After reading at nearby Canalside a couple Saturdays ago, my brother was going to meet me for lunch at Clinton's Dish when I remembered the Liberty Hound was close by as well! To Liberty Hound we went. We were seated right away out on the patio, right near the huge navy boats. Although I wish more of the seating was in the sun, it was cool to be so close to the ships. Our waiter was actually pretty rude but it seemed to work for him. For example, "here are some specials, check 'em out." Um... okay, don't explain them to me, I can read. When asking him about the difference between the specialty Bloody Mary and the plain Bloody Mary, he didn't have much to offer because "he hadn't tried them both." Okay sir, I'll have the specialty Bloody Mary. Turns out, I didn't really care for it. Oh well. My brother had the Liberty Burger while I ordered the Coronado Burger, medium rare. I don't know what the mix up was but it was more well done than any medium rare I ever had. Without me mentioning anything, our slightly-rude waiter noticed the well done burger and went into the kitchen. I was planning to eat the burger regardless, it wasn't burnt or anything. My bonus bell went off though when the check came, my burger wasn't on there, yahoo! Brother bear was jealous :) Despite the service and overdone burger not quite to my liking, I think the Liberty Hound definitely has potential, particularly with such a great location. Only a 10 min wait for indoor seating at noon on a beautiful sunny afternoon at Canalside, with a boat & car show going on (30 min if you wanted outdoor seating). My first impression was "ew" as we waited near the elevators and dirty baby seats. The floor was sticky, flies were buzzing around the unclean baby seats (visible crumbs and smudges), and there was a rag left in one of the seats. Looking beyond that area into the restaurant, people were eating, talking, food wizzed by...looked ok! Our server Anna greeted us promptly and with water that she kept filled (thank you!). Great list of beers and cocktails but we stuck with water this time. We ordered the lobster roll and a Caesar salad with chicken. All of the food we watched go by looked very good! We liked that malt vinegar was brought to the table as well as ketchup & hot sauce! Will keep that in mind next time we want a fish fry. We weren't sure what to expect since this little place is always so busy and in the heart of the CanalWalk. Instead of waiting an hour, we went to the bar and were served right away. Drinks were good; the Liberty Lady cocktail a favorite. The muscles were fantastic. A generous serving in rich broth with onions, bacon and blue cheese. Really a reason to go just for those. I spent the day exploring the surrounding naval museum then walked over to Libery Hound for a bite to eat. I was able to sit outside in the shade to enjoy a nice breeze. I was in desperate need of a good salad after a few crazy days of tasty but calorie filled meals. I ordered the Greek salad without olives. I did not add any protein. The salad came out with great, hearty, very green romaine. The pita was a great carb addition to the plate. The dressing was good but in a few bites maybe a bit too much. The veggies on the salad were good and nicely cut. I ate EVERY bite of that salad. I'm happy I did not get meat on it because at that time I just needed some greens! After a very long day of driving we checked into our hotel and walked a short distance to this restaurant on the water. No room outside so we sat inside where it was almost empty. We ordered a wedge salad to share and each got the fish fry. The waitress was lovely and said the food would be out right away. We waited a long time. They brought out the salad that was all chopped up--not a wedge salad but delicious anyway and plenty for two or one hungry diner. The fish came out on top of the salad so we sent it back. When it finally came it was delicious. The one piece of fish was cooked perfectly and moist and crunchy on the outside. But the fries and coleslaw were so salty that we couldn't eat them at all. The conch fritters were disappointing. I grew up on these and had a chance to introduce some friends to them. The batch that we got barely had any conch in them. We also tried the calamari which turned out really well. For our mains we had various dishes and everyone seemed to enjoy. I had the Cioppini which was very good. I consider this place to be one of the Best Dining Areas around Canalside, an Upscale Eatery that people can partake on exquisite Seafood & Drinks and get a Great view of the Water. Nate got a Moscow Mule (he loves his Vodka) and I got the Homeward Bound (Freshly squeezed Lemonade, Muddled Blueberries and Sailor Jerry Rum). We both split a Plate of the Ahi Tuna Nachos (with Seaweed Salad and a Sriracha Aioli), (it was ok). While it was seasoned nicely I thought the cuts on the Fish were a bit off, the Aioli was light on Heat (I wanted some more Punch) and the Seaweed Salad was Slimy (Texturally Offputting in my Mouth). First time was good, plus it was a tad bit on the Windy Side. Our Next visit was Bright and Sunny, after a failed attempt at trying to go Kayaking we stopped here for a Late Lunch. We make to a decision not to get any Drinks this time, so I got Seared Scallops over Roasted Brussel Sprouts with Pancetta, Shallots & Lemon (Scallops were seared nicely, perfectly cooked, same with the Brussel Sprouts but I thought the Ratio was a bit off, 4 Scallops atop a Mound of Flavorful Brussel Sprouts (It didn't feel like an appetizer, it was more like Family Style Entrée). Nathan got the Red Snapper Tacos with Pico de Gallo, we also decided to split a Salad (gotta have my Greens). So we split a Caesar Salad topped with Grilled Chicken (good amount of Dressing added to give it some Saltiness, the Chicken was so Moist and Tender and the Gill marks gave it a Crispy outer Surface, the Lemon gave it some Acidity). My date and I went to the liberty Hound on a sunny summer Saturday. The canal side area was abuzz with life and excitement. The inside of the restaurant was also buzzing with people, so we sat outside. My date thought there should be separation between the patio seating and the people walking about on the boardwalk. They should add a waste high fence or hedge. It was a hot and sunny day for sure. Liberty Hound has many different selections for beverages. You won't be disappointed with the beer or cocktail options. I had a blackberry ale that was pretty good. They also have a good selection of food. We got the calamari and the scallops. Both were fair. The calamari had banana peppers in it. They were fried and I didn't expect this. Maybe they should have been a side. Was here for dinner and it turned out to be solid. The service was attentive, the ambience was great, and the other diners seemed happy and well fed. The fish tacos were fresh and delicious, with house made