Late post from Valentines day. We had lunch here and it was pretty good. My husband had the shrimp pasta and I had a beef sandwhich with fries. The sandwich was really really good! The fries, not so much. They looked and tasted like they were burnt and the portion was ridiculous for the price we paid. We left and my son was still hungry and asking to go to Burger King. He loves fries and there just wasn't enough for him, he's 3 so you can imagine how small the portion was. My husband said his pasta was bland. I tried it and thought it was really good. My drink was delicious and the service was good. I would try it out again before really being able to recommend to someone else. Overall, I wasn't impressed but wasn't disappointed either read more

I understand the food that is prepared may be inexpensive, but when you go that route your not suppose to have the food tasting like it came right out the dam box! I threw that whole plate away! It was tasteless and dry. We also bought two orders of the Ravioli lobster and shrimp dinner/side salads and two orders of the spaghetti and meatballs sauce with salads. The only thing good was the spaghetti and meat sauce for the kids and salads! Had dinner here for the first time. Had heard good things, however we must have gone on an off night. Ordered the ribeye and somehow it was the fattiest most grissely one I've ever had. We went to M & J Bistro for a night out and it was above our expectations. Those crispy shaved potatoes, we could have eaten a more than I want to admit - delicious! The bartender was on point with her drinks as well. I had a fifty-fifty bar cocktail that was dangerously good. The entree's were delicious as well, the salmon seared nicely and the eggplant Neapolitan had so much flavor. Great service from the owner and delicious food we will be back for soon. read more

Great experience. Coming back into the Central Valley of California on CA 120 our hunger hit us as we hit Tracy. Mostly we would stop for fast food or a quick sandwich, but my wife was looking at Yelp! and there was highly rated M&J. We came in for lunch and it was great. A bit off the interstate track and located in a strip mall you might have trouble zeroing in on it, but take your time and get there. It is rather small, but has the ambiance of a high end restaurant. Waiter has white shirt and tie, even. Menu is excellent. Main coursed include salad or soup. It is a combination of American, Greek and Italian meals. And there is a full bar. They offer just about anything you might want, category-wise, like steaks, pasta, chicken dishes salads, sandwiches/burgers, desserts...but each one has a "twist" to it. Something special that makes each item special. It is cozy so a great date dinner place and could be described in the evenings as romantic. As we frequently drive through Tracy when in California we will be certain to time our travels to eat at M&J's. read more

Ok so I too hate to give a bad review but I have to be honest as well. As we sat down to begin our dining experience...our server took my glass as he assumed I was under 21. Before beginning, they were out of my two desired entrees....the halibut and ribeye which limited my choices. We order a bottle of wine and received 2 glasses of wine. My friend ordered the teriyaki skirt steak which came out well done (she requested medium). Second steak was better but still cooked well. Chef tried to convince us the steak was marinated thus causing the "lack of pink" My burger which was a slider...was well done (I too asked for medium) It was flavorful but dry. Oddly my server proclaimed it to be the best burger he had ever had. Also, I requested the bacon swiss cheese augratin potatoes...I received fries and a salad. I regret having to write this review because I sooo wanted this to be a great dining experience. But is important to be honest with the hopes that the Owners/Management willl review the feedback and try to improve. But as most experienced diners know, the devil is in the details. If you are going to tout yourselves as a 'Taste of SF', than you must pay attention to the details...even if you are in Tracy..Here we go... Greeted well and sat promptly at our reserved table. Ordered a bottle of wine. Our server, Elijah, did not know how to properly serve a bottle of wine. I am not pretentious but was surprised when he uncorked the bottle and promptly poured my glass to the very top of the wine glass. The wine was fine but I was not able to sniff or taste the the wine to ensure it was not corked. The management should teach him how to properly serve wine is the message here. We started with empanadas. This was the best part of the evening. Unfortunately, Elijah took our appetizer away before we finished to give us our salads. The house salad is good. Another highlight of the evening. Unfortunately, before we finished our salads our entres arrived. I really wished the bistro understood the importants of timing for a good dining experience. For our entres we had the Teriyaki skirt steak and the rib eye. The skirt steak was flavorful but unfortunately was cooked well done, when my wife asked for medium. My rib eye was cooked at the proper temperature but was overly seasoned with an herb seasoning. Let the meat speak for itself with salt and pepper. The herb seasoning is wayyyy over-powering. After being rushed to our entre, then it took 20-30 minutes to bring us our check after we requested it. We had requested to take the remainder of our steaks home but that also didn't happen so they must have just thrown them out. So unfortunately, it was not the best experience at M&J Bistro. We will give M&J sometime before giving it another try. We will probably stick with our favorite bistro in Tracy, Magellan's. read more

