This was a restaurant referred to us. I thought my plate was pretty delicious. We came in for lunch. I had the number one on the lunch menu, that included a chile relleno, an enchilada and a taco. My chile relleno was pretty delicious. I hate when restaurants try and make it an omelette. That's one of my pet peeves for sure. I had them put the green chile and the enchilada sauce on the side, just in case. Next time I would probably opt for the green chile. It was pretty tasty. Was hopeful this could be a go to place for the ever calling enchilada craving, but sadly the food was only average. The only thing food wise I remember was the salsa...which is not for good reason. It has a taste reminiscent of tomato paste with tamarind in it, and then I checked out the ingredient list on a jar of the stuff at Sprouts later in the week and it has beef, chicken and pork product in it. Vegetarians beware! Most notably, the service was awkward, the staff seemed stressed out, and the manager openly spoke harshly to the hostess. Los Cuates is one of my favorites. I recommend the beef fajitas and iced tea. Skip the older location across the street. HISTORY: Los Cuates means "the twins" in Spanish. The original owner had a set of twins and named it in their honor. He died about three years ago and the family sold it. Fortunately, the quality has remained the same. read more

This is a superb choice for dining in Albuquerque, though not "the number one MUST"...if you are dining around ABQ and have the chance to sample several places, you do definitely need to make a visit - however it has the BEST salsa in the city. The thing which makes Los Cuates unique is it's salsa, period. They sell it in jars (recommended) and it is spicy, smoky-sweet, and savory beyond belief. I have never tasted a salsa like it, ever. When eating chips and salsa before the meal, it is VERY easy to simply fill up on this addicting substance since they keep the free chips and salsa flowing like a river till the meal comes. I have been here several times and always take food home due to this predicament. The menu is standard New Mexican and very good and solid. It's easy to forget the food when the salsa is so over-the-top. You won't be dissapointed in the grub, but what you''l talk about for days afterwards is the salsa. read more

There was a time when this was my go to New Mexican restaurant. I kind of stopped going when I went gluten free several years ago. Tonight we went for a change of venue and the convenient location to our house. We were sat right away. It took awhile for our waitress to come to our table, but the chips and salsa came fast. The chips were overflowing but a lot were broken into tiny pieces as if they emptied the bag onto the plate. I was pleasantly surprised that now they have a gluten free chili option. Their veggie red and green are both made without flour! The interesting and disappointing thing I discovered is that that actually put flour in their refried beans! What?! Ok, they have whole beans so I'll give that one a pass. My husband got tacos and I had enchiladas. Our food was OK. The kids each got something from the kids menu. For 7 dollars you get a sopapilla and your choice of sherbet or ice cream. We were never offered the ice cream. I wouldn't of cared except I felt the price was high for the kids meals for the food they got. We we got our check we asked our waitress about it. She brings out blue bonnet cups with a plastic spoon. Are we at a restaurant still? Plastic spoons? Moral of the story. The service was OK, the food was OK. I won't check it permanently off my list, but I don't think we'll be back unless someone else wants to go there. read more

