Wow, I'm sorry all of the Travelzoo deal participants seem to have had such a disappointing experience, because that is not the Lex Restaurant that I know at all. I come for dinner, and whether it is at the table or at the bar, I have always found the service knowledgeable and accommodating. Plus, I love the food! For appetizers, I've had their soups and salads (and on occasion the entree salad) and for entrees, I have had fish, pasta and chicken and I've never come away disappointed. The portions are generous - you won't leave hungry! The clientele does skew older, alot of times for pre-92Y event eats, am perhaps I don't come at their prime times, but I've never been rushed. They are also generous with the wine pours and don't be surprised to look at your check and find that they haven't charged you for every glass! read more

We came here for lunch last week after walking by this restaurant for years. The waiter was very attentive...but we were the only people there at the time so I don't know how the service is "at rush hour". My husband had fish (bronzini) and he said that it was very tender and tasty. I had "whatever the chicken special" was that day....and it was very good. I took my family on Valentine's Day.. First time there and won't be my last. Atmosphere was so intimate and owner treated us like family as we walked threw the door with taking out coats off our backs and hanging them up for us. Food was outstanding. Great portions. Great service. Great pricing. Looking forward to our next adventure there. All I can say is try everything once. That's how we did. No complaints. Greatly disappointing experience, total luck of originality or style when it's comes to food/drinks and interior of the place. The salad nicoise was very underwhelming, it seems the owner or the kitchen staff have ever seen the nicoise salad, they've only heard about it. Both my friend and I ate there last week. We both ordered the veal special $27. The veal was overcooked and not a good cut of veal. We had a caesar salad -it was Ok nothing special for the price. I liked the food. The pasta was great. The chicken dish was well portioned. They are charging $23.95 for chicken cutlet entrees. The price for that dish should never exceed $18.95. The owner should go to other classy Italian restaurants and look at their menu and notice that chicken dishes never exceed $20. The apple tart was fantastic and the crust was made with real butter. The good is great. My only issue is that the prices are on some items are significantly too expensive. read more

Ragu meats Chef Boyardee. I have had better meals from a microwave. The food at this upper east side eatery was perfectly mediocre truly capturing that out of the jar defrosted taste. Chicken parmigiana had dry meat, moist sauce, and what I could only guess was packaged cheese. The veal Milanese was thin as paper with more breading then veal and crisp as burnt bacon. When this was pointed out to the guy in charge it was whisked away, I opted not to select any other food and grabbed two slices on the way home. Whomever prepared this meal lacked the skill to make it and the judgement not to serve it. If this place is still in business in six months I would be shocked. read more

I had never noticed this restaurant until a friend, who is a regular, brought me here. I am very impressed. The food is truly excellent--flavorful, fresh, and inventive--and the staff is friendly and helpful. It's basically a neighborhood restaurant, but the white table cloths, the handsome dinnerware, and the festive presentation of the plates make it special enough for a night out. Last night I had the eggplant rollatini, with a rich cheese filling and a lovely fresh tomato sauce, and the crab-stuffed salmon with a fresh corn butter sauce (a special of the day). I went there because of the travelzoo coupon. The food is just ok. Dessert is horrible. We ordered carrot cake and ice cream. Carrot cake is like days old. I don't think the owner or the restaurant like people use the coupon. Btw, even you don't have coupon, it is the same price. So why bother to go with travelzoo. Some friends of mine went there for lunch. It took them 15 min before they were notice, then it took them a hour to get their lunch but by that time they had to eave. They inquired about how much longer do they have to wait the waiter just said its coming mine you that they were the only two people in the restaurant. around lunch time.. They had to leave and then all of a sudden the lunch comes out. They were leaving and the owner told them if they didn't pay for the food he was going to call the cops. This is not a restaurant if you are BLACK. I would not recommend this restaurant to NO ONE. read more

My cousin and I went to Lex on Sunday for a 2pm brunch reservation. We were promptly seated by the maitre d and then left to our own devises. After 15 minutes I had to flag down the maitre d to request for the menu. Another 20 minutes went by before I had to flag for someone to come take our order. Another 10 min later one of the waiter came and when we tried to order we were told that our 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices were sold out. As we are trying to decide what to order the waiter then made an impatient grump and walked away to take orders from other diners never returning back to take ours. We had to flag another waiter who took our order. In the meantime we had to flag maitre d to get our drinks order which took another 30 minute to appear. 40 minutes after we put our order our appetizers arrived with no apologies about the delay. When our main came out they had gotten my cousin's order wrong. The main waiter who had snubbed us originally came up looking annoyed and when we explained that the order was wrong he made a grump noise again and left without saying a word. The right order materialize 15 min later. Considering the wait we'd had so far we thought we would put our dessert order in as my cousin is finishing off her main. The waiter very rudely said for us to wait until we finish our mains before ordering our dessert. When I tried to explain we wanted to put it in so we didn't have to wait too long he restated what he said very slowly and said "Do you not understand?". Needless to say the service here was appalling! The food was mediocre definitely not worth the wait or the rude service. Majorly disappointed after I'd read the good reviews from Yelp. read more

