This a five star pizza establishment. The fresh ingredients and freshly baked pies on floury thin crust pizza, is a pizza conassuiers dream come true. I always try a different flavor combination as far as topping go and then I have them turn it into a salad pizza with fresh avocado and viola master pizza artisans. A few weeks ago, I had one doozy of a Monday. Thankfully enough, the cosmos was aligned just right that the compounded ugliness of the day left me with a life-affirming conversation as I played chauffeur to a sassy gay lighting designer from Brooklyn who has a hankering for Starbucks and good pizza. That latter attribute led me to Abbot-Kinney and to the great pizza of Abbot's Pizza Co. This place is famous for its bagel crust - basically, they have a few of their pizza crust adorned with bagel accoutrements; poppy seeds, dried onions, etc., but less gimicky is their great selection of pizza selections and toppings that pleased the discerning pizza palette of my New York companion. After opening the tree screen door, we went into a small dining space with a large chalkboard to the left devoted to a neighborhood posting board, and ahead were racks with pre-made pizzas to grab by the slice or whole. Like a wise episode of Garfield and Friends once told me, no one can ever fully agree on pizza toppings. This trip proved that point. We were buying for some vegetarians and one who didn't want cheese, but it was apparent that he who was buying the pizza was thinking otherwise. We got an extra large (there's small, medium, and extra large...go fig) that had half their Cheeseless Veggie that features "A medley of fresh and tasty 'In Season' vegetables" with choice of sauce, and the other half was the Athens Pie, which sported spinach, sun-dried tomato w/feta and mozzarella on tomato sauce. Although the woman who took our order didn't understand the kind request to "throw in" a few pieces of meat on part of the pizza, I later convinced my company that they could still probably put some on, and so pepperonis were thrown all over the top of the already built pizza, and they didn't charge us extra (and it was assumed the veggies could just pick off the meat discs and throw in to the omnivores' mouths). After some chatting outside on the cute, funky tables, we got our pizza and we were loaded up with parmesan cheese, chili flakes, some orange sauce that I had no idea was, and LOADS of freshly chopped garlic. Being one who eats meat and dairy to some degree, I was able to sample both sides of the pie, and they were divine. I wasn't planning on kissing anyone that day (though I did wind up kissing the lad who led me to this place), I loaded up the garlic on my slices and I was in business. The entire pie itself was large and in charge, with a decent crust, and the sauce was zesty enough without overpowering the toppings. The veggie slice was pretty good, loaded with yummy greens, but I have to say the pepperonis were just as tasty and won me over in flavor. I think the Athens side would have been close to godly, but again, I think the pepperonis were just attention-grabbing enough for me to not notice the spinach and feta goodness. I'm not in the 'Kinney that often, but if I'm not going to La Cabana for giant burritos and good Mexican hot chocolate, I'll be back here for some good pizza. read more

These guys could probably live without another review, but damn, that is one fine slice of pie. I roll by Abbot's all the time, but it's not often that I feel compelled to have pizza when I'm not busy becoming one with my sofa. Today, after passing by Abbots at least half a dozen times in the span of 24 hours, and having had a little nibble of someone's the night prior on Main, I was in the mood and couldn't resist. As much as I wanted to try everything I saw on the menu I went with a mixed salad, a slice of the mushroom and a few bites of my concussed companion's spicy chicken. (Knowing I'd easily inhale more than a slice in one seating, the salad just seemed like good insurance.) The spicy chicken with cilantro, jalapenos, lime and a tomato based sauce was pretty fantastic and had the best tasting crust I have EVER had on a pizza. Ever. I think others have referred to it as a bagel crust, but it was dotted with sesame and poppy seeds and crispy and flavorful and generally fantastic. As good as it was, I liked the mushroom better. Who knows how many different types of mushroom they had on there but instead of tomato sauce it was made with an olive pesto and it was perfect. This one had a plain crust but it was still thin and crispy and delicious. I had to dab a little of the oil off the top since I can't stand it oily or greasy but even that didn't detract from the yummy factor. Some have mentioned spacey service and though I thought they were sweet, I'm gonna have to second that since it seemed like they'd all just had