Because we asked for a refund, a man came up with a tone saying, "Do you cook?!", "Have you ever worked in a restaurant?!", "You can't tell me how long it takes!!". The teenager behind the counter acted like I was a burden on him when I stepped up to ask for my order. Worse, none of the staff was wearing state-mandated face masks during the Covid-19 pandemic. SOOOO since I'm from NY & my fave food is, yeah you guessed it PIZZA, I have to give Lilly's 5 s. There's not too many places in the South that can boast about having decent pizza. But Lilly's is one of them even though it's not NY Style. This place is ALWAYS packed, inside & out. The pizza is made to order with the freshest ingredients and unique combinations, with the option to customize your own. The only down side is the wait can be pretty long, due to high demand but is that really a con?! And ladies your hair will smell like you stuck your head in an oven by the time you leave the place! Went here after several suggestions from friends. My friend and I ordered individual slices. Mine was the Cowtipper with tomato sauce, mozzarella, ground beef, olives, parmesan, and feta cheese. Hers was a custom made slice (bonus for not making us order a full pizza!) Both were delicious with a fresh tasting dough and toppings. Her mom ordered the Lilly's House Salad and a meat lasagna. She said she loved the salad and the lasagna was a huge serving that was baked right into the dish. I tried a sample and it was nice and cheesy with a hearty meat tomato sauce. The only snag was that they either forgot the lasagna or it takes an unusually long time to prepare. Either way, a heads-up would have been nice. It was a long enough wait that I got up and walked to the counter to ask about it. There are a lot of different pizza combinations and other stuff on the menu that I would definitely come back to sample more. read more

I've been living a Raleigh for about six weeks and I've already eaten at Lily's twice. I can tell that it's going to be one of my regular places. Both times my boyfriend and I shared "The Gus" with vegan Daiya cheese. This pizza is so good. Several different kinds of mushrooms plus a porcini oil gives you so much delicious umami mushroom flavor. It's seriously delicious. Maybe I'll try something new next time...but maybe not. As others have noted, the service isn't especially friendly and sometimes the wait for your pizza is rather long. But honestly, the food is so good it's worth it. Just go in with realistic expectations about the service and the wait won't bother you so much. read more

Lilly's has been a popular Raleigh joint for as long as I can recall and most anyone that's lived inside the beltline for any appreciable amount of time has probably already firmed up an opinion of the place. For me, it's been a mixed bag, at best. I dined in quite a bit during the early 2000's and found it to be above average. My only complaint being that the outside crust took up too much of the pizza. Like, every pie should come with a side of dipping sauce because you're getting an order of breadsticks by way of the crust. Still, it was quite good on the whole. Then, maybe a little over decade ago, my wife and I started getting a lot of delivery from Lilly's. This coincided with the beginning of our binge watching habits - hence staying in rather than going out. That's when I noticed certain aspects being off. On multiple occasions I received strombolis or calzones that were well undercooked. At first I thought they had put a lot of vegan cheese in the vegan stromboli because the inside was so gummy. Then I realized that it was simply dough that had not been given time to bake. During this era I knew enough people who worked or had worked there to understand that most of those employed were hipsters who spent most of their shift stoned out of their minds so, yeah, stuff is gonna get done wrong. Your business is only as good as the people you hire. Nowadays the staff is totally different. That said... Going back a few years, my wife and I were supposed to bring Lilly's food to her dad's house for a family luncheon. We used their online ordering to place an order the night before so we could run in and pick it up and head over to meet the family. We get there and they say they have no record of the order. They at least gave us a few free beers while we waited and they were nice about everything, but the rest of our family was forced to wait for us to arrive. All of that should have been ample evidence to give business to Capital Creations or DeMo's or Mellow Mushroom, but my wife really likes Lilly's tofu salad and, outside of giving her the wrong dressing once, they've never really screwed it up. So she suggests we get two of those tonight. Ok, fine. I place the order online and under "Special Instructions" I type, "Do not ring the doorbell, please." You see, we have a dog who had surgery on her ACL just two days ago and it is kinda important that she remain calm and sedate. So there stands my wife behind the storm door as the driver walks up. She waves at him. He acknowledges her. He then walks right up on the porch and, for whatever inexplicable reason, he rings the doorbell. Our dog leaps up and races towards the door and now we are just hoping that she didn't aggravate the injury or, worse, undo the surgery. All because either the dispatcher can't deliver instructions or the driver can't follow them. Possibly some bizarre combo of the two. I am done with Lilly's at this point. If you want good pizza done right you have maybe a 50/50 chance with them, but I'm not one to take those odds. read more