I was someone's guest so I feel a little guilty, but....I ordered the spinach salad. It was arugula. Tasty, but not what was offered/what I ordered. I ordered the chicken special. No prosciutto, dry, tasteless chicken, spinach between mozzarella/alleged prosciutto/and dry tasteless chicken added nothing to the dish. The mashed potatoes are great, and the offer of a sambucca on the house very generous. The bread is like "Italian bread" you get at Pioneer. For not a lot more, you can eat at Sfoglia (which is amazing) -- if you can get a reservation. Lex needs to do a better job. It is just above diner quality at well above commensurate prices. I would love to see them do quality to justify the prices they charge. read more

My girlfriend and I drove two hours through stop and go traffic, tolls, and high gas prices from Bridgeport CT all the way down to this s # ! t hole, the place is like 10 foot wide ( i am absolutely not kidding ) it was like walking into the back of a tractor trailer just not as tall.. My mother in law had bought us a gift card from travel zoo of about 50 dollars for the place, the fine print read it was for Saturdays only; of course we failed to read it and made the trip on a Friday. The manager walked over to our table grabbed the piece of paper, where the gift card was printed, very abruptly and without asking for our permission to touch our personal belongings read it off and dismissively stated "this is for Saturday brunch only not for today", then walked away like the complete ASS#013 that he apparently is. He walked up and down his little micro-machine hot-wheels toy-box of restaurant that is Lex restaurant a few times ignoring me as I attempted to get his attention. I finally get up, approach him in an attempt to get him to honor the gift card explaining to him that we just spent TWO HOURS driving from Bridgeport CT through traffic, tolls, and to factor in the high cost of gas. He showed absolutely no desire in speaking to me, walked away and a waiter that was walking by continued to explain to me that they "had to follow a chain of command", as if their micro-machine hot-wheels toy-box restaurant was some kind of paramilitary institution, give me a break? When the ASS#013 manager walks by again i ask if the owner was available he stated "He'll be here tomorrow if you want to stop by and talk to him", as if my previous explanation describing and emphasizing how much of a burden it was to drive to his microscopic facility was just a me telling him how much i loved the drive in. The magical manager sat us down on a table without menus, i supposed he was going to guess what we wanted. The menu was ONE page of something that looked like it had been put together by a junior high school class as a creative writing project. The waiter offered us something to drink without a menu to select anything to drink from. Then brings us water without us asking for water which is standard but still no menu's yet. The place is so small we were literally were sitting elbow to elbow with the couple sitting next to us. We just picked up our jackets without ordering anything and left. Horrible experience that makes me NEVER WANT TO GO TO NYC. My mother in law gave us two of these gift cards the other one was for ' Vito's By The Park ' in Hartford CT, the waiter told us oh we ignore the fine print and just deduct the amount from your total bill no problem at all. That place was a Ferrari of a restaurant, where Lex Restaurant by comparison is a 1989 Toyota Tercel. p.s.- We spent $200.00+ at Vito's By The Park, this manager basically pushed away well over $150.00 worth of business on this day. My family and I were visiting New York and after arguing about a place to eat for like 30 minutes I closed my eyes and chose a restaurant randomly. I landed on this one and let me tell you it was like God himself led me to this place. The service was awesome like I never ran out of water, but the waiter wasn't all up in my business like "hey woah back up sir why you always in my business, ya know?" Also the ice to water ratio in the glass was phenomenal. But nothing compares to the chicken scarpariello I ordered. My taste buds were singing I literally shed a tear and I was so sad when I finished the meal. If I was on my death bed and someone asked what my last meal would be I would ask them to hit me up with that chicken from the Lex Restaurant because the sauce they put on it is not comparable to anything I've ever experienced. If you served this meal to everyone in the world I really think war would end and we would all be happy individuals living in a Utopian society of BOMB chicken and quality sauce. Bought the travelzoo deal. First, the food was okay. Not spectacular. I would never pay $50 for what we got. Major problem is with the owner. He's bizarre and snotty. There were maybe 5 times occupied when we went. Apparently the owner has his own section of tables to wait on. The first time he spoke to us, I thought he was just socially awkward but I realize in hindsight, he's rude and condescending. The deal was the prix fix (again, normally $25 - not worth it!) one drink, an app, an entree from a special list, and a dessert. We ordered the crab cake and the calamari. They were both really good. I had salmon benedict and my husband had regular benedict. Again, both fine, not something I'll have a craving for in the future. The problem arose in trying to decide if we wanted dessert. It was 2pm on a Saturday. We asked the waiter (aka the owner as I come to find out) to give us a min. He then left for about 15 min. He took drink orders from the table beside us, behind us, but would not stop back at our table to see what we decided. I thought at the time that he was incapable of mult tasking. Get drink order, walk to the bar, wait for drink order, bring it back, turn to next table, get drink order, etc. I said excuse me a few times but he didn't seem to hear. We decided against dessert and wanted to leave. I then got up and walked towards the hostess desk and said that we had decided against dessert and was there a bill? (some of these deals have tax, some don't. ) The owner then said in his stick up his ass voice, there's tax, I can show you the voucher? and then the tip. Um..I left a tip at the table and a simple, let me get your check for the tax would have sufficed. He was talking to me like I was an idiot and it caused the conversation to turn south pretty quickly. He actually tried to tell me what proper etiquette in a restaurant was. Mmm.. How about proper service and a friendly attitude towards your customers? or learning to multi task if you're going to stand in for a waiter in your restaurant. I went on a Sunday around 12:30 with my wife and kids before going to The Met . The service was amazing and the people were friendly. Me and my wife both had the egg benedicts and my kids had the Egg Park Avenue. The eggs were perfectly poached and the hollandaise sauce was perfectly seasoned. After The Met and a walk around Central Park my wife wanted to go back to the restaurant for dinner after the nanny picked up the kids. While there we meet one of the owners called Linda. She was such a sweetheart and a wonder to be around. For appetizer we both at French Soup. Which had the perfect amount of onion and broth. For dinner I had the Branzino and my wife had the Chicken Peperonata. Both of our meals were perfectly matched with Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay California wine. For dinner we shared a Brownie which was a perfect way to end the night for us at the restaurant. We both loved the warm vibe going throughout the restaurant. I am definitely recommending this restaurant to my friends and family in town. read more

