Really wish to give them negative stars but unfortunately 1 star is the lowest that Yelp allows currently. I feel stupid to have chosen this place for celebrating our wedding anniversary. I booked this place almost 10 days in advance and was so so looking forward to it. First of- they have THE most annoying, sad and monotonous automated voice answering their phone. At the end of her annoying message she asks for a 'remote access password' and then hangs up!!!!! We were running late to our reservation and I tried calling them a few times to no real answer and just got this sad woman's voice over and over. Upon our late arrival, as expected, we got (epic proportion) attitude from the reservation lady about their waiting policy "our grace waiting period is 15 minutes and without any communication we cancel the reservation ". To this, I tried explaining the phone issue and all she said in response was "oh! But we didn't get any of the calls!" We were about 20 minutes late so we deserved the lecture but her overall attitude towards us and unwillingness to accept or acknowledge our side of the story just started us off on a very bad note and a terrible start to what was suppose to be an exciting dinner experience. I am never coming back to this restaurant or recommending this to anyone. This is sad because my husband liked the food a lot. Their Pakora dish is 5 stars. So is their Boar dish which comes with delicious in-house pasta (server's recommendation). Apu's spl cocktail had the perfect balance of sweetness and alcohol. Had I known that the Cauliflower dish would be a tad bitter, I would have avoided it. In desserts, the ice cream sandwich is huge and we couldn't taste any Banana. On the other hand, the chocolate mousse dish idea is an excellent one but lacks presentation. The mousse itself is creamy yet airy and I liked all the accompanying toppings. This place is my go to catch up with friends spot. The food is always evolving and changing, making each visit a whole new experience. The ambiance has nice low lighting, with a casual feel that ensures you never feel rushed or forced out of a table. The drinks are flavorful, exciting, and often very out of the ordinary. The service always feels like you're talking to an old friend, they keep things light and explain the menu in a nonchalant way to keep you informed and not overwhelmed. The manti, which has been a menu item the past few times I have visited, is a top favorite. The seafood dishes are ever changing, and every time I try them it is a whole different flavor profile proving they utilize local items and follow seasonal patterns. read more

Walked in at around 5 pm on Labor Day just to make sure we didn't have to wait for a seat. We were seated right away. The restaurant was still pretty crowded for a very early dinner which was a good sign. We ordered the fried chicken sandwich (delicious), farrow green curry fried rice (delicious) and the matzah ball ramen (not delicious). The ramen had no flavor and the chicken matzah balls tasted like cardboard if that's even possible. I would come back here to try out a few more plates with drinks-more because the restaurant has a fun atmosphere. The waiters are quite nice and the food comes plated nicely as in you might get three small pieces of food on a plate nicely arranged. I wouldn't come here if you were extremely hungry but would come for the experience. Food: We got the Crunchy watermelon which was a strange mix of savory tangy and sweet. I liked the lamb dumpling ravioli dish and also liked the blowfish tails which were small but extremely tasteful. Service: It took some time for food to arrive and I wouldn't say the service was slow but you might wait 20 or so minutes. Overall, the ambiance was more formal and less casual but I wouldn't say many people in suits were in presence. The lighting was dim. In typical Steve fashion, we went here AFTER already eating a full dinner at Coppa. We didn't eat *everything* on the menu, but I was still pretty full. We ordered the matzo ball Ramen, which he billed as "the best ramen I've ever had" and the Moroccan tripe stew, which was MY favorite. Rich broth with refreshing sprigs of mint and yogurt. I love tripe. We also had the charred avocado, which my palate didn't love (didn't hate either), but I was really just too full to fully appreciate. Drinks were good and refreshing. The request was essentially reasonable; its delivery was nasty. I suppose solo diners need not darken the tables at his restaurant (we seem to be second class citizens) though it is doubtful he owns the place. He proceeded to be obsequious with said family. That one interaction, potentially tinged with racism (I am a woman of color), soured the entire experience and overshadowed the bland kale and beetroot dish that was the closest thing to a healthy choice on the menu. The accompanying burrata was rich, but revealed itself to be too overwhelming and under-seasoned at the same time. Non-white customers and solo diners: beware of snarky discrimination with total ignorance of what good service and the mildest notion of manners might be. My friend originally took me to Little Donkey while I was on business in Boston. I now will forever respect his judgement on food. We came shortly after work around 6pm. It was already super packed with people. If this were NY, you're usually safe walking in until 7ish). We were lucky enough to get a table. Some standouts were the BLT lettuce wraps (something about the lamb bacon with pimento cheese makes it super special...get this!), black pepper popovers, and the jerk chicken. Some dishes that were just okay were the nachos and oyster po'boy. Regardless, everything on the menu looked interesting, so it was hard to choose from. Typically, I am not a huge fan of fusion but when done right, it's an introduction of creativity in flavors I wouldn't think would go together. My first experience was so great that I brought my parents the next time I was in Boston. I will definitely make it back here to try some of the newer items on the menu. read more

