Baskets are arranged according to how many/what type of chicken you'd like. The burgers are also very tasty and have that classic, old tymey charm (think, dare I say, "Steak n' Shake"). That staff here are always cheery and friendly despite the fact that the place is always bustling. Bustling with all types: families with kids, tourists, old Alaskan Sourdoughs, businessmen in suits, military lads in uniform, etc. Definitely worth checking out! Ended up getting the pop all dark meat and a bacon Swiss burger. Also the fresh blackberry limeade is the best thing I got from here! It was so refreshing and it also has the best Ice you can get! I came down here for lunch with a friend earlier today. Lucky Wishbone is one of the original downtown businesses that have been around since 1955. They are located on the corner of E. 5th Ave. and Karluk not far from the Alaska Sales and Service dealership. Not exactly in the best part of the downtown area, but that hasn't stopped longtime customers from flocking to the place for lunch or dinner. The place was moderately packed when we arrived. The seating area is reminiscent of an old-fashioned diner with a warm atmosphere and counters for solo diners on one side and comfortable booths on the other. Pop culture memorabilia from decades past as well as pictures of friends and loved ones dating back to WWII adorn the walls all around. The waitresses here are among some of the friendliest I've met and greet the regulars like old friends. Our server quickly seated us to a booth and gave us a couple of minutes to peruse the menu while serving us some freshly-brewed ice tea. I already knew what I wanted so I waited until my friend was ready to order. I went with the three-piece Fried Chicken Platter with a breast, leg, and thigh, a side of fries, and a fresh-baked corn muffin. My friend ordered the same except she requested a leg, thigh, and wing with a side of coleslaw. We also decided to go with a basket of Onion Rings based on the positive reviews I've read from others. Our orders only took about ten minutes to arrive at our table, pretty good considering how many people were there for the lunch rush. The pan-fried chicken was phenomenal, with the meat juicy and cooked perfectly with a crispy texture on the skin. The shoestring fries were also crispy and complemented the chicken well with some honey on the top. My friend loved her coleslaw which was made with a pineapple sauce that is a popular side item with the customers. The Onion Rings were exactly what the other Yelpers have described. They were delicious with a crispy batter that did not crumble when dipping into ketchup. This was a problem with a lot of other restaurants in town that made their onion rings from scratch, but these held up well. In addition to the pan-fried chicken, they also have burgers, salads, and sandwiches that are worth trying out in future visits. On the way out the door, I decided to get a Nutella Milkshake to-go, another item recommended by other reviewers. The milkshake was thick and delicious with plenty of vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, and a generous amount of Nutella mixed in. They are done the old-school hand-spun way which is something that you don't see anymore in the newer restaurants today. They still have the old-fashioned drive-thru that has been around since day one for to-go orders. There is also a section by the register up front that sells T-Shirts, Sweatshirts, and Tie Dye Shirts with the restaurant's logo on them. In addition, lunch specials are available for a cup of soup and a sandwich that changes daily. The food and the friendly service here is a clear reason of why they have been in business for 62 years and are still going strong today. This place is just okay in my book. It is just a local old fashioned restaurant that has been here forever. I have been here twice, and while i haven't been disappointed, I haven't really been uber impressed. There shakes are okay, nothing special besides I do have to say they have the widest selection I have ever seen! I myself have had the oreo shake twice :) Lots of oreos in that shake, nothing special about the ice cream they use though. I recently tried the fried chicken that everyone raves about. While it looks absolutely delicious upon receiving and you can smell the aroma outside and more inside the restaurant that makes you want to only have that chicken, i have to say it is just mediocre chicken. The batter on the chicken is definitely home made and is good, but really is lacking flavor. The chicken itself is good but a little on the dry side. If you can ever find a place that "steams" there chicken you should really try it out, its amazing! Onion rings are definite must, they were my favorite. The french fries are nothing to write home about and are on the bottom of my list for fries I have ever had. It's worth stopping I suppose just for the atmosphere, i myself if craving a burger may come here and try one as they say its 100% lean burger which sounds yummy. read more

