I came back to try their bento boxes. I got the A set. I wish they had pictorials on each of their bento boxes so I could see what my options are. But if you speak Chinese you'll have no problem with their description. I just got the first one, the A set and it was pretty amazing. It's English description is Pork. It was a shredded pork simmered in a soy sauce base w preserved vegetables. (May Tsai). The sides were a tofu and celery mix, fried egg, and sliced and simmered squash or cucumber. It was very Simple and tasted like a home cooked meal. Totally reminded me of Taiwan and my moms cooking. It came out super fast too and just the right amount of food. If it weren't for Yelp, I would have never realized that the plaza this restaurant was located in even existed. I'm glad I discovered it though. Really good home-y Taiwanese food here. Their stinky tofu was pretty stinky (which is a good thing), and the dipping sauce accentuated the tofu's flavor. The deep fried pork chop over rice was pretty good. I particularly enjoyed the side veggies, especially the pickled one that I don't think I've tried before. This is coming from someone who generally doesn't like pickled things. Their oyster pancake was amazing though! I think what made it stand out from the other oyster pancakes I've eaten elsewhere would be the sauce. Loved the sauce so much! Props to them! The food here is really inexpensive as well! Epitomizing the definition of a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, Lee's Garden services many regulars, especially Chinese speakers, and those looking for a quick to-go meal. So for two mainly-English speakers such as me and my friend, we found it a little bit challenging to talk to the owner who did genuinely seem like a nice guy, but one whom we found a language barrier with. The scrawled-on-wall menu -- and only one available -- was a refuge, but only because we were lucky enough to sit right next to it. Feeling a bit peckish but not enough for a combo meal, I ordered the fried chicken legs, which were accompanied by a bowl of homey vegetable noodle soup. The crunchy breading on the chicken had a nice flavor to it, but I noticed that one or two of the pieces that I got was mostly just fried bones... super lame!! My friend's pork chops were also quite nice as well, good-sized pieces and extra tasty! Both items came around to around $7-$8. Cash only. Overall, I enjoyed the homestyle food offered here, but the atmosphere kind of dampened my experience and the service was okay. First of all, the owner here is really a PORK CHOP NAZI; my friend's been going to this place for 20 years (even taught his kids art) but this son of a gun wouldn't give him extra helping of their magic, chili sauce to go. EVER. Plus, when I was eating there, he told me NOT to waste the sauce in mandarin (I'm korean) because I poured a heaping spoonful over my pork chop. I finished it of course. With that out of the way, this place is THE JOINT for the BEST ******* PORK CHOP EVER IN THE ENTIRE CALIFORNIA. In fact, I bet to wager best asian pork chop in the STATES. If there was one pork chop to rule them all, this would be it. If you're looking for authentic Taiwanese food, this place is money. Yes it's ghetto and yes it's probably dirty as hell but if you've ever gone to Asia you'll notice that the best food comes from the nastiest looking restaurants. It's served with oyster sauce, this spicy garlic chili sauce, and pickled vegetables. The tofu has a nice crunchy crust on the outside and semi-firm on the inside. Tastes night and day compared to the smell. The pork chop rice is bomb too! It's thin slices of pork chop fried with this spice batter over rice with this awesome sauce. It also comes with vegetables, tofu, tea egg, and another side. If you've never come here before, you usually walk in and go straight to the counter to order. We wanted to go to Chengdu Taste but the line and wait was outrageous, so we looked for somewhere else to go close by and this was what we settled on. There was no line and you could tell that this is where the locals go. There is a handwritten menu on the wall, and the owner was super friendly and helped us out. It feels like you're eating at somebody's house, which is nice and homey. The prices are reasonable and the portions are plentiful. We got the hot and sour soup, which was plenty for 5 people. The fried pork chop and fried chix thighs over rice were the biggest hits. As my friend said, "I'm never going to KFC ever again!" The sides that come with the meal are delicious. The beef noodle soup was not the best but ok. Plus, there is a small free parking lot. Coming here as a small child with my parents on their "mah jong" break since the 80s, this place has not changed a bit and I've come to truly appreciate authentic homemade "Taiwanese" food here in LA (an art form that has been lost through globalization and corporate franchising). The (orginal) owner has not changed his recipe, nor the quality of the food. Perhaps the only thing that has changed is the pricing via inflation, but the food is still considered reasonably cheap for what you get. The stinky tofu and pork chop rice is as close as "Taiwan" gets in LA. Miss those old "bento" days? Their lunch and dinner (order by A, B, or C, etc) sets will truly make you reminiscence the good ol days in Taiwan. Don't expect a fancy decor nor 5-star service, and bring cash--this place is simple. Lee's still looks like the way it did since the 80s; with the florescent lighting and wobbly tables--but if you know how to appreciate good Taiwanese food, this should not matter to you. So before you decide to waste your time and frustration going to the next "626 Night Market" in hopes of eating some authentic stinky tofu, come by Lee's first and save yourself the headaches. read more

I've been eating here since 1990, and I'm glad to say the food has remained the same all these years. Its simply the best traditional Taiwanese food around. I never get to sit in the restaurant to eat, but I think the food would actually taste even better if I did because of the little plastic trays with the little compartments, coupled with the greasy tables and chairs and floors, would make the experience that much more authentic. My favorite dish is the 'K' rice plate, because its the one with a little bit of everything in it. Another dish is the Fried Chicken Thigh rice plate, the batter of the fried chicken is light, crispy, and better than any fried chicken I've come across. Don't forget to add some of the chili sauce they have in the cups on the tables. The stinky tofu could be stinkier, but I think he pissed off the health department one time back in the 2000's and its never been quite the same after that. There are other trendier Taiwanese food places, which also taste great, but this place just has that secret something that keeps me coming back, I think its something about the rice. Now if only the owner would cook Taiwanese breakfast items too... one can only wish. Also, no iced milk tea at this Taiwanese joint. Its a traditional honest family restaurant, the owner even chooses to close on Sundays, tradition over profits for a change. In-N-Out Burger you're not alone! read more