their lunch break at the Farmacy next door. Why, yes, I will require a fork to eat that salad. Did you think I was going to eat it with my hands? Yeah, no. Evidently, prices just went up to 4 bucks a sizable slice, (there was even a Dear John letter posted to the customers to that effect), but once I was chewing away, that was the last thing on my mind. I never seen anything like this place. We arrived to the place at 10:45 pm 7 people and ask for 2 large pizza. The girl said it's too late and we can have only single slice ( on yelp the closing time is 11:00pm) after few min we got the pizza but the said we can't eat inside the place because they are closing at 11:00pm. I was searching the good old yelp app the other day while in Venice and this place turned up. Once again SoCal Pizza has let me down. This small grab a slice to go place is very popular for sure and has pretty much outgrown it's little tiny hole in the wall. Not that they don't try, there's about 5 or 6 bar stools with a counter on each side, and a ledge for you to lean up against outside. We ate standing as the few seats didn't open up in time. So they are making bagel dough crusts....Interesting in concept, but not in reality. While still a thin slice, it makes for a very heavy crust. Kind of like biting into a piece of cardboard. While I enjoy that chew on a bagel, I'm not sure it works well for pizza. I think pizza should have a little sag to it, otherwise it has a stale like quality to it. By the way, you know why there is a special dipping sauce for the crust? Because it has no flavor on it's own. It's surprising because they do take the time to add traditional bagel toppings of poppy seeds, sesame seeds, etc.. to the crust. To me a slice place is all about going up to the counter and seeing what looks good without too many preconceptions about what you are going to order. But here you can't see the pre made pizzas, which is a bad idea. They are stacked on top of the counter with only a few inches between them. So you look at a menu on the wall with a whole bunch of pies listed. How are you supposed to know if they have the pizza you want or not? They for sure didn't have all of them, as there were about 10 pre made pies, and from what I could see, several were repeats of the same pie. When I asked what they had, I was told this stack are all meat pies, and this side are all vegetarian. Seems to me that they throw on toppings as needed on your basic pies. My buddy wanted a veggie pie with pepperoni and sausage. They just gave him one of their tomato basil with pepperoni and sausage added to it as it was being reheated. Adding toppings after the pizza is cooked is a big no no for me. The flavors don't mesh very well, especially meats, where you want some of the flavor to mix with the cheese and sauce. I wanted a pepperoni and mushroom slice, but for sure wasn't going to have them put some mushrooms on top of a slice of pepperoni. They just get dried up and charred that way. Note to owner of abbots pizza .... We live 2 blocks from you and have also ordered pizza from you over a dozen times. Delivery - quite good pizza and also great quality. Tonight we walked into your "establishment". After my boyfriend ordered a cheese pizza (as simple as an order could possibly be) your staff spent 30 minutes acting like we didn't exist and handing pizza to everyone else in the store including those who'd ordered long after us. I don't usually complain - but this is just unacceptable - and when we asked about our pizza the girl behind the counter basically dismissed us and said they were backed up when we were the only customers left in the store not admitting they didn't remember our order. They even asked us to show our receipt and when confronted with the receipt showing our purchase they realized their mistake but laughed like paid business did not matter. We asked for a refund before leaving and they just gave it to us immediately which makes me think the pizza still wasn't being prepared. Staff was unfriendly and unapologetic for their mistake. We won't order even one slice of pizza from here again based on this experience, and will not be recommending this to our friends and tourists as we did in the past. The cashier lied about her name when I asked. I just found the receipt with her real name on it. Her name is Erika. Erika should not be working in the restaurant industry. For that matter I can't think of any business that would want to have her as an employee, her people skills and lack of problem solving skills are embarrassing. I get people make mistakes, my issue was she could care less about fixing the situation. *Drool* My office just ordered 3 pizzas; BBQ Chicken Pizza, Salad Pizza, Popeye's Chicken Pizza. When the delivery guy showed up, I swear I heard angels singing. Thank you Abbott's Pizza Company...me no hungry no mo'! The BBQ Chicken