and said "We can't do much more. So many people don't like their dish and return it, he threw it away so I can't even see it". It was so upsetting because here we were stressed about our health, and they were comparing us to people who return dishes they don't like them. For crying out loud, if I wanted my money back and was lying I'd have complained about the $16 dish not the $4 one. I came here for a rehearsal dinner on Saturday. I think I was in grade school at my last visit. They have revamped the interior which is nice. The servers themselves were fine. The food was alright. I accidentally left without getting my parking validated so I came back in and asked politely. Two women who were prepping mangoes had the most blasé facial expressions. Wow, Lee Wing Wah did not disappoint! The honey walnut shrimp is a must order. It was flavorful, fresh, and tasted exquisite. I tend to overuse sauces so I did wish they added a little bit more sauce, but it was great regardless. I also recommend the beef chow fun (not pictured), especially if you are more of a noodles than rice person. The outer circle of their chow fun noodles is crispy, which I haven't experienced before but am absolutely enthralled by. I went with friends and am usually not a fan of tofu, but the tofu pictured was fun to eat! Maybe it's because I don't enough greens, but I preferred the bok choy in the tofu dish over the steamed vegetable dish we ordered. Overall, it was a great dinner restaurant to go to with friends. My friend suggested me to stop at this place whenever I was in Chinatown.So I took my parents to this place for lunch. From outside this restaurant does not give a very good feel. But once you go inside you realise that this place is big and nice. We ordered Crab Ragoon, Chicken Fried Rice, Chicken Lo Mein and Schewan Chicken.Let me tell you the portions are big. We had take the food to go at the end of our meal.The food was good except the Lo Mein which I think was little bland. They serve a complimentary kettle of traditional Chinese tea which I like a lot.Don't forget to try the fruit smoothies, they are awesome. There are plenty of better places to eat in Chinatown. This place has been consistently inconsistent. Some dishes are okay, some are not so okay. Sometimes I'll have a great meal here. Sometimes I'll end up having something that just fills me up but leaves me unsatisfied. Definitely do not get the Ma Po Tofu. Generally I don't order this when I go out, but the one here was pretty unsatisfactory. The Chow Fun was really good though! And the seafood I've had here has been pretty good. My family and I came here for my birthday and I was trying my best to be positive about anything and everything that day since it was my birthday. However ever since we walked in there, there were dirty dishes by the hallway, the place was so loud that I couldn't even hear my brother who was sitting a cross from me, half of my noodles were cold and half were hot. The Singapore noodles was just not consumable so we left at it like that on the table. The vegetables were oily and filled with salt. The waitress seemed like she was annoyed because we ordered more than three items. After every order she kept asking me "that's it right?" and when I asked her if we can have 2-4 wonton soups she suggested one bowl is enough but there were 5 of us. I always drive here on a weekday mid-afternoon to get my fix of their outstanding Buddha Duck. It's been my favorite duck dish in Chinatown for years. The duck is perfectly executed with tender succulent breast slices and yummy crispy skin plus at least five vegetables, including black mushrooms, wood ear mushrooms, and occasional lotus root, not to mention book choy, carrots, pea pods, and onions.