They tried to serve me a pizza someone had already taken out and put in their car - they gave them our pizza by mistake- but they still tried to sell it it to me-could have been infected with the corona virus. I had to raise a fuss over it- I shouldn't have had to point out that wasn't safe, given the current covid-19 situation. Also everything was about 40 minutes late- based on time we were told to arrive and pickup. The two evidently untainted pizzas- I threw in the trash. Can't take a chance. We won't be back. I just want to edit my review to address the manager's comments. I comported myself in nothing but a respectful manner - I am absolutely offended at any allegation my behavior was anything other than proper. That is completely false. The fact is your business tried to sell me a pizza someone had been given by your staff, which person had in their car for approximately five minutes - then when your staff realized what had happened, she came out and yelled for the person- who had not driven off yet- took back my pizza, said "whooo! Man, I almost had to buy a pizza!" Then admittedly gave me the same food that person had in their car. That wouldn't be acceptable even if there wasn't an intentional pandemic disease going around. When I objected, your staff member expressed displeasure that I wouldn't accept the tainted pizza, the only redress was to cook me a new one, which would have taken at least 10 more minutes. I was told my order would be ready at 7:15, and it was already 7:43, so that was not a satisfactory resolution. I simply said to please give me the two other pizzas I ordered and to cancel the one you gave to someone else. This is not how you run a business- Coronavirus epidemic time or not. By the way, the managers first comment called his staff "stupid" for doing this and did nothing but apologize- too bad I didn't get a screen shot of that. The picture is of the two pizzas I did pay for- that you comped, even though you say you didn't do anything wrong. They're in the trash where they belong. For what it's worth- I guess you feel like you should be appreciated for having your staff wash their hands. They're supposed to do that anyway. Bad business. read more

The original crust, although tasty, was shaped so large, it covered half the pizza. It was like eating two whole breadsticks after eating a tiny bit of actual pizza. The tomato sauce is nothing special, to me actually tasted canned, so you're better off with pesto or some other base. The prosciutto didn't taste fresh and was bland. The other mistake I made was that I ordered online. They were out of a topping we requested and having Slice as the go-between took extra time. It was a whole hour until I finally got my pizza. It's hard to come by bilinguals at a pizzeria nowadays. My family from Puerto Rico came by and with them not knowing much English and being caught up with my kids they manager who was bilingual made my life and experience waaaayyy easier. Lilly's Pizza has a lot of options so translating and answering questions would've been difficult. I'd say took us less than 3 minutes for a party of 8 and 30 min for our order. Our salads which was very fresh, steaming chicken was flavorful and the pizza was perfect! Can't even go on. Just have to check it out yourself! Came to curbside and waited over 30 minutes. Called twice and not willing to come in due to this pandemic. Other customers waiting as well finally got the pizza had a hole in the bottom and was cold. Never again! let me just tell you that what i saw yesterday has unfortunately changed my opinion of lillys pizza... a place that used to be the awesome, hip neighborhood pizza joint i have loved for years, as a raleigh native. i was waiting in right on glenwood by the wells fargo, and two women got out of a car near me, both wearing lilly's pizza t-shirts (obviously employees). both women were extremely unkept looking, as one had a lip and septum piercing. i did not go into lillys, but are these women SERIOUSLY making my salads and cooking my pizza? i have a husband who is a chef, and he was completely appalled and found it hard to believe that the owner of lillys (whom he knows) would hire such employees. wow. wont be dining at here again until they shape up their employees and sanitation-- repulsive. read more