My friends and I came here for brunch and boy was it cold for outdoor dining. The inside was not open and there were many heaters inside. I wish they had put them out. Would have made the dining more bearable. Luckily, our server was able to get us some hot water. We opted for 2 dozen of the $1 oysters. Oysters were okay. Not briney. On the small side. They only gave us 1 slice of lemon for the dozen and a weird jelly like vinegar. Perhaps it is a substitute for the mignonette? They did not have tobasco but they had another hot sauce...I believe it was cholula. We had to ask for the cocktail sauce. We felt very demanding for asking for the usual oyster accompaniments. For food, we got the empanadas, lettuce wraps, jerk wings, burger, patatas bravas, hash, french toast and toad in hole. For dessert, we got the apple cider donuts. For drinks, I got the spicy bloody mary and my friends ordered a hot adult chocolate milk and a cold one. The empanadas were good for being "impossible." Did not have the chorizo taste but it was crunchy and tasted good. Beans were good. The lettuce wraps was DIY. We wish it was already put together. It was pretty good. I am not a fan of lamb and actually didn't mind the lamb bacon. It had that gamey smell but not overpowering. It went well with the cheese, tomato jam and pickled onions. The burger was tender and tasty but nothing spectacular. The papatas bravas was basically fried home fries. Not what I expected. The french toast was crunchy and the fruit was fresh but it lacked something...perhaps the softness? The hash was really good. The carnitas was tender and flavorful. The jerk wings was crunchy and lime-y but it needed more jerk seasoning. My favorite was the road in hole. Everything was great on that plate. The sausage, spinach and banana bread was bomb. For dessert, we got the apple cider donut. That was a mistake. It tasted like 5 day old donut. Hard and it wasn't even warm. One small donut with a munchkin size donut. The spicy bloody mary was basic. My friends like the hot adult chocolate milk but felt like there wasn't enough bourbon. I have heard nothing but great things about the food and atmosphere and finally checked them out. I don't know why it took me so long to go! They have a really varied menu so anyone can find something tasty to eat. Their pickle brine fried chicken sandwich is probably the best chicken sandwich in Boston! The outside is perfectly crunchy and the chicken is so tender and juicy. Their burger is great as well, the onion soup mayo was the perfect condiment! We also had oysters which were perfectly shucked, their oysters were a little on the pricey side though. I wish I had saved room for their chocolate chip cookie dough! Someone nearby got it and it's served on a beater from the mixer. Will definitely try that next time. They have a great cocktail menu and their beer selection is great as well. Booked a reservation for brunch and wasn't disappointed - this place lived up to the hype. We ordered a round of cocktails for the table - I got "the one In a grapefruit" (pictured). It was refreshing, very cute to look at, but maybe a little light on the tequila. Others at the table ordered bloody Mary's, which were also delicious but beware if you can't take a lot of heat. They were definitely heavy on the Tabasco. For food we ordered the chilaquiles (pictured) and Jerusalem bowl for the table. There wasn't a bite left of either app by the end of the meal. For my main course I got the pickled brined fried chicken sandwich, for which they let you choose the option of either grilled or "hot and messy". I chose the later and would recommend it - the sandwich (pictured) was the right balance of heat to coolness/crunch from the slaw. Everyone else was just as happy with their meal. Two people ordered the breakfast torta and one person commented that it had to be the best breakfast sandwich they had ever had. As a huge fan of tapas, Little Donkey was on my list of restaurants to try since moving to Boston. The first time I tried to come here on a Saturday night without a reservation, the wait was two (!) hours long. But I tried again and my eagerly-awaited experience did not disappoint! I tried the hamachi crudo, striped bass ceviche, foie gras, Mexican dan dan noodles, and laksa ramen. I really liked the hamachi crudo, though my boyfriend found it a little fishy for his taste. The striped bass ceviche tasted good, but I found the coconut and turmeric flavors overwhelmed the flavor of the fish. The foie gras was the HIGHLIGHT of the meal for