If you're here for the steam soup buns, by all means. They are very good here. But everything else is very iffy. We had the cold prawn appetizer, and the prawns were not fresh. The meat was kind of mushy and disintegrating. We had the Jalapeño Garlic chicken. First, very little Jalapeño. No spice to it. Second, very little garlic. Couldn't taste the garlic. We came here around 1pm this past saturday and was surprised it was so crowded even with the heat wave outside. The place is quite small with no waiting area so unfortunately we had to wait outside. After around 30 minutes, we were finally seated. We ordered the fried wontons in peanut & hot sauce, crab meat & pork soup dumplings, scallop soup dumplings, crab meat with tofu, and dong po pork. I was pretty disappointed with the soup dumplings because the skin was too thick. It tasted more like bread rather than dumpling skin. The crab meat with tofu was good. Nothing special. The dong po pork was very tender and flavorful, but it became too salty and saucy after a while. My favorite dish was the fried wontons. It was nice and crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. I'm originally from Shanghai, and this place reminds me of all the great dishes my parents and grandparents used to serve. There are the usual dishes aimed at the Western palate, but I highly recommend diving into the menu. This is the type of restaurant every neighborhood needs, because there's something for everyone. I go for my childhood favorites all the time and the flavor and taste just brings me back. Not many seats, but again, that just means the chefs can concentrate on what they know and do best. Crazy that I found this by accident while waiting around for my car to get serviced at Subaru around the corner, but now? Yeah I found my happy place. I LOVE coming to this place for Shanghai food. Hands down, this is one of the best family feel restaurant. I've been here so many times already and their food and service does not disappoint at all. I don't know much Shanghainese restaurants around this area so there isn't much competition I suppose. But either way, I really like their soup dumplings. I personally recommend the crab meat and pork soup dumplings. I think the scallop is alright--but that is only because I like more traditional tasting soup dumplings. In terms of food.. I think most of their dishes are great but I don't know how to recommend to you, dear reader. I only know the dishes by Chinese and honestly, I really don't think you can go wrong with ordering anything in this place. Most of their dishes that I've tried are super on point. Highlights: fried wontons with peanut sauce and pork soup dumplings One of the better Shanghai spots in the area. The staff is nice and the manager(?) is super chill. The place is not that big so the tables are always full. I usually never have to wait too long for a table but if you have a large party, especially on a weekend, expect to wait a bit. I really reccomend their friend wontons with peanut sauce. The wontons are crispy and satisfying and the sauce gives it a sweet kick. It is considered an appetizer but the portion is fairly big (10 ish wontons? I will count next time haha). The pork soup dumplings are usually delicious but make sure you eat it while its hot and fresh. The skin gets a bit hard after it cools. There's not a lot of Shanghai place in Brooklyn so I am glad one opened up around me. The place is pretty small and does get quite busy during dinner time, had to wait a few times. My friends and I usually do family style. We get both the crab and pork xiao long bao, shredded beef with peppers, salt and pepper pork chop, scallion pancakes, salty fish and chicken fried rice. Updated: Finally had the chance to eat-in at the restaurant, what a difference it makes for the sake of good food! It was a busy Saturday afternoon - there was a good 20-25 min wait. We had the crab meat soup dumpling & regular (sil loon bao); the shanghai wontons, pork & preserved veggie rice cake, & pork chop noodle soup. Kids loved everything, especially the soup dumplings and the wontons. We enjoyed our meal! Service was great, no rush. I did wonder how come they don't give out the "tong shui" during lunch... Wow! Hands down the best in Brooklyn. Got the peanut butter wontons, crab and pork soup dumplings and fish head casserole among many other things and we thought we ordered too much but we looked down and realized it was so good we just ate it all! Everything just had that homemade taste. I came here to celebrate my friend's birthday, we brought in a cake and they were so accommodating. They were able to keep it in the fridge until we were ready for it, lit it up with a candle as well, sang us happy birthday and provided us with plates for it too. The place isn't big but not small either, perfect family vibe restaurant. Ordered