I really like this restaurant. Mainly because it seems to be a hold over from the 1940's. The food is hardy and plentiful. The service is good for the most part. Especially if you are served by some of the longtime staff. I am disheartened to read the comments about the attitude of the owner "Pete". Stopped in for dinner on our motorcycle ride down the coast. Terrific service from waitress Bella. She's courteous, quick, accurate and has a lot of pizzazz. Food is also very good, comes to the table quickly. I recommend the margaritas, too. All in all a lucky find for us. If you don't want to drive 40 miles to Monterey, give the Longhouse a try. Came here with my THEN gf for lunch. Everybody rants n raves about this place, how its the best breakfast in Gilroy, bla bla bla. And everyones there...literally. We walk in and theres like 3 people she knows. Anywho, I had a spicy burger. Like the Diablo burger or volcano burger, whatever. The patty was big but kinda dried out. The bun was pretty good, soft and fresh tasting. The cheese and pepper (not peppers, pepper - singular) were alright. Its a greasy spoon. I think for omnivores this may be a good home-style breakfast place, but it was kind of difficult to find anything as a person with a mild egg allergy and a vegetarian diet. (Although, to be fair, breakfast is the hardest meal for me to eat out because most breakfast places do a very egg-and-sausage-centric breakfast.) I asked them to make breakfast potatoes for me without the bacon, and they obliged, but I don't think they necessarily separate or scrape their cooking surfaces particularly well between orders--I found a chunk of bacon and a few stray bits that I ate around, but I think I got some egg cross-contamination as I felt ill afterwards in the way that I do after consuming things with a tiny bit of egg in them (so at least I'm fairly sure it's cross-contamination and not disregard for the waitress' instructions). I'd also asked for an avocado on the side, which went completely forgotten by the kitchen and waitress until we inquired about it. I think they did better with my friend's black pepper allergy, as I don't believe she had a reaction after eating her meal. I think both of my friends enjoyed their meal, and while what I had wasn't bad, as the Yelp star rating caption puts it, "I've experienced better." If I do go again, I think I will go for a mound of fruit--they had some manner of fruit plate at a nearby table and that looked pretty good. read more

Finally the family and I decided to cross the street and head over to Longhouse instead of 152 BBQ. Place always looks packed and today we were in-between the hours of lunch and dinner on a Saturday. Wow! Glad we did. Service was awesome. Smiling faces that never let our drinks get half empty. Food was great and had huge portions. Boys all had hamburgers and I decided to get a stack of pancakes, eggs and sausage. Everything was great! Food took a little while to get out to us but we felt it was worth the wait. Place looks pretty nice inside, the outside was a bit dated and worn. I love a good diner. Hope this place continues the good work and we can become regulars. While some do not like the ambiance, i felt it was not bad. That said, we did sit in an area that was drafty and it was a cool evening. There was a band, thank goodness they did not start playing while we where there. I could only imagine dinner over a loud band. The steaks were decent.The service was rushed but efficient. Very friendly service. Greeted right away. Bella took my order right away and was very sweet. I ordered the French dip sandwich and she asked me if I wanted to add a salad or soup along with it. My food was served within 7 minutes. My sandwich was he been with a lot of beef and it was served along aI jus. The sandwich was a very flavorful and the french fries were tasty and crispy. Hey I will admit that this place sucks for anything but breakfast. But they do make an excellent breakfast. The waitresses there have always been very nice to me. I am going to say that this place is consistent (based on my standards) for breakfast. I have come here several more times and the service and the food is good. I just love their breakfasts and they are very accomodating like an old diner should be. I have gone here for lunch and dinner. If you don't feel like cooking dinner because everyone wants something different, then go here. I have had their burgers, sandwiches and they have been good. Their salads and their dressings are homemade and their fresh bread is 'fresh' and hot. Diner at it's best, old school, not fancy, and good down to earth service. I forgot to mention the fake grapes that cascade the fancy nogohyde booths, Love it! I love me some dive bar every once in a while... They added a patio which is cool because now i can smoke with my beer (hooray!) There's live music every wednesday and friday... and you haven't lived until you've heard a country/rock band cover black eyed peas... and i think there was some gaga in there at one point too! First impressions: Coffee is darn good and strong here which I always take to be a excellent sign and sure enough, I was not disappointed. Granted, the place appears from both outside and in to be a divey, greasy spoon kinda joint that could go either way... but man did it exceed my wildest hopes! The Greek owners/chefs of 30+ years whipped up what is by far the best breakfast I have had in many, many years. And here I was thinking I had it good up in Portland... I was just blown away by the flavor in my usually bland egg white mushroom omelet and hash browns. Everything is made proudly from scratch and it really makes the difference here. The staff were friendly but not the quickest bunch - fair enough as the place was jumping with locals in the know on Sunday morning. I love this place!! Great tasting, affordable food in a town that can be a little pricey at times. Breakfast is classic fare, great big slices of ham, real jams, though packaged, for your toast, not "mixed fruit jelly". For me the highlights are the pork chops, their house prepared fried chicken, (not out of the bag). The fish and chips are fresh battered cod, not that crappy tilapia or swai. Walked in at 8:10 at night. Greeted immediately asking how many. We told the woman four plus a baby. She asks "four and a high chair?" I said " I guess"..... I don't consider my child to be a high chair but whatever..... she vaguely points at a row where there are three tables right next to the kitchen, where it is extremely loud and all the food smells are overwhelming. She didn't walk us to any table in particular, just gestured like we were bothering her. So we picked a table at the window where we were further away from the food stink and could hear each other speak. The server who came was very nice and went to get us a high chair. Then the same woman who asked us how many started screaming at the server that high chairs only go at the three tables by the kitchen. She came over and told us there was some issue with the aisle size or something. I would understand if there were you know.... Any other patrons in the area we were sitting in but there were ZERO so a marching band could definitely walk past the high chair no problem. We were super hungry and came there specifically because we wanted steak so they missed out on our business all because of this idiotic high chair debacle. Been to this restaurant a couple of times now. The wait staff are super friendly and attentative to your needs. The food on the other hand is over priced and doesn't taste well. My first experience was breakfast, got waffels. They were dry and not fluffy as one would expect. The second time I tried one of their steaks medium. The steak was poorly seasoned and well over cooked. The third time, I got the calimari steak. Like the other steak, it was cooked too much and poorly seasoned. The most recent experience was with a hamburger. Figured it would be safe as how can you go wrong with a hamburger, wrong! The meat tasted like the grill plate had not been cleaned in awhile. The french fries seemed to cooked in old oil, they were horrible. Asked for BBQ sauce as their Western burger doesn't come with it. I love this place but have only been here for breakfast. My favorite dishes are the pancakes, chicken fried steak & eggs, top sirloin & eggs and I love their hashbrowns (I order them extra crispy). I have always had good service by the wait staff so no complaints there.......But as another reviewer mentioned, the restaurant needs a makeover. The place is a little on the dank side. It isn't super clean and the furniture is as old as the hills. My sister-in-law won't even eat here because of its shabby, rundown decor. So the breakfast food gets 5 stars but the actual inside of the restaurant gets 1 star. I will definitely come here again. read more
