Best vegan restaurant i have tried, excellent service and friendly staff. Great place to eat every time we visit sf

I don't know where to begin. I was highly recommended this restaurant by some colleagues of mine, it being one of the best vegan restaurant chains around. My excitement turned into disappointment when I walked in. The cooler that's located right by the front desk is holding on for dear life. In it, they stored their pies, cheesecakes and other deserts. inside of it also had a bowl for the water leakage from the cooler, an overripe avocado, and bags of sliced pineapples. Also to my surprise, I had a quick peak inside their kitchen from where the counter was. Needless to say, I was shocked to see what looked like overused oil stored in a re-used seasoning jug, and grease stains all over the wall by the stove. I would expect to see that in a high oil kitchen, however, it being vegan, promoting healthy living, it looked the opposite. The vegan orange chicken I order was flavored good! However I couldn't wrap my taste buds around the taste of freeze burn nuggets that were quickly deep fried. The taste of the sauce they added at the end masked the slight starchy freezer flavor. The second dish I ordered was what I deemed could've been my favorite dish. Sadly that wasn't the case. Presentation was stellar! And the service was proportional. A bit pricy but it looked good at first sight. However, upon eating it, I quickly was taken aback by the strong rancid taste. The batter they battered the mushrooms in was bitter, suggest it was old flour, and the the oil it was fried it was definitely re-used as it tasted very very rancid. I really wanted to like that dish because I love anything mushroom related. I hope they try to fix the issues explained above for this restaurant really has bright expectations. I gave this place five stars in 2012, but man, times have changed: We had a multi-course meal delivered for a special occasion, and it was awful. Just awful. Everything was bad: mushy, poorly flavored, or both. Every dish was poorly flavored, and dishes meant to be crisp were mushy. Three of us love hot-and-sour soup, but not one of us ate a second spoonful. It was just that bad. Also, the amount of soup for the price was ridiculously small. Good thing we didn't like it, I guess. A restaurant can be given a pass for one or two bad dishes, but every one of the many dishes we ordered was terrible. The bill was extremely high, but can you say a meal is "overpriced" when you don't want to eat anything? I guess any price would be too high. I take no pleasure in honestly reporting how bad the food was at a place we used to visit semi-regularly. But Yelp! is about advising one another, right? read more

Simple question to the owner/management: would you feed the food you serve your customers to the enlightened vegetarian masters that you market on your front window? Food is microwaved, food was not fresh, our spring rolled smelled like cigarettes (cook probably smokes cigarettes), and there was a hair in our dish. Go back to the fundamentals, reduce menu, everything fresh, absolutely no microwaved food, or else your establishment won't survive. Pictures of vegan celebrities and historical figures on the walls... very inspiring . Took my vegan friend who was visiting here and the food was so good! We got the lemongrass soy protein, braised eggplant, and taro sticks. The taro sticks were so unique with a very light and crispy shell that you wrap in lettuce and dip, so good! N8: Crispy Chow Fun, fantastic and one of my favorite dishes. Miss my vegan noodle dishes. Good crisp on the noodles. Shrimp good presentation, okay texture, not much flavor. Wish sauce had a thicker consistency, was very watery Thai iced tea, super sweet!! I'm usually running errands in the neighborhood so I order to go. Favorites: CHAMPION BURGER - house mix soy burger w/perfect fries SPICY ORGANIC TOFU - wok fried with onions, peppers, spicy seasonings GURU'S CURRY - a mild yellow curry with mix of varieties of tofu & veggies CHOW FUN W/SOY JERKY - wok fried fun noodles, soy jerky, bean sprouts and veggies PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE - smooth, moist and not overly sweet. Loving Hut is a popular vegan pan-Asian chain with locations around the west coast. This spot is a full service restaurant with an excellent menu for vegans and those wanting to try some tasty food. I ordered their Taro Rolls, Chow Fun, and Mushroom Veg medley along with a small side of brown rice. They were able to prepare everything quickly and the food lasted well in its takeout containers. I was a fan of the chow fun and the taro rolls, which were crispy and close to perfection. Something I still struggle with Loving Hut though are the prices. They still feel quite steep for what you get, but I think SF pricing just continues to break my little heart. Either way, I'm glad Loving Hut is around and available for us to enjoy. read more

Google Maps tells me it had been 9 years since my last visit to Loving Hut. Now that there's only the one San Francisco location in the Inner Sunset, I'm not at all surprised. Thankfully, it was always the better spot with a more extensive menu, including all the pan-Asian hits and some unique Western fare too. Though it's hard to resist hot and sour soup, I took a small gamble on the wonton noodle soup, which paid off big time. Plump, tender dumplings swimming in a light broth with plenty of crisp green veggies, floating on top of thin wheat noodles? Yes please, I could happily eat this everyday. The "ham" slices are a really fun addition, adding a touch of five-spice and sweetness to the mix, along with that all-important plant protein, of course. Pro tip: This is the same price as the plain wonton soup, sans noodles, get a better bang for your buck with the full works. The Loving Hut at the Westfield Mall was a staple of my diet ten years ago, long before I became vegan. The restaurant at the mall closed, but I'm very happy this Loving Hut in the Sunset is still open. The dishes are slightly different but equally delicious! I ordered takeout through Yelp/grubhub today. The bun hue spicy noodle soup is SO flavorful that it's hard to believe it's vegan. I really liked the mango smoothie too. I look forward to eating here again soon. read more

I dont know what it is with this location but the food here was horrible. I ordered 3 dishes and not one came out good. They must have a bad chef here. Ive gone to the milpitas location plenty of times with zero issues. This location is horrible. Definitely would rather make the long drive than come back here read more