This place is one of my favorite spots to get good New Mexican food. I have frequented this place on my many visits and keep coming back. I love their carne adovada and their salsa. I usually grab a couple of their jars of salsa to bring back home with me since there is nothing in my area similar to it. I ask them to make my carne adovada hot and usually regret it after a few hours.. But, it's definitely worth it. Sopapillas!! Yumm, you cannot find these in Cali and are a treat, a lot of people eat them as a dessert, but I prefer to munch with my meal, instead of a boring tortilla, stuff the sopapilla with all that spicy lovin' goodness and go to town, like a New Mexican flatbread sammich! I had the posole and two chicken tacos. Definitively Ne Mexican food. The other folks that were eating with me had a plate of blue corn enchiladas, and another place of an Indian taco. This place was full and the food was quite good. The chicken tacos really stood out for me, since I am used to the traditional Mexican tacos that are served here in Los Angeles, but I am an open guy and will give things a try. I was so amazed at how good the hard shelled chicken tacos were. Man! Los Angeles is definitively missing something of southwestern food. The reviews of this place seemed a little mixed, but we really wanted to try some authentic New Mexican food before we left Albuquerque, so we came here for lunch on a Wednesday. The food was, in a nutshell, incredibly delicious and satisfying. We adored their signature salsa -- amazing chile flavor. We bought four jars when we left. I am a vegetarian, and was a bit nervous ordering in a place this authentic. But I've been a vegetarian for 20 years, so I can usually sniff out any hint of lard or chicken/beef stock from 10 paces. I ordered the chiles rellenos lunch special, with green chile sauce. It comes with rice and refried beans (I didn't eat the beans, since they're usually not vegetarian). I ate every bite of the absoluely scrumptious peppers and chile, and the rice was made with margarine as far as I could tell, so also veggie (and tasty). My companion ordered a combination plate that had a chile relleno, enchilada, and chicken taco. He got both red and green sauce, but said he would have stuck with the green next time. I tasted the red and it was good, but nothing to the amazing green sauce. The chiles were huge and delicious, and everything was spicy but not too spicy. The only disappointment was the margarita my companion ordered. We'd skip that next time. The free sopapillas were AMAZING. I've never had such tasty ones. Yum, yum. After the balloon fiesta, we stopped some locals and asked for restaurant recommendations and this is what we got. For first time New Mexican food-ers, we were blown away with the deliciousness! The restaurant is pretty big and portion sizes were impressive. Carne adovado burrito was sooo goood! My only negative comment is that the (very large) glasses of coke we ordered were both flat. I would give this restaurant a zero if I could. Do not call to take out, they will put you on hold and never take your order. I was placed on hold for 5 minutes on my first call. I called back a second time and was placed on hold again only to be disconnected. I decided to give it another try and called a third time only to be put on hold again in the middle of placing my order. Very poor management and customer service. This is an Albuquerque favorite! The combo de Antoinette (half eaten) in pic was delicious . My boyfriend had the shredded beef enchiladas and loved it. My only complaint would be there is too much food on each plate. The salsa is unique to Los Cuates with a sweet taste to it...but it still clears your sinuses. Hype prices are reasonable (10.95 for my plate, 14.95 for my boyfriends. Service is good -not great but food is delicious! read more

I always look forward to visiting Albuquerque, and this place is one of the reasons. Mexican food is one of my favorites, and this is not your typical Mexican food. It is New Mexican food, and has a flavor all its own. I always do the combination plates, and I enjoyed the chili relleno once again. The red and green chili are amazing and I always do both... I don't agree with the other reviewer that said there is too much salt, I find I like to add a touch more to it, but that is my own taste. The service we received was good and friendly. My iced tea was never empty! I often wonder if people who think their service is poor, is due to them being a poor customer? But, I digress. I was once again happy to have some of my favorite food in New Mexico. I hope I don't have to wait another year for more. read more

We dined here on a Saturday evening and were seated right away. They provided a sling for my infant car seat. The service was great. We had Riciardo. The salsa was very unique. It was very dark and thick. I liked it but my mother in law didn't care for it. I had combo 6 (enchilada, taco, carne abodava) and my mother in law had a chicken tostada. My friend and I went to lunch Sunday March 19th 2017. We both ordered the chicken chimichanga smothered with the green and red chili. it tasted great during the meal. However later that evening we both have food poisoning down to the point we couldn't leave the commode. So today Monday March 20th I contacted the restaurant spoke with Edwin the manager and explain the situation. I told him we were not looking for a free meal we were just letting him know that we got food poisoning from this restaurant. I told him exactly what we ate and he said " I had same thing for lunch and I'm just fine!". It is truly disappointing in his lack of customer service in the fact that he didn't even seem to care that we got sick from the food. I will never eat at this restaurant again, nor will I ever recommend it again to any of my friends that travel. read more