When Jason first opened M&J's, I promised him I wouldn't Yelp his place. But what Jason didn't know was, I had my fingers crossed when I made that promise, so here's my review. I went in today to say hi to Jason and to have some lunch. After ragging on me for a few moments about my sporadic visits to see him, I told him about my low carb diet and asked what he could do for me as far as a meal goes. He suggested a lettuce wrapped blue cheese burger and as a side, sweet potato oven baked fries. None of this was from his menu. My burger was cooked to a perfect medium rare and my fries, although a bit dry (because they were oven baked) were crispy, well seasoned and gone in sixty seconds. This visit was probably my 6th or 7th to M&J's and each visit has ended with the same results. Jason has something special here at M&J's. Not only is Jason a gifted chef, he's personable as well. And M&J's has always been super clean each time I've visited. M&J's Bistro is just what Tracy needed and ordered. KUDOS Jason. You really came through for the folks of Tracy. read more

My mom and I went for lunch today, Saturday, May 1, 2010. We were the first customers getting there at 11:30 AM. My mother is a little 88 year old weighing under 100 pounds, so Jason let her order the Youth Burger. Which is not a smaller burger but a third pound served on a toasted French roll. The difference is that the Youth version comes with Shaved Potatoes and no salad whereas the Bistro Burger comes with a salad an French Fries. I had a bite, it was wonderful. I ordered the J's CREPE prosciutto, goat cheese, onions & tomatoes. It was very, very good. But it must have been a slow Saturday. Customers were not flocking through the door. The locals in Tracy really need to support this spot. It beats fighting the traffic into San Francisco to get good Crepes. I will have to try a dessert crepe the next time I go there. And I will return, for sure. The location is a bit hidden but it is in a small shopping center on the west side of Tracy Blvd. just north of Grantline Road. A fairly extensive menu and not prepared in advance so you must count on a leisurely meal. If you are in a hurry go to the Jack-In-The-Box. read more

This place is really trying so I give 3 stars, but they just aren't there yet. On a business trip, we were looking for a good local spot for dinner and drinks. We arrived around 7:30 p.m. on a Tuesday evening and we were the only table. Unfortunately, no alcohol is currently being served because they've recently moved locations so they are in the waiting period to serve alcohol... Not their fault at all. The menu has a wide selection of choices with a French influence. We started with the crispy potatoes for an app. They were delicious. Our group ordered the chicken sandwich: the bacon was cooked extra well done and didn't look appetizing but my co-worker enjoyed the sandwich and the side salad that came with it. Another co-worker ordered the lobster crepe. The serving size was a traditional serving size, not your typical American sized serving and my co-worker reported that is was good. I had the Basque caesar salad. It was not tossed in the dressing, rather it was served in the side... No problem. But there were way toooooo many capers, which were tiny so it was useless to try and pick them all out... It was basically ruined from them. Defiantly would not get again. Our server Brian was excellent! He was super helpful in describing the menu and sharing is personal favorites. Gave it a shot, but won't return unless I want the crispy potato app again. read more

I'll start w/ saying that I would give the food I personally ordered 4 stars. I had a glass of red wine (from Spain) which was very good, the house salad and the lamb chops. I was happy to find that dish to be one of their signature dishes and was recommended. For very good reason might I add. It's not something I've seen on any menus around the area and was VERY tasty. Pros - Tracy actually brought in a decent restaurant that's not a chain? Bravo! Staff is very friendly and the atmosphere and decor is nicely done. Cons - The tremendously long wait for each course of our meal definitely requires patience. For our table of four, we spent at least 2hrs at dinner. Comments from the others: My husband said his salmon lacked flavor so much that he had to add salt, which is a real rarity for him. Our friend ordered the ribeye and didn't care for it. His wife had the teriyaki dish and she enjoyed it. The two guys said they would not return. My friend and I would. So there you go. In the future, if I do return I hope the owner will figure out how to speed up the dining experience. read more

