If you eat here, please bring an open mind. This place is amazing and I love coming here. The Salsa has that sweet spicy taste to it and what makes it is the fresh tortilla chips that come with it. This is what makes it unique, for some the salsa is the deal breaker and it's also what makes Los Cuates unique. They experimented, they conquered. At first I was iffy about the salsa but I've come to love it and I've discovered that without the freshly made chips, it's just not that great. The salsa isn't that chunky, watery salsa you normally see. It's a deep red abyss of mystery when you first see it but I love it now. I come for the salsa! The food comes with big portions, which I love and the red chile is so tasty! I usually order a restaurant favorite; the roast beef burrito which comes with shredded roast beef, wrapped in a tortilla smothered with either red or green chile and covered in cheese. They have gotten this order wrong, twice, just be sure they have shredded beef, not ground. The sopas are average and tasty smothered with honey. YUM. The service is also above average as far as I've noticed. I've never had any big complaints here and most of the employees have been working here for years, which is always a good sign. read more

Such as shame, been coming here for 16 years and have never gotten service this bad as long as I've been going to restaurants. They sat us in a section that looked like they had already been closed down. The First Lady asked us how we were doing dropped off chips and salsa and left. The server seemed annoyed and didn't pay attention to much. Ran out of chips right just before they started a loud vacuum when my fiancé and I were talking. I went to the manager to ask why they had even sat us there when clearly the staff wanted to leave and had explained the situation. He ensured us he would take care of us. When I returned to the table I saw that they had gotten her order wrong. By that time I had enough I went back to the manager to tell him yet again what happened. He went to get it remade but by that time we just wanted to leave. I told him to cancel the remake, he wanted to box it up for us but we came to enjoy dinner and conversation not free food and shity service. By far one of the worst experiences ever. I have to preface this by saying that I love New Mexican food. It's really a different, unique style of cooking that deserves respect. While Los Cuates has some good "regular" Mexican food, what you're really after here is the New Mexican cuisine. I have to say, this is one of the best. Sweet, but hot salsas. Soft corn enchiladas. Freshly roasted chili. And of course, don't forget the typical New Mexican sopapillas (fry bread) with honey. Amazing food overall. I don't think I've ever had a dish here that I didn't like. We always pick up a jar of salsa to go when we leave -- it's just the sweet hot red chili and it is delicious and so different from the food you find in most of the rest of the country. read more

North 14 has very few restaurants so we frequent this one fairly often. Tonight was a complete shock from the normally decent food and service, with the exception of a few hiccups now and then. This evening I had to get our own drink napkins after the drink was spilled while putting it on the table, get silverware from another table, and the kicker was when I asked for butter twice I was told they "were out of butter"....seriously?? The waitress was new and so forgetful that when she brought our credit card receipt she said "have an awesome night and thanks for putting up with me." Told the hostess on the way out that I was disappointed they were out of butter and got "oh yeah, sorry about that". The kicker was the country karaoke that was so loud we couldn't hear each other talk. It was not even close to mediocre. I visited yesterday. On Fridays they have shrimp fajitas which were good. The only complaint is that the shrimp still had the tails on when served. That's fine for battered shrimp since the trails are like a handle but for fajitas it was a pain to fish them out and manually cut them off. read more