The Lucky Wishbone USE to have the Beat Burgers, French Fries, and chicken, but their food and service is going down hill fast. I ordered a cheese burger, asked for the small cheese burger with No Onions, lettuce, pickle and Tomato. I received a tuff piece of meat with cheese only. No need to complain the last time I complained to their cheap way they sent out my drinks, by cutting the drink holder in half the milkshake spilt all over the inside of my car. It is a place we always take visitors or newcomers as it is one of the oldest restaurants in town. No other chicken place that attempts to enter the market can compare. It is a Mom and Pop shop, through and through complete with the best malts and shakes in town. I first went to the Lucky Wishbone when it was no more than two years old--in fact, that may very well be our 1962 Nova wagon on the right in the old photograph of the place when it was a quarter of its present size. To me, going there today is a trip back in time. Little has changed. The menu is bigger, but the basics remain, and are as good as I've always remembered them. Just as it was a treat in 1957, and 1967, and 1977, and every year since then, it's still a minor treat I indulge in about once a month--much more often when I worked downtown. And every visit has been, uniformly, completely satisfying for those that don't expect fast food at fast food prices. No, the chicken isn't 'tasteless;' It's just not fried and spiced to death. Nobody else has 'lizards and gizzards,' either. No, the burgers aren't 'bland;' They're steamed properly instead of, once again, fried and spiced to death. The fries are the best I know. No, 'everything' isn't hideously expensive, it's priced appropriately when inflation is taken into account. Although the original owners have passed, those who have carried on are keeping their spirit alive. The place is what it IS: A time capsule of 1950s Anchorage brought into the present day. They have milkshakes and malts, and some of the best desserts (try the strawberry shortcake). My husband heard from a few people at work that this is where to go for good down home fried chicken. We were all excited to try it. Upon arrival we weren't greeted, but stared at by three different staff people. We walked over to the wait to be seated sign and after a minute or two a young girl carrying water came and asked are you gonna sit? We were seated and a waitress came over to take our order. She seemed like she was in a rush. We stated we had never been there before and needed a few minutes to look over the menu. She came back every 2-3 minutes to check if we were ready like 4 times until my husband and I gave up and ordered the combo plates. I also ordered a side of chili. The food came. The fries were cold. The chili was cold. The chicken however was hot and fresh so that was good. I couldn't understand why this super expensive chicken ($12 for 3 pieces and fries) was so flavorless. Like it literally was fried after it was dipped in flour. Just flour. And maybe pepper. Not to mention the three piece comes with a back. A chicken back!! There's like no meat on that! It was extremely frustrating. I think the only reading they got 3 stars from me is because the service wasn't good, but it wasn't terrible. The food wasn't good by any means, but it wasn't terrible. We've been wanting to come here since we moved to Alaska back in September, and it did not disappoint! Not to mention, we came on Mother's Day and it wasn't jam-packed. We each got the POP chicken basket that comes with 5 pieces of chicken, a corn muffin, and your choice of fries or coleslaw. We also got milkshakes, and the added malt was awesome. The price was very reasonable ($13.45 for the basket, $4.95 for the small milkshake), the atmosphere was laid back and had a diner feel, and the food was DELICIOUS! It is the little details that make for a great meal experience that are missing in the Lucky Wishbone restaurant of late. Gone, it seems, are the paper bags used to house French fries, you know, the ones long enough to be folded to keep the fries warm on the ride home. My 'regular' order includes a higher-priced "Halibut" fish sandwich and half order of fries. Both missed the high quality mark: I question the receipt of Halibut (was probably cod or pollock) it was overcooked and tough; the fries suffered being open air in the to-go bag. I don't eat from a fast food diner often, but Lucky Wishbone had been a vestige from youth. I don't plan to return. read more