pizza is amazing. Poopyseed/Sesame seed crust, shredded chicken, cilantro, and BBQ sauce.... Popeye Chicken Pizza is very garlic-y but ohhhhh soooooo good. Spinach, mushroom, onion tequila lime marinated chicken w/ mozzarella cheese and garlic pesto sauce. WOW! Don't let the giant neon "Gluten Free Pizza" sign in the front window trick you. Yes, there's gluten free pizza, but it's almost inedible. Somehow, I'd had a good streak going with finding new gluten free pizzas lately. So when I parked on Abbot Kinney and looked up to see that bright sign in the window, I felt like I needed to check it out. I wasn't even hungry, but how could I pass up a chance at discovering a new gluten free pizza joint? Honestly, stepping in, I should have been concerned. It's a really small pizza shop. After I ordered, I noticed a heaping pile of flour just sitting on a counter. And then I started to get concerned. I know gluten free is trendy these days, but if you're gluten free because of celiac or some other sensitivity, AVOID THIS PLACE. After waiting 15 minutes for my pizza, I not only got a burnt, cracker-thin pizza in a soggy, falling-apart box, but I had a reaction. Granted, it looked like a totally different experience if you can eat regular pizza. There were about 20 trays of by-the-slice pizzas ready to go, and the prices for those seemed like a steal too. It had the vibe of every good hole-in-the-wall find. But if you're truly gluten free, this is not your place to eat. I don't know if yelp will delete this review because I was never actually served food at this "establishment". I drove by there at night for a quick slice and was never able to even place an order! I tried to ask for help for 5 or so minutes, but everyone behind the counter ignored me. They even looked at me a few times, too and then looked away. Finally, an older couple walked in and they took their order like I was invisible. I was actually a little insulted (maybe I have a lawsuit on my hands). So yeah, I disagree with previous reviews that their service sucks....because it is non-existent! Doesn't matter if their pizza was amazing or if it raised my IQ by 10 points or even transformed me into a world famous actor, it still isn't worth dealing with their service. Note: I have never walked out of a restaurant before, I have never returned food that was served by mistake or was bad/cold, I never complain about bad service (maybe the waiter had a personal issue that day). Please don't skewer me for this but I'm not crazy about this pizza. To be fair I did not get a fresh slice but rather a reheated one and I feel that may have created a bit of a discrepancy. However, the staff was amazing so I've bumped them up to 3 stars for that. They were ebullient and enthusiastic plus full of smiles. And they keep promising that if we couldn't find anything we liked they would make something for us. I appreciated their dedication. I settled on two pieces. One Gypsy pie and one five mushroom pie. The mushroom was decent. Lots of different mushroom flavors. and the slices were HUGE. One slice was enough actually. I only managed a few bites of the gypsy pie but I strongly preferred the mushroom. Gypsy had a lot of greens on it (spinach I think) but I didn't particularly care for the way it was prepared. Plus, I think I'm strongly in favor of thick crust. This crust was thinner than I prefer. All in all, my neutrality towards this restaurant seems to be purely of my own preferences. Really disappointed in this place. The pizza, no matter how wonderful the toppings look, is really average tasting. It's not bad, but it didn't taste as good as it looked. The customers service was REALLY awful. My girlfriend and I came in and it was busy, which was fine, we have no problem waiting in line, but the guy who served us our pizza was really rude and yelled the whole time. The other guy, the manager or whatever, was even ruder. He was directing people into a line for pizza and then the other side of the counter to pay. For some reason we got directed to the other side of the counter to pay, but they switched and started having everybody pay at the same side where you order... And completely forgot about us for five minutes. That was okay with me too, because it was busy. When we finally got the managers attention, he became really annoyed at us, as if it were our fault they couldn't figure out how to run the joint, and proceeded to give us attitude even though we were waiting patiently. To top it off, some guy behind us, who'd ordered his pizza after us, told the manager that he hadn't paid either. The manager then ignored us and asked the guy if he wanted to pay right away! We eventually got to pay for our mediocre food, but I'm kind of sad we wasted our time and money. I won't be back, to say the least. Don't expect the wow factor to hit you when you walk in . But take one whiff