I can't believe it took me so long to check out Lula Cafe. A friend and I went for a midweek brunch and enjoyed sitting on the patio. While I initially planned on trying the breakfast burrito, the waiter recommended the Tineka sandwich. Consider me impressed! The sandwich was huge and so unique. I will go out of my way to return and try it again. We were also given some carrot cake and holy cow! It was so fresh and moist. I'm still dreaming of it. I made it to Lulas in Logan Square twice. Once for breakfast during the week and then for dinner on a Saturday evening. This is a cozy homely restaurant with an lively outdoor seating section. Service was great for breakfast, but could have been more attentive for dinner. I had polenta for the 1st time with field greens and roasted corn for breakfast. The polenta was creamy and smooth unlike grits. The vegetables tasted very fresh and felt farm to table. For dinner I had mafaldine with sungold tomatoes. The naturally sweet tomates brightened the dish along with fresh basil and parmesan. I tasted the wheatberry and lentil risotto and thought it was savory, dark, and firm for a risotto. I thought all three entrees were unique and flavorful in their own way. I ordered desert to go both times. The pistachio cookie was simular to a sugar cookie infused with a salted pistachio flavor. It wasn't my favorite because I'm not a fan of salty sweet food. The fruit danish was delicious and came with a marvelous raspberry sauce. The carrot cake was moist a delicious the 1st time, but not so great the 2nd time and it had the same raspberry sauce in it which was weird. So desserts can be hit or miss. SERIOUSLY, what is in those chickpea frites?! They're so tasty and addicting!! They're perfectly crispy and salty! We almost ordered another portion but decided we should actually wait until the rest of our meal came out lol. And I'm glad we did bc both the pastas were phenomenal! The spaghetti is such a simple sounding dish but they make it 1000% tastier. Who doesn't like pancetta with some cheese?! We weren't really fans of the chilled mussels but that's just bc we think mussels are better warm. Got lucky with a table right by the window to feel the warm November sun while sipping on iced tea and starting the meal with a flaky melt-in-my-mouth danish (I think I could eat one every day and not get tired of it). This place has been on my foodie bucket list for years now and excited to report I finally got to try it! Be prepared for a long wait for brunch, but it is so worth it. We started out with the backed feta and it was HEAVENLY! The bread was warm and fluffy and cooked in oil so it was incredibly flavorful. The feta was also delicious and herby and the cucumbers/onions helped break up the rich flavor. I didn't really taste the jalapeños in it, but honestly it wasn't missing. We also got the chocolate maritozzi which was a brioche with hazelnut and it was delicious! The hazelnut was almost buttery it was so good. Finally, I had the breakfast burrito and the eggs were a soft scramble (my favorite) and so fluffy! I wish the salsa was a little spicier but they do provide hot sauce! I've been to Lula Cafe for dinner before and loved it, but experienced their brunch for the first time recently. Their brunch lived up to my past experience of Lula (although if I had to pick between only experiencing Lula dinner vs. brunch, I would pick dinner although both are good). I love a well-executed farm to table place and Lula is definitely that - there really is a reason it's stayed on many best of lists and is a Chicago favorite even after all this time. The staff has also always been really nice. We got a beet crepe type thing, spaetzle item, a breakfast sandwich with focaccia, and a chocolate babka with marigold. I really recommend everything except the pastry, which I think both me and my companion found underwhelming. I personally think there are much better pastries to be had elsewhere. But the other brunch items were so yummy - my companion really loved the breakfast sandwich and I loved the spaetzle but was so happy with everything we got. Definitely a great meal. read more

I flew into O'Hare this morning and jumped on the Blue Line to Logan Square and here I am at Lula Cafe. Having attended the James Beard Awards this year, I was extra excited to dine at Chicago's only winner: the James Beard Award for Hospitality. I remember Chef Jason Hammel, surrounded by his team, speaking about how hospitality is love with conditions. When I arrived, there were lots of diners milling around the front of the restaurant, but with a party of one, I immediately snagged a seat a the bar. For a superb restaurant with such an amazing reputation and following, I was surprised it does a breakfast/lunch serving, followed by dinner. I enjoyed chatting with Alex at the bar. He provided great service. He was so happy that I came in specifically because of their Beard win. Based on Yelp reviews, I knew I had to order the super popular French Toast and Classic Lula Breakfast Burrito. Both weee exquisite: super tasty, beautiful presentation and large portions. The ambiance is at best a salvage. The food is so eclectic that the flavors are strange. Definitely overpriced. Was there approximately three weeks past. Ordered the Pasta 'YiaYia, disgusting, as a Sicilian do like olive oil. This is one of those places that has been around for 25 years. I always said I would go, but alas, we moved out of state. When I knew we would visit Chicago again, I had an idea of where I wanted to go. Then they won a James Beard Award for Hospitality, and I figured I'd try to make a reservation. I tried online to make one, but it looked like a no-go. I thought, I'm just going to call in--this was worth it--and I got a reservation. They had some nice outdoor seating, and the inside was light and bright. There was a large bar, and I believe around the corner, there was more seating or a private dining room (a small wedding party came in while we were there). We came in and were seated promptly. From what I can ascertain, you need a reservation for dinner. Brunch, however, is first-come, first-served; they