I mean I had to travel to the Bay Area for work but I only went without a fight with the expectation that I'd be spending some time in the city and having lunch at the best Loving Hut location! We went to Lovinghut during a rainy day and they hit the spot! I got the chow fun and it was so much better than I expected. Perfectly done and the beef alternative was just as good as regular beef. When we asked if we could take a couple sauce packets (soy, hoisin, sriracha) in the counter for our 2 rice dishes, 2 entrees, and 1 soup, the cashier gave us a side-eye like we were doing something wrong. I had been to the Loving Hut in downtown SF and even one in Tampa, FL yet was a first going to the one here. It was date night so my girlfriend and I decided to go for all vegan, Asian goodness of Loving Hut. We ordered family style including: Soba Noodles adding tofu Chinese Broccoli that came with a soy protein that I liked yet my girlfriend didn't care for the soy protein although she felt the Chinese Broccoli was seasoned just fine and an order of organic brown rice Everything was really good especially the noodle dish really shined bright. I think if we came back we might order two different noodle dishes for the one my girlfriend requested shined bright packed with flavor and adding tofu was a wise decision for a bit more protein along with nice texture. We were going to go for some vegan ice cream for desert aka vanilla and cherry ice cream yet all they had was strawberry ice cream as the others were sold out. The staff here was very friendly and a big thank you to the Foghorn bar next door letting us enjoy our meal on their patio after we purchased a small bottle of wine from them. The Loving Hut (chain?) (franchise?) is a generally reliable place for solid vegan food. The menu in San Francisco is very similar to the San Jose restaurant, but the food just wasnt just wasn't as good. The storefront (look for the bright yellow exterior) was cheery enough, but the inside smelled vaguely antiseptic. Ordered the Ocean basket appetizer. The fried yuba was good, but the mushrooms were well past their prime, and even the crispy breading couldn't conceal that. The spicy noodle soup was good, not great. The eggplant dish, in a heavily cornstarch based sweet and sour sauce, didn't work. Over all, an underwhelming experience. Maybe an off day? read more

This Loving Hut is fantastic! I love that each location is different. The veggies here are super fresh, the vegan meats are flavorful and really unique to this spot. The menu is so huge it's almost impossible to make a decision - but we were aiming for a light lunch and opted for the golden spring rolls, Chinese broccoli delight, and orange sesame bites with white rice. I highly recommend all but will say with absolute certainty that we'd try something different next time just because there's so many interesting sounding dishes. I'm especially coming back to try their desserts. The woman who took our order was so kind and fun to talk to, adding to our positive experience. I was really looking forward to trying Loving Hut in San Francisco, but unfortunately, it was a letdown. The food was disappointing--everything seemed like it was frozen, old, or dry. It just didn't have the fresh, vibrant flavors I expected from a vegan restaurant. On top of that, the prices were way too high for the quality of the food. I left feeling unsatisfied and like I didn't get my money's worth. I wouldn't recommend it if you're looking for a good vegan meal in the city. The little old ladies working in the restaurant were very nice and they appeared to have regulars in the neighborhood but they are pretty inefficient - they were doing everything super slowly and it was honestly a pain watching them count out our change at the register. Each time I saw them bringing food and drinks to the table it felt like I was watching my grandmother wobble over slowly and fighting for her life to keep the tray steady. I do sympathize with them and appreciate their effort even at their age but if you're in a rush, it's probably not the place to go. read more

We went as a large group. Ordered over 10 different item its that included starters, soups, rice amd other entre's. The food was so tasty. It was made with care. It arrived on in a reasonable time given the number of people in the restaurant. The food was prepared with attention and care. The spices were well balanced. Not too much oil in the fried rice. Now, for the food: - I've tried Loving Hut prior to this last check-in and got a Pad See Ew. It was vegan and gluten-free, and I was pleasantly surprised to see "shrimp" in it! Now, it didn't taste like shrimp but reminded me more of fish cake, but I liked it! - Crispy Mushroom with Basil: 4/5! I thought it was a solid fried dish. Not too oily or dense. It felt very crisp, and the fried basil added the perfect seasoning. - Crispy Chow Fun: 5/5! Now... I ordered this not really know what crispy chow fun meant. I envisioned more of a pan-fried Hong Kong style noodle dish. Crispy chow fun was pretty much chow fun noodles cut up into tinier, bite-size pieces and fried. It was SO good! I was excited to try loving hut, but their Singapore noodles were a huge disappointment along with some other dishes. When we brought the noodles home, they were clumped together and hard (uncooked), almost in edible. I called to let them know, and their response was simply " sometimes that happens when you take dishes home" with no offer to remake the dish or make it right. In terms of food, all I can remember is the mapu tofu which had an insane amount of numbing spice. My and my friend can handle a lot of spice (and we really enjoy eating spicy food) but this was inedible to the point that we had to throw it (I almost never throw food). One of my favorite places to get take out, especially when I can't decide what I want to eat! I've only gotten take out and delivery but every time, the food is freshly made and steaming hot. I am pleasantly surprised how delicious and flavorful it is since it's fully vegan. This time I got the Pineapple Fried Rice - the pineapple gives the perfect sweetness to the savory fried rice, and I would say the portions are pretty big. I always have leftovers for the next day! Would be 5 stars for the Phó but they don't pack you sauces to go and there is only take out option for the time being. (Idk when that will change) The Phó: the broth was delicious, maybe just needs a tad more protein, and would love to try it with some Sriracha and hoisin sauce. Definitely would eat again. read more