me. They served it on toasted bread with apricot puree, skinless grape tomatoes and mustard seeds. The flavors went together very well and the crunch of the bread complemented the creaminess of the foie gras. The Mexican dan dan noodles and the laksa ramen were great for filling me up and rounding out the meal. The laksa ramen in particular was the size of ramen bowls you get at most restaurants (and deliciously creamy!). They served the it with chopsticks and sharing bowls which I thought was a nice touch. The Little Donkey was a very hyped up restaurant and I was always out of luck in finding a table (pre-COVID of course). However, I had made plans with a friend and I was able to find outdoor seating here on a Saturday. I was pretty excited. The hostess showed me to the table when I showed up. My friend came and we were ready to order after looking at the menu. I got a "Beast of bourbon" cocktail as did my friend. The cocktail wasn't bad-- it was fine, but not anything special. The waiter suggested the ribs (which was a special), and we decided to give it a try. I was disappointed with it. The meat was very tough, it was overly salty and the seasoning was uneven. Definitely not worth the price for the quality and finesse of the cooking. After this, I got a margarita. This was fine as well, nothing exceptional (but I wasn't expecting anything different in a margarita). We decided to order the hummus. The presentation of the hummus was good, and it was substantially better than the first plate. They had many interesting things on their menu, and perhaps if I come here again I will try them, but my first impression of the Little Donkey is that it is just super hyped. The food was of poor quality; the cocktails were average at best. One positive thing is that the server was very nice and friendly. Great concept, with a diverse menu of globally inspired tapas style dishes. Good service, fun atmosphere. We really wanted to like the food more than we did. What we tried: Squash blossom Rangoon- a version of your crab Rangoon but stuffed inside a fried squash blossom. Came with a side of dipping sauce. I would say this was good, but not extraordinary. Definitely the highlight dish of the night for me. Manti- the talk of the restaurant and a must try by most diners. Mix of flavor was decent, but I was unaware that the centerpiece of the dumpling was lamb, and I'm not a fan of lamb. I'm sure lamb lovers would enjoy this dish. Kowloon fried cauliflower- just average. A bit too sweet, a big portion. The pieces of cauliflower were big, so the center was quite bland. Street corn- overall ok, but also quite sweet. Super hit or miss. The patatas bravas were very well seasoned and quite tasty. The hummus was also very good though the naan it came with was only average. I did not really like the cocktail sauce on the crab avocado toast, it was just too weird. On the dishes I did not enjoy: the Vietnamese bologna / fried squid salad was extremely bad. The vegetables were sad and wilty and the dressing was both not tasty and inadequate. We also had an Asian style noodle dish that was ultra salty and didn't have much flavor otherwise. This was a very disappointing dining experience. The food is 100% overpriced and the "small" plates were more like "microscopic." It's a very pretentious restaurant and the food is genuinely mediocre, even though they behave like it is the top restaurant in the Boston area. We came on a night when the weather was really really bad. It was hailing, so the roads were very snowy and icy. Naturally, this made us a bit late to the reservation. We figured there would be some understanding, considering it wasn't a personal reason to be late... the roads were a nightmare. Regardless, once we were sitting for almost 90 minutes, our server came up to the table and said "not to rush you, but there is a 90 min limit on the table...." and NOT ALL OF OUR FOOD EVEN CAME OUT YET. They expected us to start getting ready to leave before they finished serving us the food we ordered. After this, the server then disappeared for THIRTY MINUTES. We kept looking for her because we wanted to order dessert before they kicked us out. Obviously, since she disappeared, we were there for even longer than we should have been in the first place. By the time she finally came back, we had our credit cards out and asked if we could order dessert with the check. She then re-stated "you have a 90 min limit...." and went on and on for 3 minutes about why they can't give us dessert because we've been sitting "for almost two hours," (again, SHE disappeared.........) I told her we were late because the roads are bad, and she said "ok but we have other reservations," (it was already almost 9 pm) She still said "she'll check with the kitchen," for us, which is all she really had to say. Instead, I asked for the check. We wanted to give the restaurant more money, meaning more tip money for our server... we even asked for it with the check originally because we knew they wanted us out. PROS: I LOVED THE FOOD. This is one of the first times that I can say every bite was memorable. The variety is amazing and the food is served quickly and with fashion. I would definitely recommend for a special occasion or for a big spender or if you're extremely dedicated to having well prepared