I tried the Scallion Pancake, Steamed Juicy Pork Buns (Pork Soup Dumplings), Awesome Beef, and Chinese Eggplant. The appetizers (scallion pancake and soup dumplings) were both pretty good, however, the pancake could use more scallions, while the skin of the soup dumpling was overwhelmingly thick. The Awesome Beef and Chinese Eggplant were the stars of the meal; both were incredibly flavorful and delicious. One of the downsides to this place is price as it's quite a bit higher when compared to similar restaurants in Chinatown, however, if you live in Northwest Brooklyn, this is one of the better options for ordering Chinese delivery. read more

It's a very relaxed spot where couples are drinking or eating at the communal tables. I came here with a friend when we were craving some dumplings and we were starving. No. BUT they were pretty good and I would come here again especially since the service was really good and the place really deserves a high rating for speed or service and knowing how to treat costumers. I placed a large order for a casual, backyard party I was throwing. I called a week ahead to see if it was something they could do (YES!), and then I placed the order three days before the party on a Saturday. They didn't have a "catering" menu so I ordered everything as is which was fine by me! For "20 people", I ordered Shanghai-style lo mein noodles with chicken (6 orders), sticky rice dumplings (3 orders), chicken shu mai (6 orders), veggie shu mai (4 orders), green beans (4 orders), sweet and sour cucumbers to cleanse the palate (4 orders), chrysanthemum and black oolong tea because what is dim sum without tea? The total was less than $300 which is more affordable than what Nom Wah quoted me (twice as much). Sometimes, it just makes more sense to order entrees! I also liked that I get to choose the menu items whereas catering menus can sometimes be limiting. I didn't need utensils, cups or servings plates but they offered to bring some. I do wish they'd brought chili sauce or some kind of hot sauce! My noodles were lonely without the heat (sad face). Everyone said the food was really good and I definitely agreed. The noodles could have been a tad saucier but that's just preferences. Overall, happy with the service and delivery as they were right around the corner. Every time I am in the neighborhood and craving a cocktail or little Shanghai food, this is my place to go. The food here is not as oily and salty as other Shanghainese restaurants. Rich in flavor. I had the steamed veggie dumplings and rice cakes. Both very good. I recommend the steamed dumplings over fried but both are yum. The cocktails are interesting. For a not-so-large portion, it's disappointing that the Chicken Lo Mein consisted of 95% noodles, 2.5% chicken, and 2.5% greens. The noodles were tasty overall, but they were overpowering, and there were too many of them compared to everything else. They were also extremely wide noodles. The scallion pancakes were extremely thin and they felt too chewy/doughy. Overall, they were good, but I wish they were softer and more like actual scallion pancakes. M Shanghai, it's been a while! Since my last review, M Shanghai moved from its more modest spot on Havemeyer to just a bit further down Grand. I love love love the new space! I was always a fan of the 1920s Shanghai chic that this place exudes, but now it's cozier, darker and more sultry. We chose to eat in the garden, which is just as awesome: wood walls, trellis above and just enough greenery. I ordered my "usual," the soy peas with lotus root, which was good as ever, and although I was dying for the veg wonton soup, my other "usual," it was too warm out, so I opted for the vegetarian shumai. One of the best dumplings I have ever put in my mouth! I despise thick, doughy pot stickers and these are the very opposite of such abominations. Instead, tiny diced veggies and tofu are packed into a thin shumai skin. Steamed, chewy perfection! I paired the entire shebang with a divine lychee martini. If you don't like soup dumplings, I don't think we can be friends. There's absolutely no better late night snack for when you've been drinking and want to burn the entire inside of your mouth. The decor of the place is cool, very modern. It's also surprisingly spacious. Between four of us, we ordered two orders of the pork buns, and one of the "Shanghai style" lo mein. The lo mein was actually better than I thought it'd be. Not a big portion, but enough for everyone to get a taste. The buns were hefty, the skin was thick but not overly so, and the pork inside was a sizeable ball. Basically what you want in a pork bun. Wasn't the absolute best, but it got the job done. Also, a tip for all of you - if you're scouring the menu looking for "soup dumplings", it's #6. They're called "steamed juicy pork buns" for some reason. Speaking of, after we ate what we ordered, we just had to order another batch of them because they were so good. So if you're keeping count, we had 18 between 4 people. We ordered for delivery. I have been a patron of M since they first opened on Havemeyer many years ago and have always loved it. Despite the website saying "a box of rice" comes with the dishes, we received no rice. Upon calling the restaurant to ask for my rice I was met with a combative employee who told me they haven't included rice with dishes for at least 2 months, that she was a new employee that couldn't do anything for me and that no manager, no owner, and no one else who spoke English was there for me to talk to. So disappointed with M. I will not eat here or order from them again. $25 for dish that does not include a simple side of rice is absurd. The customer service skills of their self proclaimed only English speaking employee were terrible. Offering less and expecting more seems to be a trend with many established restaurants in North Brooklyn. I know times are tough, but businesses should consider their long time customers more often. read more