Plush New Mexican Cuisine meets Old Style Spain. This place rocks the guacamole and enchiladas. Service was very nice, willing to split a complicated order for each set of customers, so no high math required. I was surprised it was so good. I love this restaurant! Stopped off in for lunch as it's been years since I have been here and the food is still delicious! I ordered the 3 ground beef enchilada plate with red sauce, beans and rice. The meal came with a sopapilla which was the icing on the cake for me. The red sauce was spicy, and very flavorful. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Portions were very healthy for a hearty appetite. There are several locations in the city but I came to the Lomas Blvd location. This place is definitely a New Mexican Gem. Been here a few times...dined in and had take out... Pros - extensive menu of New Mexican food. Large, hearty portions. Friendly staff, fast service. Sopapillas are cooked well (i.e. not soggy and too oily). Really nice chips and sauce given complimentary upon being seated. Cons - Kind of a weird ambiance. Half of it looks like a night club, with dim lighting and an old fashioned bar. The other half is the casual seating area that looks like a fast food joint. First of all, the way you can tell if a Mexican restaurant is good is if the salsa is good. And unfortunately, this restaurant completely lacked far my expectations. The salsa tasted like it was from a can. Secondly, the beans also tasted from a can. The tamales were very watery and the enchiladas tasted dry. The rice was a little dry too (don't be fooled, they try to sell you drinks to mask the taste of the food). Ordered catering for a work party. We ordered for 10 people and had a combo of red cheese enchiladas and green chicken enchiladas. The platter we ordered also came with rice, beans, and garnish. We got take away. It was okay. Sopas were a cheap add on 75 cents for 2, 50 cents for 1. They were the best part of the meal. had the combo with a tamale(pork) shredded beef taco, and chicken enchilada. X mass chile. It came with beans and rice 7.50$ and you get a ton on food. Rice was spanish style and kind of watery, same with beans. Meats were seasoned well. My partner had the Carne adovada buritto, said it was pretty good. Not the best or the worst New Mexican food. Chile sauce again was a bit thin, not quite as spicy as I would hope. But that could be a good thing if eating with someone more sensitive to spice. For value and edibility I am a not sure I would go back. It was ready really fast, the order was ready in 3 minutes. I ate half of mine and got indigestion pretty quick. I have a iron clad stomach and had to go to work, and I did not feel good. I am not sure I want to eat the leftovers in the fridge. I am leaning towards two stars because I ate it and it tasted decent. I think another yelper said this is the McDonalds of Mexican restaurants I think that nails it spot on. I just flew into Albuquerque and stopped by for takeout before heading to my hotel. I ordered the 3 chicken enchilada plate with refried beans and Spanish rice topped with lettuce and tomatoes. The plate was put in a round aluminum togo container. I got to my hotel, checked in and sat down to eat. However the bag they gave me didn't have any utensils or napkins. I didn't know that I had to get it myself before leaving. I had to spend another 5 minutes to go borrow some from the hotel. Overall the food tastes very good. I like the enchilada plate here better than Cervantes. I would have rated Los Cuates a 5, but knocked it down a star for the missing utensils and knocked it down another star because they don't include sopapillas on togo orders. Got a coupon from the Alibi for Buy 1 get 50% off the 2nd meal - it had no expiration date but the manager wouldn't take it, just said they weren't taking that coupon any more. More than that, he didn't even come to the table himself, he made the waitress give us the bad news. She said there was a sign posted but we couldn't find any sign! The carne adovada is awesome and comes with a sopapilla sent straight from heaven - chewy, light, crunchy on the outside (you almost forget the calories) . My cousin and I entered and ordered take-out for the whole family at the designated take-out area and then, since our order was huge and we figured it would take awhile, we entered the main restaurant to have a cocktail at the bar while we waited. I wish I knew the bartender's name so I could give him the shout-out he so amply deserves! He was genuinely friendly and helpful, bringing us complimentary chips and salsa and asking for the name our order was under so he could bring it to us when it was ready. The drinks were delicious and the service he provided was so good, I regretted that we were not staying to eat dinner at the bar. The food, as always, was great New Mexican food. Cheesy, homey, spicy, comforting. One of us ordered a combination plate that was composed of enchiladas and rellenos INSIDE a big, freshly made taco shell smothered with red and green. It was impressive, a little frightening even. In general, I would give the food at Los Cuates a hearty and satisfied 4 stars. The recent service we received, however, earns them another star. Disgusting. I ordered a chicken chimi & couldn't even eat it. It was made with a disgusting runny chicken mess in the middle. No white meat in sight. We were visiting from Seattle, WA hoping that we will have a better Mexican food in NM. We tried couple of restaurants & it was just okay... When we went to Los Cuates, it was very busy on Wednesday. So we figured it must be very good. We ordered Cadillac Gold Margarita & Blue Corn Enchilada Plate which was highly recommended by the waiter. Drink was okay... and the food... OMG! If NM people think that this is a GOOD Mexican Food, they need to visit Seattle. My cat won't even eat this food... I cut in the middle of the Enchilada, it was fried ground beef... no seasonings no color what so ever. Just like you fry ground beef at home... that is all & wrapped in a blue corn tortilla... One of my favorite places to eat since moving to New Mexico! Everything I have gotten here has been great! I know I shouldn't order the Burger at a New Mexican Restaurant but its so damn good! The bun is what makes the burger so delicious :) it's so light and air. The espinaca ( I know I spelt that wrong) queso is arguably the best queso in ABQ. Prices are great and beer specials are even better! I suggest sitting in the bar area if you go, it's really cute and lively. read more
