The girl at the counter ignored me for a bit and didn't even say anything like what can I get for you. I think her standing by the register not even making eye contact was my sign to order. I didn't know if she was doing something so I waited....... Then looked up at my like, are you going to order?... definitely denying the tip option when I paid with card and the other guy at the counter walked up and asked her in Spanish "no tip" (I understood what you said my guy) The music is probably a little loud, but just depends on what kind of night you're wanting to have I guess. Always delicious I've been to lupes many times and have always enjoyed it. The stoner fries are a particular favorite. , I prefer eating in La Barra as their tamarindo margaritas are so good. Tacos are full of meat and flavor, and the salsas at the bar are very good. Guacamole comes in a large size and my friend ordered the On Dana point burrito, which is a California burrito WRAPPED IN A QUESDILLA. it looked incredible (cross section photo attached). THE FOODS | Mexican cuisine. Burritos, tacos, quesadillas, bowls, ceviche, tostadas, etc. Of course, I narrowed in on a breakfast burrito... - Dolphins | Bacon, sausage slices, hash browns, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, and sour cream. Honestly, the sour cream really pulls this burrito together, lending to its rich creaminess and added tang. Good portions of bacon and sausage. The only thing I didn't love was the tortilla itself had a more crunchy/flakey texture and kept crumbling with each bite. Give me a soft, fluffy tortilla and I swear, this would've been a fantastic burrito. THE DRINKS | Craft cocktails (margaritas, michelada, mule, etc.), draft beers, bottled beverages, and orange juice. I went for... - Orange Juice | Gloriously pulpy and freshly squeezed. The cup sat in a container of ice by the cash register to ensure it was cold; seems insignificant, but I've had warm orange juice before and ew. No thank you. Two of three orders were okay. The third was abominable. I ordered a shrimp cocktail. I didn't get a shrimp cocktail but a mixed cocktail served in a ridiculously tall glass that the provided a long handled spoon could not reach beyond the halfway level of the glass. That was problem #1. Problem #2 was that the shrimp were not the only seafood in the mix. There were at least an equal amount of pulpo. Pulpo is octopus to which I don't object but I don't want octopus in my shrimp cocktail. Problem #3 was although the apparent manager said that he would replace the mixed seafood cocktail and although his offer was refused by me, clearly stating that I did not want the order replaced so late in the meal, he left a replacement on the table along with the check. I paid the check without scrutinizing it as I trusted the manager to have been fair. Not so. Problem#4 was that I had paid for the meal and left a 20% gratuity. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone nor will I return. I am so disappointed. Furthermore, the shrimp in the ceviche had clearly been cooked with heat prior to going into the ceviche mixture to be again cooked by the marinade lending a rather tough, pulpy texture and totally missing the crispness and flavor of good ceviche. Lupe's is one of our favorite spots! They have so many options and everything we've tried has been so good. Some of our favorite things on the menu have been the surf and turf bowl, surf and turf burrito, and Oceanside taco. I love that they include plenty of shrimp in their bowls and burritos. Their guacamole and salsas are delicious and they have many salsas to choose from. I also love their breakfast menu. My wife and I decided to stop here for tacos on a Taco Tuesday. We both had beer-battered fish and mushroom shrimp tacos and I had a carnitas taco. They were delicious. Fresh fish in the fish tacos; fresh shrimp and mushrooms in the mushroom shrimp tacos; and, wonderfully marinated pork in the carnitas tacos. The tacos were a good size and made a great meal. On Taco Tuesday, all the regular tacos are a dollar off. So they were good value too. The service was solid but basic: you order at the counter, get a number and someone serves the dish to you. The ambiance was straightforward: high tables to eat at (although the one we sat at wasn't all that clean); and a fountain area to self-serve yourself a soda or water. The stars at this restaurant are the tacos and I'll definitely come back for those. In particular, I'll try the specialty smoked tuna taco, which looks really good. read more

I love Lupe's; my family and I are from Encinitas, but we stop here whenever we pass by Dana Point because we love their burritos. Their prices are high, but I think it's worth it. If you're coming here for the first time, order a burrito. Our favorites are the Lupes in Cali and the Mar y Tierra. They're great about adhering to dietary restrictions; they have a setting in their system for "dairy-free." Order ahead of time online so that your order is ready when you show up. I used to really love this place because the tacos were definitely tasty but through the years I think with the opening of the restaurant... service and the food has gone down. This review is specifically for takeout. I ordered two tacos, octopus and smoked tuna, super easy you think Right and I understand there's other orders that come in But honestly it took over 45 minutes to get my order out and I think they actually screwed up on the order and it was overlooked. While I was waiting, I can tell the kitchen was frazzled and that there is some sort of organization issue. Clearly the restaurant orders Take precedence over the takeout. The staff that handles putting the orders together you can tell that it was so unorganized. I would say this was a one off, but honestly, this happens to me every time I go in there and place an order to go, so I really have to crave for this place AND JUST DEAL. You would think that they worked out all the kinks since the restaurant had open, but for some reason, it always has issues at least for the takeout portion. On top of that, it looks as though they just threw my taco in a box because it was just put together. On top of that my husband bit into the octopus taco and there was paper! We are a group of 5. Half of us had been here before and were introducing it to our friends. There are several booths open at Lupe's. Two girls told us to sit at La Barra by Lupe's instead but when we went in, there was no where to sit. The guys were nice and offered to help us but we just wanted to sit at a booth that was open anyways at Lupe's. We went back to Lupe's and the two girls walked away and started whispering as if they didn't want to serve us. The gentleman on the other side even had to tell them they can make it work since there wasn't space on the other side. But the girls just kept rolling their eyes. It made us feel so uncomfortable and unwanted. I am never coming back and never recommending this place. It's sad because it is a local restaurant. Don't waste your time here. read more

