I would've given it 5 stars but I ordered breakfast to go and when I arrived it was even close to ready. I was a bit irked. But the entire staff and patrons were all very nice. This is, LITERALLY, a little restaurant on the corner of Thorndale & Broadway. They do not, contrary to popular belief, serve corners. So if you've an appetite for angular conjunctions of structures, seek shelter elsewhere. If you're looking for some good breakfast food, you've got it. I used to live right nearby, but due to a) rarely being around the neighborhood and looking to get food in the mornings/afternoons and b) the cash-only stipulation, as I typically don't carry cash, it was quite some time before I actually ate here. I was certainly sorry that I waited so long to try it. I took my buddy Pat, who was in from out of town, for breakfast before he had to split. We each ordered omelettes, which came with hashbrowns and toast, and coffee. My omelette was loaded with mushrooms and filled with melty, melty swiss. Totally delicious. We were offered hot sauce to top, which suited us. I'm a fan of spicy foods in general, and in particular on hash browns. Pat gave a few dashes to his eggs. We both killed our plates; coffee was kept refilled through the end of the meal. Service didn't quite come with a smile, but not a scowl, either. The bill between the two of us was about $11, including tip. Mad props for cheap and filling food. We were in and out. Sure, nothing spectacular, but a solid breakfast. So, I've gone to this diner several times since I moved to Edgewater a couple years ago. It's your typical diner food and setting. They're cash only which is kind of annoying since the average meal is at least $10 with 20% tip. Normally everyone is friendly, sometimes a little too casual. I went to lunch last week and the server was yelling to a table in the next aisle while standing at our table. It was disruptive. But, today, my opinion of this place was sufficiently defined. I walked in, there were a couple empty booths - no one seemed rushed. The hostess came over and asked how many, I told her it was just me and she tells me that I can sit at the counter between 5 old men or at the tiny table a foot across from a booth seating four people and a baby in a high-chair. I asked her if I could wait for a table to open up and she told me that I can't sit at a booth with only one in the party because "...y'know, it's Saturday and we're busy". What the hell does that mean?! So, because I don't have enough people with me, I can't have the luxury of sitting where I want? Seriously, it takes me less than 30 minutes to eat breakfast and I leave at least 20% tip. Gimme a break. I considered walking out, but didn't want to be dramatic and REALLY wanted a waffle. So, I sit right next to one of the elderly men at the counter who proceeds to tell me how cute I look and ask all kinds of questions about the marathon hat I was wearing. There was no sugar for my coffee so I'm waiting for the server to come over....she never did. Finally, after seeing there were no waffles, I ordered the biscuits and gravy special. The server finally comes over (mind you she was standing at the other side of the counter reading a magazine this whole time) and says "You ready?"...so, I order. I finally get some mediocre coffee and some sugar, I entertain the old guys, and when the server puts my food down, she also leaves the check. Really? You can't wait until I'm halfway thru? I realize this isn't the Ritz, but you could TRY to be polite. THEN, this other woman comes over to the old guys - one of which is kind of an asshole and picks on everyone - and, without saying hello to them, looks at the semi-asshole and says "Not today, *insert name*, I am NOT in the mood." Just like that. Who the hell are you? I used to work in a pancake house and I know people, especially old men, can be irritating - but, suck it up and do your job. No one gives a shit about your mood. We're all in shitty moods because we're sitting at a counter which is too far from it's attached seats to possibly be comfortable for eating our meals and we just got back from the ATM where we had to withdraw an entire $20 for a $7.42 meal. I love diners - as a matter of fact, I have traveled great lengths to frequent ones that are exceptional. This is not one of them. Okay, my first review on Yelp, but NOT my first visit to the Little Corner Restaurant on the corner of Thorndale and Broadway. I've been here so many times I've lost count, and I've always had very good service and the food is really good. Standard diner fare, but that's what I want and that's what I get. I can only review their breakfast items because I'm the world's biggest breakfast freak and whenever I go to to a diner, I will *always* get breakfast, no matter the time of day. But I digress. The last time I visited, I sat myself at one of the single booths (I was by myself). It was around 12:30 on a Sunday, and the place was pretty empty. Most of the (double) booths were empty. One thing I noticed right away was that their wrap-around windows (which I love because I can look out into the street and see the city life while I eat, and give the diner a nice bright look) were completely covered with (new curtains). Big turnoff. It literally felt like I was inside a hearse or a funeral parlor. It was a beautifully sunny day outside, and the sun was NOT coming in through the windows, but they were all covered. Every single one of them. The diner was so dark it just felt depressing being there. So I decided to get up and move to one of the double booths by the window so I could move the curtains and look outside. I've sat there before, by myself, no problem. Right away, the hostess came up and very cheerfully and smiling, asked me if it was okay if I did NOT sit there. I said, why, the place is empty? She said they get pretty busy around 1:00 and was worried they would fill up. This happened in full view and earshot of the few people in the place and the staff, and it seemed everybody was looking at me. I felt offended and humiliated. I went back to my original seat and told her I would be there for a just a few minutes (I had already ordered and was in a hurry to eat and leave) and I said, fine, don't worry about it, I'm leaving pretty soon anyway. Oh, and I asked her why all the windows were covered and she said that sometimes the "kids" look inside the windows and some customers complain about that. Seriously? REALLY? You know what? If I wanted to sit in the dark and eat with the windows covered, I'd stay at home and cook my own breakfast, thank you very much. I get my order and start eating it and a curious thing happened. My coffee cup didn't get refilled. My water cup didn't get refilled. The server brought my check without me asking for it and didn't even ask if everything was okay as she put the check on the table. I felt horrible. This had never happened to me before. This place is legendary for their awesome service. I'm really hoping the hostess and the server were both having a bad day and this will not happen again. The food? Well, the food is always awesome! My bacon and cheddar omelette was amazing, as always, and the hash browns! I don't know how they do it, but those hash browns are something else. I really look forward coming here just for the omelettes and the hash browns. The rye toast is always a good addition to the mix. Their coffee is okay, nothing special, and I've had much worse, so I'm not complaining. The food always comes out super fast. I'm usually actually startled that it's done so fast, yet nothing is undercooked. It's all delicious and hot. I tipped my usual 20% and even (as I always do) rounded up to the next dollar, regardless of what happened, mainly because the food was so good. As I got up to leave, the hostess came up to me and said "Oh, I guess you could've sat by the window, I apologize" and proceeded to open the curtains and let the light come in. Just as I'm leaving? Too late for that. I will return here, because I live two just blocks away, so it would be stupid to write them off because of one isolated incident. But I will keep my eyes open the next time I'm there, and I'll be a bit more assertive. I am the customer, after all, and I vote with my wallet. I'm a very respectful and civilized customer, and I always tip very well. Treat me right and you'll have a customer for life. Simple. Last but not least, I still hate that I have to get cash from the ATM just to come here. I usually carry very little cash, so this is a huge inconvenience for me. Sometimes I have to walk 2 blocks the other way to the ATM and come back. That's annoying. Also, they have a huge sidewalk right outside their window facing west - why do you not have an outdoor seating area? What could be cooler than sitting at a table outside enjoying great diner food? I'm not looking for luxury, but a few tables and chairs outside would be nice (I *love* sidewalk cafes). For those two reasons, no matter how good the food is, no five stars from me. And if all goes well during my next visit, I might edit my review and add a star. Maybe. read more