a round of XLB pork and, one crab and pork, fried wontons in peanut sauce and Shanghai style noodles Came here with great expectations on their xiao long baos (XLB) and wasn't disappointed however, I'm all about that soupy soup on my XLB so I wish they would've had more soup inside. But have to say, their filling was very flavorful and there was an abundant amount in there too. The soup was very flavorful, didn't taste like MSG, so I definetly enjoyed the XLBs. The fried wontons in peanut sauce and hot sauce were ordinary, honestly there wasn't anything special about them, just fried wontons in a peanut sauce without the spice. The shanghai noodles were very noodle-y, by that I mean the whole platter was mostly filled with noodles, wished there were more vegetables and more sauce on them. The Dishes we got. A5 Pork Soup Dumplings The dumplings were very good. Maybe not the best I've had, but it was in the top tier. The skin was thin, soup was very good and it came 8 pcs for $6. A8 Fried Chicken Wings Nothing really special about these, but they were nice and crispy. A9 Scallion Pancakes It came sliced into 6 pieces and had a lot of scallions in them. The outside was slightly crispy, and the inside was soft. 75 Sauteed Dried String Beans I never really understood why veges dishes cost so much. It was alright, but feels like you're paying for the sauce. S10 Crab Meat w Tofu/Veg Tofu was very soft. They use silken tofu and some brown sauce which was very flavorful. There's definitely crab meat in there so if you don't like crab taste, don't get this. I liked this one a lot. S12 Braised Lion's head meatballs I typically don't eat meatballs, but these meatballs might change my mind. They were so tender and tasty. They're pretty big and I was going to try half, but I had to go back and grab the other half after I tried it. Overall, this place is my cup of tea.. This is my all time favorite Shanghainese restaurant in all of New York. All the food here is so good and the cost for the portion is amazing. Obviously you want to get the spicy wontons with the peanut sauce, scallion pancakes, soup dumplings, mapo tofu, etc. Long story short anything you order here will be amazing and the place really gives such a homey vibe pre-covid. Its family owned and run and if you frequent the place often like I did you'll see the same servers and same cooks and just makes you know that the food is amazing. Nice local spot at the edge of Brooklyn with offerings of Shanghainese classics. I came in wanting to get my xiao long bao fix, unfortunately really didn't stand out for me, the soup was leaking out before I even picked them up. The ratio of meat/soup was off. But a must try is the Fried Wontons In Peanut sauce and hot oil, they have a truly delightful caramelization, with a touch of that nice sweet heat. Per the recommendation of the waitress I ordered the Dong Po Pork. This was a generous portion of nicely prepared make your own pork buns. The pork belly had a nice meat to fat ratio, and the brown sauce, and bok Choy complemented each other nicely. I also tried the Chicken in Jalapeño Garlic sauce which made for an awesome non-dumpling, non-pork option. It added a great variety to the meal. It had a bit of heat, that wasn't too over powering. I consider this place Bensonhurst's best kept secret. Chinese supermarkets and restaurants have been popping up left and right around the neighborhood. They're mostly Cantonese style restaurants so I never thought I would find an authentic Shanghainese placewithout stepping foot into Manhattan Chinatown. Now you've probably already read and seen that this place is small. Its packed quite often. It's a bit of a walk from the train station but it is so worth it. None of that matters because the food is great and the family that owns the place is efficient and kind. If you come here, definitely get the soup dumplings and the hot fried wontons. You won't find this quality of soup dumplings anywhere else in the borough. The wontons aren't that spicy, so don't let that steer you away from ordering them. They're covered in brown sugar which probably cuts down the spice level and you're left with a very faint hint of spiciness. The first time I had time I wish I had ordered another serving of them. They'll leave you dreaming about them until the next time that you come. Another favorite that my girlfriends and I usually get is the crab hot and sour soup. Its loaded with actual pieces of sweet crab. I once had to stop drinking it so that I could savor the delicious chunk of crab meat. Just writing about is making my mouth water and I had it only two days ago. I've had other dishes and appetizers from Liu's that are all really solid as well. If you're having trouble deciding what other dishes to get, I suggest looking around the restaurant and see what else everyone else is having. They