If you come to this Williamsburg treasure, you absolutely must order the Steamed Juicy Pork Buns (SOUP DUMPLINGS!) - you get 6 for $7.50. Each of us got 2 - I could have easily eaten the entire order but I would like to keep my friendships. There is an art to eating a soup dumpling - you must bite the top off so the interior can cool off. If you are an amateur and go in for a bite, you will be burned - literally. The inside is piping hot, so be patient you hungry fool! Once the soup cools down, slurp it up and then eat the rest of the dumpling. You're welcome. For our entrees, we split three items. We got the #55 Sliced Beef with Scallion and Onion in Brown Sauce (Awesome!) [note: that is how it is actually listed on the menu] , #37 Shanghai Style Lo-Mein with shrimp, shredded chicken, pork and spinach in a delicious brown sauce and Kung Pao Tofu with Chinese Broccoli (not on the menu, but Lisa knew of this secret amazing dish). This was a great mix of dishes since each was different/unique. I hate when I get Asian food and everything ends up tasting the same - so boring! It is hard to pick a favorite because they were each so different. I'd recommend ordering the same exact thing! Decent place w/ good soup dumplings I find the seating arrangement a little awkward but the place was pretty empty when I came so it didn't bother me I came here for the soup dumplings (XLB) and they were delicious but a little too sticky in my opinion. Really good Shanghainese food if not the best I've ever tasted in my life. They have really tasty soup dumplings/xiao long bao, veggie dumplings, & seafood/shrimp dumplings. I also recommend getting the peking duck or the rice cakes as well. Everything they have to serve or offer here is pretty much a thumbs up for me. Only downside is for the portion is high price which I'm not used to for even premium Chinese cuisine (as others priced higher would get a greater portion). I found a fingernail in my food. I'm really sad as well as grossed out. But I ordered the tofu sheets/ soy beans rice dish for delivery, and brought the dish to work for lunch. If that person doesn't even blink when I say "We're getting three different kinds of dumplings to start" then he or she is going on my speed dial, probably right above poison control but after 911. (Stabbings happen frequently in my life.) So pretend we're dining together at M. You're seated across from me in the dimly lit, red lacquered room, marveling at my lovely visage and charm. "My, she's such a fantastic conversationalist," you think quietly. It's absolutely fine to voice that. We are eyeballing the staff because gosh darn it, they're just so good-looking. Perhaps we sip water or tea (4$ for a small pot, 6$ for a large) and peruse the menu. I gently grab your hand, stare you in the face, seeing into your soul and say soothingly, "Darling, put that down - I've got this." When the server arrives, I will be brief and succinct with our order: - soup dumplings ("juicy pork buns" 6$ for six) - steamed shrimp dumpings (6$ for six) - fried vegetable dumplings (6$ for six) - Shanghai style lo mein with spinach, shrimp, chicken AND pork (8$, can be ordered vegetarian/vegan where tofu is used in place of the meat) - hot & sour soup with udon noodles added (7.50$ for just the soup, 9$ for the additional noodles) That is a perfect meal for two hungry folks or three mildly peckish ones. Do not turn to me and ask, "Wait, why are we getting three different kinds of dumplings?" because then I will think you are a plebe, a fool, someone unworthy of my time. Also, I will suddenly realize just how ugly you are. Don't you know, silly one, that each dumpling has its own unique properties? The soup dumpling encases a rich, meaty broth circling a nugget of pork in a tender wrapper while the steamed shrimp dumplings are delicate and ethereal which contrast the hearty, thicker skinned vegetable dumplings that pan fry up nicely for a crisp, brown crust. Do not complain that we are spending 18$ on 18 dumplings. Yes, I know you can get five for a dollar somewhere in Chinatown but this isn't Chinatown and you're not Dorothy and this also isn't Kansas. I've been to M Shanghai twice. Once almost a year ago for a fellow Yelpers birthday festivities and last night with my friend Julie K. for some late night dumpling deliciousness. We ordered... 2 juicy pork buns 1 Pork Fried Dumplings 1 Veggie Fried Dumplings 1 Scallion Pancake All of which were pure dumpling heaven. If I was on a desert island and I had to choose one food, dumplings would probably be it and these are absolutely the best dumplings I've had in the city by far. Delicious. Top it off with a chill calming atmosphere, full bar and the waitress who actually makes the dumpling sauce for you at the table. I'm craving more now. "...Where are the Asians? Everyone has sleeves...they are all hipsters? What is this place?" I hate to sound closed minded, but in my experience if you're eating at an ethnic restaurant, you probably want someone from the area serving/making your food. I think it's somewhat comforting. Chexican restaurants? What if your Indian food were being made by Panamanians? Or your Italian food made by Ethiopians? Yeah, no. So when we saw that everyone was quite...white, well, we got nervous. I remembered reading good things and managed to quell our collective anxieties. Even if I hadn't the quality of the food would have done the trick about 5 minutes after ordering. For appetizers we ordered the Spicy Wonton, what I thought would be your average steamed wonton with spicy "sesame" sauce. The sauce was the usual stuff, but the wontons were more like shumai in form, with a very fragile wrapper and savory melty pork inside. The sauce, while not very spicy, complemented the wontons magnificently. We also ordered the Juicy Pork Buns, which gave Joe's Shanghai a run for their money. The broth in the dumpling was clear and rich, unlike the cloudy filling of the dumplings at Joe's. Joe's might serve you 8 big ones, but the 6 we were served were incredible. For my main course I ordered the beef with scallions in brown sauce. The meat came in a bowl, glistening with oil and savory "brown sauce", accented by strips of scallions and onions. Diiivine. The beef was juicy, the sauce was brown and coated the beef in moderation (I hate the oversauce). My boyfriend ordered the Chicken with black bean sauce and proclaimed that the appetizers definitely kicked the chicken's butt. I thought both main courses were far better than your average takeout restaurant, but I'd rather make a meal out of those dumplings anyday.