I went to Lilly's for the first time earlier this week. I moved to Raleigh a week ago and had heard from multiple people that I needed to try it out. Due to COVID19, my only option was take out rather than dine in. I called in two lunch special orders, one with two slices of pizza, and another with a slice of pizza and side salad. Everything was delicious and the lunch specials were a good size. They accidentally forgot to give me my side salad originally, and when I came back by they upgraded it to a larger size. We had to clean off our own table while watching no less than 3 employees standing behind the counter or running one pizza at a time. Which would be fine man if you're busy and doing all you can, but that was not the case here and at least take a plate back on your way. The customer service at the drop off area was slow and the workers all seemed very confused which was a little annoying but not too much of a hassle. The real issue was that there were huge vegetable peels from onions in the sauce on each pizza which was disgusting and made us question the cleanliness of the kitchen here. We chose to dine with Lilly's Pizza this evening because of the great reviews and it having been voted the best pizza in Raleigh. Unfortunately for us, it did not live up to the hype, for both the food and the service, and left us extremely disappointed. I've never been one to leave unhappy reviews, but I felt it necessary this time. I ordered over the phone for a curbside pickup (because covid), and as this was our first time, asked for recommendations- ultimately deciding on the Nonna for me as it was one of their most popular pizzas, and the Super Duper for my meat-lover husband. I was happy enough when I went to pick up my order, as it was a quick and easy process. The server brought the two pies out to my car, I signed and tipped on the receipt, and I was on my way. However, after I got a few miles away in rush hour traffic on Wade Ave, I got a call from Lilly's- "Hey, we gave you the wrong pizza. Can you come back?". They had given me the Super Duper and another random pizza that was not my order. Sure, mistakes happen, no biggie. Figuring out how to make a U-turn and navigate back to Five Points was a pain, especially when I don't know the area and traffic is what it is, but I was happy to do it because we were really looking forward to the amazing pizza that Lilly's was said to serve. So I drove all the way back, let them know I had arrived again, and the same server (possibly the manager?) came back out with the Nonna, my correct pizza, and took back the mistake pizza. I headed home. When I got home, because of the whole ordeal of having to drive back and forth, the Super Duper had gotten cold (the Nona was still hot). Not a big deal either, we quickly heated it up and finally started eating our dinner. I'm starving at this point, so I dig into my Nonna, and immediately hate it. The thin crust was hard, dry, and flour-y, and the texture is best described as day-old stale baguette. The balsamic glaze had soaked into parts of the crust which slightly helped, but most of it was so tough and I had to chew for a solid minute to swallow each bite. I battled my way through one slice, hoping that it would grow on me, but it did not. The cheese was also hard, the glaze was too sour, and the prosciutto was chonky like ham/bacon. Absolutely terrible. I've had much better pizza from Papa Johns, which is saying a lot. I was shocked that a $14 personal pizza could be this bad. The husband was happy with his Super Duper, but it wasn't anything special and he's not picky when he's hungry. After deliberating what to do about this "most popular" and yet so disappointing pizza I had, I decided to give the store a call. I figured at least a partial refund for the Nonna was in order, considering the hot mess that this food and my experience this evening had been. The person who answered the phone identified herself as the manager, and I believe it was the same server who had brought my pizzas and called me earlier this evening. She was unfriendly, unapologetic, and told me that I was ineligible for a refund because I, in the end, had received what I ordered. It didn't matter how the food was, nor all the extra hassle they had caused me. I even offered to bring my food back- but nope, not even a partial refund or an offer to replace my order. She ended up hanging up on me. Y'all, this is not customer service. Want to know what good service that creates happy and loyal customers looks like? Go to your local chick-fil-a. They know how to treat their guests, serve high quality and delicious food, and fix their mistakes with grace. Lilly's Pizza is NOT it. If you're looking for a great pizza, especially thin crust (my favorite!), I would highly recommend checking out the Pizza Press in Chapel Hill. Their food and incredibly friendly service are worth the drive. Unfortunately, Lilly's is not. My hope is that their management will listen to feedback and grow from their mistakes. And hopefully my negative experience is only the odd one out, and not a frequent occurrence. read more