also offer free tong sui (Chinese dessert) after your meal. We just had a few dishes as we weren't too hungry but all of them are great. Vegetarian Mock Duck - love the flavor, and it is not dry like some other places. Pork Soup Dumplings - 8 in an order for just $5.95, that's the cheapest I've seen and taste as good as the ones in Nan Xiang @ Flushing. My only complain is that the dumpling skin is a bit soft, a couple almost torn just by picking them up. Preserved Vegetable & Shredded Pork noodle soup - very flavorful and love the thick noodles. Dong Po Pork (with 4 buns) - oh, my favorite dish of them all, the pork is tender, juicy, savory, sweet, added in between the buns - Yummmm.. will definitely come back for more. Found this spot on yelp as I was around the area and wanted to try it out based off the good reviews I read! So I made the decision with my friends that this was where we were gonna eat. Parking in the area is always tough so I was the first one there to reserve a table for 4. I got seated down right away and looked through the menu as I waited for the others to find parking. Here's what I thought! Soup Dumplings: Really good and that's all that needs to be said, expected nothing less from a hole in the wall place. Good ratio in the stuffing and soup base was tasty. Fried Wontons: Read a bunch of comments about it being too sweet and not that spicy but still wanted to try it myself. After trying one, it was on the sweeter side and could of used a little more spice kick but I still enjoyed it and it didn't stop me from finishing it all. Scallion Pancakes: They were good, nothing amazing but good. I love scallion pancakes so I will always get and enjoy them whenever I see them on a menu. Noodles: Be Warned! When you see it on the menu, the prices of the noodles are all about $5-$8 so you think you'll be getting one portion of noodles. Nope, it is BIG and family sized. I am a sucker for thick noodles so I was happy with it. There was shrimp, chicken, pork, and a bunch of other items so it is true to its name. Sizzling Beef: My friend ordered this all to himself and finished it with nothing left on the plate. The best (and one of the only) authentic Shanghainese restaurants in Brooklyn. Usually you would have to go to Chinatown to get Shanghainese food, but Liu's has been here for many years and is a staple in this part of Brooklyn. While the soup dumplings are not as good as Nan Xiang's in Flushing, they are better than any soup dumplings you can find in Chinatown, by far. Of course the thing to get here are the soup dumplings. My personal favorite are the crab meat and pork, followed by the scallop, and finally the pork. The addition of seafood to soup dumplings imparts a subtle sweetness to the soup dumplings, which is so delicious. I also really like the fact that there's actual crab meat INISDE of the dumplings, and not just a tiny dollop on top (A LOT of places do this unfortunately), so you know you're getting your money's worth. At $8 for 8 dumplings, it comes it to a dollar each which is quite standard throughout New York. Of course, no Shanghainese meal is complete without the other notable foods. The scallion pancakes aren't bad (personally never been a fan of them), and the cold appetizers here are great. My personal favorites are the vegetarian duck and the kau fu. I also like the Shanghainese rice cakes here. It's super saucy with a lot of flavor and proteins. I also really like the twice cooked pork over rice here. It's super tender, but salty, sour, and spicy in all the right proportions. Definitely try this one out! Overall a solid (and the only) place to grab soup dumplings in this part of Brooklyn. We were in the neighborhood, and I was craving some Shanghai-nese food. We loved Liu's - we got in just as they opened on a Sunday morning, and ordered a couple of trays of Ciao Long Bao (excuse all mis-spelling!); we think the crab version is much better than the scallops. One suggestion would be to step up the ginger and vinegar, which is a crucial piece for how we eat the Bao. The small bowls are not enough, but the staff happily supplied more on request. We also ordered a couple larger bowls, and the only one I can describe was the Ma Po Tofu. Not nearly as hot/spicy, there were a few Sichuan peppers and it had a good flavor that you could eat without burning. Stacey ordered a beef-and-peppers which had great wok-hei. We took the larger bowls home but def consumed the Bao on-site. When we left there was a line of regulars waiting out the door. Its not a large spot, seating maybe 25-30 max. Great service from the young staff. Including good tip for the meal (no alcohol), we paid $70. read more

The dong po pork & braised pork belly are very tender but for me it's way too much fat although it is served with greens too counteract the fattyness, the taste is still great.
