Really strange for a Thai restaurant. This last time I had the Pad Thai with chicken and shrimp. Even with the added hot sauce there was no flavor. The food at this place is superb. I highly recommend making a reservation as walk-ins often have to be turned away. My only critique would be that the wait for your food is quite long after ordering. The wait staff (very nice people) are well aware of that, though, and they try their best to keep you posted on progress. The atmosphere is lively though not deafening. Lemongrass is a staple of the area for special family events and date nights. The restaurant decor and atmosphere is dated, but it still retains its charm. We most recently visited on a Saturday night to celebrate a family birthday. Unfortunately, the hostess did not have our reservations in the book. They were able to seat us anyway, but it was a little cramped. Our cocktails came out quickly and were all delicious. We also ordered veggie and crispy spring rolls. They're still as tasty as ever! We put in our entree order shortly after our appetizers came out. Before the entrees came out, the rain kicked up outside, and the skylight was leaking. Unfortunately, my husband was sitting under the skylight. Our waiter was able to reseat us in their private dining room usually reserved for events. We ended up enjoying the private room experience, and our entrees were very good. The portions are pretty sizable and the plating is pretty. We also ordered dessert, and it was fantastic. Despite the seating hiccups I'm sure we'll be back. It's a family favorite and the food and service is always consistently good. We ate here last week and had a wonderful experience. The service was excellent, the food was fantastic, and it was fairly quiet without blaring music and noise. We had the special, a shrimp and scallops paella, that was very tasty and prepared perfectly. It included saffron rice and some Asian vegetables. For dessert, we had the ginger ice cream. We also waited about another 45 minutes for the order when it wasn't very crowded and all we ordered were a tom ka soup and pad see ew. Asian food doesn't take that long to cook, and it was hard for our 1 year old to wait so long for the dishes. The food itself was okay. The flavors were good, and it felt clean. I would have liked more thickness in my coconut soup and bigger portions for the price I paid, but overall, wasn't impressed. I also was a little skeptical because I didn't see one Asian person as a customer or in the back cooking at this Thai/Vietnamese restaurant. Would I go again? Not willingly. Was it that terrible? A fantastic date night/ early birthday celebration! My wife and I went to this great Asian-fusion-themed restaurant this past Saturday night to celebrate my birthday a little bit early. We had the lamb chops which were a ten out of ten, as was the rest of the meal We were made to feel very welcome by all starting with the engaging hostess, our waitress, Caitlyn and the whole crew. Excellent meal, with a bottle of Rombauer Chardonnay and a terrific dessert. What a wonderful evening! Congrats to Mai Pham for keeping this place consistently excellent. We will be back! read more

Wednesday, 2/02/2022 - Took my friend to Lemon Grass restaurant for her birthday/congratulations event tonight. I've been here once, like 5 or 6 years ago and absolutely loved the Thai Steak dinner with the peanut sauce. Restaurant is pretty inside. Upon arrival tonight: Pros: 1) plenty of parking. There's more parking spaces towards the back. 2) restaurant was very clean. Chairs, bowls, plates, napkins, utensils and cups all clean. 3) restaurant was quiet. 4) there's a bar. 5) food presentation was pretty. Water good. 6) Thai Steak dinner was ok. It wasn't medium rare as I requested. But it was still good. The peanut sauce that goes with the steak was very good with the steak. Steam veggies and rice were good. 7) the Lunar New Year special: Halibut dish was good. The sauce in the bowl made all the difference. Noodle in bowl good. They offer rambutan fruits at the end of our meal. 8) server checked in on us to make sure we didn't need anything else several times. 9) server was very nice and professional. Even offer to take our picture for us. 10) server even packed our food to go for us. 11) bathroom was very clean. 12) ambiance was nice. Cons: 1) they don't offer anything for the birthday person. But you can order dessert and they can put a candle on it for you, I was told. 2) parking was a little dark. 3) there seemed to be only 1 waiter. He was VERY busy running around waiting on the 4 or 5 tables I saw. 4) upon arrival, there was no one at the front to greet me. No signs that let's patrons know if they needed to check in, wait to be seated, or just go sit at any open table and they'll come serve you. I stood there for a while before someone came. 5) there's a $2.00 fee for extra peanut sauce. Wish they told me. Conclusion: Nice Restaurant. I like it. Very clean. Server very nice, but super busy. There was a good selection of entrees on the menu and we ordered our old favorites, the Cowboy Steak and Basa and the cocktails were very good also. We showed up right as they opened and we were received without a reservation and seated at the bar area. The restaurant is only open for dinner. After eating here, I understand why. This place is a fine dining Thai cuisine restaurant. If you like quality Thai food with a nice ambiance for date night, this is your place!! I ordered the lamb chops with vegetables. The fact that the lamb melted in your mouth and a butter knife was the only thing you needed says enough. Parking is available in the back. Unfortunately, the main bar server, she is a proven bigot, has shown repeatedly to be discriminatory against patrons who wish to dine in the open bar section that the bar tender greets, especially singles which the open bar seating is designed. I searched for this restaurant specifically and