My wife and I ate here last night with some friends. Our last experience eating here was fantastic but unfortunately last nights experience was mediocre at best. We made a reservation 2 weeks in advance and unfortunately we're seated at the last table by the kitchen and the bathrooms. We started out with a cocktail and my wife and I got a gin and tonic. My wife and I both felt that the Gin and Tonic was very weak. We then ordered an appetizer of fried calamari for the table and our salads. We then ordered our dinners entrees. Instead of the calamari coming out for everyone to enjoy the calamari came out at the same time that the salads came out and they gave the calamari to my wife and never gave her the salad that she ordered. We all received our entrees and honestly the food was all good. The other part was that we had 3 different waiters that served us and it seemed very chaotic and rushed. The only saving grace was the server Joe who went out of his way to accommodate us. We have had the pleasure of having him as our server in the past and the guy is fantastic. If I go back I would definitely ask to be seated in his area. He is great! All in all not completely terrible but not great either and we were disappointed that we brought our good friends there. Went there on a date night. The place is dimly lit, quiet, and cozy. The appetizers are good, we had the spinach salad with bacon and the kale salad with goat cheese. The portion is generous almost enough to be an entrée. The wait staff is very attentive and discreet. We never felt rushed to finish our meal. The food came out hot and quick. We had the angel hair pasta and the veal chop special. The angel hair pasta had a generous amount of shrimp and the dish was delicious. The pasta had a nice al dente texture. The veal chop was well done and surprisingly tender. The chop had mozzarella (?) cheese stuffed into the chop. It was a pleasant surprise to find gooey cheese oozing out after cutting into the meat. The vegetable (kale) was good and the roasted potato was crispy yet tender. The only complaint was the chop was a little too salty near the bone. This over seasoning prevented this review from getting five stars. The tartufo desert was delicious , except it was missing a surprise inside (a maraschino cherry). The homemade tiramisu really tasted homemade, with a lot of espresso flavor and it melted in your mouth. Would definitely go back there again. read more