salsa and a small salad option in lieu of French fries. The only downside to Liberty Hound is that it's LOUD. The acoustics there are awful, which wasn't helped by two things: It was raining out and all the doors were closed. There was also a loud vocal a capella event going on upstairs. Had such a terrible experience here and will not be returning. My two friends and I came here 2.5 hours before a show we were seeing at key bank center. We waited about 10 minutes for a table and once we were seated we waited 20 minutes for the server to arrive. When our server Annie finally got to us, we ordered our drinks, a pepper dip and our meals since we had waited for so long and knew what we wanted. It was another 20 minutes before we got our drinks and the pepper dip came shortly after the drinks. The drinks were disgustingly strong, not mixed and had way more ice than I've ever seen before. The dip was very good. We proceeded to wait an hour before seeing our server again. She finally came back and filled our water and asked us if we wanted more bread for the rest of the pepper dip. We said yes and it was 15 more minutes until we received the bread. It was now getting close to the time we had to leave for the concert and we were getting nervous that our food had not been brought out yet. 2 hours into our visit, the server comes up to us and tells us that she only has one burger left (two of us had ordered burgers). She did not apologize, she did not bring us menus to look over so we could chose another entree, and we were annoyed that we had ordered 2 hours prior and were just now being told that there were not enough burgers. My friend asked for an impossible burger instead. The food came out shortly after that and was cold. The fries tasted like they had been sitting out. I asked for no onion and no tomato on my burger and it had both of those on them. She did not comp anything off the bill regardless of our wait time and the inconvenience of being out if something 2 hours after we ordered it. AND she charged us $1 for the extra bread that not only was offered to us, but took 15 minutes to get to us. Never have I ever had such a bad experience before. My sister and I stopped in on Thursday before the Tea Party Canalside concert. First off, the service was wonderful. The reclaimed barnwood is excellent for taking artsy pictures of your fancy cocktails. ;-) There were several girls who seemed to be SCREAMING and laughing at the bar, and then a group of men talking loudly over them. Thankfully they left soon after we arrived. (Yelling back at them over the wall may have facilitated this.) The food this time was not great. We ordered the calamari, and it was a little soggy, so the breading was all falling off. I think it may have been slightly undercooked? We ordered the Burrata burger and the chicken and brie sandwich as mains. They came with very nicely cooked fries and we had malt vinegar, so we were happy. The actual sandwiches were just...meh... Beef was cooked perfectly (I ordered it almost rare) and was seasoned well, but the rest of the setup really had little flavor. Chicken and brie was bland; the chicken was overcooked and not trimmed well beforehand. I feel like I paid $100 with tip for some good fries and fancy cocktails. We split an entree and appetizer. We couldn't even finish everything! huge portion for the fish. I see the major appeal of this place being the patio which not only looks over the marina but also the lit up silos. Hands down would go here during the summer around sunset and dusk to relax on the patio. I was told to make a reservation far in advance though for that. While I do not own a boat in that marina -someday though- I feel like this place brings you into that by the lake feel. You will certainly catch me over the summer stuffing my face with that fish fry on the patio during a few Friday's. However, not sitting on one of the plain metal chairs for an extra 15 minutes is probably a good idea. Not only are the chairs just plain, cold metal, they actually seem slippery. The chairs at some of the other tables were wooden. The prices were a buck or two higher for traditional foods like burgers. There are some different foods on the menu, like a lobster roll, and the special yesterday was a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of soup for only $10.00. I had a very good vodka martini and draft IPA at the bar, then joined my family when I was done for a little food at a table outside. The truffle parmesan fries were ok, but not enough truffle flavor to bother adding it to the name or fish. The muscles appetizer could be great if all you want is the flavor of blue cheese. And to charge extra for more bread...a tiny tiny loaf, was an insult. I don't know about others, but I like the flavor of the mussels, so make it simple. Well, we started the evening disappointed and anxious... But then the food ended up being quite good. We hadn't been to Liberty Hound before and had looked online and found that there four Gluten Free options listed for me - two starters and two entrees (including a jambalaya!) So, we made a reservation. We got there and the only GF option on the menu was shrimp cocktail (not exactly enough to get full on). In talking with the waiter he indicated that the jambalaya was definitely not GF and that the menu online has been incorrect for a while (!!!). I asked what I could have and he said "wings, most of the sandwiches with a GF roll and so on..." I was quite surprised re: the wings because the restaurant is pretty small so I asked if they had a dedicated fryer and he said no and gave me the pat line about "well, it depends on how severe your allergy is." Gently, in the ongoing interest of education, I pointed out that anyone with an allergy or celiac's could get very sick from eating food promoted as GF and then fried in a shared fryer and that such items would only be appropriate for those with an intolerance and/or lifestyle choice. Ultimately, and with some anxiety, I got a beef on weck sandwich with GF roll. (I love it when I get a roll instead of a giant lettuce leaf!) It was delicious - the beef was tender and flavorful and the chef even dusted the top of the roll with salt and seeds. My husband had the shrimp po boy and fries and indicated that the fries were crisp and tasty and the sandwich was amazing. Came here with a large group on a Monday night. Estimated wait was 45 minutes for a table. Who knows how long it would take to request an outside table. This place doesn't offer reservations, even for a large party... pretty archaic. I had a Elliott blueberry beer which was very good. Ordered the jerk chicken as an entree and it was an abomination, I would drop that from the menu. Had the truffle fries (actually not bad) and the ahi tuna nachos (also not bad)... I would stick to the apps, I could only imagine the other entrees were just as bad. read more