kept praying it would still be around. Twenty years later, this restaurant is still here. I came here when I had my first job out of college and was out with clients for a business lunch. I'm happy to report that I still love this place - food quality, ambiance, and service. I ordered the crispy spring rolls to start. They're smaller than other asian restaurants but they're fried perfectly and stuffed with yummy meat and veggies. They come with a small side of noodles and veggies too in case you want to wrap it to make it a little healthier. For entrees we got the pad thai and the warm beef with cold noodles - both without bean sprouts. Flavors were well balanced between savory and sweet. I liked that the pad thai came with chicken and shrimp. So prices have give up in the past twenty years, so the meal cost more. Overall it's a more expensive asian restaurant but I think it's very well worth it given the ambiance, quality, and service. I really hope this place never closes. I still have the cook book from my first visit here many years ago. I'm looking forward to coming back. read more

Where have I been all this time! This place is a hidden gem secretly tucked in Carmichael. Every single dish was delicious! Hit every note of my taste buds. No can sauces here! The curry was my favorite and I knew her sauce was homemade! Asked the owner myself to get the secret recipe, no luck . Another of my favorite dish was the shaken beef, mmmmmm grilled piece of tender meat, juicy and full of flavor tossed in a bed of greens. Been wanting to try this place for awhile and did not disappoint! I had the clay pot salmon with ginger, which was fantastic. The fish kid of melted in my mouth and the vegetables with it were fresh. My mom had the lamb chops with a hoisin-mushroom sauce and garlic noodles. She loved it. And my aunt had the pork medallions which were plentiful and looked juicy. We were greeted right away (though we did get there right when they opened) and seated. Their choices on their menu are pretty abundant and they had a few specials too. A Trip Down Memory Lane To celebrate the 88th birthday of a lifetime buddy is nothing short of exhilarating, inspirational and to me even therapeutic. Doug was a crack up, a role model and most endearingly, a foodie like me. He introduced me to Lemon Grass over 20 years ago where we had countless good meals and fun times. We haven't done so in recent memory and the other night, I decided in a NY minute to reunite with him for his b/day! Sadly though, we both harbor the same thought that this may well be our last meal together. The exterior of Lemon Grass looked well kempt like it has always been. The warm glow of the interior lights beckoned me in to a clean, chic and semi-swanky interior, not overdressed like an old kitschy souvenir shop. The always bubbly and friendly owner, Mai Pham, still holds the reins. Born in Vietnam, raised in Thailand and educated in the US, she is singularly qualified in both cuisines. That put her in good stead to juxtapose the idiosyncratic local likes and dislikes with the availability of local ingredients. Knowing how fastidious she is, she spared no effort to get the ingredients her restaurant needed like kaffir lime, Asian basil and Viet coriander etc from private sources. Kudos to Mai for her cookbooks and talk shows. We were just absolutely thrilled that she dropped by to say hello after all these years. To be honest, the dinner got off to a dismal start; the Lemon Grass Soup (tom kha gai) ($5 bowl) didn't quite hit the spot. The flavor of coconut milk was overwhelming and I detected some staleness, blaming that maybe to my long nose! We would have preferred tom yum goong, which wasn't available (3/5) The rest of the dinner was pretty phenomenal. One of Mai's secrets that continually knocked my socks off was her killer sauce or shall I just say that certain "je ne sais quoi". Call it crack if you like, as that sauce is hard to replicate, is ubiquitous in most of her dishes and bursting with all the original Thai/Viet flavors: 1. Sweet, but not overly, 2. Salty, again not overly, 3. Aromatic, a mind-boggling fragrance of lemon grass, lime and fish sauce 4. Sour but just enough to boost your appetite, 5. Heat customized to your preferred level. We had a traditional Thai Chicken Salad (Laab Gai) ($12.50), which brought LG's larb flavors back as we remembered. It wasn't so much the minced chicken as the lemongrass tamarind vinaigrette on the salad that was memorable. The taste was refreshing, clean and tangy with a touch of heat. (4/5) Pay attention! This next dish should be in your bucket list if it's not already! Mama Basa Claypot (Ca Who To) ($16.95) is unequivocally the best thing that happened since mankind invented claypot! As far as we remember, we have ordered this every time with absolute predictability. A well-known Viet home style cooking according to Mai, she used to use catfish and has now replaced it by a white, mild tasting, flaky and firm textured Basa. It had none of the muddy taste of catfish. All I can say is to sink your teeth into the Basa fillets, which were simmered in caramelized garlic fish sauce and not to forget the mandatory bowl of rice. A plate of steamed veggies on the side added a nice and healthy touch. (5/5) As a special for the evening, our server recommended Seafood Green Curry (Kaeng Kien Wan) ($24.50) and this was another winner. I didn't have a problem with the coconut milk this time. The Thai coconut green curry seafood soup was infused with aromatic lemon grass and was outstanding in spite of the somewhat unexciting usual suspects of mussels, scallops and shrimps. Adding Kabocha Squash however wasn't just for good measure. It did elevate the green curry to a new level and stamp it uniquely Lemon Grass. (5/5) It was a memorable evening albeit tearful towards the end. Doug has dementia and I am battling cancer. Till we meet again........Someday, Somewhere....... read more