and boom. It's not for dining in, unless grabbing a quick slice. It's warm in there and it's pretty much a takeout joint but my God the pizza is unreal. The thing that hits you the most of the crust, its crisp, thin and the edges ate that perfect thickness, crispy, not chewy, not too thick, the perfect finish to thr perfect slice. The cheese is just right, abd the salad pizza.. Omg. The only thing disappointing is that they didn't have any gluten-free Pieces by the slice and I didn't have time to order a whole pie or want that much but that's not their fault and I would never mark them down for that in a rating here. I was sooooooo hungry and needed food. I had to run down to Venice to drop something off to a friend after work and found myself on Abbott Kinney at 6pm. What the f*ck am I going to eat? I really don't want to eat any meat or seafood or cheese. I really wanted to kick it as vegan as possible. Hmm... I walked up and down the boulevard trying to figure out what to get. Damn I HATE when this happens. I mean I HATE when there is nowhere for me to eat. Okay think. Maybe I can get some pizza without cheese. Will they think I'm crazy?? Turns out the Abbott's Pizza has a cheeseless pizza on their menu. There weren't any slices already made so they kindly offered to make a fresh pizza just for little old me. So sweet. They're a bunch of hippies and I love it! Their cheeseless pizza is a good effort, but there is definitely something missing (even with the fresh veggies they include). Doesn't come close to the tomato (cheeseless) pizza at Pizzeria Mozza. At Mozza you don't miss the cheese at all, but at Abbott it just doesn't really taste like pizza. I think it must be that the quality of the crust and tomato sauce at Mozza is so much higher. Oh well. They tried and I am VERY grateful. read more

Salad on a pizza??? HELL YES! Yes, if you haven't read the other reviews for this place yet, the salad pizza is the one reason to go here by far!!! You would think a salad on a pizza seems like a waste of pizza, but it is far from being a waste! Dave C and I went here after hearing about all of the hype and almost didn't get the salad pizza, but while we were waiting for our order we succumbed to the pressure of seeing the huge slices sitting there waiting to be bought like a little puppy in the store, so we gave in and bought a slice to split as an appetizer, and soon after our first bites we had wished we had gotten more salad pizza and less of the normal pizza. The salad is so fresh and light and it is even served on a sesame dough crust--IT IS TO DIE FOR!!! If I got back here this is hands down the one thing I would order!!! We also tried the regular pizzas as well--we got one of the new york style pizzas (a small) half with shitake mushrooms, and half with the tequila lime chicken and Dave liked his mushrooms (I stay away from those gross things ha) and my tequila lime chicken was actually very tasty. Not quite enough cheese on this pizza for my test, but I am also cheese obsessed heh Being the heifers that we are we also ordered a large five onion pizza!! We thought we would be able to take on this eating challenge but no....even with Dave eating more than his half we couldn't do it and had LOTS leftover. Overall this five onion pizza basically tasted like a bunch of onions and we couldn't even taste the pesto sauce that was supposed to be on it...and not tasting the glorious taste that is pesto is always a shame to me....Oh ya, and there are only 2 or 3 tables outside, so take it to go. Next time, I will try and sample the different pizzas by ordering slices instead, and I cannot wait for my reunion with that fantastic salad pizza!!! I'm surprised that I haven't reviewed Abbot's Pizza before. There are two things that you should know about me for purposes of this review: 1. I love pizza. Love it. LOVE it. Would eat it every day of the week if I could do so without gaining 20 pounds. 2. I live less than a quarter of a mile from Abbot's Pizza. It is right in the 'hood that I walk through every day. Despite my love (LOVE) of pizza and the extreme proximity of Abbot's Pizza, I only eat there at most once a month (on average, once every couple of months). Why don't I eat there more? Well, because it's just not that good. Sadly. In fact I think it's been getting worse over the last couple of years. What makes Abbot's Pizza unique is it's bagel crust. I think the crust is pretty good. Not as good (IMO) as a standard NYC-style thin crust, but I do like the chew. So far, we're doing well... Moving on to the sauce, I think the sauce itself is okay. Definitely not the best sauce I've had, but alright. I give it a Meh in a Wow-to-Ugh rating system. The amount of sauce on the pies is pretty inconsistent and it is often on the too skimpy side of the perfect pizza equation. Cheese. It's good. Greasy, but good. No real