take no reservations for that. We sat in a little nook area and then started to look at the menus (both for food and a separate one for wine/cocktails/beer, etc.). I got a cocktail--unfortunately, I don't remember the name of it, but it hit the spot on that hot July day. We then got an appetizer of the Baked French Feta with Toasted Bread to slather it on. The Feta was sitting in the most beautiful green olive oil I have ever seen. It was tasty as well, perfect for sopping up with the toasted bread. The Feta was flavorful without being overly salty, as it sometimes can be. It also came with both green and black olives. This iconic dish has been on the menu for a while, and I completely understand why. It was delicious, and smearing that Feta on the toasted bread was divine. My husband ordered the Roast Chicken with Potato and Butter Greens, Panzanella, and Anchovy Aioli. I know you might be thinking, roast chicken? Yes, and it's another iconic dish that has been around for a long time. I get it--I tried a bit of it, and the chicken was succulent and the flavors were just right. The Brie and Roasted Chicken are Café Classics from when the restaurant opened in 1999. I got the Branzino with Grilled Cabbage, Summer Onions, Sungold Tomato, and Fennel Soubise. I really liked this dish. The fish was perfectly cooked and properly seasoned. I liked the idea of the grilled cabbage, though I wished it had more Sungold tomatoes, to be frank. We decided to share a dessert, which I highly recommend doing as well. We got the Pecorino Cake with Sour Cherry, Olive Oil Ice Cream, Sicilian Pistachio, and Candied Castelvetranos. I also got a dessert wine that perfectly paired with it, as suggested on the menu under the dessert description. This dessert was a complete surprise, also featuring shards of Parmesan. It hit the savory and sweet notes without being overwhelming--a lovely way to end the meal. The service was lovely and helpful. All the staff were on point, from when we checked in to when we ordered, with different people dropping off different dishes. I completely understand why they won that award. As an FYI, they automatically add a 20% gratuity to your bill. It's all online or on the menu, and they explain why. Parking can be a bit tricky as it's street-only and yes, you have to pay for street parking--ah, Chicago. All in all, it was very much worth the visit. If you are able, please go. read more

Knowing Lula Cafe is busy on weekends I stopped here on a Thursday for brunch and was pleasantly surprised to be seated right away in a booth inside. My wife and I thought we'd need one dish for each so we ordered the smoked lake trout scramble and breakfast burrito with a side of sausage patties. I had finished a 4 mile run a couple hours before so thought I could eat. I tell you what, we split the breakfast burrito and wow. The burrito was just so filling and good, we ended up taking the scramble home after just a couple bites. The lake trout scramble was pretty good, just keep in mind if you don't like dill, you won't think it's dill-icous The sausage patties were real solid, nothing to complain about. Honestly, you could come here and just split a dish and be pretty content. Feel like the prices are big value. Gratuity is already included and usually I don't like this if service is non-existent or bad, but service is actually really great so I don't mind that it's a flat added fee here. A Chicago classic for a reason. Expect long waits for brunch, especially on the weekends, but the food is consistent and good. Lula focuses on seasonal, farm-to-table ingredients, so expect the menu to change around but feature in-season flavors! For brunch, my favorites (that are always on the menu) are the breakfast burrito and the French omelette. I was also pleasantly surprised by the tofu scramble--something I would not normally go for, but the tofu pieces were big and well-seasoned. Found this very popular spot for brunch while browsing on Yelp! I was glad I was able to try something savory plus something sweet here! I would def recommend the biscuits and gravy ($22) but I do wish the portion sizes of their dishes were slightly bigger considering their prices. I was sad seeing how much potatoes I got since it was $6. I did enjoy the sourdough French toast and while the strawberry rhubarb jam was yummy, I think the dish could've benefitted from having more fresh strawberries on it! Service was quick and attentive. Lula Cafe's reputation speaks for itself, so I was excited to try it on my latest visit to Chicago. We got there about 15 minutes before it opened and there was already a line. Thankfully, the restaurant is bigger than it looks, and we had no trouble getting in. Service was great all around, despite how busy they were. The tofu and vegetable scramble was much more leafy than I expected, so be warned! The sesame and miso sauce was great, and I only wished I had a little more tofu to enjoy it with. The pasta yiayia was a plate of buttery and garlicky goodness, with a fun pasta shape to boot. It was a little too cinnamon forward for me, but I respect the vision. What a delicious brunch spot! The cafe is very cute and has a lot of outdoor seating in the summer. I've been here twice now: once with a friend who is vegan. They helped mark up a menu for us to show us exactly what was vegan friendly or what things could be made vegan friendly. The vegan stuff we shared was so delicious. Our favorite was the beet bruschetta and focaccia. The second time was today on leap day. We ordered the: tofu scramble, cannoli French toast, and the "TINEKA". The tofu scramble does not have egg in it (just a heads up), the cannoli French toast was perfectly not too sweet. The berries on top of the toast were so fresh and the ingredients were in perfect harmony. The sandwich was hands down our favorite and I would come back for it! The ingredients were so fresh and the bread crispy and soft all at the same time. I'm not a big of tomatoes and I devoured the tomato in the sandwich. Lula Cafe has been on my bucket list for awhile before I was finally able to try it out for the first time a month ago. This past week was my second time back and was every bit as good as the first time.  