meals that you can instagram. CONS: The price is the biggest disappointment because for a place with food this good I would frequent but the prices are so high for a bite of food. We were told it was tapas style to share so we thought that would be great since we were a small group. However, ordering and then waiting for the meal started to feel like gambling at a casino where we were hoping the next meal would fill us and then ended up taking a loss. Most plates aren't big enough for one person let alone to share. The place is also incredibly dark, almost more so than a bar which was a little strange. It was hard to tell it was even open from the outside. The darkness wasn't terrible for me but I was with my parents so it's not great for an older crowd which is funny cause I feel like the size portions and high prices are built for an older crowd. The place also has a very hipster vibe and is designed almost as a regular bar which just doesn't match the type of money you'd spend. I've been here twice for dinner - once closer to when they first opened and then just recently. It's strange because the first time we went we were able to make a reservation for a large group, but when I tried to make a reservation for another group of a similar size soon after, they told me that they don't hold reservations or have room for groups of that size. So that was a bit confusing? The first time I went, the food was pretty good... good enough that I would want to make a second visit. Their ribeye special was amazing that night. Some of the other dishes were either hit or miss to be honest. The parker rolls were okay but the sandwiches they had were pretty good. The service was great that night as well. The second time I went, in Feb 2018, it was.... not the same experience. The service was also great, and we were a difficult table because we had to keep ordering more food because we didn't realize how hungry we were so a plus for that. But the food that night... was... not great. The fried rice we got was so salty, like I was starving but couldn't eat it cause it was that salty. Everything else was meh and not memorable with the exception of the boar pasta. That was so good.... the pasta texture and sauce was just perfect. It was my friend's birthday so they were kind of enough to put a candle in a churro ice cream sandwich for my friend. When it came, we ordered a second one without trying because we knew it wouldn't be enough for six people. We immediately regretted ordering a second one because the churro was terrible. It tasted like bread... it was not sweet or anything like a churro. When the second came, we realized it was because the first one didn't have the cinnamon sugar on it. My first visit to Little Donkey was last year when the restaurant recently opened. Three of us came on a Friday night and this place was popping. We ordered the black pepper popovers, burger, razor clams, halibut biryani, octopus a la plancha, and the cookie dough dessert. We really enjoyed all of the dishes except the razor clams, which weren't memorable. The cookie dough was good, reminds me of licking the spatula after making cookies. My latest visit here was when they were serving Katz's pastrami. We had a late reservation for Sunday brunch, so unfortunately they sold out of the pastrami sopes but still had sides of pastrami available. We ordered a side of pastrami, chilaquiles, and the chicken sandwich. The pastrami was great and tasted like bacon. There chilaquiles was huge but unfortunately just average. The chicken sandwich was good and reminded me of a fancy version of Chick-fil-A but very overpriced for a single sandwich. Overall, good food, fun atmosphere, but somewhat overpriced. read more

JUST WOW! If you love Coppa you'll love little donkey! (Same owners/chefs I believe) The service was amazing! The food unreal! The lobster Rangoon's so much flavor comes with peach duck sauce to dip, very good. Also had, king crab fettuccine, manti, & you have to get the pupusa's! Thai street noodles- bleh could get something better at a legit Thai restaurant easily. Spicy fried chicken sandwich- my husband liked it with the dirty saucy style, I found it too saucy. Biscuits were good - the maple butter was good but the portions were tiny. Pao de quejo not good - a bit hard, a bit cold, only 2 balls in an order! Usually restaurants give you a basket of them. Ramen congee- interesting concept, was not good. Bloody Mary- seriously was lacking in presentation, our table got 2 and it had like dirty squeeze lemons in them and just looked overall lackluster. Overall I think the dishes all sound inventive but they're all over the place. It was fun to bring out of town friends here but I wouldn't come again. read more

I will preface this review by saying that this is not my particularly favorite type of cuisine, but ate here as a business lunch with my manager at our team. There were only two items on the menu that I liked. The burger was really incredible and the share dish of chicken wings had just the right amount of spice so as to not to make it too hot. I will say that the other six people thoroughly enjoyed their meals and no one left really disappointed. If you enjoy this type of good, then this really is the place for you and I'm certain you'll enjoy the experience. read more