Pizza would've been fantastic, if it was what I had ordered. I placed an order for pick up. Forty minutes and a growling stomach later it was finally ready. When I got home, I was super disappointed to see they had messed up the order. My name and what I ordered were correctly written on the receipt that was taped to the box, but toppings that I wanted had been forgotten and other toppings were added instead i.e. I hate banana peppers. I've always loved Lilly's. So on a date night we decided to visit Lilly's and actually eat in. It was barely busy when we arrived at 6pm and placed our order: Spaghetti and meatballs, a small pizza and garlic knots. Plot twist, I'm writing this review from Lilly's, it's 8pm, I have received the spaghetti just 30 minutes ago but the pizza and knots are not in sight. I have a 9pm movie to get to at the Rialto, one would think a 3 hour window would provide generous time for a pizza dinner. Not here. I just visited the front counter, after my wife was told they're "trying" 20 minutes ago. Apparently trying means nothing. I got a new update my pizza, was NEVER MADE they made a mistake but couldn't bother to tell my wife 20 min earlier. No they brushed her off and let us continue to wonder. So they apologized which has no merit anymore. I don't think we'll ever get the knots at this point, and I could care less. I used to always love Lilly's. read more

Possibly the best pizza I've had in Raleigh; possibly the worst everything else. Pros: -Insanely good pizza. I've been here a few times and the pizza is consistently amazing. I rarely over-eat since it makes my tummy ache for hours, but at Lilly's I go for that "I really shouldn't" slice since it's just that good and consequences be damned! -Reasonably priced given how excellent the food is. Cons: -Inside the restaurant is ridiculously loud. The acoustics are awful and every sound seems to be amplified, so folks end up screaming over each other just to make conversation... which only makes it worse. -The lights are intensely bright, like tanning bed bright. They should issue sunglasses and earplugs at the door. There are also a ton of random flashing lights from multiple sources in every direction that are very disorienting. -Poor table service. Even on less-than-packed nights there are constantly tables left messy for far too long. If you ask for your table to be cleaned, a worker rushes out with a rag, slaps it around the table quickly, so you get a lap full of the last diners' leavings on your lap, and they disappear without a word. -The outside seating is either a complete miss or an inside joke on customers. The awning covers barely anything, half the chairs are broken, and there are no heaters to be found. Despite that, I preferred sitting outside in the wet cold just to get away from the unbearable noise and blinding lights inside the restaurant. -I know this counts as a pretty mild complaint, but it's worth noting that if you get the free lukewarm water or purchase a soda, you get no ice. If you request ice, you get the tiniest amount (I want to say 1/4-1/3 cup worth in a 12oz cup.) How strange is that? Like does each cube of ice come out of their paycheck? I'd happily pay for a full cup of ice if that's the problem, my dude. -The bathrooms were extremely dirty to the point where my mom (visiting from across the country) opted to just hold it until we could get back to my house rather than use the facilities here. Overall: -The pizza is fantastic, but I would recommend delivery to avoid all the cons. -Dining in is a highly unpleasant experience in every imaginable way. I will be eating this pizza in the future for sure, but only via delivery. -The 4 stars are because the food is just spectacular and it can be delivered, so no one's forcing anyone to endure the horrible atmosphere of dining in. read more

Lilly's Pizza is hands down the best pizza I've ever had. Always hot, always fresh, always delicious. The restaurant seems to be poorly ventilated so sit by the door or outside if you don't like the smell of smoke and ovens. But good lord I hit it up every time I'm in town. Classic slices or novelty pies are both delicious but for different reasons.
