When I first frequented this place when it just opened, it was all the rave. This place even earned itself a place in the New York Times. I have been back numerous times since then but my recent stop today left me utterly shocked--they had took off everything on their menu that had eggs or chicken, avocado, etc. Only 3 items were left on their menu-- yogurt and fruit waffle, buckwheat, and another option which has escaped my mind. The line that used to exist here during lunch time was not present today. When I asked the cashier if that was the current menu, he simply replied, "Yes this is the new menu." Since I was really hoping for the BLT waffle, I said thank you and left. The lack of options for this place is disappointing. I don't know if the new menu was temporary or permanent, but I hope the other items come back. read more

I got a latte and a waffle this morning, which I guess was the first day they opened. The latte was as good as any I've ever had, and they serve it in Heath cups, which I love. On the waffle side, I got mine with greek yogurt, strawberries, and (I think) tarragon. Probably the best waffle I've ever had, due to the amazing texture: crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I was also impressed with how fast it all came out, even though they were pretty busy. I guess other people in the neighborhood have been walking past and watching this place come together. I love Linea Caffe and their small eco-friendly semi-Italian style coffee-espresso bar on 18th Street in San Francisco's Mission District. They roast micro-batches of coffee several time every week sourced mostly from Brazil, Guatamala, Columbia and Ethiopia, which are often award winning and reserve lots. They also feature great espresso (using their own espresso blend) - one of the best I've tried and always have their freshly brewed coffee of the day. My favorite for making my own pour overs is from their Brazilian beans - grown by several organic and sustainable farms in Brazil. Linea Caffe was launched by Andrew Barnett, considered by some to be a third wave legend. Among other things, he has been a Judge at the World Barista Championship and Cup of Excellence Awards. While they only have one location in San Francisco, they will ship freshly roasted coffee directly to you the day it is roasted. Yum! read more

Love their espresso! The place is minimalistic, but the baristas are friendly and the drinks are perfect. A tad expensive, but it's something I'd definitely be willing to pay more for ($4 for cappuccino and $5.50 for an 8 oz mocha). They use Dandelion chocolate for their mocha but the chocolate doesn't overwhelm the espresso like many other places. read more

Trendy and chic from the outside, I was surprised to see just how many awards this place has for their coffee when i walked in. Got coffee today from Linea's on 18th St. in the Mission. I always get regular coffee, which for me, is a good judge of the quality of coffee. Well, sad to say, the temperature of my coffee was at best tepid. I asked them to heat it up - I was willing to have it microwaved, but they said, they were not equipped to do it. To add insult to injury, a 12 oz. cup cost $4 (!!), and they don't take cash, so they were going to charge me $4.04 (1% for a charitable community use, which is fine). But I had the cash, said I'll just pay cash, but their MO was inflexibility. OK, not trying to be petty, they did adjust the charge to $4 straight. I was going to tip them (this was before I tasted the coffee), but they had no tip jar, as everything was no direct cash transactions and their system did not ask me for tip Here's an added kick-in-the-butt - their coffee tasted meh. Not great, not bad, just ho-hum; lacked full flavor; lacked complexity. If you're interested, my judge of good coffee would be Cumaica's. They charge $2.25 still for a 12-ouncer, they have seating, they do their own roasting, and they take cash. OK, they're located much further south on Mission St. (also a location in the Richmond). I'm sure there are other nearby coffee places that are not as rigid as Linea's and serve much better coffee. I suggest you go elsewhere for your coffee until Linea can better respond to the needs of coffee lovers. Bottom line - Linea charges way too much for lackluster, lukewarm coffee. read more

Not impressed. $4 for a small cappuccino that had almost no foam and took 20 mins to make. They are too hip for me.