Over the course of those two meals, I was able to try their smoked lake trout scramble, chickpea and fennel tagine, the "Royale", carrot cake, and the pineapple basil sorbet. Everything was delicious, but the entrees especially had layers of flavor complexity to them that I did not expect. While I don't consider myself a foodie, I could appreciate the depth to which they were able to elevate something as seemingly simple as a scramble. Later, my wife was browsing Lula's cookbook and basically confirmed how much work and nuance goes into the food that they make. For us, it completely justifies their price point, which is still fairly standard Chicago food fare (but verifiably delicious!).  I also had the opportunity to try two of their spirit-free drinks: Sunny Sipper for a Shady Day and Laura Palmer. I was actually a bit sad to see that they had removed the Laura Palmer from the drink list during my second visit and thus had opted for the Sunny Sipper. Both were good but the Laura Palmer felt more unique and left a stronger impression on me. read more

They have some creative dishes on their menu which was why I was particularly excited to come here. The food wasn't exceptional which was a let down. I'd be curious to try some other dishes to see if I just didn't pick items that were amenable to my tastes. Still, kudos to them for the creativity they're trying on their menu. I also wish they would consider removing the 20% automatic gratuity on checks. I am always a generous tipper when I receive good or even average service but I don't feel it should be necessary to have a specific percentage included automatically as it may remove the incentive for good service. My server seemed distracted throughout my meal and was not helpful in answering some questions about the menu. While I would have still left a tip, being forced to leave 20% of my bill for subpar service was also not an incentive for me to come back, especially when I was inclined to do so to give them another chance. read more

Loved this place so much! Came on a Saturday around 10 and waited maybe 15 minutes to get seated - you can wait inside the restaurant or there are small stores around to visit while you wait. The inside itself is so cute, very rustic and exposed brick type vibe. The service was very fast and kind - very attentive. They have a regular menu and a special menu that changes every day. Wide variety of options for everyone to choose from with many vegetarian and vegan options too. I got the French Omelette and it was so soft and just melted on your tongue. I'm so happy I found Lula's!!!! Such an amazing gem right in Logan Square. From the look of the restaurant on Google, I assumed it would be a small intimate cafe, but I was wrong. The restaurant inside is huge, with two large dining rooms on either side of the kitchen. They have a regular menu that features their popular breakfast and lunch items, and then a small special menu that changes frequently. If you're visiting for breakfast or lunch, know that they do NOT take reservations. I went around 1:30pm on a Sunday and was seated almost immediately. Wow this place is so amazing. A friend recommended as it was her fav spot back when she lived in the city. As local as possible organic produce, rotating seasonal menu, unique but delicious menu items, cute and quant. How could a person go wrong. And we are usually disappointed in our restaurant experiences. :) We ordered the citrus salad, focaccia, arancini, yia yia pasta, passion fruit sorbet, chocolate gelato with red wine reduction, and carrot cake. We made reservations for dinner on a Monday night, and I'm so glad we did because this place was popping! My favorite dishes of our meal were the roast chicken and the blue fish tuna carpaccio. We started with the carpaccio which came along with a side of toasted bread. This went well together. Then we ordered the bass, spaghetti, pasta yia yia and roast chicken. The roast chicken was not dry at all, seasoning was absolutely delicious. However, the pasta & spaghetti weren't that special to me, I wasn't a huge fan of the brown butter. Bass was ok. It's shard to say this but Lula's Cafe might be a little bit too overhyped. Pros: - The carrot cake saved them! It was unbelievable. I didn't get to try the other desserts but if this is how they make them they really should just become a pastry shop. Cons: - My party had to wait an hour and 45mins to be seated. Luckily there was a farmers market outside to distract us but we could've seen a movie while we waited. - The restaurant sitting is packed to the gills. They found a way to make sure they use every spot available to the point you feel like it would've been better to just do community style tables with how close everyone is to you. - I ordered the breakfast burrito and it was packed full of stuff but everything lacked flavor. I probably finished a quarter of the burrito before taking the rest to go. I ended up only being able to finish another quarter as leftovers and tried to repurpose the salvageable ingredients to not waste food. - The Caesar salad tastes like they spilled dill pickle juice on it. We went to Lula cafe during restaurant week. The only regret is that we didn't try it sooner. The food was truly delicious. A few not so good notes: The water in the bathroom is glacier cold. They don't seem to have dress codes for the staff. It was pretty distasteful and distracting. We both agreed we wouldn't bring a date, or parents, or kids, or church people there. I guess go with friends? The manager was catching up with the table next to us during our entire dessert course. We couldn't see it because she was blocking the light, she almost lit her puffy coat on fire from our candle, and I don't even remember what it tasted like because her butt was in our face for like 15 minutes. My partner addressed her, she didn't get it the hint. It's a mixed review. The food is great. The night club attire during a candlelit dinner and manager experience, not so good. We would definitely come back for the food frequently.