It's been here for years that I forgot when it was opened: "...since 1984". I was a little, little girl that I remember this place was introduced by my mom's friend. Got that folks? That's how you yelp in SGV for places to eat. A lot (I believe) would know that many restaurants in SGV comes and go. This place is still standing. You come for the food, but don't bring the food snob attitude. The manager is really nice. He's still the same. My mom had come here for years. Of course there are hook ups because we're usually his loyal customers. We're not Taiwanese, it doesn't matter, and shouldn't matter. Locals would sometimes run into the manager when it's his day off; small chat and such. The restaurant is in a shopping center. The parking lot doesn't have enough spaces for all the retail stores and restaurants so it the place can be packed on a busy time. It is a very small restaurant with about a handful of tables. Seems like people order to-go. This is a CASH only business. The menu is on the wall and it is mostly in Chinese. They have some English translation but unless you know what you're looking for, you're going to be lost. I had to use my mandarin skills and ask if they have certain Taiwanese dishes (I can speak Mandarin conversationally but I can't read or write....). I ordered the Pork Chop Rice (as recommended by many of the yelpers) and stinky tofu. Pork Chop Rice was decent. It costs around $6. It wasn't mind blowing but it was good comfort food. I would go back there again for it. Although their flavor and style is different, my favorite pork chop rice is from Tea Station. The Stink Tofu was decent as well. I prefer my stinky tofu to be extremely pungent. The flavor and smell was there, but not as strong as I preferred. I would still order it again though. It costs around $6. read more

In the history of San Gabriel Valley Chinese restaurants come and go like phases of the moon, serving their creations of shark fin and bird's nest for brief moments in time. Lee's garden has remarkably survived some 20 odd years despite being the most run down dingy hole in the wall restaurant you will ever have the pleasure of stepping into. Nothing has changed since I first visited near 20 years ago. There is the whiteboard menu sadly greeting you upon entrance. The owner is behind the faux wood counter with pen in hand ready to scribble your order. 75% of the people get some kind of the daily special meal set: You choose a main course of beef, chicken, fish, tofu, etc followed by random daily side dish pairings, rice and turnip soup. They never bother to translate the daily menu, so good luck if you're not a Chinese reader. Before I learned to read Chinese I'd just randomly pick a meat group and hope for the best. The other 25% of people get some kind of stinky tofu and noodle pairing usually. Once you order, you pick up your plastic utensils from the ancient grey bin, grab a cup to dispense yourself tea, and wait for the old asian lady (I assume it is the owner's wife), or big hispanic guy who understands restaurant chinese to bring you your order. I dare not look in the kitchen because I think it is probably not up to code. I remember 15 years ago seeing the owner peel tea eggs at a table over some newspaper and I promptly promised myself to never eat tea eggs there. I have since eaten tea eggs there. Don't let any of this deter you. The food is good. The pork chop rice is great. The stinky tofu appropriately pungent. The owner is an upstanding christian so there's occasional religious posters tacked up on the walls. Sometimes if you're really lucky you'll get to hear some classic musak cd compilations played from the owner's ancient CD player. Sometimes a place has to be so uncool it is cool. The owner was very nice to me when I visited him. What so special about this place is that this place has been around for more than 30 years. Most Chinese restaurants have been sold and resold over the years, and even if they still carry the same name, it would have already been thru different ownerships by now. Not this one! It's been owned and run by the same family for more than 30 years. What I can't believe is this, the owner recognizes me as soon as I walked in, and I live in Alaska. I had not been to that place for more than 20 years. Wow. I can't believe it. Very nice people! One more thing I like to add, I would like to thank them for serving the community for so many years. Running a restaurant is a lot of hard work! They've been feeding so many hungry people for many years. That takes a lot of stamina and determination. This place is a legend. I love coming to Lee's Garden. I've been going here since 1997 and even though I live all the way in Irvine, I will still drive over there whenever I crave some good Taiwanese food. Because of this restaurant no other Taiwanese restaurant can be compared. It's like I'm back in Taiwan. The food has a home-like feel to it and the price is just perfect for the generous portion size that they give out. At first I ordered the DEEP FRIED CHICKEN LEG (which are amazing, yelpers you should try these), but then I tired their FRIED RICE --- god-like! This one time my friends ordered a large amount of fried rice from here for a party, and lets just say I had the hardest time not eating when I was driving back to Irvine. Also I will recommend their daily special where they have combos from A,B,C,D,F,J,K,Q,S. These are amazing! Like I said before, they give very good portions - you will be extremely satisfied. Been getting their lunch sets since it was delivered to my chinese school for the summer when i was like in 4th grade. The food has always been good. I used to frequent this place with my parents when I still lived in Arcadia but since ive moved I hardly go unless im in the area. I love how they have like 3 dishes they change and the main dish you get to choose from the A-K menu. The food is good, fast, and decently priced. The main reason I come here tho is for the oh-a-jen (oyster pancake) this place has the best i've ever had in the states. It just so scrum-diddily-icious that I must order it. For lunch deals, you get rice, soup, a side of veggies, a fried egg, an additional random side (up to the chef's discretion), and a choice of protein all for around 8 dollars! That's what I call value. I was a little skeptical since our food came out on one of those styrofoam elementary school lunch plates but the food itself was delicious. I chose the combination of fried chicken and tofu and my mom got their 3-cup-chicken. We both ended up bringing leftovers home since we couldn't finish it.