Literally unbeatable friendly service matched with phenomenal coffee and a unique food menu. Try any coffee or any food item, or both, and let the satisfaction pour all over you! The atmosphere is pretty cozy tight inside, where you most likely will stand to drink your coffee, but I like that. The staff and owner really seal the deal. Sitting outside you certainly get that neighborhood coffee shop vibe. Hats off to Linea! read more

I can't comment on the quality of the coffee (but knowing who is behind roasting I am sure it is stellar), but I've gotten salads from here once or twice... every time I think, why am i spending $10 on a salad? Today was no difference - I got the arugula salad and it tastes fine. But $10 for arugula, a handful of cherry tomatoes, a slop of goat cheese and some very thinly sliced squash? Can't fault the coffee, it was good and the store is super chic. Our Server on Saturday afternoon 4/16 was beyond surly and unco-operative he was downright rude, we felt like we were imposing on his peaceful Saturday by making him get up and do his job. Starting and running a business in this area is expensive , the product and the ambiance has been carefully curated and then you hire this idiot to drive your customers away ??? Tired of all that sour hipster coffee that tastes like lemon juice+cat pee? Linea makes a smooth, toasty, deliciously well-rounded roast, and their baristas do justice to every bean! The best cappuccinos I've had in the city, consistently, served with a smile and no attitude. Plus, waffles and kale salad. I love waffles. I like kale salad. Linea sees into my soul (or at least my stomach) and makes me happy. My husband gets the "coffee subscription" (1 lb sent to our house every couple weeks) and while it's expensive, their exquisitely chosen and roasted beans make a damn, damn fine cup of coffee. read more

The waffles are so good. No really, they are freaking good. Okay you don't want a waffle cause you think it's bad for you and you don't want to get fat. Well they got tasty salads too. Or you could eat the waffle and then the salad to make yourself feel better about having a waffle. Which totally makes sense to me. When in the Mission, this is the place I go for my espresso fix (a cortado/Gibraltar). It is consistently smooth and delicious, and also beautiful (they do the latte art very well). We live in the neighborhood and stop by Linea to get coffee probably 1-2x per month. After today, we aren't coming back. The barista decided to serve us last, for some unknown reason. We were there with our two small children, ordered, and then his friend came in and he made her drink first. Then he helped the next person in line. He continued to help others until at one point, we started standing right in front of him, in case he's forgotten our order. But nope, he definitely didn't forget - when we made eye contact with him, he just stared back at us silently. No apologies, no "it's just going to be another minute". Just a confrontational stare. Maybe he hates kids (in which case, why not serve us quickly so we can get out of there?), maybe he had something else against us. I really hope it wasn't racial bias, but the whole thing was so bizarre that I can't rule it out. In any case: good-bye Linea, never coming here again. What a wonderful cafe in San Francisco. Very quaint, with not much seating, but the friendly vibe and amazing coffee give this 5 stars for sure. I had a small latte, and was very pleased with both the smooth taste and the beautiful presentation! I must admit that I'm a sucker for good latte art. Its ironic that here I was just last week bragging about this cafe to friends that they did the best coffees in the city...& thats quite an endorsement as there are many great ones to choose from. Last time we were here and ordered cofee's and a bag of beans one of the coffee's was comped (#nicetouch) but our coffee's & beans on the weekend were the full price deal. The other major downer was the kale salad with a side of chicken...um, hello where was the chicken? This place is cute. It's a cozy coffee shop just off the hustle and bustle. They have great small meals - especially the waffles - whoa. They are a bit pricey and they only have one size coffee. The kind of service that makes you feel like an a-hole for going there. A regular arrived after me and received his coffee before me. I waited and waited and finally received my medium warm latte. Linea provides good coffee on an unassuming street corner. Try the waffles; they are not your run of the mill variety and surprisingly delicious. There are also salads but I have not tried them yet so can't comment on the quality. Technically I think the waffles and salads might be separate businesses distinct from Linea, but you order everything from the same person anyway. There's no indoor seating and only limited sidewalk space outside... so I wonder how this will work when we finally have a rainy winter. Bonus points for the bike rack out front. read more