complaints about the cheese. Toppings are also generally fine. I typically stick to either the greek style or a plain slice of cheese (the true measure of a good pizza place to me is how they do on a good old plain slice of cheese pizza). The exception to the rule with the toppings are the herbs that they sometimes slather all over the pizza. I'm not sure why they are so heavy-handed with dried herbs on a plain slice of cheese pizza, but they basically ruin the slice for me when they are overdone. Someone in that kitchen has a herb shaking fetish or something. It is just wrong. Also often we end up with slices that are, shall we say, not so fresh. They've got that not-so-fresh feeling. Probably the staff should do a better job of weeding out the old slices. It just feel like quality control has been slipping. I will say the salad pizza is a nice option and always seems fresh and light. If my pizza love were directed towards salad pizzas, this would be the place to go! But for a good slice of cheese pizza, Abbot's misses my mark. Which I guess is a good thing since I really don't want those 20 extra pounds! read more

Bf and I have been big fans of Abbot's on Pico for years now, we always go there and get slices when we get the pizza itch. The bagel crust is chewy and the slice flavors are really smart. But this time it was Jan 1st, and it was 10:15pm-ish, and when we tried the Pico location they were closed (boo!). We remembered that there was another location, so we thought, what the hell! I gotta tell you, I think I like THIS location BETTER! Why? Well, for one - they were open til midnight! I know it's new year's day and all, but come on - it's also a Friday night! For two - their slices were FRESHER than the ones that we usually get at the Pico location. Maybe they get more foot traffic here, all I know is that you can taste the difference between slices that haven't seen that heat lamp for long and slices that have been sitting, and sitting..... K, three - the BBQ Chicken pizza here had TWICE the chicken than the Pico location! We always get this one, it's awesome, fresh, not too slathered with the bbq to still be pizza, and with enough cilantro and purple onion to make it fresh tasting. Four - they have slices with pineapple here! I loves me some pineapple on mah pizza, I tell you - and the Pico location doesn't have one single flavor with pineapple (boo!). One more - making it five - they give you this chipotle-y, ranch-y dipping sauce - for *free* - to dip the chewy, crusted with seasonings, bagel crust stumps into. And it's spicy and creamy and goooooood! The only sad point here is the (sniff) *absence* of this AWESOME line of cookies that the Pico location has, that this location does not. Isabella's Cookies are HUGE and SOFT and LOADED with amazing chunks of things - try the Maui Wowie (pineapple, coconut, mac nuts), or the Muffy (blueberries, white chocolate), or really any of the others, and you'll totally agree! (Bay Cities has them too!) We just might have to go a little further out of our way when we get that pizza itch from now on.......and then pick up some Isabella's cookies at the Pico location on the way home : ) read more

Mmm, I love this place. It's a hole in the wall on Abbott-Kinney - walk in, order a slice from the selection (they'll warm it up for you), or commission your own pie. My personal fave is the salad pizza - it's a salad, piled on a pizza! O, yes. The taste of oily dough with the impression that it's all good for you and low-cal! I'm taken in. Oh, and the crust is a beigel. With sesame seeds if you want. Tastes good and the big pizzas are not big, they're huge. Call ahead if you don't want to queue, parking is on the street outside (good luck) or the lots behind the shop on Electric. You can sit inside on stools, or outside on tiny tables. Staff is grumpy and are not very accommodating with their "pizza nazi" ways...did I hear her say "No salad pizza for you, bitch!" because I could have sworn she did... The bbq chicken pizza I had rocked though. Perfect balance of flavors, not too much BBQ sauce, awesome thin crust and the poppy and sesame seeds made it that much better. I wish I'd ordered 2 slices, and I'm not a 2 slice girl! A little pricey at over $5/slice after tax. I am definitely going to return to try their famous salad pizza... next time I won't go late at night though, b/c they only sold slices even though we wanted to order a whole pizza. read more

Stopped in here for a snack as I was window shopping Abboy Kinney. Great menu. Pizzas are available by the slice. I ordered the cheeze bomb which is disappointingly nothing more than a white pizza. Hence the intentional mis-spelling of cheeze, as I don't think it needs more tallies on the Yelp app. That said it was a good slice of white pizza and I ate it cold. read more