I would give it no stars but it won't allow me. I have Mercer put a review before but that's how bad it was that I'm putting one. First thing they took over 30 minutes to bring our food. When they did it was such a disappointment, the posole look like they have left it over night outside and just serve it like that it look very gross. I ask if they can make a shrimp tostada and they told me they could their version of it was a taco salad with a lot of beans inside and like five shrimps!! My mom order the tortillas were very cold and very thick and look old. The beef was very hard to chew. When I ask to speak to the manager she didn't even bother to apologize she just kept saying the only thing I can do is give you 20% off your total over and over again and was very rude about it!!!!! We went here based on a recommendation from the agent at Hertz at the airport. We said we did not want a chain restaurant and he suggested this. Also got a free appetizer from a brochure he gave us that we presented to our waiter. Food was excellent. Service was good. Salsa was so good we bought a jar of it to take home with us. If you eat here, please bring an open mind. This place is amazing and I love coming here. The Salsa has that sweet spicy taste to it and what makes it is the fresh tortilla chips that come with it. This is what makes it unique, for some the salsa is the deal breaker and it's also what makes Los Cuates unique. They experimented, they conquered. At first I was iffy about the salsa but I've come to love it and I've discovered that without the freshly made chips, it's just not that great. The salsa isn't that chunky, watery salsa you normally see. It's a deep red abyss of mystery when you first see it but I love it now. I come for the salsa! The food comes with big portions, which I love and the red chile is so tasty! I usually order a restaurant favorite; the roast beef burrito which comes with shredded roast beef, wrapped in a tortilla smothered with either red or green chile and covered in cheese. They have gotten this order wrong, twice, just be sure they have shredded beef, not ground. The sopas are average and tasty smothered with honey. YUM. The service is also above average as far as I've noticed. I've never had any big complaints here and most of the employees have been working here for years, which is always a good sign. read more

First, the five stars goes to the server I had specifically. I thought her name tag said Jessica, but the name on my receipt said Jessamyn (I think?) Anyways, she was an amazing server. And as a server myself that means a lot. Most servers are pretty lax on being served on, but I am not. A lot of things I look for while being served is how my server handles their section plus the situations they are handed. And hands down she did excellent. My family ate there last night and while we originally called ahead for 23, with some miscounting on our end, ended up with about 30 or so. First, most places that put one server on big parties really screw up. But that was not the case last night. She took our drink orders as people were still arriving and managed to remember where EVERY drink went despite the table playing musical chairs. I was so extremely pleased with how efficient she took and placed our order. For 30 plates to come out in about 20 minutes is AMAZING, especially with only one server taking the order. Even better, only mistake I noticed made was a hard taco came out instead of 2 soft tacos, literally amazing. She kept ALL our drinks full and even kept our separate tickets in order. As a server, I have NEVER been this satisfied with another server. So, sorry Los Cuates, this review is strictly on her. She did an amazing job! If you see this, you were absolutely made for the customer service industry and I hope everyone you work with try's to do your standards with your customers. I am old. I was raised in NM, now live in Santa Rosa, CA. I love New Mexican food. Los Cuates scratches me in all the right places. Du Frank, the combo plate, consists of a cheese enchilada (great) a tamale (very good, and I am not a tamale person) and a chili relleno. The chili relleno is my test of a Mexican kitchen. Oh yes!!! Fresh fried battered hatch chili, perfect cheese melt in your mouth heaven. Only Chuy's in Austin matches this one. (I know it's a chain, I don't care). Service was perfect. Decor is typical, nice, clean. Sopapillas included. Price not expensive. I am going back. Maybe tomorrow before I fly home. read more

We watched the waitress follow part of our party out of the restaurant loudly berating them because she felt that she had not been tipped enough. When she saw a couple of us waiting for a friend in the restroom before leaving, she continued to loudly exclaim "what terrible people you are." and that she knew "all about our type" who "do this all the time." It was hard not to be aware of the fact that most of our party was Native and she was white. She then proceeded to continue to loudly demean us call us "disgusting" and "gross" to her coworkers while shooting us dirty looks. Whether all this behavior was racially charged or not, it was incredibly unprofessional, unnerving, and disrespectful. I will not be coming to this establishment again. read more