If you love hard, sharp edged shards of plastic and pieces of rubberized mesh in your omletes, then your search is over! Every restaurant makes a mistake now and then. As a customer, the defining moment is how well the management responds and tries to keep your business. In this case, they failed. My friends and I have been semi-regulars for brunch here for quite a while - we're good customers, robust tippers, and had a cordial relationship with the management and wait staff, who have always been pleasant. Which is why this situation was so weird. When I approached the manager to pay for my meal, I very discretely showed her what I found in my food and noted that it was a foreign object. She apologized and looked at it and then said "This doesn't look like anything we put in our food". Umm.... I would hope not. But her tone implied she didn't believe me, almost as if I had put the stuff in the food myself, which made me feel put off, given how often I've patronized the place. Then she said "Do you want me to take something off your bill"?. Again, unprofessional - Any welll managed restaurant would immediately comp the meal. I didn't want to start dickering over a lousy $10 check. So I told her that it was a decision she needed to make. I was giving the restaurant a chance to make it right, without my prompting. At this point, she asked "How much of your meal did you eat". Uh oh, I knew exactly where she was going - to prorate based on what I ate before I bit into the plastic. I told her "nevermind" that I would pay the entire bill. She then charged me $5. Several years ago, I had a similar experience at Charlies Ale House in Andersonville on Clark street - only the management responded with proper mortification and comped our meals. I guess they realized the danger of losing a customer, let alone the all too real liability (choking, shattered tooth, perforated bowel). Their response gave me confidence the event wouldn't be repeated and we have continued to dine there. The same can not be said for the Little Corner Restaurant - We won't be returning nor will any of our friends. read more

Perfect little diner. Reminds me of being in my hometown. I usually get their fresh garden salad with thousand island dressing and a grilled cheese. I have a slight obsession with thousand island dressing and its usually hard to find a place that even has it, but they have it and it's always perfect! Yum. The restaurant is nothing fancy but that's ok, it's truly just a relaxed and welcoming environment. I'll be back here many more times, for as long as I live in the area! So I've lived in Edgewater for 2 1/2 years and never went in here because it looked a little dumpy - but who am I to judge, Standee's was my favorite place until it closed and it definitely looked worse than this place! So I ventured in here for breakfast a while back and walked in the door that was closest to my approach and was open. The waitress that greeted me was shocked to see me, she seemed to think I'd come from the apartments upstairs and told me so. Um, ok. Because I was by myself and didn't want to sit at the bar - she made me sit in the backroom by myself. Which was annoying, but whatever. The breakfast was inexpensive and good, but not spectacular. But we're talking eggs, bacon and pancakes, so that's fine. I was a little put off by the service, so I didn't return for a while, but I went back this week and it was better. I'm a big fan of blueberry pancakes, and they have them, so that's a bonus. The waitress was attentive, and very friendly, especially with her regulars. As one other mentioned, it's very casual here and the waitress and staff were yelling across the restaurant to various people, but it's just that kind of place, I didn't mind. The food is good, they don't rush you out so you can have a nice leisurely breakfast with your paper and leave full without an empty wallet. Just make sure your wallet has some cash in it when you come in, because your plastic is no good here. read more