4 Bass Ales. 1 Gin & Tonic. 1/4 bottle of cold sake. 1/4 bottle of Dom Perignon. To be fair, this is what I consumed before I "walked" into this pizza dream. Although they were no longer serving whole pies at the time, the slices worked out just fine. My friend asked the girl behind the counter if she wanted to join us after she got off of work, she replied, "Yeah. That's what I want to do. Hang out with the people I serve." Deflated...he ordered 12 slices to go. (there were three of us. helloooo.) Anywho, the friendly doorman at the Brig allowed us to bring our grub in and enjoy yet another cocktail while we woofed down the triangle love. Fresh toppings, right amount of sauce and a crust so tasty you'd punch a kitten for another bite. There were no kittens in the bar at the time. Overall, I now have my Westside 'za joint. You can't go wrong w/the spicy chicken, or the wild mushroom, or the gypsy pie, or the cheese bomb, or the athen's, or any of their other pizzas really. Especially their salad pizza! NOM! This place is AMAZING. I love that you can get gourmet pizza by the slice! They try to do that at Z pizza but come nowhere close. It's crazy busy in here when there's ten people waiting in the "lobby" area, which is just like a 10' x 12' box at the front and the servers running around sweating, yelling back at the cooks shouting orders, while they listen to their radio station of choice on PRETTY high volume. But you gotta love it! I mean, it's not like you're going to eat your pizza there, are you? hmm, probably not my first choice to dine in haha. Tons of really good toppings or you can get a simpler pizza, but i find those to be boring. So during a semi-concussed haze brought on by the kitchen light fixture falling on my head, I realized that I was damn hungry. My short and lovely companion suggested snagging a little something in Venice, we tootled down to Abbot Kinney and set about exploring. My foxy little guide led me to Abbots Pizza and we ventured inside. I ordered a couple of slices of the Spicy Chicken pizza, that has lime, cilantro, jalapenos and indeed chicken all nesting on a sesame / poppy seed crust (the arm-candy had a slice o' the mushroom) So - yes - yum. really yum in fact. Not uber-insane hot, but enough spice to set my tongue twitching and leave enough of a gentle burn for me to realize that I should not perform cunnilingus on anyone for a few hours and after a swill or three of mouthwash. The poppy/sesame seed base... feck me that was good too! So why doesn't this place get a 5 star review? Well the service = not so good. Our counter lady seemed to have less memory that a 16k computer, meaning that when they were out of forks (for the girlie's salad) she went to get them from storage, then neglected to bring them out to us or even restock the fork bucket. Then, the 4 mins she quoted to me for my pizza to get out of the oven turned to 9 or so with no sign of pie heading in my direction, so I had to go in and get it, which irked me. So I ordered again from Abbot's and requested two slices of goat cheese pizza and an extra large cheese bomb pizza, made of parmesan, romano, fontina, gouda and mozzarella topped with a spoonful of ricotta. The goat cheese had mushrooms, and was goat and mozzarella cheese. The thick crust had some poppy seeds, correct me if I'm wrong, and even though I am not a big fan of goat cheese, it tasted good. The cheese bomb was delicious. The crust was thin, but the slice was so big that it filled me up fast. Delivery is fast and cheap, only $3. read more

Stowed away with the rest of the 'Abbot's in town, Abbot's pizza is the next best damn thing to New York pizza. No joke. Salad pizza had a thin, rustic crust; barely sprinkled feta cheese; and delicious greens, avocado, and tomatoes. This pizza is a light pizza. So after you gorge yourself with one of these babies, you don't feel as guilty ;). I saw bagel crust pizzas! Next time I'll be trying their other inventive creations. read more

I'm a fan kind of despite this place. Especially since they've introduced the Salad Pizza, which is truly one of the most amazing pizza experiences you'll have. It looks totally bizarre - like you'll walk by and see people eating that and think to yourself "that freak just ordered a cheese pizza and a salad and just threw the salad on there, and man that looks gross... but he's sure enjoying the hell out of it...maybe i'll try that some time." And then you get it, and it's so messy and bizarre, but it's so delicious that you'll be hooked forever. Anyway, the service here sucks beyond belief, you wait forever, and not because it's always busy, but more because they're all stoned out of their minds and hate people and shouldn't be working in food service. But the pizza is good man, so you go back. And back. I do have to say, until the Salad Pizza, I was looking elsewhere. But they have me back. Get the hot crust if you can handle heat.