Really bummed out by my latest visit. It was my birthday and I had been dreaming of getting their octopus taco all day. I swung by an hour before closing and at the counter I placed a to-go order of an octpopus taco and a spicy shrimp taco. The spicy shrimp was ready right away and sitting on the shelf but it was close to 10 more minutes before the octopus one was prepared. When I got home the octopus taco seemed lacking of the octopus flavor and texture. I think they must have run out of octopus because when I looked inside there was WAY less than usual and they had made up for it by filling it out with sautéed mushrooms... I guess because they might be passably fleshy feeling? That sucked. Someone could have talked to me while I was in the restaurant and asked what I would like to do, but no, they tried to pull this. Lame. Needless to say mushrooms are NOT in the listed ingredients "Octopus, Onions, Cilantro, Pesto, Sriracha Aioli & Grilled Mozzarella Cheese". Normally I would give them a 4.5/5 but today it's a 2. Still love their food, but... guess it will be a while before I give them another chance. I do have high standards; Taco Nazo in Bellflower are the very best fish tacos, but Lupe's should think about taking their's off the menu. 3 street taco size fish tacos were $21. Added guacamole and got 3 thin sliced pieces of avocado to put 1 slice on each taco. The fish was thin, overcooked, dark brown, with terrible flavor. 1 tortilla was damaged/cut in the middle. And I didn't write a review the first time I guess it was just that uneventful. And last night we ordered couple things. I ordered beer bartered fish, steak burrito chips and guacamole. To be honest with you; it was just ok in my opinion. For $4 tacos, I definitely had better tacos! Portion is huge not going to lie, tortillas is probably the best thing in my plate. I mean my slaw was in huge chucks (hard to chew and eat) and my fish was a little over and dry. The whole thing needed a sauce. Like avocado crema or some spicy aioli to lift them up a little. Sauce on top of my food was bunch of salsa I put myself to help w the dryness So again; uneventful. Would I be back again? Maybe; I'll try different tacos. My food was delicious and cooked perfectly. I like that they have guasacaca sauce. I recommend getting extra of that! I also liked that they put a giant tortilla underneath the large pile of fries. There are limited options in such a small beach town, but Lupe's came up as one of the most highly rated restaurants in the area. I was a little skeptical of this place because it appeared to cater to Westerners & I thought it wouldn't be authentic. To my surprise it was actually really really good & the flavors were so on point! I came two days in a row because I couldn't stop thinking about those carnitas and spicy shrimp tacos LOL. Each taco comes with all the toppings & even guac at no extra cost! Same with the burrito, there was guac in it too. I'm so used to taquerias in SF charging me for toppings & guac, so this was such a nice little touch. My fav protein was the carnitas because it was so tender, perfectly marinated & not too salty with a nice pork taste while being slightly charred. I also loved the spicy shrimp because they were really generous with the amount in each taco & they were so plump & crunchy! I usually like al pastor as my protein of choice but I was greeted with a bright red meat that just didn't look natural & it tasted like pineapples (which I know is common with al pastor but I wasn't a fan because it was too sweet). You can also grab as much salsa & pickled onions on the side as you want! Those onions were so tangy and spicy & made every bite so much better. You can choose from mild, medium, or hot salsa - beware the hot is really hot! The medium was perfect for me, the mild was too salty. After craving tacos and being new to the area, we stumbled upon this place! Online ordering for take out was super easy. Upon arrival, the folks working were really nice and our food was ready at the promised time. As for the tacos themselves, they were solid! We sampled a variety. Octopus Taco - this was my favorite. It had a slight kick to it and was really really tasty. I wasn't sure at first about the battered onions on top but they really rounded out the flavor! Surf & Turf - really good. Classic steak and shrimp with pico, cabbage and avocado. Smoked Tuna - I really loved the smoky tuna flavor but I wasn't sure if it totally worked in the taco format. That said though, if you're a tuna fan you should definitely give it a try. Grilled Chicken - This was just average, but still not bad. I am disappointed to write this review. Lupe's used to be the best place for a burrito in South OC. I've eaten here since sometime in 2017. I have gone here less and less as the food has been declining in quality since about 2020. Tonight I stopped by to pick up a California burrito with Al pastor, and when I got home found it to be so bland and flavorless, I had to stop after eating half of it. Genuinely worst experience i've had in a while. we've been going here for years and have never been treated this way. got there before the dinner rush, literally first person there with a line of 10 behind us and all of them got their food before us. We waited 30 minutes and got told we were waiting for tacos to be ready. I watched one of the employees, a short girl in a hoodie with orange hair click our order off the screen and then the kind young man told her we were still waiting for food and she did nothing! Recently discovered this place and it was amazing! The California burrito is super good and popular, I've never had a burrito with fries inside. You also can't go wrong with the tacos. There's only a few tables so most people get to-go orders here. Decided to give them another try last night and still disappointed. The bean and cheese burrito hardly had any filling. I should have taken a pic because it was just layers of tortilla. The potato taco, can't even taste the potato. It's mostly zucchini. We added black beans in our quesadilla, when we got home there were no black beans. Don't order the veggie fries, pretty much the most unappetizing thing ever. I think the burritos (not the bean and cheese) are maybe the only thing good here. True Mexican!! I have enjoyed thoroughly the carefully prepared Mexican dishes here for 3 years! Why you should go. They have an assembly line of pros building your dish with great care and speed. Feel like knocking back a few breaks after a long day at work? Yes, right next door there is La Barra by Lupe's so you can get outstanding authentic mixed drinks and a wide variety of beers.