My friend and I went here for breakfast because our first choice didn't work out, so it was a spontaneous and convenient place we just happened to pass by. I'm really impressed! In short: high quality food, good quantity, and low price. More detailed: this friend and I like to split a savory plate (like omelet) and a sweet plate (like pancakes). Since all the egg and omelet plates *come with* choice of french toast or pancakes, we just split one order - and I'm stuffed even still! We ordered a veggie omelet with bacon added, and chose pancakes and hash browns (~ $9.95 + ~$1.50 for added bacon). I couldn't believe all the fresh veggies in the omelet, and the bacon quality was excellent and perfectly cooked. The hash browns were homemade quality sliced & fried potatoes rather than the pre-made shredded type. The two pancakes were big and fluffy and delicious. You are able to get your typical diner breakfast here at a good price. I have had a couple of omelets as well and there were both very good. This is a Cash Only establishment which makes it a place I have to plan to go as I rarely carry cash, but for a quick, cheap breakfast, it does the job. Just like the name, a very cozy little diner, we like to go to for brunch any day of the week. Their service is always great, although the the space inside is little muggy sometimes. We like to sit on the patio and order a breakfast menu item usually eggs, sausage, potatoes, and pancakes, and a lunch type item like the buffalo chicken salad with ranch. The chicken is crispy, the vegetables fresh, and the portion is ginormous! Definitely recommend as a place as a neighborhood diner. read more

So many not good things I don't know where to start. Food was the worst breakfast I have ever had in Chicago! Greasy and not cooked pancakes :( I could see one of the cooks continuously going to the bathroom so he was sick or doing drugs - either way that is something that scares me. don't know what not to love about this place. i'm sad i'm moving out of the area soon-ish, because i just discovered this little gem yesterday! we stopped in around noon on a sunday. no wait to be seated. the food was delicious and affordably priced. i had a giant breakfast and my husband loved his deluxe bacon cheeseburger (with fries and soup.) the vibe is all retro and vintage and the service was seriously impressive. somebody went around periodically to make sure everyone's coffees were topped off, we received everything promptly. our server was quick and attentive. in my book, the old school register was adorable- "cash only" just adds to the charm. there are several nearby atms in case you forget! i'll definitely be back before we leave the area, and when we're visiting the neighborhood after we move. i suggest checking this place out! read more

No frills greasy spoon diner with typical diner fare. I haven't had chicken-fried steak and eggs in about seven years. I took the plunge at LCR and it was the artery-buster I remember from days of living dangerously. I liked that you could get pancakes instead of toast, but the service was less than stellar. Prices are between $5-10 for a full breakfast. The wife ordered the half french toast and it was a sizable portion (four half slices of FT). Ambiance leaves something to be desired, but that being said, LCR is a good place to take kids and no one seemed to care when my son spilled his water all over the table. If you're looking for a diner, and you want a break from the hipster douches that hang at M. Henry's, then LCR is the place for you. My boyfriend got a skillet and I got a reuben, both were phenomenal, and the waitress was attentive and nice not overbearing or distant. Ordered the chopped steak, hash browns, one egg (scrambled), and pancakes. First time getting the steak, and its surprisingly huge and juicy, hash browns were nice and crunchy, eggs were cooked to perfection and finally the pancakes were butter milky and fluffy. GF and I left stuffed like always. I've been coming to this restaurant consistently for the past few years now and it never disappoints. It's everything you ever wanted for a breakfast/lunch restaurant. Portions are huge and prices are awesome what more can you ask for? Yes sometimes the service is slow but who cares at least for me. The food always come out in 10 minutes or less and you can't beat the ambience in this place. For first timers: I really recommend the country fried steak with hash browns, two eggs and pancakes. I come here a few times a week and the food is great and the prices are agreeable and the crowd is friendly, but the staff is pretty soulless. One waitress that has been there a long time must really hate her job because she never, ever, smiles. For a neighborhood resaraunt where you get to know the neighbors, that is a friendly, fun place to eat, this place sucks the friendliness right out of the air. You can tell the servers are nervous about their performance and I have heard a few reprimanded on the floor by the manager in front of diners. I know the food business is a dirty business and a lot goes into making it run smoothly and cleanliness standards have to be met, but seriously, lighten up!