Fantastic food, perfect atmosphere, and even better service! If you are looking for a touch on class, in Tracy no less, this is the place to go. Moderate pricing for High End food. Make a reservation now. We didn't, but we're kindly squeezed in. We found M & J by accident (initially looking for Indian food) but we found ourselves drawn to the SF style decor. Upon entering, We met Jason, waiter, bartender, chef, AND proprietor! A real person with a real personality. Above all, he knows the restaurant business and the simple fact that his customers are what make it. The menu even forbids use of cell phones so that we can all remember our manners, look each other in the eye, and enjoy one another as it should be. Done so well, I felt the need to stand as my lady excused herself from the table. I ordered all the specials. Lobster corn chowder, rack of herb crusted lamb, and dessert viogniers with chocolate truffle sauce and strawberry lemon reduction! My wife had a lobster crepe, spring salad with walnut oil dressing, and a glass of local chard to sip it down with. All said and done, this experience was less than $100.00! Go for the food, go back for the experience. And ask Jason for the square tumbler. He'll know what you mean. read more

We were impressed with this place, and plan to return soon. Even if it weren't in Tracy, we'd still like it very much! For appetizers we had the clams, in a cioppino/bouillabaisse type broth. Also the thin thin potatoes with a creamy sauce. Even though it says bleu cheese, (which I detest) it was not too strong; we had on the side to be safe, but was good. The owners perhaps should qualify the flavor or say "mild" bleu cheese, as the chef told us later that people are apprehensive at first and sometimes order on the side. We'd have it on the side again, just because it was fun to dip it... On a very hot evening the refills of our soft drinks kept coming even though we didn't ask. That's a mark of thoughtful considerate service, and too often lacking in places that really should know better!.. The service was excellent, not too intrusive but very considerate and thoughtful. We had the pork and chicken as two entrees, each came with a gratineed potato in a bacon cheese sauce, and grilled asparagus. Both were well prepared and presented, and quite tasty. The pork portion was a little small, but the taste was great. We'll go back another time and will have the lamb when it's not so hot!4 outside! Inside though it was cool and restful; a clever design feature. No room for dessert either, though they looked intriguing. The chef came into the dining area several times and was friendly and interested in feedback. The place indeed had that neighborhood bistro atmosphere, with s casual but tasteful style. They also seem to have periodic music events, jazz related, which could be a fun enhancement. Absolutely, locals and beyond should help keep this spot going; it is a wonderful and needed alternative to chain restaurant blandness! read more

We went to M & J Bistro to celebrate our son & daughters birthdays a week ago Saturday night. What a great experience. We were greeted with a smile and seated promptly. Our waiter was attentive and helpful with menu selections. Then the food which was well prepared, and just plain delightful. The Teriyaki Signature Steak is well named, ribeye wonderful, as well as the salmon, and eggplant dish. Topped off by several of their tasty crepes. Thanks to the food and staff, we will be back. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. It was chilly during the first part of the dinner or the coveted 5th would have been earned. Thank You M &J Bistro! read more

Stopped in today for a drink and small bite to eat. I haven't been back since my first visit in 2012 even though I sincerely intended to. It's just that its in an unlikely strip mall and I always forget - plus they close pretty early because later hours haven't proved lucrative for them (but again - it's most likely the location!). Regardless, we had drinks (I had a lemon drop martini and my mom had a glass of wine -both were yummy). Then we split a French Dip sandwich which came with a good sized salad and some homemade potato chips with a blue cheese (I think) drizzle. They were awesome - warm crunchy - not too salty and scrumptious. The salad came with a lemon/orange vinaigrette which was good but a little bitter (still tasty but would have preferred no bitterness), and the sandwich was really tasty - the meat was tender albeit a little fatty (my half only - my mother's half was not fatty at all - go figure!). I will definitely pop in again sooner than later. Wish it was open later but oh well - I'll have to just come early. And one thing i wanted to mention - we arrived almost 10 minutes prior to their official time they open but the bartender was nice enough to let us come in and sit.
